Part 18 - Say you'll love me again

The moment Arnav entered Khushi's house again, he scanned the entire driveway, but she was not there! She was gone!!

Arnav stood there as he thought back to a week before.

'I love you Arnav...always have!'

I'm afraid you'll break my heart again. I'm very, very afraid!'

'Khush, I'll never break your heart again! And I'm not going anywhere...not now...not ever!'

I.Love.You! I Love you Khushi!'

Arnav let the flowers drop on the ground as he began to feel very afraid...

'What have I done?

Arnav felt devastated! He recalled his Di's words...

'Chote! Itna ghusse se hadh se bahar jana theek nahin hain. Ek din tum apne isi ghusse ki wajah se apne zindagi barbad kardoge! Isse khaboon main rakhna seekho'

He ran a frustrated hand through his hair and cursed loudly! He looked around the driveway once more but did not see Khushi anywhere. He walked ahead on the stone pathway that lead to the right side of her house where Khushi's bedroom was and looked up into her balcony. The lights were off and all seemed quiet. Arnav kicked a stone at his feet and turned around and walked back. He fished out his cell phone and frantically dialed Khushi's number while crossing his fingers for her to pick up. Her phone just kept ringing without her answering even as Arnav called her over and over again.

'Khushi! Please pick up the phone sweetheart! I'm sorry...so sorry!' Arnav finally left her a voicemail in a broken and anguished voice.

He didn't know what else to do! He wanted to see her, listen to her voice and take her in his arms just one more time. He remembered the spare keys to her home that were in his house and started walking back to his house. He decided to sneak in to her house and then to her room to see if she was there and if she was alright. As absurd as his own idea seemed to him, he just had an insane urge to see her right then. As he remembered what happened 2 years ago when he had broken her heart, he was filled with a sense of dread! He had lost her even before sunrise and even before he had contemplated on seeing her! No! He wasn't going to make the same mistake of waiting...he would not lose her again! So as he briskly started walking towards his house to get the keys, a sudden realization made him stop in his tracks. He remembered the burglar alarm! That would be on and he didn't know the code that would disable it! That would wake up the whole neighborhood and bring the police to her doorstep within minutes!

'Shit! Khushiii!' He screamed in agony! There really wasn't much to do other than wait till morning. As he was just about to walk in to his house, he caught a flash of something pink out of the corner of his eyes. He looked up to see Khushi walking back towards him near the end of their street. Arnav ran to her and took her in his arms, the force of which made them both stagger back a few steps.

'Khush! Khush!!! Where were you? I'm sorry sweetheart, I'm so sorry! I love you! Please! Please forgive me!' Arnav begged.

Khushi pushed him away with all her strength...'Stay.Away.From.Me!' She bit out. 'Get outtt! Get out of my life!!! Don't you dare come near me or try to talk to me again Arnav! This joke of a relationship is over!! O.V.E.R!!!'

Khushi ran away from Arnav with a loud sob. Arnav was too shocked to stop her. As he saw her rush into her house, Arnav had a sense of deja vu. He ran after her, but she was too quick. As her front door shut with a click, Arnav felt his whole world crumbling before his eyes. He didn't know if Khushi would ever forgive him. He cursed loudly again.

'Shit! I can't believe I told her that we are breaking up a week after I told her that I love her!' he berated himself. Arnav realized then that his anger almost always had a devastating effect on his life. His and Khushi's relationship was very fragile, her having gone through immense heart ache because of his commitment phobia and also due to his irrational anger and ego. And now that they had bridged their differences and confessed their love for each other, he had gone and ruined it in less than a week. Arnav realized how heartbroken Khushi must be. He had seen couples bask in the glow of their new found love during the initial weeks of their relationship. And while his relationship with Khushi should have been filled with stolen kisses, warm hugs, gentle caresses, whisperings of sweet nothings and many, many declarations of love, his rash behavior had gone and spoiled the one good thing in his life...Khushi's love!

Arnav called Khushi again. She picked up on the first ring, which surprised Arnav.

As soon as Arnav had left her with his heartbreaking words, Khushi had just stumbled onto the street and started walking aimlessly. After a few minutes of walking, her head had cleared a little as she sat down on one of the benches at the end of her street and started recalling Arnav's words. She realized then that whatever Arnav has said was true. They were very different from each other and their relationship was volatile at best. She was a chirpy, bubbly, happy girl by nature...well at least she used to be before Arnav had broken her heart two odd years ago and he was always angry and very quiet by nature. Their upbringing, although they had lived their entire lives as neighbors, was also very different. While she came from a close-knit, loving family, Arnav's parents were strangers to their own kids. Although Arnav shared a great relationship with his siblings, the lack of parental love and guidance had left a deep scar. He became cynical towards all kinds of relationships. Even when Arnav and Khushi were just best friends, Arnav had never given his all to their friendship. There was always a part of him that he had held back and Khushi knew that! She sighed! Although her heart had just been broken again into a million pieces, it was probably for the best, she thought. She was suddenly amazed at how rational her own thoughts sounded to her. She never expected herself to be this calm. But when life gives you the same kind of blows again and again, you have no choice but to deal with it. She laughed bitterly. She got up to walk back home with a strong resolution and a promise to herself. This time, she won't ruin her life for Arnav. She would not run away! She would not hurt her parents and Jiji again. They meant too much to her. They had given her nothing but love and they deserved a loving, happy daughter. Khushi wiped her tears when she reached her driveway, only to find him standing there. And just like that, she snapped!

Arnav called Khushi again. She picked up on the first ring, which surprised Arnav.

'Khushi!''Say what?'

An amazing update once again! :) I loved the ending and especially Arnav's line 'Say that you'll love me again" It just struck a chord with me :)
