Meher walked down the hall carrying a large vase full of water.

"Meher, let me help you with that", offered Gaytri, as she took the heavy vase from her pregnant daughter-in-law. "You shouldn't be carrying any weights around you know?"

"Ma Ji, it's not that heavy", giggled Meher, as she followed her mother-in-law back into her room.
"Still", insisted Gaytri. "It's your last trimester and you should be careful not to strain yourself". She placed the vase on the table near the bed. "Is this okay here?"

"Yes that's fine, thank you", smiled Meher. "The baby is not even here yet and Preet got me some flowers for mother's day. I told him just to bring them for you, but he insisted on giving me some as well".

"Well good", smiled Gaytri, "Mommies to be also qualify to celebrate Mother's day. And I'm glad to hear that Preet is taking such good care of you".

"A little too good", laughed Meher. "Would you believe he actually compiled an entire list of do's and don'ts from information he gathered from the internet? And he reminds me to check it every morning and before I go to bed at night".

"Really?" said Gaytri. Meher nodded. "That's incredible. I never thought I'd see Preet turn into such a responsible person. It seems like only yesterday that he was a child himself, running around getting into all sorts of mischief".

"I can imagine", said Meher, "he must have been a handful".

"He was", smiled Gaytri. "especially after such tame children like Kulraj, Prem and Herman. Lalit would always complain, but deep down, he knew as well as I did, that Preet brought a lot of raunak into our lives".

"Do you have a favorite childhood story of his?" asked Meher.

"There are probably too many to count", laughed Gaytri. "Preet didn't go around looking for trouble, but trouble would always find him. I remember one day in particular..."

Flashback...

The principal, handed the student in front of her a prize, then adjusted her glasses and turned back to face the microphone. She cleared her throat, before proceeding with a wide smile on her face. "And now students, it's time for the award we've all been waiting for. It should come as no surprise, that as in previous years, this year's student of the year trophy once again goes to the student who has been consistently wowing us all with his achievements. This year, once again, the student coming in at the number 1 position is none other than Preet Juneja!"

Preet stood up and smiled, he nodded to his friends and winked at a few girls, before taking confident strides towards the podium. The student of the year trophy was his once again. He'd have to call Ma and let her know to make room on the shelf. Heck, at this rate, he'd have to ask her to have a new shelf built.

Preet climbed up on stage and accepted his trophy. He then shook hands with the principal and thanked her, before taking his place before the mike. He was about to give his acceptance speech, when an all too familiar voice called out to him.

"Preet uttho! School nahin jana kya?"

Ma? thought Preet. What is she doing here?

"Uff Ho!" cried Gaytri. "Yeh ladka bhi na...aise nahin mane ga".

Suddenly a loud "Fatak!" rang out.

Preet sat up straight and rubbed his cheek, stinging fresh from his mother's smack. "Ma!!" He cried.

"Don't Ma me young man", Gaytri said angrily. "Do you have any idea what time it is?! You've already missed the school van. Now hurry up and get dressed or you won't make it to school on time! Hmph! Raat ko dair se sota hai aur subha time pe uttha hi nahi!" She left the room shaking her head.

"Oh", sighed Preet. "So it was just a dream".

He picked up his clock and shook it angrily. It had stopped working just 5 minutes before the alarm was supposed to go off. "Stupid clock", said Preet. He was about to throw it down, when he remembered that he had borrowed the clock's batteries to replace the ones that had died out in his hand held video game.

Oops! He thought. Maybe the clock wasn't so stupid after all. Preet checked the time on his wall clock. Great! I still have 45 minutes to get to school. He ran to the bathroom, brushed his teeth and showered making sure to apply soap only in the vital regions, and was out and fully dressed in a record time of only 15 minutes.

Next, Preet headed for his shoes. "Oh No!" he said, "I forgot to polish my shoes. What would his homeroom teacher say when inspecting the student's dress? No time to worry about that now, he thought. The clock was ticking and he had to get to school first. He quickly pulled on his shoes and walked over to his desk and found his school books, calculator, pens, pencils and other supplies lying scattered on it. He looked around, but there was no sign of his book bag, which incidently, his mom had told him to pack before going to bed last night. But of course he had been too busy playing to bother.

Preet looked under his desk, in his closet, and then finally under his bed before locating his book bag. He quickly stuffed the items on his desk into his bag, before running downstairs. On his way down he pulled a comb out of his pant's pocket and stopped by the mirror in the hall to comb his hair, but for some reason they seemed unusually unmanageable today.

Preet was contemplating asking his father for a ride to school, when Lalit Juneja happened to pass by. He looked at his watch and frowned at Preet. "Pata nahin sheeshay ke samne khada ho ke kaunsa singhar karta rehta hai", complained Lalit. "Bal to aise bana raha hai jaise ke sara school ishi ko dekhne ata hai".

"Hmph!" Preet mumbled. "At least I have hair".

"I heard that!" Roared Lalit, as he proceeded to chase Preet. "Baap se aise baat karta hai!"

Preet dodged his father and ran down the stairs as fast as he could and into the dining area. "Ma help!" he cried as he jumped behind his mother and held onto her like a shield against his father's clutches.

"Uff ho!" cried Gaytri. "Aap dono bhi na subha subha shuroo ho jate hai! Really Lalit, woh to bacha hai. I expected a little more from you".

"Bacha?!? Ye bacha nahin sabka baap hai" cried Lalit. "Look at Kulraj, Prem, and Herman. They're so obedient and well behaved. I swear Gaytri, sometimes I wonder if the hospital made a mistake and this one got switched at birth".

"Haw!" cried Gaytri. "Is that any way to talk about your own child?" She handed Preet a glass of juice. "Sit down Preet, and I'll fix you some breakfast".

"There isn't any time Ma", said Preet. "That is, unless old chandni here wants to give me a ride to school".

"Chandni?!" cried Lalit. "Did you hear that Gaytri?" Tumhara laadla apne baap ko chandni bulata hai, and then he expects me to chauffer him to school. Forget it!"

Gaytri watched Lalit walk off shaking his head in anger. "Really Preet", she sighed. "You're incorrigible".

"Sorry mom", Preet said, shrugging his shoulders. "It just sort of slipped out".

"Yes well I'm afraid that slip of the tongue just cost you", said Gaytri. "You'll have to take the bus". She handed Preet a banana and nudged him out the door.

Preet quickly walked out of the house, devouring the banana on the way. When he was sure no one was looking, he tossed the banana peel onto one side of the lane. By the time he reached the bus stand, he found that the bus had already arrived, and he promptly joined the crowd rushing to get onto it. When it was his turn to climb on board, he took hold of the rod by the door and was about to pull himself up, but the swell of the crowd already inside the bus gave him a push and he fell back out. He quickly picked himself up, dusted his clothes and ignoring the snickers of the onlookers, climbed back inside the bus.

Soon the bus neared his destination, and Preet stationed himself by the doors, so he could make an easy exit. Unfortunately, when the bus came to a stop, the crowd of passengers rushing in was so great, that it carried him back inside the bus.

"Excuse me! Trying to get off! Excuse me!" cried Preet. But his cries fell on deaf ears and to his dismay, the doors closed just as he approached them and the bus began to move again. He did, however, manage to exit the bus at the next stop.

Grateful that his bus ordeal was over, Preet quickly checked his watch. There were only 5 minutes to 8 'O clock. He'd have to make a run for it if he wanted to reach school on time.

Preet ran as fast as he could, and made it into his classroom just as the bell rang. He sighed in relief as he slipped into his desk. Just then he heard someone giggle. He looked over to see some boys laughing and pointing at his feet.

What's so funny? He wondered. Hadn't they ever forgotten to polish their shoes? Preet looked down at his feet and immediately his face went red. The big toe of his right foot was sticking out of his shoe. Aren't these the shoes I was supposed to send to the shoemaker to have repaired? He thought. But of course, I was too busy playing to bother. Preet looked at his toe again. Like everything else today, it too seemed to be mocking him. How am I going to get through the rest of the day? He whined. But he didn't have to worry about his shoes for too long.

"Alright children", said the teacher, clearing his throat. "First period is mathematics. Please take out your copies and be prepared to have your homework checked".

Preet slapped his foreheard in frustration. Oh No! I was so busy playing video games last night that I forgot all about my Math homework! He smiled weakly as the teacher approached his desk and picked up his notebook.

"Where's your homework young man?" The teacher asked.

"I...uh...um...the dog ate it", Preet blurted out. As soon as he did, he knew he was in trouble, because the teacher was a friend of his father's and knew very well that they didn't have a dog.

"The dog?" said the teacher raising his eyebrow suspiciously.

"He...uh...we...uh...I just got one last night", said Preet, trying his best to look earnest.

A loud "Fatak!" rang out in the classroom, as the teacher reprimanded Preet.

Preet stood up and held onto one ear with one hand while rubbing his cheek with the other, where the teacher had just left his fingerprints. He swore he'd go home and throw out the video game, for which he had already been slapped twice in one morning. The rest of the school day thankfully passed by in a less eventful fashion, and soon it was time to go home.

Preet climbed into his school van, which dropped him off in the lane near his home. He would have to walk the rest of the way. Although the distance was not much to cover, it had begun to rain heavily and puddles of muddy water had formed throughout the lane. Taking care to maneuver himself around the puddles, Preet was reflecting over his terrible day, when he happened to step on a banana peel and slipped into the very puddles he was trying so hard to avoid. Preet cursed his bad luck. He was almost sure it was the same peel he had thrown in the lane that morning!

Preet picked himself up and quickened his pace. When he rang the bell of his house, his mother answered the door. Unable to recognize her son under all the mud that had splashed onto him due to his fall, she mistakenly assumed him to be a begger. "Maaf karo baba! Dinner is not ready yet. Come back later", she said.

"Ma!" cried Preet. "It's me...Preet! Your son!"

Gaytri peered closely at the boy standing in front of him, before breaking out into a hearty laugh. "Preet...what happened to you?" she asked in between bouts of laughter.

"Ye poochein ke aaj kya nahin hua mere saat", complained Preet, as he stormed off towards the bathroom.

After a shower and change of clothes, Preet felt much better. He went to the dining table where his mother had a plate of food ready. He could still hear her chuckle every now and then though.

After eating, Preet was heading to his room, when his father approached him. "Preet, your mother and I are going out for some shopping", said Lalit. "We should be back in about an hour. Do me a favor and iron this suit for me. I have an important meeting this evening".

"Sure dad", said Preet. He took the clothes to his room and placed them in his closet. He was tired. It's not like dad needs the suit right away, he thought. I'll just take some rest, and then start my work. The day had taken its toll on Preet and he fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. A short while later, he woke up refreshed from his nap.

Just then he heard his father call out. "Preet, where are my clothes? I'm getting late".

"I'll bring them out in a minute dad", said Preet. He quickly rushed to plug in the iron, but it wasn't turning on. Just then he noticed that the ceiling fan wasn't working either. Oh No! He thought. There must have been a power outage!

End of flashback...

"Poor Preet", said Meher. "I bet Bauji was furious".

"Oh no, not yet", said Gaytri. "You see Preet was not about to give up that easily".

Flashback...

Think Preet think! Preet scolded himself. If he had a genuine excuse, Bauji wouldn't be mad at him.

Preet made a dash for the bathroom, and quickly put some toothpaste on his brush and worked up a good lather in his mouth. He then slowly went downstairs, literally dragging himself until he fell at his mother's feet.

"Preet!" screamed Gaytri. "What's wrong?"

Preet rolled his eyes back into his sockets and let out a blood curling screech. Prem, Herman and Kulraj, who had just returned from their own respective classes, also ran to his side.

"Oh my God!" cried Gaytri. "Prem! Get the doctor! Kulraj get some water from the kitchen. Herman, get your father".

Lalit was watching the entire scene from one side of the room. Herman rushed to his side and pulled him to where Preet lay, apparently writhing in pain. The appearance of his father made Preet nervous, but in order to reinforce the fact that he was ill, he increased his dramatics by clutching his chest and moaning in pain.

"Lalit!" cried Gaytri, "don't just stand there! Do something!"

"Ahem", said Lalit. "Kya hua mere lal ko?"

"Dad", gasped Preet, "it really hurts. I think it's a heart attack. Ma, I don't think I'm going to make it".

Gaytri began to sob loudly.

"And where exactly did you say it hurts?" Lalit asked calmly.

Preet pointed to his chest, and let out another loud moan.

"Hmm...and since when did your heart start beating from the right side of your body?" asked Lalit.

Preet looked down to where he had been clutching his heart. His hands were indeed on the right side. "Um...uh...maybe...it slipped over to the right side when I fell", stuttered Preet.

End of flashback...

"Needless to say, it wasn't long before the sound of another "Fatak!" rang out in the Juneja house", said Gaytri.

"Poor Preet!" chuckled Meher. "I know I shouldn't laugh but...it's just too funny".

"Yes", laughed Gaytri, "but I tell you, that from that day on Preet learned his lesson. And he swore he wouldn't procrastinate again. And he didn't...for at least a week that is".

Just then Preet walked into his room. "Hey guys, what's up?" He said.

Meher and Gaytri looked at each other, struggling to keep from laughing.

"What's so funny?" asked Preet.

"Nothing", said Meher, as she placed her hand over her mouth in an effort to control her smile.

"Oookay", said Preet, as he walked over to his desk and picked up a file. His wife and mother sure were acting strange. "I just came up for this".

Meher and Gaytri watched Preet leave the room, then promptly burst out into a new fit of laughter.

"Happy Mother's Day Ma Ji", smiled Meher.

Happy Mother's Day to you to dear", said Gaytri.

This OS is based on a cute little story I once read in the kiddie section of a a foreign language newspaper.
