Chapter 12

Geet's word's hung in the air while the music kept playing, now the track changed to something soft and slow. It was a yanni yet again, "to the one who knows".

The song echoed Maan's feelings, his inner turmoil, he had been rendered speechless by geet, by the simple question that she asked. The answer of which had changed his life indeed. He knew it was time for him to spill it all out. After all Geet had right to know and he didn't intend to keep her in the dark.

He sighed, "Geet, do you believe in love?"

His question left Geet vulnerable and she became stiff. She had expected an answer, an explanation in return not a question that caught her off guard.

Maan felt her grow stiff in his arms. He had expected a similar behavior, yet somewhere his heart felt hurt at her reaction. In the moonlight with the stars as witness and the soft breeze blowing, he had felt heaven holding Geet close to him, his heart, she seemed so full of life, so happy, her banter infused life into him and he felt so calm. But now again she had gotten sad, "was it his fault" he wondered.

Yet keeping the thought at the back of his mind he proceeded with his answer, "Geet I know it's not one of the opportune moments to ask you……………….."

Before he could finish, Geet began, " I asked you a question maan? No please answer,stop playing hide and seek, this behavior of yours its really confusing me" she said.

Maan looked down at the innocent beauty in his arms and smiled sadly, "I am not playing hide and seek, life has been doing so. You are saying its confusing for you to fathom my behavior but its been equally confusing for me too, until today."

While Geet looked on Maan begin after a pause, "Antara, I never actually got to know your sister Geet, she always remained a puzzle for me. All through our childhood we knew each other through you. You were the common link between us, we always fought over you, as to who loved you more or who is more close to you. In-fact we never had anything to talk about except for you. But like they say things change with time and that's what happened in our case too. We got an opportunity to have a closer look into each other when we went abroad for further studies. I got to know that apart from you there were a whole lot of things that were in common between the two of us, like our love for Italian food, we both loved English hardcore action movies and we both loved hard rock. I found it strange for someone like antara who appeared to be so soft and sweet, yet it was a refreshing experience altogether. We started liking each others company and spent time joking and sharing secrets with each other and it was at this time that Antara told me about the guy in her class, though we both were doing MBA yet our areas of concentration were different. Her's was finance while I stuck to HR as it interest me more. We had a few common classes yet our classes for our respective subjects were different. And it during this time she had met Aakash, yes that was his name. I still remember the august morning when I found her all blushing by herself near the balcony of the apartment that we shared. On asking she had replied with a grin plastered on her face, that he was in love and the guy had just proposed to her. The piece of information was hard to digest for me amd I was all questions for her, as to who the guy was? Where she had come across him? How was he?where he lived? She had patiently handled all the questions and even offered me to introduce to the guy but on the condition that I keep it a secret from the family. I first couldn't understand the reason behind the secrecy but then she said that she wanted to me to first meet him and then eventually when we go back to India where her boyfriend was supposed to follow her break the news to the family"

Maan paused, he had moved a few paces away while narrating. he turned back to see as to how Geet was keeping up with all the information.

She seemed disoriented, still trying to grapple all the information thrown her way. her knees felt like jelly and she couldn't actually believe what she was hearing. her brows were held together and her eyes twinkled with innumerable questions, "how? i mean if she had a boyfriend, then you two? when did she have guy in her life? who was he? i cant underst..." she couldn't finish what she had been saying or rather asking it was too much for her to handle, she held her head with both her hands while her body swayed and before she met the soft grass of the lawn her petite structure was engulfed into two strong arms who held her protectively.

Maan was dreading this part, he cradled her face in his palms and held her close to his heart. his voice soft as a whisper as if trying to soothe her wounds,

"i know Geet it is a lot for you to take in. i never wanted to tell you, but its necessary. but before i start telling you any further, i want you to be strong because what lies beyond can be really hard for you take. so will you be strong?"

"You are scaring me Maan." her words came out in trembled whisper. "but i'll be strong for you"

Maan made her sit on the swing and sat beside her. Her body leaning against his tall and broad frame and he began again,

"So Antara loved Aakash and they were happy. they looked adorable.Though it was tough for Aakash to pass the pressure test" Maan smiled.

"what pressure test?' geet asked

"Whether he was the right guy for antara or not? you know Geet i made her promise me that if i disapprove of the guy then she would never see him again. She promised but she was confident. we had decided to meet at a coffee store by our place. Antara had strolled in arm in arm with him.at first sight he appeared plain simple, i even criticised his dressing sense taking a jibe at the color combination, i mean c'mon who wears a dark pant with a dark shirt. But he looked great, yes, he was handsome, tall around my height, broad shouldered with blue eyes and a smile that added a soothing calm touch to his face. he was patient and inspite of me ranting all along for how late he was and that he wore the wrong clothes and the wrong shoes, he took all of it in his stride.for he knew i was all Antara had in the name of guardian in the foreign land was me. I literally grilled him for 3 hours wanting to know everything about him, from where he hailed from to his ancestry to his family and even what pets he had? what cars he drove to what watches he had, whether he played video games, or he was into alcohol or smoking, how many past relations he had? he patiently answered all my questions and with each answer he scored a bulls eye. he was perfect and the biggest plus point he had was he truly loved Antara. Though in the beginning i had been wary about meeting him, but after knowing him we warmed up to each other and became great friends. From then on we became really thick. we would go for movies, picnics, shopping and even did group studies for our common papers. It was going great. Infact i even allowed Antara and Aakash go out on dates with the strict instruction that Antara should be home before nine. Antara used to be so happy, he face glowed and she couldn't stop smiling. I was happy and we were all waiting for our exams to get over so that we could fly back and tell our families. But then just when it all seems perfect something happens and everything just vanishes into thin air. It was a normal Monday morning, we were having extensive grueling sessions at the university because it was our final semester and Mondays used to be extra hard so we usually carried lunch from home so that we could sit in our classrooms working on our papers during lunch hour while taking a bite. I was busy packing lunch when i heard a thud and then something smashing against the floor. I ran towards the source of the sound.it was Antara, she was sprawled on the floor in fetal position while her body wracked in sobs. I was mortified for a second as i had no clue for her such behavior, i saw the glass water jug was broken into pieces and there was water all over. my first guess was probably Antara was hurt. I bent down and took her in my arms checking for nay injuries but she was unharmed. I shook her vehemently and asked her over and over as to what was wrong but all i got was silence, she held on to my shirt and cried like a baby. she was holding onto her phone in death grip in one hand. I took it from her and dialed the last incoming number. it was from one of our batch mates. What he said was beyond shocking. there had been a random shooting at our university campus and several students had been gravely injured and one of them was Aakash. We rushed to the medical center where Aakash had been kept in ICU. he battled with his life while Antara was battling with her emotions, she was broken, devastated. she cried and prayed. prayed to god for Aakash but alas god had something else planned. Aakash left us forever after battling with his life for 15 days."

Geet shuddered at the memory of the incident, she remembered how her father, Daarji and even Maan's grandma had been frantic. She too had cried for days and when she had called Maan he had seemed all calm and had even cracked jokes. But no one had the slightest of the inkling as to what actually had happened and the hardships and emotional turmoil that Maan and Antara had to go through. She held maan tight and sobbed.

'Please dont cry Geet please' he requested

"Maan then what happened?" geet asked

Maan continued, "Antara shut herself up, she refused to talk to anyone or even go to the university for the final semester. With special permission she stayed put at home and continued with her studies. but her mind was always preoccupied by the events of the past. The lovely memories. And many times i saw her breaking down, crying to herself.It pained to see Antara that way. So when Daarji insisted on coming i somehow stalled it saying i was handling it and had full control. I had to beg to Antara to speak to Daarji and she did, she when spoke to you.she literally had to gulp in her tears to keep her voice steady. It was huge loss for her. a month had passed and slowly and steadily antara was trying to come back to the present and it was the time when everything changed for me, everything turned upside down because it was not over".
