Geet:
"How can you do this when we have spent so much time and effort preparing for it?"
The girl with slant eyes and porcelain white bony skin was speaking with what Geet could now truly define as 'force of character'.
"But you don't have to be elected to help other students now, do you?" spoke the white haired babu clerk wearing his customary goggle eyed specs.
The girl took purposeful steps forward almost beyond the partitioning glass "And then what would I get out of it? Zilch that's what. I want to campaign, I want to sway the votes towards me. I want to feel democracy in my heart. How can I be a leader of tomorrow if I don't start today? I want to make all the mistakes now so I am in serious reckoning."
The babu smirked "Baby I have been sitting here for the last twenty five years. This autonomous university gives me a salary which increases at a stable rate. Of all the students that have been elected in front of me, not one of them have joined politics. They have only fattened their coffers or curriculum vitae. Banging my desk will not change facts nor do I take all these decisions. Unions are a thing of the past and that has to reflect in the college policies."
Geet "May I say something Sir?"
The girl looked at Geet irritated for the nice interruption "Who are you? If you want to speak to Mahesh babu await your turn. I was here first."
Geet "You must be Annie. Hello I am Geet Handa. I want to add to whatever you spoke just now."
Annie showed signs of recognition "Oh my God! You are like a celebrity in my class. Your column is such a rage that I still remember the anecdotes from it and laugh like crazy. Your spoof on Mahesh babu was the best article."
The clerk straightened his specs and throat "Wait a second. A spoof on me? Who gave you permission to write about office staff? College newsletter should contain things from outside the college."
Annie gave a sarcastic "We all read the newspaper Sir. What we need to know is things around us that are hidden from us and can be better. Geet, I need your help with my campaigning. Would you be willing? I would never ask you to be biased of course. I would just like you to report what you see."
Geet smiled wanly "I quit college and that is why I am here. Apparently there is this whole huge procedure if I have to take a hiatus and the fees are non-refundable though the year has barely started."
Annie pointed an exaggerated hand at Geet and looked at Mahesh babu "See? This is why we need a union, to champion the cause of students. Poor girl cannot even join another college now without all the university brouhaha."
Mahesh babu gave a filtered smile as if he were posing for a hidden camera "Anwesha Khurana, for the last time I am telling you. This is the last year for the union and it is going to be dissolved. I know you have started throwing your clout about to get all attention but those days are passe now. We want to make professionals out of students and that will never happen with a strike every alternate day to suit the union needs and budget."
Geet and Annie came out still mucking about in their own private dissatisfactions.
Annie "Cannot believe these bozos man. Do you know I stayed in that blasted haunted hostel all these months just to reach out to everybody staying there? I have been assisting my ass off for free until I could feel frostbite, for that Hariprasad. Now I get this, Union Dissolved."
Annie's head was still shaking and her wispy lustrous straight as an arrow hair acquired a personality of their own. Annie was not conventionally beautiful but she did possess an arresting charm.
Geet smiled "Well the office has its own charm and me going to miss Mahesh babu. He was such a darling and he always gave me leeway. At one time I was past the due date for submitting an exam form. But he managed to sneak in my form just before the guarded van left for the university office."
Annie nodded sadly "This is so bad you know. When you work so hard for something and it just slips through your fingers after all the hard work."
Geet looked at the sister Khurana, the lone female scion of the Khurana empire, all but throwing her hands up in the air at having lost a precious toy which was the student secretary's office.
Strange how things turned out that Geet had to find a bill for a bouquet of roses to be sent to her own college on the day earmarked as 'Annie's birthday' on Sir's reminder log.
Rightfully Geet's curiosity had been piqued and she had geared herself up mentally to visit her college to round up the formalities that she ought to have completed by now anyhow. She chose a ghost period after lunch to make her entry. She had to just make a few polite enquiries to find out that Annie Khurana was a first year student all set to blitzkrieg her way into the limelight. The then current location of target: Mahesh Babu's desk.
On a side note it was totally understandable for Geet to store a close one's birthday as a reminder in every possible place. One can only trust a human memory so much.
It all made sense once more. The flyer on the notice board, the passes to the party in Hariprasad's possession. Geet contemplated whether she ought to talk to Annie about KC but decided against it. It felt kind of strange mixing the two worlds. It would be her own little secret to keep from everyone else.
Geet "So Annie what are your plans now that the union thing became a frostbite bummer?"
Annie sat on the cold bench sipping a cola "I don't know, I guess I have to make plans for an internship somewhere. I had so much riding on this. Anyway so what is your plan, switching colleges? Pretty late I would think and which college would take you now anyhow?"
Annie spoke with a lot of 'any's. In fact Geet's entire recent past could well fit into an 'any'.
Geet "I am working now as a secretary."
Geet hoped Annie wouldn't ask where. She wasn't ready to talk about KC with a first year, hopeful, over zealous, fresh off the boards student yet. Annie was interrupted with a phone call and Geet mouthed a bye and left quietly.
She let the sharp warm air from the effervescent eucalyptus trees sweep through her before leaving the gates without as much as a backward glance.
"I think prophecies are for the past." Geet said as the rook moved up a couple of notches. Why did all chess characters possess such a vain starched look? Animated chess, anyone? Apparenly only Geet was mentally raising a hand of interest. The rook still looked as bored as ever.
Maan gave a thoughtful "How do you mean? Prophecy is a prediction for the future, is it not?"
Geet nodded "Yes but they also say 'History repeats itself'."
Maan arched his well formed brows. How could they be so perfect? Her brows were as thin as a bean stalk.
Geet "When someone says they are predicting for the future and writing tall claims about what is going to happen, they are actually projecting their past. How can they write something that they do not know or cannot imagine within the parameters of what they know?"
Maan frowned "I wouldn't know for sure. I am not exactly a soothsayer."
Geet "Speaking of which even astrology is bit of a stretch. They look at the position of the stars to predict a persons future. But those stars as they appear now are what they actually looked like many years ago. Light takes so much time to travel from those stars to the earth right?"
Maan "Hmm you have been reading a lot of Carl Sagan I figure. I would be glad if I could make sense of the past and carry a hope for the future. Why are we talking in enigmas again?"
Geet gulped uncomfortably "You wouldn't laugh at me if I told you right?"
Maan caught on a shimmer from the pervading light in the room "My lioness, I know you are going to surprise me. So might as well brace myself."
Geet "I thought you liked surprises."
Maan "Add a 'ing' at the end. I like surpris'ing' people. But you are a pretty Barbie out of a Pandora's box."
The word 'pretty' noted and squirreled away as a pick me upper on a low day.
Geet "I think my writing haunts me. Not from the past but from the future."
Maan was righteously dumbfounded "Come again? Those are all words I know but the sentence formation does not make sense."
Geet carried on treading egg shells in her brain "I write something and it becomes true in a sort of twisted way. It sometimes leaves me gasping at straws. I cannot delve into it too much or I will go crazy. Some days I fear I will start writing on the walls of my room. That is not normal, right?"
Maan shook his open mouth "Geet would you mind if I ask you if you do drugs?"
It was Geet's turn to open her mouth wide open now.
Maan "Not that I would mind or hold it against you. I am sure it feels great and all that. But don't you think you are taking it too far? You need some rehab as soon as possible."
Geet exclaimed "I am not getting into rehab. I mean I don't need it. I am not a crack pot! I am being serious."
Maan sighed "Geet, may be you are too much into your writing and hence you are losing perspective. I am not asking you to take it easy for I don't know what it involves but if…"
Geet "Is it strange that I absolutely abhor Arif now because he does not take me seriously? It is his publishing house and he has an option to read my work or not. But I feel like he is…"
She found herself breathless. She grabbed and washed down the bottle of water which seemed to have appeared in her hand.
Maan "So Arif did not like your work and that is leading to all this fantastic theories of yours. If you ask me continue what you are doing."
Geet pinched herself in the eye with her eyelids "Sorry what? I should go down this road you are saying?"
Maan added emphatically "I believe so yes. You are writing something that is beyond your realm of present thinking and yet it comes from your meager experience. So much so that you feel it is your future. Is that correct understanding?"
She nodded meekly.
Maan "Then continue and see where it goes. Do not stop natural instinct when it overpowers you. It is who you truly are. Just let it wash over you and think it is your form of meditation. This is all I can say about it. I cannot help you more for I do not know more."
She was contemplating about telling him about meeting Annie. Why was she over thinking all of it though? She felt a vague fear that she would poison Annie's life with her own negativity. Geet would come out cutting a sorry figure with her pathetic life that the brother and sister would discuss over a cordial dinner. Geet's every fiber revolted at that thought. She was happy being a 'celebrity' in Annie's eyes for now.
Her primal fear was thus: could a person who was gullible and not so street smart as her, ever become a good writer? If she were smart she would have convinced Arif to look at her work now, wouldn't she.
Geet "I don't know whether I like Arif though. Something makes me not want to trust him."
Maan went all broody and she loved that look on his face. But he did not enquire for it further.
Geet "Don't you consider my views on somebody important?"
Maan looked faraway "It is not that. Sometimes one is not ready to listen. Right now I am not ready to listen to things about him. How does it matter anyway? He is not my girlfriend now, is he?"
She nodded but added in a low non-threatening voice "For a person who relies on instinct you do not trust it when it does not suit you?"
She could feel his eyes piercing hers and she was up to the challenge. Her heart constricted and she saw his fingers brush his nose. He wasn't in the mood for any of his usual wisecracks apparently. She had herself put him into a thoughtful mood. She could now catch the glimpse of the real Maan. His eyes breathing red fire, he like the Alaric's live tomb of emotions.
Maan "I have known him longer than you and I am not looking at him as a boss. So I think my instinct would be better served in judging him."
Geet smirked "Just like you had known Tara?"
His hand twitched into a jerk and one of the chess pieces which was on the board in its rightful place was knocked out of the table out of turn. Touche, are we?
She grit her teeth and clenched her fists. She picked up the piece down on the carpet and placed it back. He did not like mercy. So she wouldn't be so obliging either. She stared at his seriously serious face and replied as if she were sucking a sugary sponge "I am not trying to make you angry. Just trying to understand you as a person. As a friend I have that much 'leeway' right?"
She looked at her finger nails all chipped mostly due to malnutrition and less personal grooming. She had to get her act together before she disintegrated into a nothingness. She was just being a dunce when others around her had force of character in abundance.
She looked up expecting him to be in his Maanstein avatar. Instead she was bowled over by the broad grin on his face; 'Hey Babaji, save me from this man!'
