Another weekend update! As promised (: You know, I was very worried when jazmeen brought up the point about how she wasn't sure how Asad and Zoya are handcuffed. It is my fault though, I haven't really been emphasizing it. But anyway as a reminder, here's the sentence from Part 4 describing their situation:
"...the inspector slipped the handcuffs onto his left wrist and Zoya's right wrist..."
Please do take note of this! Because I do believe that this visualization is quite crucial for my next few updates haha. Alright without further ado, here you go (:
Mangalpur Madness: Part 9
"Dekho, dekho! They're handcuffed! Why did Maryam invite criminals to the wedding?" Asad and Zoya heard a buzz of gossip around them, as Zoya cowered and tried to hide their joined hands with her dupatta. Asad gruffly stopped her and was just about to make an announcement to everyone about their mistaken identity by the police inspector, when Mansoor beat him to it.
"Keep quiet all of you! Maryam, remember I told you the inspector had caught the wrong couple when he called me to identify the robber from this morning? This was the poor couple he arrested! Asad, Zoya, thank you so much for helping Maryam out the last time. I will forever remain indebted to both of you," Mansoor thanked Asad and Zoya, as he shook Asad's free hand in the form of greeting him.
"But I don't understand why the inspector didn't release you guys from your handcuffs," Mansoor continued, a slight frown creasing his forehead. Another buzz of gossip immediately began around them, as everyone began commenting on how their luck was bad to get into trouble with the police for no reason.
"He forgot where he put the keys," Asad replied, gritting his teeth as he did. Mansoor patted Asad's arm in a bid to calm him down, and then began guiding Asad and Zoya into the house. Everyone else followed behind them as Mansoor sat them down, and asked Maryam to get some refreshments for them. Maryam nodded and dragged a few girls in with her to help her.
"Bhaijaan, can you get a locksmith to break open our handcuffs?" Zoya asked Mansoor. The frown that was already adorning Mansoor's face deepened further upon being called 'bhaijaan' by the beautiful lady. Taken aback, he didn't answer Zoya, and just stared blankly at her. Asad simply chuckled to himself, and rested their joined hands on his lap, in clear view of everyone, especially Mansoor. Zoya was his; everyone ought to take note of that. Zoya, oblivious as ever, did not even realize what was going on around her. She prodded Mansoor's shoulder with her finger to gain his attention and repeated her question.
"Oh sorry, woh kya hai na, the village's only locksmith doesn't stay here. He's from the neighbouring village, and he's only here during the day time. He's gone back now that night has fallen, he'll only be back tomorrow morning," Mansoor explained, once he'd snapped out of his confusion. He watched Asad and Zoya share a look of exasperation. He was starting to feel really bad for them; all this was kind of his fault since he was the one who lodged a police complaint in the morning.
"You've got to be kidding me! Mr Khan, can't we use a gun and shoot the chain like last time..." Zoya began to describe, but trailed off when she heard a collective gasp around her, followed by another round of gossip.
"Allah miyan, they are criminals! They use guns and stuff!" Asad rolled his eyes at the senseless gossip around them. The best part was that the incident Zoya was talking about happened in this very village where the villagers were now judging them. It wasn't like their fathers, husbands and brothers don't use weapons like swords and knives in this backward place, so it was really ironic for them to come up with such deductions.
"Like last time when we watching that Hindi serial on TV? And the main leads were handcuffed, and then this man came and shot the chain for them?" Zoya burst out in the middle of the gossip, as she tried to cover up what she had said earlier. The buzz around them stopped, but it was replaced with a round of laughter instead.
"Beta, that was just a fictional TV show! They do all sorts of unrealistic stuff on TV. Don't mix up reel and real life," an old lady standing near Zoya began to reason patronizingly. Zoya groaned in frustration. To think she thought dealing with Asad was bad, it seemed like everyone in this village seemed to enjoy being judgmental and jumping to conclusions. She sighed deeply and shook her head, as a sign of defeat. Looks like she and Asad were destined to remain handcuffed to each other for a while longer.
