"Allah ka lakh lakh shukr hai ke baarish finally tham gaayi and we could come home. I was starting to feel bad for imposing on Ayesha Bi like that," Dilshaad lamented to Najma and Tanveer, as she pushed the front door open and entered the house. An uncharacteristic silence was what followed, making Dilshaad frown immediately. It was nearly 2pm now, why weren't Asad and Zoya wandering around the house somewhere? Didn't they hear the front door open? Her eyes scanned the house in a bid to look for them.
The first thing that caught her attention was the state of the living room. Cushions were thrown carelessly on the ground, scraps of paper strewn on the coffee table and drops of hardened candle wax all over the place. She thought the storm was going on outside the house, but a hurricane seemed to have swept the inside as well!
She turned to look at Najma and Tanveer, who were looking around the place with similar bewildered expressions on their faces as well. It was worrying to see the place in such a state, considering the fact that Asad would never allow the house to be such a mess. Asad! Was he okay? Dilshaad began to pace towards Asad's room while Najma and Tanveer continued to stare at the living room in shock.
Najma walked up to the coffee table and began to sort the papers out of habit, when she noticed one paper lying by itself on the sofa. She picked it up and suppressed her gasp. It was a sketch of Zoya! And judging from the way it was drawn, if she knew her brother well enough, he had definitely drawn it. She turned to show it to Tanveer who was distractedly staring at a half-eaten apple left next to the used candle. Najma gave her a weird look and decided to follow after her mother to show the drawing to her instead.
Dilshaad took the piece of paper from Najma and inspected it closely, finding herself getting more and more confused about what could have possibly transpired last night in their absence, for them to be greeted by such a strange sight in the living room, plus this drawing of Zoya. She gave the paper back to Najma and continued walking to Asad's room, Najma hot on her heels.
Tanveer hadn't even realized that Dilshaad and Najma had walked off; because she was way too busy staring at that wretched apple in horror. She picked it up and crushed it in her fist. They did eat the apple! She frowned as she looked at it again, realizing that only a few bites were taken. Taking into consideration the fact that Asad would never eat an apple without cutting it, it clearly meant that Zoya was the one who ate it! Tanveer immediately started to take a few steps towards Zoya's room when Dilshaad's loud gasp stopped her.
Dilshaad sensed Tanveer joining Najma and her as they stood at the door of Asad's room, the sight of Asad's bed rendering them all speechless. Asad and Zoya lay blissfully in each other's arms, in a state of partial undress. Zoya's sari was trailing on the ground, her hair fanned out on Asad's chest, where she had rested her head, smiling to herself. Along with the fact that Asad had both his arms around Zoya's bare waist, the scattered lipstick marks on Asad's bare torso too didn't go unnoticed by the three women either. Tanveer clenched her fists and swallowed loudly. She was supposed to be in Zoya's place! How did her plan end up going so awfully wrong?!
"ASAD! ZOYA! Yeh kya ho raha hai!!" Dilshaad finally shouted, once she'd found her voice. She watched silently as Asad cringed at the sound of her voice, struggling to open his eyes to the sunlight streaming into the room. Zoya followed suit, stretching her arm as she tried to orientate herself. Both of them finally opened their eyes to look at the source of the noise that woke them up, meeting Dilshaad's furious glare at the same time. It took them a while to turn away from Dilshaad and stare at each other, half in horror, and half in confusion.
"Maine poocha YEH KYA HO RAHA HAI?" Dilshaad's voice shook Asad's room, as Asad and Zoya finally found enough common sense to pull away from each other and sit up, scrambling to look decent. Asad grabbed his shirt off the ground and pulled it over his head, and Zoya grabbed as much sari cloth as she could to wrap around her body, albeit untidily. Dilshaad shook her head in disappointment before turning around and walking out of the room, grabbing Najma and Tanveer's wrists as she dragged them out behind her, Tanveer a little more reluctant than Najma,
Asad and Zoya continued to sit side by side on the bed, a long and heavily awkward silence filling the atmosphere. Zoya clutched her sari tightly around her upper body and turned cautiously to get a glimpse of Asad, who happened to turn to look at her at the same time. Their eyes met for a split second before both of them looked away again, unsure of what to do now.
"Mr Khan, mujhe kuch... mujhe kuch yaad nahi hai. Yeh sab... kaise?" Zoya finally asked softly, breaking the silence. She let go of her fabric and used her hands to hold onto her throbbing head instead. Her eyes teemed with tears of shame, as she tried to slide out of bed. Asad climbed out of bed on the other side, unable to look at her either.
"Mujhe bhi kuch yaad nahi hai. All I can remember is that you were acting like Snow White, and then we ate that apple. After that, everything seems pretty fuzzy to me," Asad admitted, as he massaged his forehead and tried to recall what happened. He could hear Zoya fumbling with her sari on the other side of the bed, and decided to give her a few minutes to make herself presentable before turning towards her. Just as he was about to turn, he heard a knock at his door.
"Aap dono ka agar hogaya ho, toh mujhe bahar milna," Dilshaad ordered sarcastically, as soon as she stepped foot into Asad's room yet again. She crossed her arms over her chest and looked at Asad's messed up bed with distaste, before shooting a look at both of them and then marching right back out of the room as quickly as she arrived. Asad and Zoya shared a look of helplessness before dragging their feet towards the room door together. They weren't sure what had happened last night, but they knew one thing was for sure. Right now, they had some serious explaining to do.
