Why had he been such a fool? Why hadn't he thought of the consequences of his action and its impact on Khushi? Why had he not realized that she was only growing more distant in the days when he dated La and tried to maintain a friendship with her
She almost shrank from him and La.
She withdrew into a shell which he could not penetrate.
He could never get her to laugh like before.
He could not make her hang out with him.
And he had been clueless then to know what made her withdraw so much. Was it fear of him and his advances towards her? If so why did she look at him with the lost and wounded look in her eyes, when she thought he was not looking At that time he had no way of knowing what was wrong. All he knew was he was losing her even more.
He thought he was fine with that. He spent a lot of time with La. He even hung around other girls. Yet he felt a gnawing emptiness in his heart which screamed for his best friend---
Khushi had tried hard to accept the fact that Arnav had moved on. She tried desperately to be happy for La and him.
But every time, La hugged him, she felt her heart twist.
When he laughed with La, her heart cried.
Although he had tried to renew their friendship, Khushi could not be the same with him. She knew she loved him, so what if he had no clue?
And the burning agony of their intimate moment haunted her every day. Did it really mean nothing to him? Had she been only been a momentary distraction?
She had felt worthless at the thought that she could be cast away so easily, by someone whom she called her best friend.
If her best friend could do this to her, what was she worth?
She had completely lost her self esteem and withdrawn into herself, losing herself in her studies.
Arnav had tried to draw her into the outings with La. But she always declined. She did not want his pity. Neither did she want to interfere between them.
She had managed to survive with her broken heart till that day La broke her heart, all over again----
'I wonder why behanji has gone back to hiding her gorgeous body in those hideous clothes,' one of the college guys had been saying, as La and Arnav were walking past. These guys were unaware of their sudden presence.
Arnav stopped dead in his tracks, trying not to react, knowing fully well they were talking about Khushi.
'Yeah. She is hot. But wonder what happened. Even Arnav does not hang out with her. She must be boring as a person. May be she has no other attraction, than a hot body,' they laughed.
Enraged beyond measure, Arnav had pulled up the guy and got into a public brawl, much to La's horror. By the time she had pulled him off and got him to his senses, Arnav was bleeding.
'What the hell is wrong with you? They were rude I know. But then guys can be mean and why did you get so violent?' she asked genuinely puzzled.
'That was Khushi they were talking about, my Khushi. She is my best friend, and they have no right to talk her about her like that. She is as beautiful inside as she is outside. How the hell can they judge her like that.
True I made the same mistake.
I might have befriended her to get close to you, but somewhere in the process, she has become one of the most important persons in my life. I realized how wonderful she is. If someone talks crap about her. I will kill them,' he had said.
La had been shocked to see this side of Arnav, a side she never knew existed.
Arnav realized now that he had made Lavanya jealous because she had used this piece of information to subtly hurt Khushi and create a rift between them, a fact that he did not understand then. She had done it so subtly. He had trusted La too much. Another mistake, he acknowledged.
Arnav, La and Khushi were having lunch in the caf. La had forced Khushi to join them.
'You know Khushi , you should really join us more often for lunch. We miss you,' La had said sweetly.
Khushi smiled slightly and looked away.
'Yes Khushi, you should hang out with us more often. I miss talking to you,' Arnav said.
Khushi had looked at him with a faint smile.
It was then La said, 'Yeah. He does miss you. Though he became your friend, just to be close to me, he does care for you Khushi. I hope you realize that. It is not as if, now that he has achieved his purpose, he has cast you away from his life. You are still his best friend and always will be.'
Lavanya had sounded kind and sweet.
Thinking of it now, he saw the intention. It had aimed to break Khushi's faith in him and she had achieved it subtly.
Khushi's face had darkened and she had plastered a fake smile on her face.
'Is that true Arnav' she had asked, her voice low.
Arnav had been unable to deny the truth, 'Well yes Khushi, it began like that. But it hardly...' he had not completed the sentence when La interfered.
'How does it matter Chamkili, you both are good friends now though his aim was me,' she had laughed.
Khushi's face had lost all colour as she had looked towards both of them and then bent down to eat her food.
They had continued to have lunch, after which Arnav and La had left the place.
It was when he came back to look for Khushi that he saw him for the first time, sitting close to Khushi---NK, son of the Caf owner, who had newly taken over running the caf.
He seemed to be talking softly to a sobbing Khushi---
Though he hated the thought of NK, he acknowledged now that she had found solace in NK thanks to his foolishness.
From that day, he had to watch Khushi in the company of NK.
He became her shadow.
He always found his way to where Khushi was.
He made her laugh.
He kept her engrossed in his witty words.
He even managed to transform her from her 'behanji' look.
Right before him, he saw Khushi drift away from him and towards NK. She seemed to become a new person with Nk----
Thoughts of NK and her still enraged him to murderously. He smashed another glass on the wall. He had to see her. He had to know why she married him, if she had married him, because he was convinced she did not love NK. Her ringless finger flashed before his mind's eye.
He knew in the bottom of his heart that Khushi loved him despite all the misunderstandings. She herself had confessed to it. Then why had she married NK? The question always came back to haunt him. He had burned in the agony of that question every single day in the past 7 years. Today was his chance to find out and he would, whatever it took --
Picking up his car keys he made his way towards Khushi's hotel----
