Chapter-20
Arnav hurriedly sat in his SUV turned its engine on while snapping the seatbelt quickly at its place. His feet stomped on the accelerator with his hand going constantly on the horn blowing it whenever some vehicle came in front of him. Arnav gave no damn that he was overstepping the speed limit. His mind was completely absorbed in thoughts of a woman whose condition he had no idea about. He remembered her low shaky voice thinking if something bad has happened. He also remembered that she was saying about leaving the hospital which gave him some hope that may be she was not in that bad condition. But the word 'accident' rang alarming bells in his head making him increase his speed some more. He furiously blew horn and cursed Delhi traffic. Damn he was getting late and he had no idea what every passing second could cost him. Arnav jumped the few red lights where he could have crossed. He had no time to think about the traffic policeman. Here his world was getting upside down, traffic police could be dealt with later.
Arnav almost jumped out from the vehicle the moment he parked it, making a run straight for the reception. His limbs went numb with fear but the desire to meet Khushi pushing them to work. He asked the receptionist about Khushi who seemed busy in updating a file. He snapped shut the file when she asked him to wait.
"Where is my Khushi?" he said freaking out.
When the nurse gave him a bewildered look he toned down his voice "Khushi, Khushi Kumari Gupta. She got admitted here this morning after an accident. Where is she?"
"Sir there is no patient by that name here." Receptionist told him calmly after checking on the system.
"Her name may not be here. She is fair, 5'5" tall, around 25 years old, brown hazel eyes and a beautiful smile. Ask someone she is here. She told me herself." His voice softening and shaking in the anticipation.
"Sir please try to understand there is no patient by this name or around this age who got admitted today. There must be some confusion."
"Confusion? I am damn sure she is here. I know.."
His speech halted as he heard the voice of the person he ached to hear "Arnavji I am here."
He turned around to find Khushi standing some ten feet away looking at him and all he saw was red.
"Khushi what happened to you?" he said eyeing her white shirt that was half red with blood.
"Nothing Arnavji. I am fine, it was a kid who got hit by a car. I just brought him here for the proper medication. He has just been shifted to a ward from the emergency." She told him feeling his concern for her.
Arnav felt immense relief knowing his Khushi was safe and secure. The relief was short lived as the rage took over everything blindly.
"Why the hell you didn't pick up your damn phone? Have you any freaking idea what I was going through?" he yelled shaking her by her arms.
"Arnavji I already told you the whole incident. It just happened by chance."
"By chance? You missed my message, more than my fifteen calls to you by chance! Do you really want me to believe this?" his voice was laced with sarcasm.
"Do you doubt me? Do you think I did it on purpose?" she questioned unbelievably.
"I have no idea. What did you think you were doing? I clearly told you to answer my calls just last day and here you are completely ignoring my words."
"It's not like that. It was a mistake and I am sorry for that. It wasn't intentional." She said taking his hands in hers.
"All I know is here you were helping someone and there I was unable to trace you since morning. You are so irresponsible that you completely forgot about informing anyone. Is this your any goddamned movie going on?" he asked angrily.
She flinched at his loud tone and looked around to find people stopping and staring at them. He saw her looking around and followed her gaze to find many onlookers. He held her wrist and started walking outside. Arnav silently opened the passenger door and she got inside without a word.
Arnav was still angry at her for what has happened. He drove wordlessly with chilling silence enveloping them. As he stopped outside her apartment he finally looked at her after their quiet journey. She mutely got down without looking at him and started walking towards her flat. Arnav felt bad at her silent departure but the slight shaking of her shoulders told him that his Khushi was crying quietly. He felt terrible but his troubled thoughts stopped him from calling her.
Khushi entered her flat, her silent tears turning into sobs as she dumped on the couch placed in the living room. She understood the reason behind his anger but couldn't grasp his denial mode of not understanding her situation. She was upset as she felt let down. She has never given him any chance to doubt her but he was thinking that she might have done this on purpose. He thinks I was playing with him? Does he think I am the kind of a person who would play with someone's emotions? She had decided only last night that she would profess her love for him and he doubted her. More tears made their way down her face while remembering this. She gathered her thoughts after a while and got freshened as her clothes were stained with the blood which only reminded of her fight with Arnav.
Aman knocked two times but didn't get any reply. After knocking once more he entered only to find Arnav sitting with his head held between his hands supported by his elbows on the glass table top. Arnav noticed him only when he cleared his throat and asked him his reason for coming. Aman gave him the file he had come for and left the cabin after advising Arnav to take some rest. He had never seen Arnav this lost in his years of working with ASR and he was not a fool to guess that the reason has to be something of great importance. He was neither an idiot to ignore the panic in Arnav's body language when he had hurried out of the office few hours back. Knowing Arnav for so long Aman was sure that something major has happened in this duration.
Arnav was sitting at the poolside trying to focus on the file but all he could see was the slight slump of her shoulders and her innocent eyes filled with tears. He decided to talk to Khushi as he couldn't take it anymore. The bell rang without any success of her picking up. Here she goes again!
Khushi looked at the stars in the moonlit sky. She had tried sleeping in every position but failed miserably so she decided to get some fresh air to not disturb Payal too with her tossing and turning at this ungodly hour. She heard her phone ring only to find Arnav's call. She turned the phone on silent keeping it on the chair and stood supporting herself on the balcony railing. Khushi didn't know how much time passed as she stood lost in her thoughts when she heard the doorbell breaking the silence. She wondered who could have come at this time. She looked from the keyhole to find Arnav standing there. Khushi didn't want to face him but not opening the door meant Payal could wake up. Before he could press the bell again she opened the door.
"Why didn't you pick up your phone this time?" he asked breathing deep.
"I was sleeping" she lied.
"Sleeping standing in the balcony?"
Khushi looked around in nervousness knowing he must have seen her and this time she was at fault.
"I want to talk to you."
"Arnavji please let's talk about it tomorrow with a clear mind."
"I can't sleep over a problem Khushi"
She saw him still in his office suit, his disheveled state and decided to talk. She needed it herself too as she too couldn't get a wink of sleep. She told him to go for a walk while talking as she didn't want Payal to wake up. He agreed and they headed down for a late walk.
They were walking silently when she felt Arnav taking her palm in his.
"I am sorry Khushi. I should not have spoken to you so rudely. But I was afraid. When you told me about the accident I thought I could have lost you. There were so many thoughts crossing my mind and I freaked out."
"I understand that but what I couldn't take is you not believing me. Arnavji trust me it was unintentional. When I reached hospital I got so busy in the formalities. There was so much blood lost and there was no family member around. I was waiting for that kid to gain consciousness so that I can inform his family. The phone was in my bag and trust me I couldn't hear the bell. The moment he gained consciousness and told me about his family, I checked out my phone and found your missed calls. I called you back immediately and before I could tell you about the whole situation you disconnected."
"I believe you Khushi. I really do but the fear of losing you was so high. I was fourteen years when Mom-Dad had gone out one day for some regular shopping. More than four hours passed but they didn't return. We tried calling them but nobody picked up. We got a call later by Police saying they had met with an accident. Dad was declared dead at the spot and Mom was hospitalized having severe injuries. She battled but couldn't make it. She left us just like that" his eyes misted up remembering the tough day when he lost his parents.
Khushi saw the broken fourteen year old boy devastated with the harsh reality of life. She hugged him tight trying to absorb his pain silently weeping with him.
"When you called me and said accident, it all came rushing back. I thought I lost you" he cried.
"Sshhh.. Arnavji. Nothing like this happened. I am fine and I am with you. I am sorry to trouble you" she tried to shush him.
"What if I had lost you? I can't live without you. Tumhare door jane ke khayal se hi... Promise me you won't ever leave me. I can't live without you. I love you Khushi, I love you so much that it scares me" he said hugging her tight as if she would slip between his fingers if he softened his grip on her.
She returned his hug with equal vigor holding him close to her.
"I would never leave you. I love you too Arnavji"
They stood there locked in each other's embrace bathing in the moon light.
"Say it again" he said breaking their hug.
"I would never..'
"no what you said after that"
"I love you"
He kissed her softly "Thanks for coming in my life Khushi."
"I don't want thanks. I want the same words" she pouted.
"I love you and only you Khushi Kumari Gupta" he declared like a man possessed in love.
She smiled through her tears "I wanted to hear this for so long. In fact I was about to confess it today if not for our fight."
"Really? If I knew you were waiting for this I would have professed my love before. I realized I am actually in love during that engagement party but I thought you already know this, didn't you?" he asked surprised.
'Haww Arnavji.. Here I was so desperate to hear those three magical words and you didn't bother! I knew but I wanted you to realize and share it with me" she said hitting on his chest.
"I am sorry" he said holding his hand in air in surrender.
"Now I would say it more often just for you my Sunshine" he kissed her forehead.
She nodded giggling like a five year old. "That's better. By the way what's with this Sunshine? I read it in message also but before I could reply all this happened."
"It's you, your name. This is what you bring in my life ' Sunshine not only in my world but also in my heart even in those dark days."
He took her lips softly in his murmuring his love for her in between. The words soon forgotten as they both felt flowing in the passion and intensity of their love declaring their love in the best possible way known to him and she returned it with all her heart. They both knew it was impossible to put it in words what they felt for each other. Their love, the depth of their feelings is beyond words.
