Hey sweeties,

Next update is up.

Lots of Love!! 🤗

Chap 25

Geet:

She was plainly trying not to look at the incandescent man sitting in front of her. It was hard work, seeing him sign on the dotted line with elegant painter like strokes. His signature was indecipherable. Men who were complex conundrums often signed in that manner.

Geet "I bet you 100 bucks I can forge your hieroglyphic signature."

Maan looked up still with his super serious supposed to be angry expression. Who was he kidding?

Geet "I already said I am sorry three times. Sir is not in office else I would have told him too. What am I supposed to do now?"

He was still shuffling some papers and she began tapping her nails on the glass impatiently. He tried to frown the disturbance away but her stubborn streak did not relent.

Geet "Fine! I will not repeat the mistake again. I did not mean to insult him on purpose. I was just trying to understand where my place was, since I am paid for being Sir's maid cum mouthpiece."

Ok petty potshots were not helping the cause any. He looked up and signaled her to look at the piece of paper under the glass sheet in front of her. She saw something there that gave her a rude shock. It said Dev became a graduate in Bachelor of Science exactly three years before, wait what! From the same college as her?

Maan leaned forward "I hope that explains some things for you."

She kept staring at the certificate and the golden circa and college plus university emblem in the corner. She would never have that in the near future. Oddly though she did not feel that sad about it, it was never meant to be.

Maan "Why I hired you of all people and why I insisted on you being his secretary; it takes two to tango. You both haunted the same place at different points in time, he does not know it yet that you studied from the college that he has a love hate relationship with. Do not ask me why it matters, some things are known by instinct. I believe if there is anyone who can handle the tall order of being Dev Khurana's secretary it is you."

She wanted to smile but vague thoughts of the emblem eagle swooping in and clasping the little girl inside her were haunting her mind.

Maan "There were some girls before you, we hired them from an agency. But they were just not good enough, either they were too married or too afraid of what your role entails. Why do you think I give you so much leeway Geet lady?"

She could still not take her eyes off the certificate and what it must mean for someone to possess it and display something like it. Everyone around her took that certificate for granted but they never understood its true value and how a mere piece of glossy paper can build a personality out of a student.

Maan shook his head "It is up to you how much you want to grow or learn. You can come to your desk, do your job and go home or you can observe things around you and make your presence felt by others."

He quietly stood up and walked away to a meeting. She stared blankly outside the window. It was a day of blues and the sky seemed to agree. There was a violent dark cloud looming in the distance. She came back to her desk and went about filing the bills once more mechanically. It was end of day and she came back home exhausted for having done nothing.

She thought about what had transpired the entire day and came to a gradual realization that she had been missing a key element in her life. Something basic and yet an underlying current of commonality that everyone needed so their life made sense.

She wondered about the corridors of uncertainty in her alma mater. Dev had tread the same path and had woven the dreams by looking at the same notice boards. They had touched the same objects, looked at the same old lady with specs who had worked there forever handing out examination forms. Dev had inhaled the musty odor of the books in the same library.

She could not agree more that it made a difference. She wondered at the depth of Maan's reasoning that had come to the conclusion to group her along with a boss from the same college. It pained her heart to realize this could lead to a case of better understanding between Dev and her. Her equation with Dev now extended beyond the realm of boss to secretary condescension. Suddenly his opinion about her seemed to matter, it was a scarily inhibiting thought.

Something clicked in her mind about how she was being thrown into the same sphere of coincidences again and again. She met Maan at the book signing which Dev was supposed to attend too. She had obtained the passes to a party Dev was invited personally for. She had landed up working as his secretary. What was the common link here? She sprung up as the thunderbolt hit her. She immediately called her friend from college.

Geet "Hello Pari!"

Pari "Hey Geet! Long time no see. What you have no time for friends or what? Pata hai people are cooking up stories about you in college. They are saying you got married and all that. Just throw us all a farewell party of some sort na. To keep us all informed of what is happening properly. This…"

Geet "Sure once I get my salary I can do that. Listen, do you know Dev Khurana?"

Pari "I don't know him I think."

Geet "Pari come on tax your brain. I think you do know him somehow."

Pari "Seriously Geet, I don't know him ok."

Geet "He is the CEO of KC, does that ring a bell?"

Pari "I have heard of KC from somewhere. But…no Geet, I don't know."

Geet rubbed her forehead thinking of a way to extract information from her friend.

Geet "Ok tell me this, how did you know of the modeling assignment for the book signing I went to? Remember when you ditched me for going out with Sachin?"

Pari "Ah that! Geet sometimes you are so damned dumb. We both saw the flyer together on the notice board na."

Oh ya!

Geet "Hmm…how did you get the party passes where you managed to ditch me again?"

Pari "That! I got it in exchange for a favor I did for the student union secretary."

Geet "Our student secretary Hariprasad? What favor did you do to get it."

Pari "He wanted the use of my car for a week for some campaigning work. Anyway my old secondhand car was lying around so I just gave it to him."

Geet "I see, so you know this Hariprasad guy well?"

Pari "Nah! Not really, we are just hello hi bye bye friends."

Geet "Do you have his number? I need to speak to him about that pass."

Pari "I had it but deleted it after I got my car back. Who carries around phone numbers of losers?"

Correct, good thinking.

Geet "What is this Hariprasad anyway? Any idea where he might have received passes for an exclusive party from."

Geet could feel Pari shrugging.

Pari "Nope I have no idea where he got it from. He just told me that he had a couple of passes to spare and that he would give it to me if I gave him my car for a week. What a bummer huh, I missed the party anyway. But you went right, so that is good."

Geet sighed "Ya thanks Pari, I will catch up with you later alright."

She needed to clear the puddle of mud that her brain had now become. How had all of her activities in the recent past lead her to Dev Khurana? Maan was right, it was one coincidence too many. If she was not herself she would have suspected herself of stalking too!

Geet Frank:

Very soon Geet Frank might graduate to using a Word processor for editing. Until then please bear the ink of Geet's notions.

Love Diggers Husband (contd) :

He looked at her with a ferocious intensity that was a transference from his meditation "Why! Aren't you lovely. Who might you be?"

She gasped in shock for she was not prepared. She was not even dressed for the occasion. Her clothes were all soiled, her hair disheveled and the flowers she wore worn out. She moved her lips but no sound carried. She wanted to burrow a deep hole and bury herself in it.

She could clearly see him bloating in acute anger, she could sense a few curses were going to be hurled her way. She was standing in a lion's den and begging for alms. She opened her mouth to say something but found her tongue had gone dry. She made a motion with her hand indicating a finger skyward and fell backwards in a clueless heap. Everything went black after that until she felt a few drops of water disturbing her revere.

She woke up slowly to find a worried pair of eyes gazing at her intently. She blinked a couple of times until her nerves calmed down.

He "I am sorry, I did not mean to startle you. Did you even realize I was sitting near the tree? I had covered myself in mud to prevent insects from climbing on to me and eating me alive. I must have looked scary for a beautiful maiden. Don't you worry though, I am not a monster."

She sat up slowly with his help. He still looked a bit concerned.

He "I am Vishwamitra, once upon a time a Kshatriya but now following the Brahmin way of life. I seek the knowledge above all knowledge. I do not crave but feel the world at my fingertips."

He waited for her to begin talking. When she didn't oblige him, he began "And you are…."

She was wondering now what had happened to her power of speech. Words seemed to be stuck in her throat and odd fears of the forest grove around her were encroaching on to her eyes.

He "Did you create this beautiful garden that I see? You look like a princess to me; then pray tell me why are you dirtying your hand and clothes."

Before she could answer him she was cut off.

He "I do not want to forget my responsibility to my guest. Please sit here while I fetch some water and refreshments for you. I am sure you are tired from all the hard work."

She made a motion to get up when she heard his growling voice.

He "I said take rest. I will see to your case in a bit."

Vow he was rude and his tone demeaning. What was she expecting? He had been a king after all. Her Lord was right, once a king always a king. The man who was now walking towards the lake did not seem as easy as she had imagined he would be. May be she needed to stop imagining and work with whatever she had. Not every man was as winsome as her own Lordship. Note to self, all beings did not live up to their name.

He came back from the lake bearing some fruits and a leaf cone of water. What he had assumed away that she was a vegetarian? He had not once asked what she would have liked to eat. She looked away from the plantain leaf angrily.

He "So you are indeed a princess, for you refuse the food of the jungle. Then what may I ask are you even doing here? You seem to think it fit to barrage into my private space and begin your hobby. Don't you know that a man who is meditating must not be disturbed?"

She was puffing up by the second with his effrontery. Nobody treated Menaka like a commoner, least of all a human.

He "Oho! Her Highness has a temper too I observe. Nowadays girls are so spoilt by their fathers. They go about gardening and humming in front of grown men least caring that they are exposing themselves."

She decided she had had enough. May be this man was better off keeping his mouth shut and meditating. She got up and began hurriedly walking away when she realized she was not done with her task yet. This man was a bigger lump of ice than the Gangothri. Did he possess no worldly desires at all? She had not asked him to come out of this meditative trance. Was it her problem if he had focus issues?

He "Her Highness appears to be mute and cannot chant the Holy mantras. Hence you feel the need to indulge in petty habits like planting seeds and watching them grow."

She turned back and was about to give a full lecture to the man. In her mind it was something to this effect.

'You silly bookworm King, the world does not exist in the Papyrus or the Bow or the Sword or the Jungle or the Kingdom or on the Elephant or in the udder of the Holy Cow. Look beyond and actually experience the world as it comes. Perhaps then you would understand the people around you and learn to value their feelings. It would help you get out of your social ineptitude.'

But Menaka did not feel the need to prove herself before this man. She began walking away head held high when she saw an arrow swishing by and landing at her feet.

He "Not so easy princess. Come back here and tell me who you are. What do you take me for?"

Geet:

She dropped her pen and decided to pay an impromptu visit to Arif's office where it all began.

She was standing now before the nondescript building that housed the humble office of Hussain publishing and Co. It seemed like a lifetime ago when she had visited there previously. There had been a couple of other girls but she had been selected without so much as a screen test. Not every model wants to play a prostitute at a book signing. It was a career killer, the tall fellow candidate/model had told her.

But Geet had gone ahead anyway and had ended up meeting Maan.

"Smiling to yourself again? You never change Geet."

Geet was still smiling "Hello Arif, may I come in?"

Arif ushered her into his cabin where they sat like old friends. Tea was summoned and it came in piping hot.

Geet "How long have you known Maan?"

Arif was reverent when he took the man's name "Maan has known me for a couple of years now. I have admired him from afar for a lot many years."

Geet "How do you know him?"

Arif "I used to work as a journalist before and used to cover things about city skyline, newest architectural trends, housing finances etc. I met Maan by chance at a party I went to and it sort of grew from there. We used to talk and discuss about various things and he used to give me valuable inputs. I used to help him by giving KC good reviews in my articles. After a few years the job went stale on me. I decided to become a writer and then wrote down a novel in my spare time. I found it extremely hard to find a publisher to get myself bound and out. Maan then inspired me to get into publishing myself. This way I get to help budding writers as well as loads of free time to write. I am my own boss you see."

Geet "And Dev?"

Arif "I don't really know him all that well. Just that he heads KC and is Maan's brother. Dev does not appear to be all that social."

Geet smiled "That is a long story. I have written a couple of chapters in a story I have started. I am only writing it for sampling so you can give me pointers on how to write, edit etc. I am…."

Arif frowned "Geet I told you I don't need a writer per say. I need someone to get me stories by looking around. I want to look at manuscripts and big fat references. I have a team of writers here already."

Geet sighed "I know Arif, but I don't really know what sells or where I need to search if you know what I mean?"

Arif "Look Geet, I do not have time to sit and read stories here. I will just catch a glimpse and pass it along to a writer who will sort through it all and give me a final draft."

Geet "But how will I know whatever I am researching is going to be worth the effort? I can bring you a fat manuscript or whatever and you can throw it back at me right? I will not get anything until my story is picked."

Arif nodded "Yes that is sort of the deal. If I don't like it you can take it to someone else if you wish. Look I am kind of new and want to dabble in various areas to get things up and running. Sorry but that is all I can promise as of now. If you want to become a writer yourself then I need something beyond what you have to offer. You are not experienced enough to become a professional writer. I have seen some of these so called new age books in the market. Written by amateurs and passed on by piecemeal publishers in the name of new age writing. They think of themselves as Shakespeare. I am sorry but I want to support quality rather than quantity. I want the awards and my house in the literary sections."

Geet nodded along sadly "Ok I understand although it might be a while if I have to get you a story that you can use."

Arif smiled "You have all the time in the world."

Geet "Thanks Arif. I will catch you later, bye."

Arif "Hope to see something from you soon."

She came out with more uncertainty than ever. She stopped herself in her tracks. Veerji had insisted she join KC of all places. What the!

Who was Dev Khurana? She had already lost a few hairs now to the cosmos that were hell bent on making them a team.

Intriguing question.. who gave the passes to Pari and her.. It either means something or is simply a coincidence. I have a sneaky suspicion that all is not as it appears though. Which begs the question, why would anyone want to orchestrate Geet's life in such a way? What is the gain and to whom?
Geet Frank's diary is very interesting to read. Am not able to corelate it to the real life scenario yet and am not even sure if I am meant to..
Thanks for updating Sheesh.

Did I ever mention that I love the stories within the stories? The entire concept is such a treat! To be honest though, I can't imagine how exhausting that might be at times. You're basically running a plot within a plot which has to be linked back to "the" plot.😆 Kudoos to you, Sheesh

Now to Maan, Geet, and Dev.

Dev is actually more of an enigma to me than all the other characters, and I love that. It's amusing since he is probably supposed to be a side character, so perhaps once again your secret love for Dev is shining through?😆 Anyhoot, this intricate triangle that you've woven with an apex that seems to be Dev is fascinating. The way in which Maan seems to manoeuvering Geet into some kind of understanding of his brother seems to suggest something I'm going to keep to myself for the moment. For now, I can't help but ponder upon the earlier glimpse into the brothers' interaction with each other, and how much of an influence this has on Geet's role in Maan's mind.

(I really need to pop in and comment more. I know, I know.😳) If I'm not feeling lazy, I'll eventually get around to doing a proper commentary of my observations in the distant future😆

Sheesh, terribly terribly hard days at work and still, when I log in just to read you guys, and then I see an update like this, all my fatigue simply vanishes! I mean it! 🤗 🤗 I can also well guess why this story is not the hottest item on IF 😆 and you can take that as a compliment! It is surely among the smartest I've read!

And you make me not insist that I get to read just Maaneet. Tell you what... if you haven't tried it already, why don't you just try re-telling any Indian myth separately Sheesh? As in, not on IF... just as an exercise by itself? This Vishwamitra-Menaka myth, as much as Vishwamitra screams of Maan-esqueness ☺️ 😆 , is a terribly worthwhile reading into the legend. For example, a simple query: Your Vishwamitr says that he covered himself with dirt to prevent insect from crawling and scavenging on him. Yes? Is that explanation derived or borrowed? I'm genuinely curious.

I ask coz, until now, legend says that dirt or termite hills have grown onto a tapasvi who undergoes constant penance for years together. Your reading's that the medicant sought protection from nature through the deliberate muddying... so... is it a borrowed reasoning? Or your imagined or derived one?

As for your Maaneet... they are a lovable lovable mystery as always- Maan being complex and undecipherable (the major difference here being, hey hey hey everybody loves him and he has a casual air here inspite of everybody being in awe of him- a complete antithesis to the original Maan) and Geet playing detective cum secretary cum advisor cum friend cum other designations to follow down the lane... beautiful 👏 So, what's with Dev Khurana, hmmm? 🤓

Hey ! 🤗 Glad to be of service.
I just write things I fancy and if it turns out hot great else I am cool na 😎 Tehehehehe

Meri desh ki mitti me jadoo hai 😆.
Seriously though when people have pimples or other skin ailments they are advised to try mud packs like Multani mitti, herb packs etc. The reason behind that is I believe to prevent a hot bed for microbes. These packs act as natural antioxidants and coolants and stem the growth of skin infecting microbes. So my reasoning kind of grew from there. A deliberate muddying would help cover up existing wounds, clot any blood that might have oozed out, cool down body temperature and also inhibit the natural scent emanated from any hot blooded mammal. If termites need to build hills they need to believe he is part of the scenery na 😆 . Ok I will admit I have only reasoned and imagined but not researched this.
