Chapter 51
All day, Geet tried to concentrate on her work. Unfortunately the bouquet of flowers on her desk, constantly reminded her of him. She tried to spend as much time away from her desk and even the department, sitting in the canteen, hall, planning department and even the finance department beside Pinky, but eventually she had to return back to her desk...and those flowers...his flowers. She also felt quite anxious about their dinner date in the evening and she was thinking about it when Pinky interrupted her "Arre Geet, where did the flowers come from? They are beautiful...who are they from? Is there a card?"
"They are from a special friend" Meera replied winking at Pinky.
"Oh" Pinky said looking at Meera, then back towards Geet. "So Geet, you didn't tell me you had a special friend...I am hurt...I am your bestie and you didn't think to tell me?" Pinky pouted.
Geet stood up. She had enough. She had been teased all day about these flowers, and she was going to give "him" a piece of her mind.
"Pinky, sorry. They are from a friend. I can't tell you any more at the moment, so please don't ask. Excuse me" Geet said as she ran from her desk into the hallway, down the stairs and into the car park, where she closed her eyes and let out a scream. When she opened her eyes, she felt a bit better, but suddenly realised that a number of pairs of eyes were looking at her strangely. "Sorry" she mouthed, as she went to find a quiet corner of the car park. She took out her phone and dialled.
"Hello"a female voice answered. Geet looked at her phone with a puzzled expression. "Did I not ring Maan's phone? Maybe I misdialled" she thought. She disconnected the phone and re-dialled. Again, a woman answered. Tentatively Geet replied "Sorry, I was looking for Maan. Maybe I have got the wrong number"
"No. You have the correct number. I am just answering his phone. He is in the washroom at the moment" the woman replied. "Oh here he is"
Geet looked at the phone and thought "Who is this chudail? Why is she answering Maan's phone? Why is he letting her? Babaji!!" and disconnected the phone as she heard him say "Hello, Geet?"
She stood in her spot pouting. She didn't know why another woman's voice on the end of the phone disturbed her, but it did.
Her phone rang, and she looked down to see the caller ID. It was Maan. "Should I answer it? Or should I ignore him? If I ignore him, he may ring the office Babaji or worse still he may come here" she thought panicking. She answered the call with a very cool "Hello"
Maan heard something in the tone of her voice. She didn't sound like her bubbly self. "Hi Geet. Did you ring just now? Is everything okay?"
Geet tried to act unaffected, but she heard the woman's voice in the background, which set her off on a tirade. "No, I am not okay...and who is that woman? And where are you? Are you not at work? And that woman? Who is she? And why is she answering your phone? And why was she waiting for you when you are in the washroom? And another thing...ha... those flowers...you know what?... everyone is teasing me about them...even Meera...and my bestie Pinky...but what do you care? And...and...and urgh" Geet ended in frustration.
Maan smirked on the other end of the phone hearing every word that Geet said as well as every word she didn't. "So, Mrs Khurana is jealous" he thought. Rather than set his sherni off even more, he decided that he needed to calm her down.
"Geet"
Silence
"Geet are you there?"
He heard her sigh and grunt, which made him chuckle silently. "I can imagine she is pouting right now" he thought.
"OK. So let me answer your questions...who is the woman? Well she is my baby sister Annie...your nanaan. Would you like to say hello?"
Geet's eyes widened at this information. "Oh Babaji..what was I thinking?"
Then she heard the female voice again "Hello Bhabhi. I didn't know it was you when you phoned earlier. I am sorry, I didn't introduce myself on the phone, but you didn't give me a chance" Annie said politely.
Geet listened quietly and finally said shyly "Hi Annie. That's okay. I...um...vo...um...will you give Maan the phone please?"
Annie smiled at Maan and gestured to him to take the phone. She whispered in his ear "She sounds sweet bhai" before leaving him to talk with Geet.
"So, you have now talked to one of the other women in my life" Maan said. Then before she could respond, he cleared up any doubt with, "the only other ones being Daadi and yourself" before you ask.
Geet blushed silently listening to him. She didn't know why this last bit of information made her happy.
"So , coming onto your other question...I am working Geet. I am working from home. I have an office at home" he said. "And about the flowers and the teasing you are receiving. I did tell you to say they were from your husband, but you didn't like that idea... I know what to do Geet... I will come to the office and clear any doubts your friends and colleagues have. How does that sound?" Maan said, knowing he had just pushed his luck with his sherni.
Geet disconnected the call and Maan smiled at his phone. "I guess she doesn't want me to visit the office" he thought
