He played Kunal Sikand in Kahin Kisi Roz and Debu in Kasauti Zindagi Kay. Actor Yash Tonk was always TV czarina Ekta Kapoor's blue-eyed boy. After being a part of most Balaji serials however, the man is suddenly missing from the tube. Yash, who was doing three daily soaps earlier, is now lying low. After ruling the roost for a decade on TV, the actor has intentionally cut down on his small screen appearances.
He informs, "Balaji's Keser is the only serial that I'm doing. I'm consciously distancing myself from television. As of now, my mind, heart and soul are in making a career for myself in films." While the debate over whether TV actors are film-rejects persists, Yash's strong preference for cinema makes a strong case over what medium is the original choice for actors.
And the concentration on films, at the cost of TV assignments, has clearly paid off for Yash who was seen as a bumbler in the Pritish Nandy Communications' youthful enterprise Popcorn Khao Mast Ho Jao last year. The actor has been roped in to play a pivotal role in Rumi Jaffery's O God Tusi Great Ho. Other films on the anvil are Kisse Pyar Karun, Dil Sacha Chehra Jhootha and Fight Club.
Is he quitting television for good? "I won't say that," he pauses before stating: "Television is something I can always go back to, but if I don't concentrate on my films now, I don't know if I'll get another chance." Yash is certainly not ready to take any risks. The actor adds that television per say is a tougher medium: "When you're doing films, you have to adjust your dates with the lead actors. It has to be co-ordinated with their availability. Besides, the working hours on television are demanding. You have to be available 24/7. One has to make a choice, in order to do justice to both." Well, it helps if you get paid more for far less work as well.
