Chapter 5

Arnav's POV

The girls had taken their lunch in the room, they had been holed up in there talking for a while now. I was starting to miss Khushi's face...not that I should have been as I saw her face whenever I closed my eyes. Be it the first time I looked into her eyes, how her eyes grew wide when she was shocked, or the way she looks when she smiled.

This was new to me, the girls I had thought I'd fancied didn't even evoke this type of response in me. Hell, Lavanya, who I dated for half a year and thought was the one didn't even plague my thoughts like Khushi did in the matter of hours. It is scary. I feel like she's taking over me, and I haven't even had a normal conversation with her yet.

I sighed and looked up to see Asad setting four plates on the table. I looked at him skeptically. "Asad...we don't usually have dinner with our assignments." I teased.

"Shut up Raizada."

"Are we trying to impress a certain lady, whose name starts with Z and end with -oya?" I laughed causing him to throw a napkin at me.

"So hostile, is that how your treat your best friend? I am just trying to learn what is going on in my brother's life." I teased.

I didn't miss how his eyes seemed to follow Zoya. For a man who didn't believe in love, he sure had a weird way of showing it. I knew she was the one for him two years ago when he first saw her, imagine my shock when she ran across the room into the arms of my Khushi.

Asad was never distracted by anything, his concentration and perfection at performing a job were impeccable. But for the first and last time, his concentration faltered, we almost failed a job because Asad was so mesmerized by her that he couldn't take his eyes off her. He, of course, made no move to get to know her, rather he said that he would forget her like a beautiful dream.

I have no doubt in my mind that he wasn't able to forget her. Especially seeing how he watched her now. But after coming back from that mission, the girls Asad dated, which were hardly any and only due to the insistence of Di, all looked like slight variations of Zoya. Some with the long hair, others had her lips while others looked like her from far away, despite this Asad never made it to the second date. We shared that common trait.

He did so because he didn't believe in love and I did it because I believed in love a bit too much. That is the problem guys that grow up with their mother and older sister face. They drill these crazy notions into your head until you start believing them. Ma always speaks of a girl that will waltz into my life and make it better and how I won't be able to imagine my life without her.

Di however was more melodramatic with her "tumhari saansein ruk jayengi, tum uske bina ji nahi paogai...". So you can't really blame me for believing them, that is what I was thought growing up.

Asad on the other hand had somehow drilled into his head that love made you weak. Maybe perhaps he saw the downfall of his uncle, who had fallen in love with a woman that married him for money and took over his company at a young age. Or he saw how his nana ji, whom he was very close to her, gave up on life after the death of his wife. That was the only plausible reason as his parents were so in love that even their eye locks caused discomfort to the kids.

But being him, he will deny all the above. He'll tell you that all of it is a figment of my imagination and then suggest that I should get checked out by a psychiatrist.

"Arnav, can you go tell them dinner is ready?" Asad said while pouring juice into glasses.

"Sure Betty Crocker, I must say the housewife look suits you." I teased walking towards the girls' room.

-

"Ladies, if you are done your girl talk could you please come out and eat!" I said knocking on the door.

"Coming!" yelled two voices from the inside. I smiled and walked to the kitchen table where Asad had set up four plates. Pasta for lunch, my favourite.

Zoya walked out of the room laughing while Khushi trailed behind her with a smile on her face. She wasn't wearing the dress anymore but had changed into a black blouse and khaki skinnies. Damn, she looks good in everything.

"Lunch is served Mademoiselles!" I said pulling out Khushi's chair and then Zoya's causing them to giggle.

"What a gentleman." Zoya teased as Asad rolled his eyes sitting across from Zoya, leaving me to sit across from Khushi! Thank you Asad.

"I am starving!" Khushi said stuffing her face with pasta as the others ate slowly. Within minutes Khushi had cleared her plate and helped herself to seconds.

"What?" She asked noticing Asad and me staring at her in shock.

Zoya laughed. "She eats like a pig, I know. I don't know how she stays so skinny!"

"Shut up Zoe, like you don't eat pizza all day." Khushi teased. "I have a healthy appetite okay?" She said rolling her eyes and then smiling at me and Asad.

Her smile instantly put a smile on my face as I dug into my food.

"I love pasta." Khushi mumbled in between bites.

"What a surprise, it is Arnav's favourite too." Asad said coyly looking at me and grinning. Make it any more obvious Khan.

Khushi just looked up and smiled at me.

"So how long have you known each other for?" Asad asked them.

"Sixteen Years! Since she was seven and I was six. She moved in next door to live with her Bua!" Zoya exclaimed happily.

"Yep, we've been inseparable since. What about you two?" Khushi asked looking at me.

"Since birth." I smiled. "Our parents were friends and neighbours. We grew up together."

"Apparently, Di and him kidnapped me after I was born deeming me their little brother." Asad laughed.

"So you two decided to do this whole...wait what are you? Bodyguards? Secret Agent? Police?" Zoya asked.

I looked at Asad who just shrugged, indicating there was no harm in telling them.

"All the above?" I said.

"What?" Khushi laughed.

"We work for a private agency and we do what we are told to. Sometimes we are bodyguards, other times not." Asad said broadly not going into detail. The girls seemed to understand his intent and dropped the questions.

"What about you two? What do you do?" I asked.

"I don't work for one place, more like projects with several companies developing new technology. Khushi is a fashion designer though, but she is currently the head of PR at Vogue." Zoya said.

"Was the head of PR at Vogue." Khushi said smiling.

"NO!" Zoya said her eyes going wide. "You are finally going to do it?" She said excitedly while Asad and I looked at them confused.

Khushi nodded and smiled causing Zoya to squeal and hug her friend.

"I am lost." I said.

"Khushi designs dresses and other things, but she is stupid and thinks they are bad, when they are simply amazing. She finally quit her job to focus on designing and maybe start her own clothing line!" Zoya said excited.

"Calm down Zoe, I need someone to launch me first." Khushi mumbled.

"Girl, as soon as you show your designs to people they're going to line up to grab you." Zoya reassured. "What about that fashion house based in India? For all those beautiful traditional designs! Uh, what was it?...the one with the chiknari designs and stuff! You were raving about it the other day, how it incorporated Indian art in dresses amazingly...RA or something? Zoya said. I stopped eating as Zoya mentioned RA, she didn't mean...

"AR Fashion." Khushi said while eating her pasta. "And that isn't going to happen, I've been trying to get an appointment with Arnav Malik for months." Khushi whined.

"Interesting." Asad smirked. "Because you are currently sitting right across from the owner of AR Fashion." Asad laughed causing Khushi's head to shoot up.

"YOU ARE Arnav Malik?" Khushi asked her eyes wide. I nodded. "But- you, you are a...secret agent." she trailed off.

"Yeah, but my family doesn't know that, to them I head all the AR Companies, which I do. AR Fashion in particular." I said.

"But you said you were Arnav Singh Raizada?"

"I am. My father's last name was Malik. I recently had the name for the whole corporation changed to AR. It seems that it hasn't been changed from the contact info for the website. I am not a Malik anymore, never was." The thought of being linked to that man still hurt, although the hate I felt for him had dissipated throughout the years, I have never been able to forgive him.

"Holy." Khushi said her eyes still wide with shock. Yet she didn't miss the undercurrent of tension and hurt in Arnav's tone at the mention of the name Malik.

"There you go Khushi! You are now stuck with the man who you have been trying to get an appointment with for months." Zoya smiled and then turned to me. "By the way, what is wrong with you? Why does it take so long to get an appointment with you?" She glared.

"Gee, I am sorry Miss Zoya, I didn't know taking appointments was more important than saving lives." I said sarcastically causing her to stick out her tongue at me.

"Khushi, I'd love to see your designs...if you want me to." I said turning towards her. Her eyes which had returned to normal turned wide again as she blushed.

"Oh...uhm." She started.

"She will." Zoya said smiling at me and elbowing Khushi who was still staring at me wide-eyed. I raised my eyebrow at her causing her to blush and then smile at me. It felt absolutely wonderful to be on the receiving end of that smile.

"The world is such a small place." Zoya sighed turning around to see a fidgeting Khushi.

Khushi looked up at Zoya wide-eyed causing Zoya to laugh.

"NO! You cannot make jalebis right now." Zoya replied.

"BUT JALEBI!" Khushi squealed causing Zoya to roll her eyes. "How I miss jalebis right about now." Khushi sighed

"You make jalebis?" Asad asked causing Zoya and Khushi to nod frantically.

"She makes the best jalebis in the world! She makes them when she is stressed...or sad...or nervous...or happy...or angry. So technically, she makes them all the time." Zoya replied.

"I want jalebi." Khushi whined longingly.

"Me too." Zoya said and sighed.

"Don't you guys want jalebi?" Khushi asked dreamily.

"I don't like them...and Arnav can't have them." Asad said making Khushi gasp.

"You don't like jalebis? Hey Devi Maiyaaa! Kyun?" Khushi asked.

"They are too sweet." Asad shrugged.

"Why can't you have them?" Khushi pouted looking at me.

"I am diabetic." I said. "I like them though."

Khushi gasped. "Haw, that means you can't have jalebis? Or any other sweets, that is not fair." She said pouting as if it was the saddest thing in the world.

"Well I can, just one. Maybe once in a while."

"Oh, okay." Khushi said sadly.

"We should get going now." I asked hoping to cheer her up, I didn't like this frowning business.

"Um, okay. I'll go grab all my stuff." She said shyly getting up and walking to her room.

"See you two tomorrow." I said smiling at Zoya and Asad. As I walked towards the living room I winked at Asad causing him to roll his eyes.

Zoya's POV

"And then there were two..." I said as I hugged Khushi goodbye and closed the front door. "So Asad! What shall we do now?" I asked jumping towards him, but of course I tripped over my enemy, the floor.

"Ahhh!" I screamed closing my eyes as my ankle twisted as I started falling forwards

"Zoya!" Asad screamed running towards me and preventing me from falling. "What happened?"

"I think I twisted my ankle." I whispered opening my eyes to see him looking at me with concern. He picked me up effortlessly, again. My hand automatically wrapped around his neck as the familiar current started running through me.

His cologne invaded my senses as I let out a deep breath trying not to hyperventilate. He put me down on the sofa and sat down on the floor in front of me.

"What do you do when I am not around?" He teased.

"Fall...a lot." I laughed but stopped as his hand touched my foot.

He picked it up sliding my shoe off. His fingers brushed lightly against the arch of my foot, causing me to jerk. He looked up at me, his brow lifted in question.

"It tickles" I laughed.

"Oh really?" he asked, a cute smirk spreading across his face.

"Don't you dare Asad!" I warned him trying to pull my foot away but his hold was too firm.

"Don't I dare what Zoya?" he whispered smirking.

"I know what you're thinking. Don't even try it Mr. Khan."

"I won't, scout's honor!" He said laughing cutely. Damn it. Why is he so cute? I want to kiss that smirk off his face.

"Watch your hands." I threatened.

He grasped my foot and placed it on his thigh. The touch was casual, but intensely intimate at the same time. I could feel the heat radiate through my body as his fingers lightly touched my ankle. I felt as if the blood drained from my head as the electricity flowed in between us. But this seemed to occur every time we touched, each time being more intense than before. He looked up at me again. If he was as affected by the exchange as I was, he didn't seem to show it.

He smiled at me, his eyes still staring into mine and then jerked his hand causing me to let out a scream and hold onto him. I opened my eyes again to see him gazing at me with a burning intensity. I shivered as his hand reached up and brushed a lock of hair from my face, tucking the lock behind my ear. Instead of retreating his hand, he moved it down to hold the side of my face. His hands were rough yet wonderful against my cheek.

I could do nothing but look into his eyes, my lips parting slightly and my chest heaving as my breathing increased. That annoying current seemed to run through me faster and stronger than ever before as his eyes got darker. His eyes darted to my mouth before raising back to mine. Something flashed through his eyes just an instant before he slowly began to move his head towards mine. I felt my heart stop for a minute before picking up double time, anticipating the feel of his lips on mine. I let out a breath.

All of a sudden Asad moved back like he was on fire leaving my foot to hit the ground. I snapped back into it as well realizing what had almost happened. We both looked at each other awkwardly.

My brain decided to take the time to process the fact that he'd almost kissed me. And what did my brain do? It freaked out!

Warning! Warning! Move away!

"What the hell?!" I screamed at him trying to change the subject. "That hurt! Allah Miyah, what is wrong with you?" I said referring to how he popped my ankle.

He just sat there smirking at me. "Does your ankle still hurt?" He asked.

My mouth stay shut as I realized that my ankle was perfectly normal now.

"Well, you should have told me that you were going to twist it!" I said.

"It would have hurt more if you anticipated the pain." He said. Anticipated. Anticipated the kiss. Dear Lord. Why did he stop? I thought as I stared at his face in fascination. There was a tightness around his eyes and lips, like he was thinking hard about something. Maybe about what had just happened...

"Everything okay?" I asked.

"Uh, yeah. Why?"

"You just got real quiet all of a sudden." I said as he got up off the floor and moved to sit on the sofa, putting half a meter between us.

"We all can't talk as much as you do." He teased.

"You are so mean!" I said punching his left arm playfully. "So what should we do?" I aksed.

"Watch TV?" He suggested.

"NO! That's boring. Tell me more about yourself and your family. I should know a lot about them since I am your fiance after all." I teased causing him to smile.

"What do you want to know?" He asked.

"Everything!" I laughed crossing my legs and turning sideways on the sofa facing him, the awkwardness from earlier disappeared as he started talking about his family. It was clear that he loved them very much.

"It must be so amazing to have such a huge family. You have yours and Arnav's." I said sadly.

"Sometimes I wish it wasn't so huge, it gets overwhelming at times." Asad said.

"Don't." I said sadly. "You are so lucky to have them, to have so many people that love you and care for you. I've always wanted a big family, with a bunch of brothers and sisters, and cousins."

"Well, now you do. By next week you are going to wish they left you alone for a while." Asad said smiling reassuringly. My heart beat got a bit faster again, he just said his family was mine now. The smile left my face as soon as it appeared.

"I feel bad about what we are doing."

"What?" He asked confused.

"We are going to lie to your family about us, we aren't engaged but they won't know that. What is going to happen when they find out this is fake? I am going to have to leave someday." I said sadly.

Asad moved towards me on the couch and put his hand on my shoulder reassuringly. "It'll be okay. You don't need to worry about it."

I nodded. Hopefully. I knew I was going to get attached to his family, quickly. They all sounded so wonderful. Ya Allah, why are you doing this to me? It is going to kill me to lie to them, and then hurt me to leave them.

"Hey Asad. I had a question...about Arnav." I said looking at him noticing his eyes growing wide.

Khushi's POV

"And this is our house, designed by Asad Ahmed Khan." Arnav said pulling his sexy BMW into the driveway of the sleekest and sexiest house I had ever seen.

"Damn, why would you ever step outside?" I laughed observing my surroundings, the house seemed to look even more beautiful, the sun setting behind it creating a nice glow about it.

"Oh, wait until you see the farmhouse then." Arnav laughed.

"I guess your families are loaded, a bit too much." I laughed.

"Uh...kinda." He said.

"I should have realized as soon as you pulled up in a sexy M6."

"If you think my car is sexy wait till you see Asad's Aston Martin." Arnav said turning off the ignition and turning towards me.

"He drives an Aston?" I asked surprised as Arnav nodded.

"Zoya is going to die." I laughed.

"Huh?"

"She has wanted an Aston Martin forever! But jiju refused, she's...lets just say that she is threat to all other drivers on the road. Coupled with a fast sexy car she'd turn into a daredevil!" I explained.

"And what about you Ms. Gupta?" He smiled flirtatiously. Damn, that smile is going to be the death of me.

"I've been told that I drive like a grandma." I said. For obvious reasons, most people who almost lose their life in a car crash don't tend to race through the streets.

"So you two are technically the two ends to the same spectrum. Interesting."

"Only in that matter. We're pretty much the same in everything else. What about you and Asad?"

"We're pretty much the same person, he is just a bit more cynical."

"He seems to be the quieter of you two."

"It depends on the situation. He is a bit too busy starting at Zo-." Arnav started but stopped as he realized what he was saying. "Shit, I wasn't suppose to tell you that." He said his eyes wide.

"Why?" I laughed.

"It is against the bro code."

"What are you, 16?" I laughed.

"Shut up Ms. Gupta. You look more like the one who could be 16." He teased back.

"Sooo, Asad likes Zoya?" I asked interested.

"That depends." Arnav said smiling. He was drop dead gorgeous when he smiled. Devi Maiya, why are you tempting me so? I just met him a few hours ago and I already like him...a lot. More than I should.

He cleared his throat bringing me back to Earth.

"On?" I prompted.

"If Zoya likes Asad."

"That depends on if Asad likes Zoya." I said imitating him.

"I see we are both to stubborn to resolve this matter like adults. So we shall do it the old fashioned way...on three. One. Two. Three."

"Yes!" I said but he didn't say anything. "YOU CHEATED!" I gasped.

"Are you always this gullible?" He laughed.

"You are such a cheater." I pouted hitting his arm in a playful manner. He caught my wrist and locked it between his fingers and smiled mischievously.

"He likes her too...since two years ago." Arnav said playing with the bracelet I was wearing.

"GET OUT! Since the Nyco Tech Ball?" I asked my eyes wide.

"How'd you know?" He looked up at me surprised.

"Because Zoya saw him back then and couldn't shut up about how hot he was. She named him Adonis!"

"Damn. He was smitten with her, couldn't stop staring at her the whole night." Arnav said quietly moving from my bracelet to my palm now. He grasped my hand softly as we talked. Damn it! Calm down butterflies! Breathe.

"Wow. The same with her, she kept raving about him! Imagine the odds of them running into each other again." I said, without stuttering to my surprise.

"She is his 'one'".

"What?" I asked confused.

"Well, I believe, actually, my family believes that there is only one person out there for you, and if you are lucky enough you meet them. Like soulmates."

"You actually believe that?" I asked shocked. He didn't seen like the type to believe in love and soul mates.

"Let me guess, you don't?" He asked finally looking up from my hand to my face, all the while rubbing little circles onto my palm making goosebumps appear all over my body.

"I am not saying that I don't. I just think it is impossible to find that one person among the 7 billion people on Earth." I said realistically while noticing that I had grasped his hand unconsciously to stop his torturing ministrations.

"If you are meant to be you find each other."

"If that were true more people would be happier with their marriage." I pointed out.

"That is only because people settle for someone less than who they are meant for."

"And how do you know when you find this one person?" I asked intrigued.

"You just know." He whispered looking at me intently. For some reason, I felt as if time slowed down. That weird current thing started again as we stared at each other. My breath became shallower and my heart quicker. Hey Devi Maiya! Am I having a heart attack? What is with this feeling?

Arnav looked away, probably due to my now very wide eyes and let my hand go.

"We've been sitting in he car for the past 15 minutes." He said shocked looking outside to the now dark surroundings.

I realized that we'd been so caught up in our conversation that we failed to move out the car. I shook my head to clear my mind and tried to open the door only to have the door locked again.

"What the-" I said turning around to look at Arnav.

"You don't get out of the car unless I say you can." He said seriously.

"Okay..." I said staring at him. He was different all of a sudden, the smile was gone and replaced by a indifferent look. He got out of the car and scanned his surroundings before coming to my side and opening the door for me.

"You stay in front of me at all times. And do not step outside the house once we get in." He said as I looked at him shocked, gone was the sweet guy from a few moments ago, he was acting so indifferent all of a sudden. Wow. He takes his job seriously.

I nodded as he grabbed my suitcase and gently led me towards the door. He pressed a button and a screen popped up. I looked at him questioningly.

"It only opens to Asad's or my fingerprints." He clarified as he put his thumb on the screen. There was a quiet click sound as the door opened, the lights inside the house flicked on automatically. I stepped inside the house and stood amazed. The door opened up directly to an open space, the living room.

"Holy, this place is beautiful." I gasped turning around to look at a now smiling Arnav.

"Let me give you a tour." He said smiling. "Right outside the living room," He said pointing towards the glass doors on the side. "is the swimming pool, and back yard, a bit hard to see right now, so I'll take you out tomorrow morning. " He walked towards the back of the house. "And this is the kitchen."

"Oh my god, I wish this was my kitchen." I said squealing. The kitchen was absolutely sleek and wonderful. The granite countertops matched the black cabinets and the stainless steel appliances perfectly.

"You can use it as much as you want for the next few days, I don't think we've ever used it apart from the fridge and microwave." Arnav laughed.

"This door right here leads to the sitting area." He said opening the door. The outdoor area was lined with couches and chairs. It was absolutely beautiful.

"Can I just live here forever?" I laughed. "This puts my apartment to shame. Zoya is going to love this."

"Let me show up the rooms." He said grabbing my hand and leading me upstairs while I tried to calm my heart which tries to pop out my chest every time he touches me. He showed me two rooms before leading to the two doors at the back of the house.

"This is my room." He said walking into a neat and grey room.

"Nice." I said observing the surroundings. His room was plain, devoid of any useless clutter. He walked to the side of the room made solely of glass and out to the terrace. "And this is the joint terrace, and that right there," he said pointing to the other side of the house. "is your room for the time being." He smiled opening the sliding door.

The room was a complete replica of his, only differing in the goldish colour of the walls.

"This house is completely amazing. I am going to move in and plaster a name plate to the front of the house." I joked looking up at him.

"There is only room for two nameplates, you're going to have to share one with me." He teased.

"And how is that going to work?" I laughed.

"Simple, we add a "& Mrs." between the Mr. and Raizada." He said as my heart stopped and my eyes grew wide. The thought made my heart beat accelerate. I searched his face for the mischievous smile that should have been there, but he looked completely serious.
