Chapter 13 : Standing Strong
Khushi was at the caf on time. Her friends were already there. Khushi was very happy seeing her friends again. She had missed them. College had been the best years of her life and Khushi loved her friends a lot. After all the hugging was done they sat down and ordered something for themselves.
"How are you?" Pavini asked.
"I am great, you tell me? How is Ro?" Khushi asked.
Pavini smiled, "He's okay!"
"In college, we all knew that there were only two couples who would get married immediately after college ended, Rohan and Pavini and Khushi and Shya--
Sameera stopped right there. They all knew what had happened. They just hadn't got time to ask her why. Sameera looked guilty. She shouldn't have brought this up.
"It's okay, you can say it." Khushi said. "It doesn't matter anymore." she said smiling.
"So, are you going to tell us?" Sanjana asked concerned.
"What?" Khushi asked.
"C'mon, you know what. Why you married ASR and not Shyam?" Pavini asked. Khushi sighed. What was she supposed to tell them?
"It's a long story, basically, Buaji chose Arnav for me, so I married him." she said.
"Just like that? Khushi's you've always been a wuss in front of your Buaji. Stand up for some things once in a while!"
"I can't. I can't question her. I owe her my life--"No you don't Khushi! You have never understood this! You don't owe her anything... Yes she did bring you up and she gave you everything but you did too. You took care of her too. You don't owe her!" Sanjana explained.
"What about Shyam?" Pavini asked.
"What about him?" Khushi muttered. Sanjana's words still rang in her ears.
"Shyam was totally heart broken Khushi," Sameera said. Khushi knew this was going to happen. That's why she was reluctant to come in the first place. She hated looking back into her past. What is done is done. Can't people accept it and move on?
"Well, even he has moved on now..."
"Yep. By the way, forget all that, Arnav Singh Raizada! How is he? We've read so much about him in the newspapers but how is he in reality?" Sameera asked. "Your husband is dominating the Indian Fashion Market very strongly." Sanjana commented.
Khushi smiled. "He is... great." She said. But that was not enough for the girls. They wanted details. They wanted to know where they went on their honeymoon. They wanted to know everything!
"We want more details girl!" Pavini asked. "Here, all day I'm stuck at home with my mother-in-law while Rohan works. The only time I get to spend alone with him is at night; even then he doesn't talk properly because of all the work tension. Why couldn't we just stay the way we were in college?" she grumbled.
"Khushi, you tell us, you must be having a gala time eh? Buying off entire malls at Mumbai? He must be earning more than you can spend!" Sameera chirped.
Khushi smiled yet again. They all were so wrong. She was in a different world. "Yeah." she said weakly.
"So tell us about him? Just 'great' won't do!"
"He is a little shy, doesn't talk too much." She paused. "He works really hard but when he's home he doesn't talk about work. He takes really good care of me." Another pause, "When I was ill he sat by my bed all night while I slept peacefully!" she said from her heart. "He doesn't express his pain but you can see it in his eyes if you look closely. He will think about me before he thinks about himself and--"I think you are totally smitten!" Sanjana laughed. The others joined her. Khushi smiled slowly and blushed slightly.
"You are so lucky! Rohan is nothing like that. I was ill on the night of his best friend's birthday party and he went without me! He came back early but then slept! Well, he did ask how I was feeling before dosing off." Pavini said. Khushi smiled. She knew Arnav was different, she knew he was a gentleman, she didn't need to be told all that but what had really struck her was everything she had just told them about him!
Khushi went on to tell them more stories about Arnav and her.
"Khushi, I think I am in love with Arnav only by what you've told us!" Sameera said.
Khushi was silent. She didn't know what to say?! She had never valued him and here the girls were already in love. Arnav was indeed so perfect, except his working hours, and the fact that he doesn't share his life too much and a few little other things but more or less, Perfect! She thought. Khushi was missing Arnav. She wanted him to meet her friends, see her old life and understand where she comes from. She wanted him to know why it was so tough to adjust there at first. Khushi had been wrong about meeting her friends, they were just trying to make things clearer, well, unknowingly, but it was happening.
Khushi was home around 1. Buaji was waiting for lunch. They sat on the table eating lunch, "Buaji, you still haven't told me about the conversation you had with Shyam and how did you know Arnav was the man for me?" she questioned. "Khushi, I got Arnav's photo a week before he came to see you. Well, I knew how he looked because of his pictures on the newspaper so that's why I wanted to talk to him before I could call him at home to see you. I knew it would be difficult to judge him over the phone but when he spoke to me I just knew that he was perfect." She paused. "I had asked him why didn't he want to get married to someone of their status. He told me, 'Aunty, I don't look at rich or not, I just expect love out of my marriage, that's all. I need someone I can share with, confide in. Mamiji was looking for a suitable bride for me so she showed me some pictures, so...'" Buaji said. "I asked him about his interests and his passion and he seemed very simple. He is perfect for you!" "But Buaji I love shopping and I love partying, how is he perfect for me is what I haven't managed to understand till date?!" Khushi asked still confused. "Because both of you can fill joy and happiness in each other's lives. You can show him how to party and he can, well, he has taught you how to live a simple life without any problems or worries. He has taught you how to stay calm in problems, hasn't he?" Khushi nodded. She could actually see it. It would be fun if she could show Arnav how to shop, how to party! Everything. Both of them would be happier. But that's if he is ever going to call her back, once he's got enough 'time and space'. Buaji told Khushi the other questions she asked Arnav and what he said. Khushi wished that Buaji would have told her all this earlier. According to what Arnav was looking for in a wife, Khushi had been a huge disappointment from the very beginning. "Truth," Arnav had said to Buaji, "Truth and loyalty binds two people in a relationship." Was his answer when Buaji asked him what was the most important thing in a relationship!
"What about your conversation with Shyam?" Khushi asked. "I asked him the same questions Khushi," she said. "What did he say?" Buaji sighed. "He said some things that I didn't expect. You loved a guy like that? I was actually surprised. He was clearly putting on a nice show." She said. "And you just assumed that?" Khushi asked unable to eat anymore. "Khushi, he said the most important thing in a relationship was love and money!" Buaji said, "That is so materialistic and cheap" she paused, "When I asked him why he loves you he said, 'Khushi is gorgeous, anyone would love her!'" Buaji explained. She hoped Khushi would see why she chose Arnav.
"Did you tell him why you were asking all these questions?" "Not till the very end." "How do you expect him to be sincere?" "Khushi, look. I did what I did. I am sorry if you think it was the wrong decision. I am sorry if you think I ruined your life, but you asked for the truth and I told you. I found Arnav more appropriate for you than Shyam. I did assume a lot of things and yes, you may think it wasn't fair. Arnav is good for you Khushi, you wouldn't have found any one as apt as Arnav." Buaji said firmly. "Why did you tell me he was cheap? Horrible?" she asked. "Firstly, he sat with one foot across his thigh. Then when I asked him about marriage he said, "Dude, I'm only 24. What's the hurry?" and started to laugh. Tell me Khushi, who talks like that?" Khushi was speechless. It was a whole new side of the story. 'Buaji had made an opinion about Arnav that he was the best I could get and then she found everyone else inadequate. It was true though. If I knew Arnav the way I do now and I knew Shyam and I had to choose, maybe I would have chosen Arnav too. Shyam is more impulsive and chilled out, but he is loving, where as, Arnav is totally the opposite but he is kind, calm, and very affectionate.'
Khushi was not in a fix now. She knew the whole truth now. Buaji decided to give her some time and she went to her room. Khushi sat right there and wondered what would have happened if there was no Arnav. She would have lived with Shyam. She would still be in love with him and they would be happy. But there was something inside her, like sixth sense, which just didn't like the idea. Her desire to be with Shyam was over. The only thing that had made her cry in the start was thinking she ruined his life and not being able to tell him. She thought, 'I should have just told Shyam in the beginning, then maybe I could just start my marriage from a fresh new page but I ended up starting it with extra baggage on me. I should have told everyone everything before marriage!' She was guilty but not anymore. She knew what she wanted, that made her more confident. Buaji had made the right choice yet again. She wondered why Buaji hadn't told her any of this. She wondered why she had hid this? There was nothing to hide! Yes, the answers Shyam gave was what she expected from him. He wasn't trying to put on a show. He was being honest. His answers weren't wrong, Arnav's were just perfect. How do you compete with that?
Two Days Later
Arnav was in his office when his telephone rang. "Sir, there is a Shyam Oberoi waiting to meet you, he says he wouldn't leave until you've seen him." The receptionist said. Arnav thought for a moment and then said, "Send him in."
Shyam Oberoi entered his cabin and sat down. "Where is Khushi?" he asked directly. "Mr. Oberoi," Arnav said, "You can't just walk in here and question me!" he said. "I just did." He said leaning forward in his chair. "Why don't you ask her yourself?" he asked. "She got a new phone I heard." Shyam said. "Oh! Didn't she call and give you her number?" Arnav asked sarcastically. "No." Shyam said. "Then she doesn't want to talk to you." He said getting back to work.
"Arnav--"ASR." Arnav pointed out to Shyam. "And please, before you waste any more of my time, leave. I am not telling you anything." He said getting back to work.
Shyam got up. He was angry but he was powerless here. "Wait and watch Mr. Raizada. Khushi will divorce you and she will marry me. She was mine and will always be!" he said adamantly. Arnav clenched his fists. He could just punch him in the face now, but he controlled. "She is mine at the moment," he said firmly, "About the past, I don't care. And in the future, we will see who she chooses!" Arnav said. This was difficult for him to say, but he had to stand up for his wife. He had to protect her. No one, and no one at all, had the right to say anything about Khushi!
"Game on ASR." Shyam said moving out of the door. "It's not a game Mr. Oberoi, it's my wife." He said shutting the door on his face.
