10 years of Drishyam
After looking into the emergency, he was quite happy that the baby was stable. The little baby's parents thanked him. When he retired in his cabin, Aman walked in.
"Why didn't you tell me where you were going?" Aman demanded.
"If I did, you would have followed me," he replied. "Like that pug in the Hutch advertisement," he couldn't help adding.
"Sense of humour," he noted. "When did you acquire this? I thought you were angry when you left."
It was true. He was angry. Somehow the little chat with Khushi did some wonders and erased his anger.
"I was. But situations changed."
"Where were you?"
He lifted the coke can and said, "Shopping."
The twinkle in his eyes made Aman wonder whether it was the whole truth. He then realized that it had to do something with Khushi. But when he called her, she hadn't mentioned Arnav.
"Does your little shopping have something to do with a chef by the name Khushi?"
Arnav shrugged his shoulders and said, "Maybe."
Aman sat on one of the two chairs and said, "Arnav, you should listen to them."
"Please, don't spoil my mood. Khushi has gone for work and I can't even meet her to change my mood."
He raised his hands in acceptance.
"Fine. We'll talk about it when you want to."
"That's like my best buddy," he said and finished the drink. "Are you free now?"
"Why?"
"I have to check on a couple of kids. I am free for the next two hours. How about we go home and spend some time with the kids?"
He thought over his schedule and said, "I have to finish the paper work for tomorrow's surgery. That's it."
"Kitni der lagega?" [How long will it take?]
"I'll finish it in the evening."
"Okay, then wait in your cabin. I'll finish with the two kids and meet you there."
Aman accepted and went to his room while Arnav went to the general ward to check the two kids.
Adithya and Ankit crossed their arms and turned in the opposite direction when they saw Aman and Arnav. The two doctors knew that they had to do some damage control for not playing with the kids the previous night. Anjali and Payal stood behind the kids in a similar stance with a glare on their faces.
Aman and Arnav looked at each other.
"What should we do now?" Arnav whispered in Aman's ears.
"If I knew, I wouldn't be standing here," he whispered back. "I would be playing with them."
"Di, aap office nahi gaye?" Aman asked her.
"Aaj Sunday hai, Aman," Anjali replied in a stern voice.
"Sunday? We didn't even know it, did we, Arnav?"
The glare on both the women's faces intensified.
"You are not helping, buddy," Arnav told Aman.
"You have any plans?"
Arnav smiled. "Arnav Singh Raizada always has a backup plan."
He pulled two thin rectangular gift wrapped boxes from his laptop bag and gave it to Adithya and Ankit.
"What is it, mamu?" Adithya asked him.
"Open it and see."
Both the kids opened the gift wrappers and found two new game cds for their play station.
Aditya hugged Arnav and said, "You are the best, mamu."
"Haan, bade pa. You are the best."
Anjali and Shyam's six year old daughter, Akshara, ran down the stairs and came to Arnav.
"Mamu, mere liye?" [Mamu, for me?]
"Akshu ke liye bhi hai." [There is one for Akshu, too.]
"Sachi?" [Really?]
"Muchi." [Really?]
He took out another box from his bag. This box was bigger than the ones he had given the two boys.
"Can I open it, mamu?"
"Of course, Akshu can open it."
She opened the gift wrapper slowly and looked at the gift Arnav had given her. It was Ken, Barbie's boyfriend.
"Ken," she exclaimed in happiness. "For my Barbie princess."
She kissed Arnav's cheek and said, "Thank you, mamu."
When the three kids ran off to experiment with their new gifts, Arnav turned his attention to his sister and sister-in-law.
"When did you two come home last night?" Anjali asked her.
"Eleven thirty, twelve?" Aman asked Arnav.
He nodded.
Anjali said, "Jhoot math bholo, Aman. Tum bhi, chote. [Don't lie, Aman. You too, chote.] Hari Prakash told us that you came home at quarter past one."
"What were you doing till then?" Payal asked them.
"Kuch nahi, bhabi," Aman said. "Just spending some time together."
"Do you think..."
Shyam interrupted his wife and asked, "Why are you two after both my saale's?" He winked at Aman and Arnav and said, "They might have spent some time in the pub or in the disco theque."
"Jiju, not fair," Arnav winced. "You are supposed to be helping us."
"You know what, chote?" Anjali asked him. "It was better when you were with Lavanya. You used to come home early. Now, see what is happening. Is one fifteen a time to come home?"
"Don't worry, di," Aman said. "Nothing happened."
"Why are you upset over a small thing, di?" Arnav asked her.
Before Anjali could answer, Shyam said, "Because she and Payal made your favourite dish and were waiting for you."
Arnav and Aman apologized.
"By the way, what were you really doing?" Shyam asked them.
"Nothing, jiju," Arnav replied.
Aman whistled the tune of the song 'Pehla pehla pyaar hai' and went to the dining table.
"I am going to kill you, Aman," Arnav muttered under his breath.
"You said something, Arnav?" Shyam asked.
"I didn't say anything."
Shyam nodded and followed Aman to the dining table.
Arnav didn't want the same situation to be repeated again. He told his family that he would be late that night. To his utter luck, they didn't ask him why he would be late.
Arnav waited for Khushi in the lobby. Aman didn't join him as he had a surgery scheduled early the next morning.
Khushi came out at about five minutes before twelve. She noticed Arnav sitting with a laptop in the reception area.
"Hi!" she greeted him.
He looked up from the laptop and greeted her. "Hi...!"
"You didn't have to come."
"I didn't have to," he accepted. "I wanted to."
She didn't know what to say. She played with her dupatta.
"Ghar chalein?" he asked as if he was asking his wife. [Shall we go home?]
She knew that denying would be of no. So she said, "Okay."
She looked around and searched for Aman.
Arnav noticed it and said, "Aman has an operation scheduled for tomorrow. So, he went to catch some sleep."
They walked outside the restaurant and stopped near the entrance.
He pointed to his car and asked, "Car or walk?"
She thought over it. If she said walk, then he would have to return all the way to the restaurant alone and the chances of getting a taxi was near to nil. She made up her mind and decided to choose car.
"Your car is fine," she told him.
He had seen her deep in her thoughts and he knew that she was thinking about him.
"I am fine with walk too," he told her. "Don't worry about me. I can return alone."
"It's alright. Car is okay with me."
He took her to his car and opened the door for her. Like a true gentleman, he waited until she got in and then closed the door.
"Did you reach on time for the emergency call?" Khushi asked him when they were on their way to her apartment.
He nodded. "I was there in time. The baby is fine now."
Arnav looked at Khushi once in a while when she wasn't noticing. That was when he noticed her reaction change into a child like expression. He searched for the reason and he found a man with a kulfi cart.
"Do you like ice creams?" he asked her.
"I love them."
He made a U-turn and stopped near the kulfi man. Khushi looked at Arnav in confusion.
"Ice cream," he said and pointed to the cart. When she hesitated, he said, "Get down."
She opened the door and ran to the man. Arnav locked the car and followed her.
"Bhaiya, dho kulfi dijiye," she told the man. [Bhaiya, give two kulfis.]
"Nahi. Sirf ek dho." [No. Give only one.]
"Aap ko nahi chaiye?" she asked him. [You don't want?]
"Main diabetic hoon. [I am diabetic.] I should not eat ice cream," he explained.
"Diabetic?"
He nodded.
"Then why did you stop?"
He gave her a genuine smile and took the kulfi from the man. He gave it to her and said, "Here you go."
"You stopped here for me?" she asked in shock mixed with confusion.
His reply was the same stunning smile.
She took the ice cream from him and said, "Thanks."
When he was about to pay the man, she stopped him.
"I'll pay."
"What's there in this?" he asked. "Consider it as my treat."
"Treat? For what?"
"For the wonderful you served us last night."
"That was my job. Actually I should be giving you a treat for waiting for me until midnight."
"Okay. Give me a treat later."
He paid the man and the man went away.
Arnav watched her eat the ice cream. She enjoyed it as if it was the last kulfi in the whole world. They got into the car and resumed their journey. He walked her to her apartment but refused to go inside as it was very late.
"You work tomorrow?" he asked her.
"Yes, but not till eleven thirty. My shift will be over early."
"Do you know the time?"
She shook her head. "I will know about it tomorrow."
"I'll call you tomorrow. Tell me the time."
"Listen, thank you for the lift. But there is no need."
He refused to listen to her NO's.
"Don't forget to tell me the time."
At last, Khushi accepted as she didn't have any other choice.
