WAITING FOR YOU
CHAPTER 17
A nurse opened the door and peeped in.
"Yes, Sister?" Shreya asked her.
"The patient's brother is waiting for you, Doctor. Can I send him in?"
"Please send him in."
The nurse left and a man in his mid to late twenties entered the room. He greeted Shreya. Khushi felt that she was out of place and decided to leave.
"Shreya, I'll wait outside," Khushi said.
The man, who had just then entered, said, "No, it's not a problem. You can stay." He turned to Shreya and said, "Thank you for helping my sister and my niece."
"Raj, that is my duty. Don't worry. Your niece will be perfect. We will shift her from the NICU tomorrow."
Raj nodded.
"Do you have a name for her?"
Raj smiled and said, "My sister had planned to name her Roshni. She is going to light all our lives."
"She sure is."
They walked out of the cabin as they spoke. Khushi followed them. She tuned out of their conversation and looked at the surroundings. That was when she noticed Aman.
His eyes narrowed when he saw Shreya with another man. Khushi saw the change in his reaction and tried hard to wipe the smile off her face. Aman was jealous of some man even though the man was speaking purely on professional terms with Shreya.
Khushi waved at Aman and he waved back. She walked to him and decided to probe further on the matter.
"Looks like you are free," Khushi said.
Without taking his eyes from Shreya, he said, "I just thought of dropping by and say hi."
"I didn't tell you that I was here."
Shreya laughed at something Raj told her. It made the nerve in Aman's neck stand out. He clenched his fist at his sides and took a deep breath.
"Men!" Khushi sighed and shook her head.
"You said something?"
"You know, Aman? For somebody who is a cardiologist, you don't know anything about hearts."
"Sorry?" he asked as he turned to face her.
"He is a patient's brother."
"So?"
"So you don't have to react like this."
"React like what?"
"Like you are a time bomb waiting to explode."
"I just came to say hi. Nothing else."
She raised one of her eye brows and said, "Hi... So now, you can leave."
He frowned.
A woman in a white coat came to them and said, "Aman, I searched for you everywhere."
"How can I help you, Reena?" Aman asked with a smile.
"I was searching for the way to the canteen."
Khushi rolled her eyes. "You found your way here on your own. Why aren't you able to find the canteen?"
Aman stared at her. "Khushi!" He turned to Reena and said, "I'll show you the way."
Khushi shook her head and glared at him.
"Bad choice, Aman."
When she turned to leave, Aman stopped her and said, "Khushi, wait. What's happening?"
She folded her arms over her chest and said, "Nothing. You carry on."
"Khushi... Don't do this."
Arnav joined them and noticed the tension in the air.
"What's the matter, Khushi?"
"Tell your friend that we can talk again when he stops entertaining all his female friends," Khushi told him.
"What happened?" Arnav asked his friend. He noticed Reena and asked, "Doctor Reena, what are you doing here? You were supposed to attend a meeting ten minutes back."
She feigned innocence and said, "Sorry, Arnav. I..."
"We are not friends. That means we are not on first name basis. Get back to work."
Khushi saw everything and told Aman, "Learn from your friend, Aman."
Aman had a clear idea of what she spoke about.
"Khushi, there is nothing between Reena and me. It is not serious."
"Your 'not serious relationships', as in plural, might ruin something which could be serious and true in your life. Shreya might have her own fear."
"If she is frightened, all she has to do is say."
"Don't you think she might have her own reasons to hide a part of herself away? Just because she knows you does not mean that she will tell you her every secret. Sometimes, the truth can be more destructive, Aman. Trust me, I know." She paused for a second and asked, "What if flirts had caused real damage to her?"
Arnav's eyes never left Khushi when she spoke about reasons for hiding the truth. He felt as though she was talking about herself and not about Shreya.
By that time, Shreya finished her conversation with Raj and joined the three.
"What's going on, guys?" she asked them.
None of them spoke.
Shreya looked at them one after the other and said, "Guys, you are scaring me." She touched Khushi's shoulder and said, "Khushi...???"
Aman engulfed her in a hug and said, "Shreya, I love you."
Her eyes widened in shock, surprise and what not. She stared at Arnav and Khushi and then turned her attention to Aman.
"Aman..."
Arnav and Khushi saw each other and nodded. They slowly moved away from their friends with a smile on their faces. They knew that everything would be fine between Aman and Shreya before the day ended.
"Why didn't you tell me that you were coming?" Arnav asked her.
She shrugged her shoulders. "It wasn't planned. Shreya called and asked me to come. Will they be okay?"
He nodded. "There is no going back now," he said with a smirk.
"I don't think they will want to go back." She paused for a second and said, "I met your brother in law in the park with the kids. He is a nice guy."
"Yeah, he is. Can I stop by your apartment later? It has been a two days since I saw Vaishu. I miss her."
"You don't need permission, Arnav."
"Thanks." He checked the time and said, "Maybe if you wait for a little while, I can take you home."
Before she could respond, a man in his early forties said, "Doctor Raizada!"
Arnav and Khushi turned to see him. A woman and a small boy in his stood beside him.
Arnav managed a smile and said, "Hello Sir!"
"Long time, Doctor."
He nodded. "What are you doing here, Mr. Chopra?"
"My son is not feeling well."
"What happened?"
"He has fever from the past two days." That was when he noticed, the name board on the door on Arnav's room.
"Doctor? Paediatrician?" he asked in confusion.
After a very long pause, Arnav said, "I am not into surgeries, Mr. Chopra. Now, I take care of kids."
"Is it because of what happened?"
Arnav rubbed an imaginary itch on his jaw and stayed silent.
"That was not your fault, Doctor," the woman told him. "You tried your best. They didn't believe you. Their disbelief cost us our son. It was never your fault. Hold your head high. We would be happy if you could go back to what you love to do."
"I agree with my wife, Doctor."
Arnav forced out a small smile. "Which doctor's appointment do you have?"
"The nurse asked us to wait here. And here she comes." He turned to the nurse and asked, "Which doctor, sister?"
"Doctor Raizada, Sir."
Arnav's eyes widened. He shook his head and said, "Nurse, see if Dr. Neha is free and take them to her."
Mr. Chopra and his wife gave him a sad smile.
"She is free, Doctor," the nurse told him.
"Can you take them to her?"
"This way please," the nurse told the Chopras.
Before they left, Mr. Chopra said, "You are one of the best doctors I know. Return back to what you love doing. Don't let anybody's words come in between you and your dream." He turned to Khushi and said, "This man standing beside you is precious. Try to convince him."
They followed the nurse and went to see Doctor Neha.
After they left, Khushi asked him, "Who is he? What is he talking about?"
His eyes were fixed on the ground when he said, "Nothing."
Khushi knew that there was more but she didn't press him.
When Aman stepped away from the hug, Shreya dragged him to her room. She called her nurse and asked her if she had any appointments for the next thrity minutes. When she was sure that she was free, she faced Aman and decided to have an honest chat with him.
"Did you mean it, Aman?" she asked him.
He pressed her palm on his chest and said, "You know the answer."
She looked at her hand on his chest.
"When I was young, there was this little girl in my neighbourhood. She was a beautiful girl who ran around the area in skirts and t-shirts. She was strong and she would stand up for any challenge. She had the cutest smile. I was always rude to her. But when she turned away from me, I would let out a big sigh and keep thinking about her smile. And do you want to know how I called her?"
Tears formed in her eyes as she knew what he was trying to say.
"Yeya," he said with a smile. "That is what I called her. Eventhough she hated it. And she called me..."
"Ammu," she interrupted him.
"Even though I hated it," he completed with a big smile. "You forgot me, didn't you?"
"You were pretty irritating and I knew you for only three years."
"Three years is a long time, sweetheart."
"Aman, before we go any further, can you promise me something?"
"Anything."
"No more flirting with anybody."
"I wasn't serious about any of them, Shreya."
She stepped closer to him and laid her head on his shoulder. She slowly wrapped her arms around him and snuggled closer.
"I love you, Shreya."
"I love you too, Aman."
He kissed her cheek and said, "Serious or not, I will not flirt with anybody."
She smiled and hugged him.
Arnav was called to check on a baby and he left Khushi with Aman and Shreya. They were happy for the two lovebirds.
"Everything's settled?" Khushi asked Aman and Shreya.
Shreya hugged her and said, "Thanks to you, Khush."
"I told him facts." She turned to Aman and said, "I am sorry for speaking like that. I was rude."
"You are my sister, Khushi," Aman told her. "You can speak any way you want to."
They settled in Shreya's room and chatted for a while.
"Aman, is Arnav a surgeon?" Khushi asked after a lot of hesitation.
Aman and Shreya looked at each other and decided to tell her the truth.
"He is a neuro surgeon," Aman replied. "He is one of the best in the field."
Khushi's eyes widened. "Neuro surgeon?"
He nodded.
"Then why is he a paediatrician?"
"He loves kids. He studied paediatrics while practising surgery. After an incident while happened a few years ago, he left surgery."
"But why?"
Aman sighed and said, "He believes a lot in love. Samantha was his first girl friend. She was a Project Leader in a software company. Her younger sister was modelling for Arnav's sister. Arnav and Samantha met during a show and they liked each other. They started dating and their relationship grew. Arnav was pretty serious about them. He has always been a strong believer in love and marriage. He considered her to be the one for him. Somehow things didn't work out. She told him that she found someone else and that she was going to marry him. It hit Arnav hard and he took to drinking. He didn't talk with anybody for nearly a week. A few days later, he showed up in hospital. At that time, James was brought in. He had an accident and had severe damage in the brain. The truth is nobody other than Arnav is experienced enough to handle such cases. He told the senior doctors about the boy's situation and told them what had to be done. He reeked of alcohol and the other doctors failed to listen to him."
"He tried to do a surgery while he was drunk?"
"No. That's the point. He stank but he was not drunk. The senior doctors threw him out and told him that they would debar him. He requested them to test him for the alcohol content in his blood and they did. There was only a very faint trace which was almost unnoticeable. He had stopped drinking a few days before. Before the result for his test came in, another doctor performed the surgery on James. He was critical and he passed away. It was later found out that if the doctor had listened to Arnav's suggestions, James would have survived."
Aman looked down at his fingers and Shreya caught his hands and squeezed them.
"Arnav blames himself for the kid's death. He thinks that if he hadn't been drunk, then he could have helped the boy and he would have survived. The other doctors didn't help Arnav either. They tried to protect the one who had performed the surgery. When they knew that it was of no use, they apologized to Arnav and asked him to return back to surgery. By that time, Arnav buried his childhood dream and changed into being a paediatrician."
"Have you tried to convince him?"
Shreya said, "Not just us, Khush, the whole family has tried but he does not want to go back." A thought struck her and she said, "Maybe you could try."
"How can I?"
"Shreya is right, Khushi. You can also try."
She thought for a while and said, "Maybe I can. Though I have no idea how successful it will be."
"Give it a try."
They waited for Arnav to return so that they could return together.
