MILAN- The Final Destination
PART- 103
While waiting in Rajendra's living room Maan stared at the big portrait of Geet n Meera's childhood. Meera's face was like always expressionless while Geet had the biggest grin on her face. Her hairs were tied in her two trademark ponies and eyes shimmered with liveliness.
He couldn't help comparing that Geet with the person she now was, timid n inert.
But today he would know why she was had become like this, if not the entire story then at least he would get some lead to start with. He would probe Rajendra to tell him something-anything though certain that Meera wouldn't be of much help. She had come to KM after Geet was discharged from hospital and had talked to Geet in private. He wasn't sure what they talked about but he was aware of Meera's absolute hate for him if the murderous glare she threw at him before storming out was something to go by.
He heard footsteps n thought it to be Rajendra but was proven wrong when a hand clutched his shoulder n as he turned a hand was plastered sharply on his face. His cheek stung but more than that he pride did. He clenched his jaw, his hand on his cheek and stared at Meera ferocious face with utter fury to match. Although a little distraught she didn't flinch back seeing his rage and held her ground, a sick satisfaction coiling inside her.
How dare she raise her hand on him? Screw not hitting a woman, Maan almost raised his hand to slap her back but at right-or say wrong-time Karan came in between, his face apologetic at the same time concerned. Karan get aside, let's see what he can do? After doing all that to Geet he had the audacity to come here.
Maan took a step forward but Karan kept his hand on his chest to stop him. I am sorry Maan.
Why are you saying sorry? Meera asked unbelievably.
Meera I had not expected such a foolhardy behavior from you. This time it was Rajendra who spoke entering the scene.
But papa'
Karan take Meera to her room. Karan nodded in understanding n again passed an apologetic glance towards Maan who was still seething in anger holding himself back with all his might just because he knew Meera's anger was her love for Geet in some peculiar way.
I am not going anywhere. Meera hissed.
Meera I will talk to you later about this. Rajendra said in a stern tone. Abhi apne room me jao.
Karan pulled Meera to her room while she glared daggers at Maan.
Mommy, you have count to wenty. I will hide n you will find Jia. Rocking on her feet n sucking her upper lips the 4 year old explained the complex rules of hide n seek to her mother as if Geet had never played the game before.
Geet didn't feel like playing but since Maan had gone out to don't know where, Jia was creating havoc in KM. So they had come to the third floor which was mostly deserted to play hide n seek n not disturb anyone.
Jia it's called twenty.
Yesh, wenty. She agreed and Geet giggled. As you say. So, where I have to count?
Behind that fillar.
Geet rolled her eyes at Jia's 'fillar' n walked behind the pillar where she was supposed to do her counting. Once done with her count she set off to search for Jia. Going through the corridors she peeped into few rooms but her steps halted outside the room which Maan had prohibited anyone from entering.
She traced the outline of the wooden door n saw the lock hanging on it. Every time she passed by the room it seemed to call to her, like all her answers were trapped in that one room. The feeling was strange and unsettling, scary even. She remembered how Maan had scolded n fired the servant who had opened the room and almost turned back to leave the room to itself. Then his face after he thought no one was there n while touching the door came to her mind and she knew what she was going to do.
I want to know what happened to Geet that changed her totally. Maan said before Rajendra could continue his series of apologies on behalf of her daughter.
Beta you have every right to know par mai'
Par kuch nai uncle. Hum milke Geet ki madad kar sakte hai. Please mujhe bataiye ke uske saath kya hua tha?
After a moment of contemplation Rajendra seemed to agree. Sab kuch toh mujhe bhi nai pata. After Mohinder n Rano bhabhi left for India Geet stayed with me for some time. Someone from Mohinder's family in Hosiyaarpur called to know when Geet was coming? Which was odd because they were being a little pushy as Mohinder was not in very good terms with his family before. In fact it was the first time they had gone there after Geet's birth but then considering Daarji's condition I thought maybe he wanted all his family together. So Geet also left for Hosiyaarpur. She was upset before leaving only I assumed she may be missing her friends and all.i
Nearly three weeks passed. It was understandable because Mohinder had gone to his family after so much time but the strange thing was that he didn't once called to check on business or update me of what's going on there. I called Meera and Beeji had returned there long back in just one week only but there was no news of Mohinder. Geet hadn't contacted Meera either. Our attempts to contact them failed. We got worried but waited for another week. Then Meera came to London n we went to Hosiyaarpur.
Rajendra's eyes tear up. There we got to know that Mohinder n Rano Bhabhi had expired in some kind of accident. His family was very vague n I found them secretive. It was their place so we couldn't do anything. We wanted to meet Geet but they wouldn't let us. When we went to them with police they told that Geet ran away with some boy, they also said she stole jewelry n cash from their house.
Yeh toh bilkul namumkin si baat hui na? Hum itni dur the aur humme pata bhi nai chala ke humari bacchi ke saath kya hua. After searching for 10 days the police found her in a government hospital in another city. Her condition was not good. The hospital authority didn't even know her name, someone had reported about her been seen at a roadside then she was brought there. I can never forget. When we went to take her she was lying on the bed, lifeless and there was no recognition on her face when she saw me or even Meera who was her life.
We pressed charge on Geet's so called family. But we didn't know if her condition was entirely their doing and Geet wouldn't speak anything. They were quite influential and in lack of any proper proof nothing happened.
Geet stayed with me London and after completing MBA Meera came to us. That time was difficult for Meera too. She had broken down herself; every time she spoke it was related to Geet of what they could so that Geet would speak something. She planned new tricks everyday to make her eat. We consulted many doctors but no use. And I was also not young, it was difficult for me to handle business alone after Mohinder's sudden death. It was too much for all of us.
But Meera took care of everything. Rajendra said after long a smile adorning his face. He was proud of his daughter. She pulled herself together and told me that Geet may be needed change. If we took her somewhere far her condition could improve. She had heard about Dr. Neeraj n talked to him. We shifted to Delhi. Already we had a branch here so taking care of business from here was not that big a problem.
Our hopes didn't go in vain. Dr. Neeraj was good n only in his first session Geet cried. The first emotion she had shown so far. I had never thought I would be so happy seeing her cry someday.
If she just took a look before Maan came back it would do no harm. Geet ran downstairs towards Maan's room. Her heart beating fast in anticipation of what she might found in that mystery room. By some means she knew it was something big. After searching for a while she found the keys in the lowest drawer. Coming back to the room she inserted first random key into the lock and only in first attempt the lock opened.
She walked inside an eerie feeling creeping under her skin. The room looked scary in dark; everything was covered with a white cloth. She removed all the clothes n closed the door before switching on the lights. When she turned around the blow of shock was blinding, her hand flew to her mouth. It was her room.
