Part 53

The look on Arjuns face resembled an owl in the jungle, at night. His eyes wide and impassive and his face blank. One after the other, millions of thoughts and billions of questions invaded his mind. But none of them managed to come on his lips.

The silence disturbed Arohi. Arjun had always been a man of few words, not speaking much than he had to. Even after meeting Arohi, Arjun had started talking a lot, but it was still less by Arohis standards. But his quiet reaction today, was making Arohi restless. She wanted to explain everything to Arjun but did not know where to start. She was hoping it will be a two way conversation but looked like Arjun was too perplexed to question her or he was just keeping the ball in her court. No matter what, Arohi had to explain now and if she had to do it using her own judgement then so be it.

Arohi took a step towards Arjun. Neither did he move away, nor did he react.

"Arjun… mein ye sab tumse chupaake nahi rakhna chahti thi. Pehle toh mein tumhe kuch bata nahi saki kyuki tab hum ek saath nahi they, aur mujhe bhi kuch khaas pata nahi tha. Fir jab tum mujhe ghar le aaye tab, maine zaroori nahi samjha… and I was too busy being happy to be back with you. Fir Karan ne mujhe mana kiya tha ye sochke ki Natasha ko shak ho gaya toh tumhari jaan ko aur khatra hosakta hai. Lekin maine socha tha ki agar tum mujhse sawal karoge to mein tumhe sab sach bata dungi."

Arohis words had no effect on Arjun… she could make that out. Or maybe he was not giving out any emotions on purpose. Arohi started panicking as her anxiety increased. She took another step towards Arjun.

"Arjun… mein sachme tumhe batana chahti thi. Lekin fir… tumne bhi mujhse kuch nahi poocha… aur fir… itna sab kuch hogaya ki… tumhe batane ka… samjhane ka time hi nahi mila."

Arjun slightly clenched his teeth. He did not want to hear any explainations now. All he wanted was the complete truth. He had not questioned her as a symbol of his trust for her. Arohi noticed the darkening of his eyes and she spoke hurriedly before he spit fire at her.

"Jab mein pehli baar Karan se uss restaurant mein mili thi… tumne mere liye voh gaana gaya tha…"

Arohis eyes softened and she noticed similar change in Arjuns gaze, but he caught himself and became impassive again. Arohi pursed her lips and continued.

"… aur fir… voh challenge diya tha… yaad hai?"

"Fine. Mein aajhi Karan ko haan keh dungi. Infact… next week hamari engagement bhi hojaayegi!"

Arohis words rang in Arjuns ears from that night. In her stubborn mode, his wife had taken up that challenge. But before she could fulfil it, she was back in Singhania House with him.

"Tab maine socha tha ki main Karan ko sab sach sach bata dungi aur usse engagement ka natak karungi… tumhe jalane ke liye. Lekin Karan already hum dono ko dekh chuka tha… and he figured out that I will never ever say yes to marry him."

Arjuns eyes moved to Karans. There was a silent exchange of words between the two men.

"Issliye jab mein table pe wapas aayi tab maine Karan se baat karni chahi… lekin…"

FLASHBACK

Karan straightened in his chair as he saw Arohi walk towards the table, back to normal… well almost! She sat down and gave him a small smile. Before he could say a word, she burst out "I want to talk to you!!!"

Karan stared wide eyed at Arohi.

"Dekho Karan… mein tumse shaadi nahi kar sakti. Mein toh tumse pyaar bhi nahi kar sakti. Pyaar kya, tumhari taraf dekh bhi nahi sakti. Tum mere bohat achhe dost ho aur tumhe milke mein bohat khush hoon… itne saalon ke baad tum aaye ho. Waise itne saal tum they kaha? Na phone na letter… anyway usska hamare iss date so koi rishta nahi hai. We can just be friends… kyuki mein…"

"… Arjun se pyaar karti ho…" Karan finished rest of Arohis speech.

Now it was Arohis turn to stare at him wide eyed.

"Maine tum dono ko dekha yaha… aur tumhari baatein bhi suni… wahan…"

Karans eyes darted towards the corridor and Arohi flushed. She had been thinking about Arjuns lips over there in between their argument. If she would've kissed Arjun then Karan would have seen that too.

"Its ok Arohi. Mein bhi tumse shaadi karne ke intention se nahi aaya tha. I was actually debating over this whole thing lekin tumhara aur Arjun ka pyaar dekh kar I could take my decision."

"Matlab?" Was he rejecting her? She did not intend to marry him but still Arohi Ahluwalia has not been rejected by any boy till date! Arohi train of thoughts as usual derailed from the main topic and Karans voice brought her back on track.

"Mein bhi kisi aur se pyaar karta hoon Arohi. Actually mein London mein tha kuch saal aur waha meri mulaqat Emily se hui… Emily Johnson. We fell in love and I had proposed her too. Lekin mom dad jab London aaye they and they came to know about me and Emily, they refused point blank. Unhe ek typical Hindustani bahu chahiye thi… not some gori mem! I tried to make them understand and when they were adamant, I fought with them but then… things changed. Mein mom dad aur meri khushi ke beech mein choose nahi kar paya… aur maine Emily ka dil tod diya."

Arohi could make out that Karan was sharing something very personal… probably for the very first time with someone. She could relate to his pain when he spoke about choosing between your family and your love. Arohi had already passed through such tests in her life. She kept her hand on Karans, on the table, encouraging him to go on.

"Uss din ke baad mein kabi thik se so nahi paaya… Her heartbroken look kept haunting me. Mein yaha Chandigarh kaam se aaya tha, lekin actually I was running away from myself. Jab mom dad ne tumse shaadi ka proposal mere saamne rakha tab mein ek pal ke liye confuse ho gaya. We have always been good friends, even though the past few years we have not been in touch. So I thought that maybe it was meant to be… that I get married to a person who will understand me… not to someone whom I love… with all my heart."

Men are so stupid! Arohi shook her head at Karans weakness. She did not blame him completely because it is not easy to stand against ones family… but then when it comes to making a choice, you make one and also stand by it… come what may! But if she had helped Karan make this choice, then she was happy for her friend. Karans fingers curled around hers and he smiled.

"Jab maine tumhe aur Arjun ko dekha… tumhara pyaar… tumhara ek doosre ke liye junoon dekha… toh I was stunned! It looked like you guys were fighting but the pure love between you two is easily visible. Koi andha hi hoga jo tum dono ke pyaar ko naa dekh paaye… And that is when I cursed myself! If you guys… with so many problems can make it work then so can I… for me its just that Emily is a British girl. But you… tum toh ek aise insaan se pyaar karti ho aur shaadi kar chuki ho, jo tumhare apnon ki nazron mein ek gangster hain. Tum! Jo ek police waalon ki family ko belong karti ho…"

Arohi grinned. It had always stumped everyone… even Arjun Arohi themselves that how did they… of all the people on this earth… had managed to fall in love!!!

Arohi suddenly realised something and her smile slipped.

"Karan… tumhe kaise pata ki Arjun ek gangster hai???"

FLASHBACK ENDS

"… Aur tab mujhe Karan ne apne kaam aur mission ke baare mein bataya. Actually voh batana nahi chahta tha, because it's a classified case, but he had taken your name and… maine usski bohat jaan khaayi thi to tell me! But then the connection between you and Venetia… or Natasha was unknown, only that she works wih you. Karan had just done his research before coming here and that's how he knew about you."

Karan loves another woman! That had been the main focus of Arjuns attention. He had felt the tension leave his body at this revelation. Arjun had held himself tight and still, like and arrow pulled back in a bow, about to be released. Now suddenly the string had snapped and the tension was gone. It was like Arjun was carrying a huge heavy burden on his shoulders these past few days and that dead weight on his shoulders had suddenly disappeared.

Arohi could see the rage vanish from every feature on Arjuns face. His face was still impassive but much more relaxed. She left a sigh of relief… atleast Arjun was in a position to understand and accept her explaination now.

"Karan ke parents nahi jaante that he works for the FBI. So he could not give them a reason for staying back in Chandigarh for such a long period of time. That's why he told them that he will think about the marriage proposal after I get my divorce. Also, till then we will get to know each other, before we get married. They bought it and he could stay back here."

Arjun cocked an eyebrow and looked at a sheepishly looking Karan.

"Dude… I had no intentions for Arohi other than friendship… trust me. This was just a reason I gave my parents. And so I kept meeting her frequently."

Arohi smiled slightly seeing her possessive husband. All she wanted to do right now, was to throw herself in his arms and kiss him for loving her so much. But she had to finish confessing everything and ask for his forgiveness before anything else. Arjun loved and trusted her unconditionally… he had proved it… and he deserved to know the complete truth.

"Jab tumne mujhe Natasha ke baare mein bataya tab maine voh baat Karan ko batayi. And that's when he told me not to tell you about his actual mission because it might prove to be dangerous for you. Natasha tumhare office mein hai… tum roz usse milte ho… voh kuch bhi kar sakti thi. She is known for her sadist thinking and cruel nature. She was waiting for something to happen, after which she would… complete her task and return to london. And Karan needed time to find out what that 'something' was. So I gave him that time. And I can never take any chances when it comes to your safety. Isliye maine tumhe kuch nahi bataya."

Arohi swallowed hard when she was reminded of the 'task' that Natasha had to fulfil. If she even touched as much as a hair on Arjuns head, that woman will be dead meat! International criminal or not… Arohi will slice her up in pieces if she even looked at her Arjun!

"Issiliye tumne Karan ko party mein bulaya... kyuki Natasha bhi aane waali thi."

The words uttered by Arjun after such a long silence sounded like music to Arohis ears. Her husband had started putting two and two together.

"The chandelier accident was a set up by her. Just to scare you." Arjun looked at Karan who started explaining further. "It was meant for you… not Arohi. Natasha believes in playing with her target before she goes for the kill. But since she has seen your reaction when Arohi was in danger, there was a possibility that she will use her to torture you. That's the reason why I had taken up to keeping a watch on Arohi personally. You already had yourself to protect from that woman."

Arjun felt ten times the amount of gratitude towards Karan that he had felt when Karan had saved Arohis life. And as a gesture, he smiled… directly at the undercover agent.

Arohis eyes lit up when she saw Arjun smile. But she was confused when it dimmed as his eyes landed on her.

"Aur tum kaha jaa rahi ho?"

"Tumhe kya laga! Tum Arjun Singhania ki wife ko bhagaane ka plan banaaoge aur mein tum dono ko apna aashirvad deke bhejunga???

Now Arohi realised why his smiles were not for her yet. She had almost forgotten that he had overheard their conversation.

"Kahin nahi. Actually mujhe aise lagta hai ki jis cheez ka natasha wait karrahi hai… usska Mikhail aur Gauri se koi relation hai. I have this bad feeling about it. I spoke to Simi again today and what she told me was very disturbing. Gauri has started getting nightmares. Pichle 2-3 raaton se voh thik se so bhi nai paayi hai aur naa voh kuch bata rahi hai. Karan suggested that before Mikhail decides to fulfil his twisted plans for her, we will send Gauri out of the country. So Karan is arranging for all the tickets and I will take Gauri to him. Mein sirf Gauri ko Karan tak pohachaungi. Mein kahi nahi jaarahi hu."

Arohi assured Arjun again so that it sinks in his thick head. His tone when he asked 'tum kahan jaa rahi ho?' was not only angry but also accusing one… as if she had planned to leave him.

"Achha? Toh tumhe aisa kyu laga ki mein tumhe rokunga???"

"Voh… Karan ko laga ki you may not want me to get involved in all this as it is too dangerous. Also, Gauri is my childhood friend. She has done a lot of horrible things but still, now that shes in trouble, I wont be able to stand back and watch. Lekin mein tumhare Gauri ke liye feelings achhi tarah se jaanti hu. So you maynot approve of the risk I take for her. But I know that once you see how much important it is for me, you wont stop me."

Arohi replied smiling. She loved to flaunt how much Arjun loved her and cared for her. But right now, Arjun just stared at her and then looked at Karan and held out his hand.

"Thank you Karan… for all your help. And for looking out for Arohi. You really are a good friend."

Karan stepped ahead smiling and grabbed Arjuns hand. The two men pumped their joined hands and Arohi watched, realising that Arjun had not acknowledged her confession at all in this.

"Arjun… aaj ghar jaane ke baad mein tumhe sab sach batane wali thi…"

Arjun left Karans hand, removed his phone from his pocket and dialled a number completely ignoring Arohi.

"Love… haan mil gayi. Nahi voh car ke paas aayi thi… kuch bhul gayi thi gaadi mein voh lene… Achha? Kya kaha doctor ne? Ok good. Hum abhi aarahe hain. Bye."

Arohi watched confused as she saw Arjun go about as if she was not there in front of him.

"Humey andar jaana hoga Karan. I will call you tomorrow and update you about whatever information I have. Thank you again for all your help."

Both of them smiled at each other. Arjun threw a casual 'lets go' at Arohi and turned around towards the hospital.

Two hours later…

Arohi sat on the couch of the living room in Ahluwalia Ashiaana with a cup of tea in her hands. Priti chachi was busy serving tea and her mother was giving out biscuits and parathas. Everyone was discussing their relief over finally having got daddu back home from the hospital and how they all had spend the past months worrying. Arohi looked around trying to sink in the feeling of being back in her house again… back with her family… but she couldn't.

Her mind was still hung up two hours back…

… when she and Arjun had gone back to the hospital after he spoke to bua. Arjun had marched steadily towards the ICU, not bothering to check whether Arohi was able to keep up pace with him or not. She could feel the anger in his body when he realised that Arohi had kept him in the dark. She had tried to srpint along, to keep with his long strides and catch his eye but Arjun stubbornly stared ahead. She had not missed Karans hidden smile, when Arjun had neglected her and cut her off, displaying his annoyance at her so blatantly. She knew that she had to manao her roothe piya… but looking at him right now it felt as if she had a lot of work cut out for her.

When the doctor gave permission to send daddu home, Arohis mother had requested Arjun to send Arohi home for two days since it was holi two days later. Also Bauji will be happy to have his entire family around him. The offer was extended to Arjun too but he had refused since he didn't like playing holi. Arohi had started to refuse, saying that she would come home in the morning but Arjun had stumped her. He again cut her off, almost ordering her to stay in her own maika for however long it was required. Taking everyones leave, Arjun had started texting in his phone and walked towards the exit.

She did not want to go to her house… she wanted to be with Arjun right now. To talk to him, to manao him… to make him forgive her… to ask what he was thinking. But he had not even spared her a glance before he left.

The image of Arjuns back, moving away from her stayed in her mind and eyes… refusing to allow her to concentrate on anything else.

"Arohi apni poori family ko miss karti hai. Lekin sabse jyaada, wo ek ehsaas… ek feeling ko miss karti hai. Apni family ke beech hone ki feeling ko miss karti hai."

Arjuns words from her wedding function had stunned her and her entire family. And he had been absolutely right back then. But then, why was she missing something even though she was surrounded by her loved ones?

"Aur mein Arohi ko ye batana chahta hu ki, mere saath, usse kabhi ye feeling nahi hogi ki woh apnon ke saath nahi hai."

She had never felt so lonely in her life with her entire family around… And that was because Arohi definition of 'her family' had altered.

It no longer meant these people… who were sitting around her right now…

But her family now, was that one man, without whom she felt alone… even when she was surrounded by a crowd of doting relatives.

Kya Arohi apne roothe piya ko mana paayegi? aur kaise??? jaanne ke liye intezaar kijiye... next 'hot' update ka 😉 😆
