Chapter: 3
October 2006,
A Random Day...
The dark of the night somehow always soothed his nerves and the drive in his beloved Tuscan relaxed his mood efficiently. He loved cars and travelling has always been his passion. The only thought that kept him going these past 2 years and will keep him going the few months ahead is that he would get away from the place, by the end of it. The anticipation of what awaited him kept him going during the days while he would push himself harder to make sure he achieved those required grades.
But the night that follows each day is a whole lot different story. The familiar surroundings of his house where almost all his memories have always been only of rude destructions did nothing to his mind that had been seeking some kind of Solace. The over the top loving Nani, whose only motive at the time was to indirectly insist him to move on from his past and be normal"which would also rub right in his face that he isn't normal; and then there is his ever so loving sister. She is his everything, really and may be the only proper interacting person in his life, but then lately he noticed that despite going through everything together, she had moved on from it, all too naturally and he on the other hand has been stuck with this whirlpool of emotions and complexities. Not that he was complaining, he was happy the way he was, he wouldn't want it in another way and he was even happy that his sister found her solace at least but that's what astonished him more at the same time. She not only did pretty good for herself being indulged in her passion for music, she even took music as her subject in her college and is now is full of her life having achieved what she always wanted to--- she is the new singing sensation in the world of movies and that makes him immensely proud. Of course the family influence came in handy but her talent isn't something that can be ignored.
So, yes, Arnav Singh Raizada was the loner, as always looking at the perfection of lives around him from a distant lost in his own world, playing it all safe. He was young, expecting a future of solace and he knew he would only find it in a place away from here"from Delhi, the root of his existence that he hated to the core. He hated monotony. He can't stand seeing the same faces in his life for a long period of time, he wasn't use to actually; he wasn't envious of his sister, he was truly and genuinely happy for her; she has just merely seen a dream and have achieved with utmost conviction which he would do eventually. His plan was set, wasn't it? Only his dream included running away' as his Nani has claimed it, but he hated staying still. If people called it running away', then be it, he would care less, all ne needed to do was get the hell out of here soon.
And hence, after another heated argument with his Nani about his future plans, he set out on his way to his usual mid-night drive. This was the closest he could do to travelling' in these two-three years and this obviously settled down his rage and calmed himself. The fast moving trees and buildings across his window seemed like moving lives and he saw himself running away fast into a desired future leaving it all behind, exactly like the way he wanted. The left side driving wheel behind which he was seated owing to the fact that it was an imported car, made it all even the more relishing--- his blue Tuxan, that he had bought with his first very international acquisition during his last vacation, is his proud possession and his only object of serenity at the moment.
The life outside the window was moving away from him and he was moving ahead"he liked the feeling and enjoyed it to the core. He loved the unfamiliar surroundings as his car swept across the empty Delhi streets. Amidst all the unfamiliarity, he suddenly spotted a familiar splash of orange at the passing by bus-stop and his car came to a sudden halt as his legs inevitably hit the brakes.
Her eyes followed the familiar Sea-blue beauty pass by and her heart bounced with joy when it came to a sudden halt, just ahead the bus-stop she was standing in. She threw one challenging look back at the dark aloof roof-top that had been torturing her since the last half an hour and then immediately broke into a desperate run, just as he stepped out of his car, now standing beside it, with his hands tugged into his tracks, when she reached him breathlessly.
"Thank you thank you thank you thank you Sooo much for stopping by" she said bending a little trying to catch her breath, as he observed her intake deep long breathes.
"You know I fell love with your car at the very first sight in college"love at first site because this is just so my favorite color, but now, I'm even ready to elope with it, really! My love grew by leaps and bounds!! The mere sight of it thrilled me today and it's such a beauty in this mid-night just like the silver lining in the dark cloud?, gosh!! I love it, love it love it!" she said dramatically dropping a hand over the metallic frame and leaned her head onto it pressing her cheek against the glass window with blissful smile on her face, her eyes closed; He looked on and took a double look at the sight in front of his eyes"-----is she even for real?'
His eyes widened and his jaw almost dropped while trying to gather what exactly he was doing here standing in the dark night with a weird creature, at a bus stop adjacent to his car--- wait, his car! That's his car, how dare she?
"Hands. OFF"
"--- I imprint on this thing, wow!" she was in her own world with her eyes closed not even acknowledging him.
"I.SAID.HAND.OFF.MY.CAR" he clenched his teeth trying to sound as furious as he can despite his amused self""YOU WHAATT???" he added-- this time his voice sounded incredulous and too loud, the earlier traces of fake rage completely forgotten. That voice definitely brought her back to earth and she opened her eyes.
"Imprint! I imprint on this, really, it's a very instant feeling you know? I'm sure he feels the same for me too" she talked to his car.
"He??" he could only utter as much, because he is not following even a bit of this weird conversation, something that is least expected given the situation.
"Obviously! I'm a girl and I'll only imprint on a guy right?" he observed her hand was still on his car.
"What the hell is Imprint' ???"
"---Imprint is"
"First hands off my CAR!"
"Oh okay, sorry, ofcourse your car!, argh you are so like Edward Cullen possessive', by the way are you a Vampire too? I mean yeah!" she beamed suddenly like something hit her brain. "Oh my GOD!! You stay aloof too, no one wants to talk to you, and you don't talk to anyone, and you have body-guards, are you??" she stopped blabbering and looked at Arnav who was looking at her like she has suddenly sprouted two heads.
"Are you a Vampire?"
"WHATTT???" somehow he was only able to answer in monosyllables and he just looked at her with this weird expression like he have just eaten something so utterly bitter"what the hell was he doing here?? Oh right! He thought she needed some help! Clearly she needed just a foolish listener!
"Oh god! You don't know anything about twilight Novel, do you? Edward is a vampire, almost like you aloof and all, but he does have very cold and fair skin, I mean too much fair which you don't and no blue eyes either, so you can't be a vampire. But you seem more like Jacob-- that reminds me"Imprint yeah! Jacob actually imprints on Bella, which precisely means the involuntary mechanism by which Quileute shape-shifters find their soul-mates and Jacob-----"
"SHUT UP!!!!!!!" He yelled at the top of his voice this time truly losing his temper, his voice echoed in the empty road causing her to jerk for a split second, her mind instantly remembering the image he carried in the college and all that she heard about him. (of course! He was arrogant and shot tempered! Why can't I just shut my mouth?)
"JUST SHUT THE f**k UP!" He repeated in much lower voice yet the rage was pouring in its current amount as sudden shivers ran through her spine.
"What the hell am I even doing here with such a maroon like you!" he snapped pointing out his finger, if she flinched at the raw insult, she knew better than to react.
"Wh"what are you doing at this time of the night?" she managed to ask and he again looked taken aback---- he seriously started having doubts about deciding to stop; what was the reason again? Yeah worried about an oddly familiar girl in a lone night all alone"DAMN!
"Yeah right! I should have known better than to stop by, thinking that you might need some help, clearly you can do very well for yourself reciting your vampire bed-time stories to the road side rogues who would give you good company, much better than me!" With that he turned around reaching for his car door.
"Oh my god! No!" she said clearly scared and finally reality dawning onto her. She had just been carried away by the joy that she found a rescue to her situation and that paved way to her senseless blabber as usual, but could she explain this to him?"she can always try.
He stopped and turned around to see finally the scared Khushi, which he had initially expected to see when he decided to stop. She approached him in a jet speed, covering the few steps that he had taken earlier and looked up to meet his fury eyes with her scared ones. "Please please please please drop me home!!!, I really really really really need help, really to the power of 1000"
"You clearly didn't seem this desperate just a moment ago?"
"Yeah! I dint right? Because I'm stupid! I was so scared before you came and when suddenly I have seen your car, which I identified was yours--" she stopped not wanting to start off again what she felt seeing his car in the lonely light.
"I was relieved and all the desperation to talk to a living person other than the roof of that bloody bus-stop have taken over me, I'm sorry, sorry sorry sorry sorry!!!!!" she added with her sincere pleading eyes.
"You were talking to the roof of the bus-stop?"
She dint answer, but instead brought her toned finger onto the strands of her hair, lightly scratching her scalp, looking at him sheepishly. He dint understand for the life of him why did that stupid gesture amused him.
"And why are you here alone at this time of the night anyway?" he added after rolling his eyes.
"I was supposed to go for a party and was lied to by the one whom I thought was my friend--" it is only when her voice sounded from a distant, he realized that she was already walking around the car to take her seat at the passenger side. "Who said I'm dropping you?" he called out over the car.
"You dint say a no' either, besides I thought you said you stopped by to help me?" she smirked and got before he could give her back on that. To his utter disbelief, he actually smirked too and joined her inside.
The next minute saw a beautiful blue of a car setting off the street with its brilliant speed.
**
"What is your name again? Happy?"
"Its Khushi!" she pointed out snarling a little and he arched an eyebrow.
"Yeah same---"
"No not same! It's Khushi Kumari Guptha! K.h.u.s.h.i, Khushi" she spelled the letters clearly as if he dint know what the spelling was.
"I can't stand someone forgetting my name! It annoys me like hell!" she added when he remained nonchalant.
"Well, you are going to be annoyed at me always, because I have difficulty remembering names of strangers"
Her mouth rounded into a perfect O' at that, but she refrained herself from commenting. Its Arnav Singh Raizada after all, going by his image, she couldn't expect anything else from him not that she would want to anyway. But he was helping her, and the least she could do was be civil the mere few minutes in his car. Right?
"So, I was saying""
""Ofcourse!"
"--That I was invited for a weekend party with some music and dancing at a friend's place, and I had to literally beg my parents to let me go, but here I come and realize it was a party full of drugs and hukka and so I confronted my friend for lying and she in turn insulted me for not being fit for such parties and I walked out---"
"Drugs and hukka for 17 year olds? It's illegal!"
"Well, they were all seniors except my friend and me"
"What??? How do you know them?"
"Not me, my friend, she knew them and I trusted her, she broke my trust, I'm never going to trust her again!
"Trust!" he laughed bitterly.
"Ofcourse! You should be able to trust your friends, that's the minimum thing in a friendship--"
"That's what got you here" he pointed out.
"Well, we learn from our mistakes--"
"So you will not trust anyone easily like you did this time? Is that what you have learnt?"
"NO! Trusting comes naturally to me. I trust my friends and its perfectly right that way, just that your judgment could go wrong sometimes, I have just now learnt to be more careful in judging people and then decide on the trust factor, seems like a good plan yeah" she seemed more like reassuring herself and suddenly he have seen a matured girl for the 17 year old she is, unlike the chirpy, blabbering, clumsy and immature girl who he thought she was--- yet she still seemed nave; Nave of the life's complexities, pure and innocent and unaware of the big bad world and the damage it could do. He sighed.
"That reminds me--" she started off again and he rolled his eyes.
"I trust you too"
He looked at her arching his eye-brow. "You stopped by to help me, so you are good and so I can trust you that you will safely drop me home, because you only stopped to help me right?"
"What stupid logic is that? You aren't supposed to just blindly trust any random person for reasons like this! For all you know, I could take you off to somewhere else and have my way with you"
"No you wouldn't!" was her curt reply.
"You know nothing about me!" his reply came immediate and crisp.
"Ofcourse I do, but from all wrong sources you see?"
"What do you mean?" he was curious now.
"You are a rich brat, arrogant ass, never friendly and can never make a civil conversation without yelling, you are cynical, insulting, outrageous, ----" she went on not quite noticing how his knuckles hardened around the wheel, how his jaw clenched hearing his own insult and how he was right now glaring at her.
"But you are not evil, and--" she paused finally looking at him but completely ignoring of his raged glare.
"The last part, I'll tell you later" she added and grinned.
After another 15 minutes of her non-stop blabber teamed with her directions to her place, they were now standing against his car below her building which seemed like an apartment to him. He checked the time on his watch which indicated 12:30 am and looked questioningly at her.
"Wont your parents mind you coming this late?" somehow she dint seem like the typical rich kid whose parents just wouldn't mind anything about their children.
"They trust me" she shrugged.
"Ah I can very well name this day in my life with "Trust"--" he commented sarcastically and reached for his car door""Arnav!" she stopped him again. It has become like a routine now. He would turn around to leave and she would stop him just when he would be reaching for his car door. He turned to face her again.
"I know the real you as well" she stated directly meeting his eye and dint miss the uncertainty registered in them.
Without giving him a chance to brush her off, she continued quickly. "The mask of arrogance you wear is just to keep people away, the yelling you do is just to scare them off but in reality you test people. You test them in your own way and challenge them to see if they can cross the barriers that you put up so efficiently around you. You intentionally make it appear that the walls around you are strong enough that no one could ever hurt you"but actually all it needed is an honest approach and that would be enough to pass your test, right?"
He took a sharp breath in and looked away from her boring gaze. She surprised him every second with every venture. He was now seeing a very different person. If he thought the girl talked about trust was a mature version of her, he should actually get the definition of maturity checked in his dictionary because the one he is witnessing right now is just something else. "I didn't know your subjects are Philosophy and Face-reading" he came up with the most rationalize answer to her direct question.
"Are you telling me that I'm right then?" again she caught him off the guard! Hell this can't be happening!
"Listen you Khushi kumara Guptha--"
"See you do remember my name and I will not be annoyed at you"
He ignored how she seemed to be catching all his secrets efficiently and maintained his furious glare while she grinned with that hint of confidence in her tone. "I don't talk about my behavioral issues with random strangers, who roam around in night with illegitimate people"
Insult, blatant insult---his other marvelous way to keep people at bay and not let them in, although he used this as his last pawn, the way she was trying to peep through his walls dint go very well with him and so he had to use. He thought he did see a splash of hurt in her eyes, but that had quickly vanished away to his utmost dissatisfaction.
She sighed stepping a bit closer and smiled a fake one at him. "And now, the last part I was talking about earlier--" she paused to see the surprised look in his eyes and when she was rewarded with one, she met his eyes again and continued.
"People are absolutely wrong when they say you can't even smile. Hell! There can never be a person who cannot even smile. It's just such a natural reaction. Smile isn't just from the lips Arnav, if you think of smiling in your heart; it reaches the eyes which causes your lips to curve up into that adoring gesture;
And you did that quite a few times tonight, ofcourse one had to look into your eyes to notice it, but you still did it. But when you actually let the smile adorn your face, I have this feeling you would look really good.
Smile suits your face; you should do it more often--"
With that she stepped away from him and walking away leaving him utterly speechless and completely astonished. He couldn't even gather his thoughts let alone process all that philosophical definition of something as small as a smile?
And in that trance, he vaguely remembered her seeing her turn around to face him again.
"And don't worry Arnav, I'll not make use of this civil conversation of us to turn into some friendship, trust me I'm least interested in people who can't talk back to me as much as I do, you are safe there, you can ignore me if you see in college next time, I don't mind but think about what I said okay?"
"Bye and Thank you so much for dropping me home!"
With that she finally walked away into the building leaving him slightly off-guard and to a great extent wondering in a self-re-analyzing thinking session.
