Chapter 46
"Mumma where were you for so long?" Ansh flanked by his two sisters were the first to run towards a bewildered looking Smriti. It was not that they were complaining of the delay caused in just this day. From the longing in their voice and tears in each of their eyes it was obvious they were referring to her long absence since the blast. Yash's heart clenched at the sight of his children hugging Aarti with so much love and affection,
Smriti stood stiff as a statue totally at loss as to how to react. Then she did the mistake of looking into the faces of the children who where holding on to her as if she meant everything for them. Big mistake she told herself as her heart just melted and she bent and hugged them in return with her one free hand. When words did not seem correct or appropriate to her, just to give these kids a much needed hug seemed perfectly alright to her. Aayu in her one hand wrapped in a cosy blanket and the other hand encircling the kids, it was such a lovely picture thought Yash and wanted to join in on the family hug but he knew Aarti would not be as receptive of his affection as much as she clearly was of the children so he refrained himself.
"Chalo bachho its time we welcome your parents the traditional way with Aarti" Gayatri finally interrupted the wordless bonding session.
Upon hearing their grandmother they reluctantly let go of their mother and stood at her side.
When Gayatri approached the door with the thali in hand she finally noticed the bundle in Aarti's hand. And Aayu chose that precise moment to make his presence known as he let out a small sound in his sleep.
The entire family came closer and stood behind Gayatri all looking confused their eyes going from the baby to Aarti and then they all turned to Yash for an explanation.
"I'll explain...if you would just let us in...its been a long day already" was all Yash said.
Gayatri sprung into action noting the tiredness which Yash was not faking. She did their Aarti and asked them to step in together keepin their right leg in first. Smriti hesitated but then gave in.
"Mumma...we are really hungry and we were waiting for you arrival to have our dinner. It's been so long won't you be with us as we have our dinner" Payal said eyeing the baby in Aarti's hand with open curiousity but not asking about him.
Smriti looked at Yash, his eyes communicating to her to just go with the flow for now. And that is what she did hoping that Yash would sort out the misunderstanding with the other members in her absence.
When Aarti left for the dining area following the kids with Aayu right with her, Yash heaved a deep sigh.
"Yash...who is that baby with Aarti bahu?" Suraj Pratap asked immediately.
"Bauji its a long story..." Yash began and narrated how Aarti had woken up yesterday night claiming to be Smriti, how he had lied to Gayatri take her to her present house and how he had convinced her to come home with him to act like a governess to their children" Yash ended feeling glad that he shared all that with his family. It was driving him crazy already.
"What? So you mean to say that Aarti bahu is suffering from Amnesia. How did she survive the blast? How did she end up here in Bhopal and turn up so unexpectedly yesterday?" Suraj questioned upon hearing what Yash had said.
"Bauji...I do not have those answers yet. But so far she was living with Aakash and his mother. So I would just hope that they give us the answers for that" Yash said hoping he would get some clarity soon.
"What Aakash our driver... Mere bhagwan ki kasam...you mean Aarti was living with THAT MAN. Does that mean...does that mean...the baby" a scandalized *-Maya uttered.
"Let's not jump to conclusions just YET jiji" Gayatri was quick to stop Maya from further speculating baselessly.
"Yes maa you are correct. For now I want everyone to treat Aarti ...as well...Smriti. Let us try and make her comfortable here. Hopefully the mystery surrounding the baby would soon be lifted and hopefully with some medical help we could get our old Aarti back. So do I take it that I have all your support in this?" Yash asked as he looked at each and every one of his family members.
When they all agreed, Yash was glad that he could count on his family and could rely on their co-operation.
"But Yash bhaiya...what about the children? How are you going to explain all this to them?" Vidhi finally spoke up still coming to terms with everything.
"I'll think of something bhabhi...I just have to think of something" Yash said but he himself wondered what he would say.
Just then Aarti and the kids returned.
"Ansh...you are a shota-superman. I really loved how you finshed the meal so fast without any fuss: No wonder you are so strong" Smriti said looking at Ansh who positively glowed under the compliment.
"And you two are no less Palak and Payal ...super-girls in your own right" she added not wanting the girls to feel any less.
"Now who wants to hear a good bed-time story?" she asked and waited for their response which did not take more than a split second to come.
"Me..me...me" they shouted in chorus.
To which Smriti smiled and said "Ok run along and change for bed as I come in just a bit" which got the kids make a dash towards their room.
When they were out of sight Smriti turned towards the adults of the family and saw that they were all looking at her strangely. What had she suddenly grown two heads or something?
"Hello...I guess Mr.Scindia has told you about me. I assure you I will take very good care of the children. But if you do not mind...I would like to see my quaters to settle down" Smriti said trying to break the uncomfortable silence.
Yash looked at his mother and Gayatri quickly acted as the situation demanded.
"Come this way...I will show you. Ram Dulare...our helper would get your luggage right along" she said as she led Smriti to the guest room.
---------------------------------
"Thank you so much. This room is very luxurious. Are you sure an employee deserves this much? I will be fine in the out house too" Smriti asked the older woman feeling a bit out of place in the room.
"You are not an employee" Gayatri said and upon seeing the perplexed expression she added "taking care of my grand-children makes you more of a family member..."
Smriti wordlessly watched Gayatri for a second and then said " I know all of you must be shocked seeing me...I mean i look exactly like you bahu...Aarti. I...I do not know my own past ...I...I was hoping...was hoping...that...that" Smriti searched for words to say but was finding it difficult.
Gayatri sensed her distress and held Smriti's hands and said "Ten months ago...Aarti was here and we were indeed a very happy family...but her absence devasted this family like nothing else. Take your time...Sm..Smriti (she said her name tentatively finding it a bit strange) no pressure on you. But you better hurry now as your...I mean the children might be getting restless. And if you need anything for the baby do let me know (Gayatri forced herself to add). Lastly do join us for dinner later".
With that she quietly left the room leaving Smriti feeling more relaxed than before.
-------------------------
After the grown-up had a rather muted dinner everyone started to retire to their room. Everyone had too many questions for Aarti/Smriti but were not sure whether to bring them out then. So the awakwardness in the dinner remained.
Just when Smirti was about to retire to her room she saw Yash coming towards her.
"Yes?" she asked.
"Thank you. You have adjusted perfectly here...the kids...I have not seen them this happy in ages. You have worked your magic on them" Yash said and saw Smriti getting embarrassed at his words.
"It what I am here for Mr.Scindi.."she started to say quietly.
"Yash...I insist"he objected at her using his surname.
"Alright Yashji (she amended smiling and added) I was just doing my job" she concluded.
"I see" was all Yash said as he bid good bye and started to head towards his room leaving his stranger-wife in another. They were together under a roof yet separated thought Yash. What a strange reunion this was.
Just then Yash turned back and asked
"I never remember telling you my children's names how did you know their names?"
Smriti stopped and faced Yash before answering.
"That's what they were calling each other...I just picked up on it. By the way thank you for clearing everything with your family members about me. It was a huge relief for me. I was really anxious about how they would react" she said.
Yash just nodded and turned back feeling utterly disappointed over her response. He knew he could not have this that easy. But he kept walking towards his room somehow feeling at peace with himself for just having Aarti in his home.
TO BE CONTINUED...
