Chap 7 :
"Hello Darling, how are you doing?"
Darling ??? !!!!
Her stomach lurched with a creepy gnawing fear. Her heart was beating like the tempest. She felt like throwing up.
She had been overjoyed to find perfectly amazing wifi in Maan's flat and had logged onto the forum from her phone. Only to find a PM from SoapStar sitting on top of her inbox. She checked the time of the message and it was sent exactly five minutes ago.
The pop up window chimed in again to show up another private message.
SoapStar "I just wanted to chat. Hope I did not disturb. Don't worry about the darling. I call everybody that."
But that fear had already crept up in her leading to cancerous goose bumps. She had to find out who this person was. It was not very smart to stalk him with her present ID.
She immediately logged out and logged in with her super duper secret ID which was hidden from even her online friends. It was called PetriDish. She immediately hit SoapStar on the members list search and checked his posts. She browsed through a couple of them and it was mostly as he said 'awesome', 'fabulous', 'simply amazing', 'loved the update'. Nothing to indicate who he might be as a person.
And suddenly a private message window popped up in her new ID too. With renewed dread she opened the message to find "Gotcha! PetriDish is too condescending of you. DabanggDamsel suits you better."
Hey Babaji, this guy was well versed with the art of online stalking too. He had checked his dashboard to find out that PetriDish ID had accessed his profile and had connected it with her so easily. Either she was super stupid or he was a brainiac.
As she logged out of the forum from the phone she let it sink in that this SoapStar person knew who she was exactly and was not backing off. She sat stiff for about an hour before the door bell rang.
Grateful for the company she ran to the door and opened it with an exaggerated flourish. Maan was stuffing something into his bag and looked up. He seemed totally oblivious to her mental state. Or may be it was not that obvious. He walked in looking a bit tired and flopped on the sofa.
Maan "So how did it go? Did you get bored."
She was nursing her pounding forehead when Jane started chanting.
"Who is Maan. Where is Maan."
Maan rubbed his eyes "I have to feed her now. I hope she did not disturb you too much. She is very cranky when she is alone."
Geet gulped "Ah…Maan…"
Maan narrowed his eyes "Let me guess, you fed her the apple?"
Geet nodded sadly "I did not know what to do. I have never had a pet before let alone a talking one which gave orders."
Maan was literally pulling his hairs out of their roots "Forget it. She is going to wake me up at night now."
Geet tugged her ears sheepishly "Sorry, I was not aware. I saw your message after I fed her."
Maan sighed "It was my mistake. I realized about Jane while I was driving and sent you a message as soon as I reached. Man, the teacher went on and on today. I almost fell asleep."
Geet "Where do you go for this class? Is it too far."
Maan "In terms of distance it is not much. But traffic is killing. They conduct classes in this old government school building which has a fickle minded fan. In this weather it is ok. In summer I will get baked."
She contemplated telling Maan about the SoapStar guy. After all Maan was a senior and knew the college more than her. He would most likely be in a better place to track the soap suds guy.
Geet "Maan…"
Maan "Hmm."
Geet "If I wanted to…ah….I don't know how to put this…"
She was shifting in her chair with uneasiness. She did not enjoy sharing her online identity with anyone. Much less an opinionated guy like Maan.
Maan frowned "Yes Geet, any problem?"
Geet shook her head deciding against it. She had to deal with this on her own.
Maan "Anyway come let me drop you to the hostel before it gets too late and curfew time starts."
They were driving in the direction of the college.
Maan "Geet, you can drop by anytime you want to the flat. If you want to watch TV or just need a quiet place to study. But I would appreciate it if you did not bring one big gang over."
Geet nodded and bit her lip thoughtfully.
Maan "Would you like to go out sometime? Like a movie or something like that."
She saw his face smiling and his fingers drumming on the steering wheel in anticipation. Of course she would like it. Which girl wouldn't? She nodded slowly.
Maan beamed "Ok great. Once you feel better about your sinus and all, we can plan something."
Geet "Hey Babaji, I have workshop tomorrow! How will I stand it."
Maan "Oh that is bad."
Geet "Makes you wonder right. Why they make us do carpentry, metal filing, soldering, drilling and what not. We are supposed to be soft would be software engineers! By the time that stupid workshop ends I feel I have worked out at a greasy child labor sweatshop. I cannot even get one dove tail joint right you know. I tried four times. My fingers hurt and to top it all those huge lathe machines scare me. They have the newest technology in lathe I believe and they still have not upgraded it….I…"
Maan "Don't worry about the workshop thing. It can be arranged."
Geet stared "What! What do you mean 'arranged'?"
Maan "Our great Ganesh knows a few people who can do any joint for a fee. Or else we can talk to the attendant to sell some old pieces from seniors to us and you can submit. Don't sweat it. Just go there for pass time and attendance."
She was gaping "What! But isn't that against your 'principles'? I thought Xeroxing and copying was a bad thing for you."
Maan nodded "Of course those things are bad. But how fair is it for the university to dump this common syllabus on everyone when we clearly don't want to do it? Girls like you are obviously delicate and cannot do such hard manual work. You yourself said so. If you ask me they should teach students what they signed up for and not make us do all mechanical engineering portions."
Geet agreed seriously. Yes from the point of view of delicate students, the new principle held true.
Geet "The worst part is I look like an elephant in those stupid workshop clothes. It is not a flattering design."
Maan laughed "You look adorable in that outfit. I have seen you in it."
Geet heart was beating faster. Did he just say 'adorable'?
Maan "See what matters is how the person carries off their clothes. Don't care so much about fashion and all. I don't worry about what I wear."
Oh ya that was clear.
Maan "But I look good, right?"
Maan's eyes were questioning.
Geet was biting her nails and smiling sheepishly "Yes, you look good."
She saw Maan's palms gripping the steering wheel tighter. The car halted to a stop in front of the hostel and they got down. Suddenly she felt as if she were hit by a hurricane.
"PROOF! What the hell are you doing here."
Tears were streaming down Geet's face at having felt the familiar skin of her dear friend.
Maan "Proof?"
Proof was grinning and Geet was rubbing away a slurp kiss on her cheek.
Geet "Ah this is my best friend Prafulla. Proof this is Maan, friend."
Proof let go and immediately looked skeptically at Maan. Maan was no less skeptical.
"Hi, nice meeting you.", said Proof in her – beware of me – voice.
Maan repeated in his usual clipped tone "Yes same here. Geet I will get going. I will call you later. Bye."
Geet waved him a bye again and turned back to find a dancing solo from Proof's brow.
