Animated chess had me smiling again... so the elephants should scowl and the horses should grin for you Sheesh? Coming soon to a store near you...😆
Maan is still an enigma to me. Is he playing with her or just indulging her for the sake of his brother's success?
Geet with her writing comments hit a nerve. How many Arifs do you have? I think I am one for myself😕
Thanks for the update.
Missed Geet Franks interesting diary...

Not for writing but I have had many Arif's for almost everything else. 😔
So I guess I am sort of immune to it all. I have developed a thick skin over the years.

Aww but you write good. Don't be so hard on yourself. Try to enjoy it and experiment. It is fun, trust me.

AAre you unpredictable in real life or is your writing a manifestation of what you are not in real? Just curious... and hmmm.. your comment on prophesies 👏 and Maan's on drugs and writing ke liye rehab 🤣

Love it 🤗

And I am glad you do not care for the Arifs around if you know what I mean 😉 Waise I often wonder if most good writers aren't split personalities... asking and replying to most questions themselves 😕 😆

Don't worry about my brain 😃. It is already certified by appropriate authorities.
In real life I am a DQ big time and have a short fuse.
But my problem is I am surrounded by bigger DQs and hence my thoughts and reactions get dwarfed in comparison 😕. I am the 'normal' person in my family. So you see since I don't get a chance to voice my thoughts amidst all the mayhem I have taken to writing.

Split personality. I think glassdoor is the person you are talking about. I am a sweet person. Oh wait is that me again?

Hahahaha... you are a sweet sneak Sheesh, Glassdoor, whoever 😕.. HUH... 😆

But seriously, if you're "normal" only within contexts of your immediate environment ofcourse, I shudder at what they would write if they ever applied themselves to it 😲 😆 Our pleasure reading you here milady... seriously... looking forward to you voicing your thoughts again, then again and then some again 😳 God bless the bigger DQs around you... or else this medium would never have happened 😆

Hi folks 😃
Here is the next update. Njoi!
Lots of Love!!

Chap 27 :

Geet:

She looked up expecting him to be in his Maanstein avatar. Instead she was bowled over by the broad grin on his face; 'Hey Babaji, save me from this man!'

But his smile as it turned out was because of the check mate. Apparently he had done it in record number of low moves. She saw him placing the pieces neatly back to their starting positions as his mood returned to a good one.

"Am I smart enough to become a writer?" she asked her heart beating in acute shame at having voiced her deepest fear. But somehow saying it in front of Maan made it seem alright. She was probably dissuading herself from making any emotional investment in him by putting him in a position of tenable guide. Whatever the basis of her reasoning she was hoping she would hear nothing but honest truth from him.

He looked at her with a lopsided smile "What does 'becoming a writer' even mean? I have no idea actually. All I know is a person who can use borrowed intelligence to good effect can become a good anything."

She stared back at him unable to decipher the conundrums he was weaving. His eyes however were not mocking her for the lack of understanding. Instead they willed her to follow.

Maan "See Geet, not everyone is smart in every possible way. We are all human and have weaknesses which we have to learn to accept with confidence. A person who is reasonable with his or her own self can reach great heights. You wouldn't even possibly hold a pen in your hand if you weren't interested in writing. See now someone has to persuade me to even read a good book. But you are not that way. Your active aggressive interest in it means that you have something special going on and it makes you feel alive. Don't listen to the voice that says 'Am I good enough?' I am not great at giving pep talks for I don't know all these brilliant quotes and anecdotes to give you."

Geet frowned down at the king that was feeling afraid of being attacked from all sides in every possible game whichever side he seemed to pick to fight on. What did people have against him? He had no voice that could protest and say, 'Spare me for this one game please' But little did the regal king realize that he was the only one who survived till the end. Once he was gone everyone else was a moot piece.

Maan "Geet look at me."

She was possibly red eyed and redder faced. But his nose had a soothing effect on her. She felt like touching the strong razor sharp bone that rose from it. That is what made him the king; the sharpness, wit and humorous way of looking at even grave things. His smile was saddening maddening and brightening at the same time.

Maan "Rejections are always a part of the journey. Tomorrow when you are successful you must have a story to tell of how much you had struggled and how you had no food, shelter or a Godfather to help you. If Dev achieves something there is nothing great about it. But if people like you and Arif achieve something it is indeed a story that people will be eager to hear. Your weaknesses are your interesting story."

She smiled at the profoundness of the statement that seemed to be lost on her pea brain. He screened her face for any sign of registration. When he didn't obviously see any he continued.

Maan "I can tell you the success story of a clever girl. A little girl who did not even know how to play chess but drew against two grandmasters by using borrowed intelligence. She just adroitly played them against each other without them having any clue about it. Does it mean she is a phony? Not at all, she is as clever as the grandmasters who slogged day and night to reach where they were. But all the girl did was divide and conquer."

Divide and conquer. That was simple right? She wanted to clap her hands in mute delight.

Maan continued seriously "So you see the grandmasters were so lost in their own ego to be successful that they failed to realize someone was playing them instead of the game. That is how the world works. Give people a smokescreen so they forget the name of the game they are playing."

Geet "So what should I do now?"

Maan "Just keep on doing what you do best and I assure you I have your back. I said the same thing to Arif. He was also grumbling about how he was taking too big a risk. But doing a little something extra above your comfort zone is what gets you higher. See now I am lecturing and boring you. You left college to escape those lecturers so you could work with handsome young men like me."

She was giggling at the tact of the man "Yes that is why I left college. I will tell that if anybody asks me henceforth."

He was smiling "Don't worry be happy lioness. The jungle as far as you can cover belongs to you."

And now who would be the lion who would preserve the territorial integrity?

Geet added with a tinge of sadness "Why are you so good and nice? It is almost painful and unreal."

Maan "Oh I am not nice to the undeserving. But I am attracted to people with that spark in them which makes them special. It is not everyday that one meets a girl who can talk shop with anyone and make them feel sort of inferior for not realizing things that she did. It is hard to come across people who can voice their thoughts about anyone to their face. You make people relax in your company by being the insane one."

Unknown to her tears were flowing from her eyes. What had she said or done to deserve this? It was daunting to be the person he wanted her to be. It had all been wit by chance until now.

Maan "Don't go all emotional on me now. I pride myself on my instinct to back the right people. But that does not mean you have anything to prove to me. I would be satisfied if you were to be happy."

Geet "I don't deserve this. I don't deserve a person like you."

Maan smirked "Ya ya. Come on now let us go for a team dinner. For these people my birthday from last year is not over until they are 'treated' for it."

Geet "Vow dinner! Where are we going exactly?"

Maan nodded "Not decided yet. I was hoping you could help with the choice of restaurant. Please keep in mind my purse strings while deciding ok. I am not using the company card for it."

Geet nodded seriously "Don't worry I will zero in on the cheapest possible place that has five stars."

Maan smiled "You are getting spoilt quickly. Good job, see you later then."

She was standing in the brilliantly lit foyer of a beautiful classy elegant restaurant that she had found on Facebook. It catered mainly to preorders and the food was always cooked for every client separately and there were no walk-ins allowed. She checked with the concierge for the registration and menu that she had decided upon. It was all going according to plan. She had chosen to wear the only decent dress she had that could suit the place and occasion. An elegant off shoulder black number and black uncomfortable stilettos. It was a wonder that she had reached so far on them.

She turned back and for one moment even words that were not formed in her mind yet were stuck in her throat. The entire room was burgeoning with peppiness due to the suavity and distinguished aura of the man before her. He was pensively enquiring after the reservations no doubt and she could see his chin and grit relaxing upon knowing all was well.

He turned and stopped in his tracks. There was no way she was mistaken about his expression this time. He soaked in her entire look before showing any sign of recognition. She always had great legs and it was a grouse amongst all her friends as to why she did not show them off often enough.

He stood in front of her now trying to make sense of her transformation.

"Not bad Geet Handa" said he with his eyes twinkling with appreciative amusement.

Just then Naintara Rathod entered and Geet herself was blown away. Tara had chosen to wear a simple elegant burgundy chiffon saree with a smatter of silk. It flowed round her curves and complemented them to perfection. Her face had a minimalistic make up as if it were an insult to her perfect bone structure to put on more. Her jewelry too was authentic and minimalistic. How the hell did Maan resist this ravishing beauty who could make even a woman swoon? Geet was waiting with breathless rapt attention to find out his reaction to her.

But Maan smiled with one of those smiles he gave to people when he was on stage. The kind that said 'I am smiling at the wall behind you.'

"You look nice Tara.", he said perfunctorily when he was not even looking in Tara's direction. Geet heaved a sigh of unexpected relief. Her chest had been pent up with unreleased toxic carbon dioxide asphyxiating her.

Tara seemed pleased with what she considered as a compliment "Geet you look nice too. Doesn't she MK?"

Maan was already looking towards the entrance expecting the rest of the button team.

Tara smiled apologetically "He is never good with compliments."

Geet smiled back "I understand."

Tara "Hey this is a great place. I have never been here though."

Geet "I heard the food is great and the wine selection is also good."

Tara laughed "Are you sure you should be drinking wine Geet?"

Geet "But you can though right?"

Tara considered that a compliment again. Seriously this lady was royally dense. Why had Maan ever been friends with her Geet wondered. May be Tara was basically a good person by nature. Otherwise Geet just didn't see it.

By that time the others had arrived. They were all seated in a cozy exclusive marquee. The topics were the usual however filtered office banter. After all the CEO's brother was sitting amongst them. But things like that never stopped Y2K.

His tongue rolling with the red wine he began "MK come on now, Dev Khurana must have a list which consists of supermodels, movie actresses or at least beauty queens. Don't give me the bull that he is single."

Maan's smile however was not his usual relaxed one. He repeatedly kept checking his phone as if he were expecting a call from someone important.

Maan "Why don't you ask him? I am sure he would be happy to discuss with you."

Yash grinned "If only Sir was such a good sport as you. Now I know for sure you will share with us who the lucky dame is."

Maan "Well she didn't return my calls. I am checking as we speak."

Yash "Come on MK, tell us who she is. Ok at least share with us what she does. Just so we understand the type. For I don't believe we quite understand yet what your type is."

Maan smiled "Every beautiful girl is my type. But then all girls are beautiful right?"

Meera "Yash stop bugging him. As if he is going to kiss and tell us of all people."

Yash "Ah wine has a unique way of getting people to spill out secrets."

Meera "Well he wouldn't be spilling if you are the one drinking. Don't start yapping nonsense and make this embarrassing."

Yash "Where is my darling Pink?"

Meera "She has gone out with Vicky."

Yash was saddened but thankfully regulated his drinking and talking for the rest of the evening. And it was not vodka either. Geet was dreading every second that Pink bitch and Rapunzel would find their way into the conversation.

Maan was silent for most part of the evening listening to the faint mellow music playing from a distance. He looked so far removed from the rest of the crowd that for one moment she wondered why they were all at the said place at all.

Maan "Chalo guys. I am getting late. I have an early meeting tomorrow. So got to turn in early. Anyone need a lift?"

Meera was the designated driver for Yash and Tara. So it was only Geet who ended up in the car with Maan. He still looked serious all the way long.

Geet "Is something bothering you Maan? Did I mess up something with the arrangements. Was it very expensive."

Maan "I have a lot on my mind. It has nothing to do with the evening though. Thanks for making such great arrangements on such short notice."

Geet gave a small smile "Don't mention it."

Maan just grunted and went about his driving business. It was better not to disturb a great mind at work. Soon enough they reached her place and she had barely mumbled a bye before the car took off. She did not really mind that he had not spoken much. She enjoyed his brooding silence too.

She walked in - feeling kind of drowsy although it was just nine - to her normal looking household. Life couldn't have been more usual.

She was struggling to get out of the black dress that seemed to be stitched on when her phone rang. Her dress had managed to reach till the waist when she picked up the incessant call.

Geet "Hello I am kind of in…"

"Geet, Arif here."

She stopped and sat down.

Arif "You know your visit got me thinking. I realized I was being prejudiced somewhat and hence went through the excerpts that you had sent me from your college mag. Guess what, one of our writers absolutely went gaga over it. It was a piece titled 'Mahesh babu's first encounter with cereal.' She is talking to one of the cartoonists to have it done in caricatures. Needless to say we are changing the name. This cartoon column will be printed on the back hard bound cover of the published book. For every book sold you will receive a royalty of…"

Was she hallucinating this? There was no way in hell this was possible. A person who was his own boss and had refused to even look at her work had gone ahead and agreed to publish it on no less than a back cover? What had changed since she had met Arif last.

Hadn't he looked at her work before offering a job in the cafe and already mentioned that he did not consider her work for the college mag. If Geet's poor memory were to be dredged upon, his exact words were 'I don't usually go by those. You might have sought ideas from others there.' Some people were just so fickle minded.

She looked down at her palm shaking as if it had a personality of its own threatening to detach itself and travel all over the world.

Arif "Are you there Geet? Aside from royalty you will be receiving a nominal advance. Needless to say if our sales are not as projected you can keep the advance money for all the hard work that you did. Keep doing whatever you are doing. In fact we are thinking of publishing children's books too. So if you have any such funny anecdotes that are about fire safety for kids or….."

The rest of the conversation was a blur. Her tear glands were now going into overdrive refusing to stop demanding to touch an understanding shoulder.

Arif "Geet come on give me your account number right now. I will make the transfer before I forget and while I have the cash ready. My current account is running dangerous low."

She hung up after she had conveyed what was hopefully her correct account number when she heard a little voice.

"B, why are you crying?"

She had gotten careless. She hadn't even locked the door before changing. What if Veerji had just walked in.

Geet "Rajji you game for a bicycle?"

Is Maan playing Geet and Arif here? I am one of those people who gets scared of too much happiness... can you tell😊..
The whole description about the writer and also the game of chess touched a spot in me. You are so wise with your words Sheesh. Every nuance of this game whether you are in jeopardy or moving forward always revolves arounds the King and each of us have to be the kings of our destiny...
