Chapter 42
The lead up to the marriage was a blur for Yash. He was trying to ignore it for as such as possible. He did not pay any attention to the preparation and only agreed to give his physical presence when required that too when it was unavoidable.
Gayatri tried to speak with him, tried to cheer him up but it was futile.
His "No one can take Aarti's place" stance was unshakable. But his words "believe me I have already tried it once and failed miserably" did not make any sense to Gayatri. What was he talking about she wondered.
She was more worried that Yash would not be able to bring himself to be a proper husband to the new girl Ishita. Although she herself did not like Ishita much; but she was willing to give her a chance. It however was not the case for Yash and so Gayatri felt sorry for Ishita. It just felt wrong to get a girl who would be full of dreams of getting a loving husband only to have them shattered on finding a husband who did not have the least bit of interest in her.
Ishita happiness and excitement grew with each passing day by contrast. She wanted to call Yash but decided against it. Maybe he might not like her being this forward she thought. Plus the time for learning about each other would be after the marriage she reasoned with herself. But her fascination with her fiance grew with every passing day. She came to know what a whiz he was in his field, she came to know that he was a much sort after man in society and everyone respected him. His persona was becoming all the more attractive to Ishita and in her heart her craze for her would be husband started to grow unaccountably. His being remote from her and making no effort to get to know her or call her up or meet her was making him mysterious and for that reason all the more alluring.
The other members of the Scindia clan tried not to notice the disinterest on the groom part, they had seen Yash marry Aarti after Arpita and had seen him be happy correct that incredibly happy with her. So if history was anything to go by they were doing a good thing in getting Yash remarried again or so they told themselves to feel better.
Yet again there was Smriti getting restless for the somedays for inexplicable reasons. She was having recurring dreams of loving hands reaching her, of caressing her face and whispering something. A voice in her head kept repeating
"Don't say bye...say see you soon"
That voice held so much love in it that she used to wake up in mid-sleep not able to sustain hearing those words and not dwelling into who could have uttered those words.
----------------
The day of the marriage around 10 months from the blast
Smriti had gone to give the lunch box which Akash had forgotten at home. She was glad for Aakash that he could get a job for himself. She was more glad however to see the stress lines go away from Radha maa face. Her heart went out for the older woman, from what she could make out the older woman did not have an easy life. It seemed that Aakash father was never in the picture and so raising a son single handed must have proven to be very difficult. She had full sympathy for Radha, however what she was not liking was Aakash's growing feelings for her. She did not want to give any encouragement to that. To her Aakash was like a friend and she never saw him as anything else. She knew that Aakash wanted to take their relationship into another plane altogether. She had to make it clear once and for all that she had no place for anyone ever in her life.
As she approached Aakash's work place her steps started to slow down a bit. Her senses were being bombarded by unclear, incomplete images. She stilled to drive the sense of unease away but it persisted. It kept increasing as she crossed the gate and entered the pathway leading upto the house.
Her hands went to her temples, her head was pounding. The tiffin box dropped from her hand as a result. She could make out from the decoration that some sort of function was going on in the house. She started taking slow steps towards the main door. If she could just find Aakash here, she was sure he would help her out. She did not want to faint, she could not afford to fall sick too. So she dragged herself to the door, her mind finally registered that a marriage was going on. Her eyes searched for Aakash...where was he...why was he not seen anywhere. Just then her eyes were drawn towards the mandap of their own accord. The bride dazzled in her bridal attire the groom had his head turned the other way as he was listening to the pandit. Just then Aarti's head spun again.
"Oh my god" she whispered in the faintest of voices. She held out her hand to grab hold of the door frame. Waited a second to steady herself and turned back thinking it was for the best to take an auto and head home before matters worsened.
Her voice drifted inside the house. No one heard it, no one noticed a woman standing by the door. But one man did...one man who was burning from inside, one man who was following the bride around the holy fire under duress. That man stopped taking the steps that were going to bind him to the woman along with him.
It was the same man who on tracing the source of the voice withdrew himself totally from whatever he was doing and pushed aside everyone and everything and made a wild dash towards the woman, as if his life depended on it, leaving all the guests and family members totally flabbergasted.
-------------------------
Smriti had reached quite a distance but she heard some one call her name...or at least to her ears it sounded that way. No there was something wrong. Why did her name sound different? She stopped and turned around with some difficulty the sun was blazing and it made her squint at some distance she saw the man she had come in search of but he was not calling out her name, in fact he was standing as still as a statue.
But Smriti's relief knew no bounds she again traced her steps backwards slowly at first and then increasing her pace as the physical and mental distress she was feeling increased. She had to go to him had to find comfort from the overwhelming sensations bombarding her.
On her way to Akash she saw a man from the corner of her eye, but something made her not look at him, something made her to keep running towards Aakash. She had this instinct in her that told her that life as she had been living for the past few months had come to an end and that she would have to face up to her past no matter what it was or who was held in her past.
As she crashed into Aakash who kept staring at her and then at the man in front of him alternatively; and thinking that had Smriti been in his arms any other time he would have welcomed her. He would have thanked the lord above for granting his wish but everything had changed. Everything had changed in the few minutes since he had gone to Yash's room to keep some things as was instructed to him by one of this employers. He could no longer think of Smriti in that light. It was an indecent thing to do. He could be many things but he was definitely not a man to want a married woman.
Smriti detected the stiffness in Aakash a sort of reserve that was absent before. She finally loosened her grip on Aakash, she did not know why she hugged Aakash especially when she had decided already to not let him think of her in any romantic way. She was using Aakash as a shield against something...something that was again making her weak. She knew hugging Aakash was a bad idea so she put some distance between them and started to apologise.
"Aakash...I am sorry. I should not have..."she started to and stopped not knowing what to tell him. But finally the weakness she was feeling caught up with her and it seemed easier to just give into it. And she did, as all the resistance left her and she started to fall down. And on her trail downward she grabbed fistful of Aakash's shirt as she collapsed in a heap. Aakash did not know what to do, it took all his effort and self control not to hold on to Smriti. But he gave up and loosened his fists and bent to lift Aarti.
"Don't you dare lay a hand on her" Aakash heard Yash say and the intent in the man's voice made Aakash stop midway.
Yash did not understand anything. All he could think was that he not bear to see his Aarti in another man's embrace. His relief and happiness was quickly masked by anger as he marched towards where Aarti lay. He bent down and took her in his arms giving a stern look to Aakash who backed away from both of them. He needed to go away from here the thought, he needed to clear his head and come to terms with what he had seen in Yash Scindias bedroom; huge portraits of Smriti along with Yash and the kids. It could only mean one thing and that effectively snuffed any feelings he had for her.
"Yash" Pankaj called out as Yash marched into the house with Aarti unconscious in his arms. He paid no attention to anyone or anything. He slowed a bit though and called out
"Pratik call the doctor and ask him to come home immediately" with that he continued walking.
He just wanted to make sure Aarti was alright. So he took her to their room and laid her on the bed. As he was about to take his hand away from behind her head a strand of her hair got stuck in the cuff button of his sherwani as if stopping him from going away...as if even in her condition she could not bear the distance from him. Very carefully he disentangled the hair and stood straight eyeing Aarti thoroughly from head to toe. He just could not have enough of her. His body had this strange buzz in it, the vigor that had totally vaporized since her disappearance returned with a vengeance. His mind and body reacted in indescribable ways seeing his Aarti in front of his eyes. His hands again itched to touch her just to make sure she was real but he forced restrain on himself and put his hands in his pockets just to check himself...he then looked heaven words and sent a silent prayer to thank god for giving his life back to him and again making a request to ensure that she was all right. No doubts...no questions...nothing came to his mind just then only relief and a rejuvenating sense of happiness flowed through him as his eyes stung with tears of joy.
Just then all his family members rushed into the room and Yash hated the intrusion but knew it was unavoidable.
"Aarti.. yes it is Aarti..she is alive...Oh my god...how could this happen..." Gayatri was the first to speak up, her hands going to her face in shock.
"Mummyji this is a miracle...our Aarti has come back to us, Yash bhaiya's and the children's prayers have been answered...oh I just cannot believe my eyes" Vidhi too gave voice to her sheer delight which was mixed with shock.
"But how did she survive the blast...its unbelievable? I mean...where was she till now? How did she come to us now...today...right in time" Pari questioned still not believing her eyes herself and her cautious mind coming up with questions that kept trying make her disbelieve what she was seeing.
The kids rushed and jumped onto the bed alongside Aarti's unconscious form.
"We knew you would come back mumma...we knew god would understand us and give you back to us" Ansh said as tears of happiness started flowing from his eyes as he took Aarti's hand in his.
"Our mumma has come back for us...we don't need a new mumma anymore" Palak said in between her tears holding onto the other hand along with an equally emotional Payal.
Her mentioning about 'new mumma' jolted Yash. He suddenly remembered that outside a marriage party was waiting for him. He knew he had to face up to them and apologise for cancelling the wedding. But that was the right thing to do. How could he possibly go ahead with the wedding with is Aarti well and truly alive in front of his eyes.
Yash headed to the mandap leaving Aarti behind in the room with his mother, bhabhi, pari and children after making sure that the doctor was on his way to the house. His brother followed along with him.
He knew he will be causing a lot of pain and humiliation to the bride in waiting and her family and he knew there was no way out of this. This just had to be done no matter the amount of suffering the other party might have to undergo.
So with hands folded and head bent he asked for pardon.
"Ishitaji..."Yash started and stopped he could see the tears that had rolled from her eyes, he could see her backing away as if sensing the bad news that was coming her way. Her shake of the head trying to dismiss whatever he was going to say made Yash suddenly feel guilty and feel sympathy for the poor woman in front of him. He shook off that feeling and proceeded to do the right thing but was interrupted.
"What is the meaning of this Yash? You leave the mandap midway through the pehera and return with a woman in your arms. Can't you see how embarrassing all this is for us"Ishita's father spoke up with justified anger.
"I can understand what you must me feeling..."Suraj Pratap who was managing the stage since his son's sudden departure tried to pacify the agitated minister.
"You understand nothing Scindiaji...your son just rubbed my nose in the mud, my prestige and my name has been washed away when he decided to leave my daughter at the mandap for some woman. God knows where he picked her up from..." the minister said with mounting anger and disgust.
"Hold it right there...that woman about whom you are so carelessly talking about happens to be my wife"Yash said with growing irritation at having to listen to the minister bad mouthing his wife.
"What? What rubbish are you talking about? Didn't you wife die in that Delhi bomb blast?" Ishita's father questioned obviously shocked on hearing what Yash had said.
"Well as you can see she did not...die and as she has returned to me...and so I am no longer in a position to marry anyone let alone your daughter. I am a married man...married to Aarti Yash Scindia and I cannot and will not do anything to jeopardize that"Yash told firmly putting across his stand on the matter once and for all.
Ishita slumped on seeing her dreams shatter. How could this happen to her? A second time...her marriage was getting cancelled for no fault of hers...why her...why always her? Her mother came to hold her to stop her from falling down. She looked into her mothers eyes and her mother lowered her eyes not able to give any consolation to her daughter.
The minister knew he was helpless under the circumstance so he decided to retreat.
"Fine in that case...what are we doing here any longer? "the minister said as he stomped away from the mansion. He did not even bother to console his crying daughter as he was too much bothered about how badly his pride had taken a beating.
Ishita too followed her father out along with her mother but she kept looking back at what could have been...no what should have been hers...had that wretched woman not turned up as she did at the wrong time...why couldn't she have stayed dead for ever...then she shook her head...thinking what good such thinking would do to her.
Slowly all the guests who had come started to leave as well. Some of them enquired about Aarti too but eventually the mansion was devoid of any outsiders. The house which was filled with them now was empty in striking contrast. Suraj Pratap looked into his son's eyes and said with a huge sigh
"So you were right after all...Aarti bahu is alive..."
Yash just returned the look without blinking and turned to head back to the room where Aarti rested. His mind made up to call his father in law immediately who had orchestrated this whole third marriage of his but had remained absent as he could not bear his daughter's place being given to someone else. Yash could only imagine bauji's reaction when he would come to know that his daughter had come back from the land of dead to that of living.
