CHAPTER 72:

Geet sat in the same position, leaning against the kitchen wall since Maan left. Her tears had dried and she was just staring hopelessly into space. Her eyes swollen with crying and tear tracks marred the paleness of her cheeks.

That's how Naintara and Annie found her, when they came inside.

They had tried to go after Maan to apologize, but he had driven off in a fit of rage, and they had been worried about him. Naintara had to call Dev to follow him as well as manage to soothe a weeping Annie who was dying of guilt. Naintara felt guilty too that she had not stopped Annie, but then she hadn't expected things to get so out of hand.

At most they had expected that Geet would get angry and shout at Maan, but they had never even thought that Geet would go off tangent so totally. Now that Maan was taken care of, their priority was Geet. They had to confess their altercation of the CD, and they needed to do it asap.

Naintara ran to her, cradling her in her arms, as she sat beside her on the floor and gestured Annie to get some water. Geet just hugged back Naintara and started weeping again, clutching her tightly.

Naintara patted her back soothing back her hair and forced her to drink some water.

Annie also sat beside them on the floor, wringing her hands in guilt at Geet's state.

"Geet'wo jo CD thi na'wo Maan veerji ne nahi banayi thi'" Annie said in a rush.

When Geet looked at her in distrust Naintara added, "Hum Veerji ko bachane ki koshish nahi kar rahe hai Geet. We are telling you the truth. You know Maan Veerji inside out by now, don't you? Tum apne aap se poocho, do you really believe all that you just said to Maan Veerji? Kya tumhe sach me lagta hai ke unka irada tumhe kabhi hurt karne ka ho sakta hai?"

Seeing that they had Geet's complete attention, Annie pleaded, "It was meant to be in fun Geet. Bas tumhare mu pe hasi dekhni thi humne'thoda jhoota ghussa, Maan Veerji ki pitai'."

"Aapne?" Geet questioned.

Annie nodded, "Haan Geet, wo CD Veerji ne nahi maine banayi thi. It was meant to be a prank which all went horribly wrong."

"Aaj meri wajah se, tum dono ko itni takleef pahuchi hai. I swear Geet, I didn't mean to hurt anyone.." Annie started crying, "The man who is more like a father to me, today I saw tears in his eyes. And the fact that I am the cause of them kills me Geet. Please Geet, meri galti ki sazaa mere Veerji ko mat do'" Annie folded her hands and begged, but Geet shook her head and grabbed them, and pulled Annie into a hug, rubbing her back consolingly.

"Unki feelings jhoothi nahi hai Geet. Just give him a chance. I know he will be the best husband in the whole world."

Annie came out of the hug and wiped her tears, handing a packet to Geet. At Geet's questioning look, she replied, "This is the original one which Maan Veerji made for u. I exchanged it. Mujhe nahi pata isme kya hai, but jo bhi hai, unhone apne dil se likha hai."

Geet looked at the packet as if it was the poisoned chalice. Wanting to grab it with both her hands but still fearful of the outcome. Sensing her hesitation, Naintara confessed wistfully, "You know Geet, mere Veerji ko baatein banani nahi aati, he is a man of very few words. Apne dil ki baat kehna to door ki baat hai, unhe to normally ye bhi nahi pata hota ke unke dil me kya hai! Par tumhare liye he changed. Tumhari ek muskurahat ke liye he did everything which he had previously scorned. Shayad theek se nahi kar paye, but koshish ki. "

"Decision tumhara hi hoga Geet, just think it over. Your heart will tell you what to do." Saying this, she kept the packet in Geet's hand and they both got up and left, leaving a regretful Geet behind.

She glanced down at the packet in her hand, when Annie turned back to say, "By the way, Geet, wo rose Veerji ne hi diya tha. I rescued the poor thing and have kept it in a glass outside, if you want to preserve it."

Naintara added, "And to make amends, Annie will clean your kitchen for you too." giving a cursory look around to see the mess the kitchen was in.

Geet blushed at the reminder of her anger and tried to protest, however Annie assured her she would clean it up later and urged her to go and listen to what her Veerji had to say to her.

It was true that she had lashed out at Maan more in anger and said some unforgivable things to him, things she didn't believe about him. Sometimes anger gets the better of our emotions and we are helpless in the clutches of the monstrous entity.

She got up on trembling legs and moved to the living room, opening the envelope and extracting the CD and letter. The initial explanations were the same and she put the CD in the player, and sat to read further.

THE LETTER

Geet, tumhe bahoot kuch kehna hai, samajh nahi aa raha kaha se shuru karu, kya kahu. Waise to shabdon ka aur mera kuch khass mel nahi hai, but still I am trying.

Pehle socha tumhe ye sab khud kahu, lekin himmat nahi juta paya, isliye ye letter likh raha hu.

I don't know since when my feelings for you changed, but change they did.

Everything became good, everything became better since you entered into my life, but I was such a fool that it took me a long long time to realize this.

Geet was in tears by the time the cd ended, each beautiful word rang in her mind, etching in her memory for eons to come.

She cried at the beauty of his words, and she cried at the way she had treated him.

Hadn't she been the one who told him that a relationship without trust was baseless? Then why had she forgotten her own words and questioned him? He had been the best husband anyone could wish for.

He was her fairy tale come alive. He had treated her like a princess; yet maintained his distance, never crossing that line, and what had she done?

She wept for lost chances and regrets till she felt a hand on her shoulder. Looking up, she found Dev standing in front of her. The need to meet Maan and apologize and confess her feelings arose and she hurriedly asked Dev, "Veerji aapko pata hai Maan kaha hai?"

Dev nodded and replied, "Go freshen up and I will take you to him." Geet protested but Dev teasingly maintained, "Jake aaine me apni shakal dekho! Aise chudail banke gayee to mere sale sahib apna wo romantic proporsal-shaposal bhool ke darr ke bhaag jayenge!" Geet whined but with a sad and resigned smile ran inside to straighten herself.

The small smile which came on her lips brought a sense of peace to the two women who stood outside praying that this time all would be well.
