Part 2

"Hum Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada bol rahe hain. Ji , Shukriya'." And Khushi waited for the girl to transfer her call to Arnav's private number at AR Designs.

"Miss me?" Arnav teased.

"Nahin, matlab haaan, matlab appki yaad to hume hamesha hi satati hain. Par iss waqt hum Nanheji ke baare mein pareshaan hain."

Here goes, thought Arnav with a small sigh "Khushi, don't worry. NK is a big boy, woh apna khayal rak sakta hain."

"Nahin, aisi baat nahin hai Arnavji. Aaj kal who kaafi khoye khoye se lagte hai. Humesha vyast, par kisi ko yeh nahin pata ki kar kya rahe hain. Pahele to hume laga ki who Maya ji ke chakkar me poora waqt bita rahe hain, par kabhi kabhi unhe udhaas dekhkar hume gabrahat hoti hain" poured out Khushi, in one continuous stream of words.

"Khushi trust me! Muje abhi meeting ke liye late ho raha hain. See you in the evening" and the phone disconnected.

"Laad Governor" Khushi muttered darkly at the receiver in her hand.

It was well past ten thirty in the night when Khushi heard NK's footsteps as he made his way to his room.

"Nanheji", NK heard the tentative voice and a knock as he stepped out of the bath room a little while after his arrival.

"Gimme a minute," he called out as he hurriedly pulled on his night shirt before opening the door.

Khushi pushed past him into the room and set the tray laden with food on the desk saying"Nanheji, aap din be din bilkul man maani karte jaa rahen hain, kisi ka bilkul bhi parva nahin ..." Khushi's voice trailed to a stop as she surveyed the room.

This was not a room of a carefree young man on his vacation. The desk was laden with files, drawings, and a stack of photographs that had been stacked in neat piles and marked. NK's laptop was on and alive, its monitor blinking and flickering in an array of lights, apparently some sort of simulation was running on it replete with lights and sound effects. Everywhere she looked, she found herself staring at evidence of a man hard at work.

Khushi spun around with rounded eyes and mouth and looked at NK, her face a regular slide show of unspoken questions racing with one another in her mind.

NK sighed, partly with weariness and partly in relief. "Khushiji, I know ki aapke mann mein kaheen sawaal ugg rahen hain".

"Ugg nahin Nanheji, Utt rahen hain", corrected Khushi automatically.

"Wohi, same to same." Smiled NK, "but not tonight. Kal sham ko dinner ke baad, mein aapki har baat ka answer doonga. I promise." Said NK earnestly placing his right hand on his heart.

"Teek hai Nanheji. Aap pahele kuch Khaaleejiye aur phir sojayiye. Kaafi thake hue lag rahe hain aap", said Khushi softly, patting his arm, her eyes filled with concern.

"Arnavji, Nanheji kya kar rahen hain. Who teek to hain na? Unke kamre mein who sare files, photo aur who program jo unke computer par chal raha ta. Aur unki badalte hui mizaz; pal mein hansi mazaak to pal me gehri soch. Humme bilkul bhi nahin lagta ki Nanheji chutti mana rahe hain."

Arnav put his book down and wrapped his arms around Khushi "Kya bataya NK ne tumhe?"

"Woh to kuch bhi nahin bataye, tabi to hum ... Ek minute... " Khushi jumped and sat back on her knees, " Aaa apko pata hain! Hai na? apne hume nahin bataya?" she pouted.

" I would have If I could Khushi. Maine NK ko promise kiya tha. It's his call. Who jab share karna chahega, tab karega Khushi. I am sure who bhi sabse pahele tume se. I am sorry I can't tell you anything. Mein uska vishwaas nahin thod sakta." He ended, his eyes seeking her empathy.

"Hum samajte hain Arnavji. Waise bhi Nanheji hume sab kuch kal bataane ka vaada kiya hain. Par aap hume ye bataayiye; yeh maamla Mayaji se judi hai kya?" Questioned Khushi with concern lacing her voice.

Arnav squeezed Khushi's waist gently and replied looking into her eyes. "Yes Khushi! Don't worry. Yeh sab NK ki bhalayi ke liye hai."

Khushi opened her mouth yet again, but before she could voice her thoughts, Arnav's mouth had captured hers in a hard kiss, swallowing her words and her sigh of pleasure.

Every sane thought fled from Khushi's mind as she found herself engulfed in the flames that her Arnavji was igniting in her with his hot kisses. She moaned in response curling her fingers in his hair, as her breasts bloomed to fill his palm under his caresses. She gave herself up to the clamoring needs of her body and Arnavji's passion. Whatever Nanheji was up to will have to wait until the next day!

Much later Arnav kissed his sleeping wife's forehead lovingly as he tucked a wayward lock of her hair behind her ear. "Khushi" he whispered, "You are in for a surprise. You are going to discover an entirely new shade of your Nanhe when he answers your questions tomorrow. I have to admit, he does have a will of steel underneath his carefree banter and happy- go-lucky attitude"; he smiled proudly, closing his eyes and slipping off into a deep sleep.

Serendipity (English Translation)

Part 2

"It's me Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada. Yes please; Thank you'." And Khushi waited for the girl to transfer her call to Arnav's private number at AR Designs.

"Miss me?" Arnav teased.

"No, '. I mean Yes, I mean there is never a second during my day when I don't miss you Arnavji. But at the moment my mind is preoccupied with concerns regarding Nanheji."

Here goes, thought Arnav with a small sigh" Khushi, don't worry. NK is a big boy, he can take care of himself."

"It's not that he cannot. He is so lost these days. His moods change colors faster than a chameleon does. He is busy all the time with not a moment to spare, although no one seems to know just what he is doing. At first I thought he was dealing with his feelings towards Maya, but now I am beginning to worry about him" poured out Khushi, in one continuous stream of words.

"Khushi trust me! I am running late to a meeting, and I have to go now. See you in the evening" and the phone disconnected.

"Laad Governor" Khushi muttered darkly at the receiver in her hand.

It was well past ten thirty in the night when Khushi heard NK's footsteps as he made his way to his room.

"Nanheji"; NK heard the tentative voice and a knock as he stepped out of the bath room a little while after his arrival.

"Gimme a minute," he called out as he hurriedly pulled on his night shirt before opening the door.

Khushi pushed past him into the room and set the tray laden with food on the desk saying"Nanheji, you are becoming increasingly irresponsible with each passing day. You do not seem to heed to what anyone has to say, save what you think and want to do... " Khushi's voice trailed to a stop as she surveyed the room.

"Khushiji, I know; You probably have a million questions that you want me to answer. But please not tonight. Tomorrow night after dinner, I will answer all your questions. I promise." Said NK earnestly, placing his right hand on his heart.

"Ok Nanheji. So be it. But first, I want you to eat and then sleep. You look really tired and could use some rest.", said Khushi softly, patting his arm, her eyes filled with concern.

"Arnavji, What in Heaven's name is NK up to? I hope he is doing ok! All those files and paperwork in his room, those stacks of pictures and that simulation of some sort that was running on his computer. Add to that his late night work, weary looks and general moodiness;I am increasingly convinced that he is definitely not on a vacation as we thought."

Arnav put his book down and wrapped his arms around Khushi "What did NK tell you?"

"Nothing! He has not yet told me anything, and that's why it is bugging me... Just a minute ... " Khushi jumped and sat back on her knees, "You, you definitely know what this is all about! Don't you? And you did not even let me in on it this whole time!" she pouted.

"I would if I could Khushi. I promised NK that I would keep it a secret till he was ready to reveal it himself. It's his call. He will share when he is ready; and I am sure the first person he will share it with would be you. I am sorry I can't tell you anything. I cannot break his trust." He ended, his eyes seeking her empathy.

"I understand Arnavji. Nanheji has promised to talk to me tomorrow night after dinner and answer all my questions. But can you please reassure me of one thing; is all of this somehow connected to Maya?" Questioned Khushi, with concern lacing her voice.

Arnav squeezed Khushi's waist gently and replied looking into her eyes. "Yes Khushi! Don't worry your pretty head. All this bodes well for NK."

However, you would need to know what led to the secret in the first place. Let us go to the very beginning, that started the domino effect in NK, that has Khushi all curious and worried about. Enjoy! As usual leave your comments.

Serendipity

Part 3

"Khushiji kitni nice hain. Mera kitna khayal rakhti hain. I have to tell her all of it tomorrow. It's about time too. I just have until next Thursday, June 06, and then it will be over."

NK fiddled with the program, made a few phone calls, and finished shooting off emails while the food that Khushi left on his desk turned cold. He was not hungry. His mind was overflowing with ideas; his heart was racing with the thrill that comes after hard work and when the goal is at arm's distance.

It was past midnight when NK finally switched off his laptop and pressed a lingering kiss on the picture of Maya on his phone, before turning in for the night. As he lay down, his thoughts flew back in time to that beautiful day in October when he had set his eyes on Maya for the first time.

That night she was his 'tareeq' and she had enchanted him with her translation of the 'Nala Damayanti' play. Little did he know then, that his life was about to change.

October 12, 2012

AR Resorts, Kumarakom, Kerala.

As the final strains of the Kathakali play came to a standstill, NK returned back to Earth. The night, the beautiful setting, the mystical almost ethereal Kathakali music and Maya's translation of the story had cast a spell on him and his family.

"NK take a chill pill, or you are going to make a complete idiot of yourself before the night is out" he kept reciting to himself mentally. He noticed that both his cousins and their wives were conspicuously missing. The Raizadas left for the Villa they were staying at, in the car, while NK stayed back to walk Maya home.

"Wow! Ever explored story-telling as a profession? You'll do well. Multi-talented lakdi ho aap" gushed NK.

Maya's tinkling laughter rang though the silence of the night at NK's words. Between bursts of mirth she looked at his bewildered face and asked cocking one eyebrow, "You really don't understand why I am laughing?"

"Nope" shrugged NK.

"Lakdi nahin ladki. At first I thought that butchering the language was your style of trying to get to the girls? But you really don't know the language very well do you?"

NK's face fell and darkened. He lapsed into silence as he shoved his hands into his pockets.

Maya bit the inside of her cheek; contrite that she had misunderstood him, and sorrier that by blurting it out she had unintentionally offended NK. "Sorry Nand Kishore; I had no idea that you did not speak Hindi fluently. She looped her arm through his in an attempt to soften the impact of her earlier words.

NK relented and gave her his easy going smile as he shrugged and explained how he had grown up in Sydney all his life and how he had visited India to attend Akash's wedding, and had fallen in love with his extended family and India itself.

It was a pleasant night; both Maya and NK loved to talk, and talk they did, as they made their way back sharing stories and getting to know each other. Before they knew it, they reached the path that led to the Villa, and NK slowed down giving Maya a questioning look.

"My house is at the end of this lane." She answered his unspoken question pointing to a fork that led away from the main path they were on. "I'll make it to there on my own. It's not too far, well lit and quite safe. Thank you Nand Kishore, I had a pleasant evening in your company and you are a really nice guy" she said with a genuine smile.

NK smiled back and reaching out to hold her delicate hand, said "I had a great time too." Before he could stop himself he declared on an impulse, "Maya I want to see you again."

"May be, may be not" responded Maya, dimpling up prettily, her eyes twinkling, as she withdrew her arm and said softly "Good night".

NK watched her retreating figure till it disappeared from sight before he turned around and made his way to the villa and his room. He had to meet her again. He had dated many girls in Sydney and in India during his stay; but not until today had he felt the sharp flash of jealousy that he experienced when he thought Maya and Nannav might have been more than friends, or the surge of relief when Nannav let him know very subtly that they were really good friends and nothing more. Never before had he been so enchanted by anyone, and been so nervous about laying his feelings out in the open.

"Very strange and interesting! Maya is smart, funny, beautiful, comfortable to talk to, and exciting all at the same time. I have to explore what I felt for her today. Is it just attraction or something deeper than that? I have to find a way to get to know her and see her again." NK decided, drifting off to sleep.

Time flies when you are having fun and the 'family moon' week was no different. It was time to return back to Delhi. Maamiji and Maamaji went on their last walk that morning before they left the resorts. Naani, Anjali Di and Payal were checking the rooms to ensure nothing was left behind on accident. Arnav and Khushi had decided to take a detour to Munnar for a few days before returning to Delhi.

"Thanks Nannav mere bhai" beamed NK as he hugged Arnav "I owe you bro".

"Yeah right NK. Just be sure of yourself ok, and don't hurt her. She is a traditional gal at heart" warned Arnav in a voice audible to NK alone.

"Khushi ji have fun." Exclaimed NK cheerfully as Khushi joined them.

"Hello Hai Bye Bye NK babua, hum to bilkul forgetiya gaye the ki aaj bees October, tumra happy birthday hai", exclaimed Manorama as she patted his cheek lovingly.

The family piled their wishes on NK one by one and speculated whether they should change their plans of leaving that day.

"Nahin, Nahin, Khushi ji. Aapko aur Nannav ko apne plans follow karna chahiye. Aur maasi, Di, aap sab log bhi Delhi jaane ka plan change mat keejiye. Waise bhi you know I am leaving on my south India tour. Aapke kuvayen mere saat hai na, aur kya chaahiye right?"

"Khuvayen nahin NK bhai Duayen" corrected Akash with a smile and a hug for his amiable cousin.

The family filed into the waiting cars, when NK spied Maya walk towards them. Maya had been a constant companion the past week as she played guide to the Raizada parivar, taking them to the various touristy spots in and around that place. However, after the first date night, NK had been unsuccessful in getting her to go out with him or spending any 'alone time' with her. Maya bid farewell to Khushi and Arnav and made her way towards NK with a smile.

"Hi" she said.

"Hi yourself" replied NK with a flirtatious smile.

"So, you are leaving? Me going out with you ended up being a maybe not after all" she said with a half-smile.

NK shrugged as his heart stirred, "was that a note of wistfulness in her voice?" He wondered.

"Well that's that then, see you Nand Kishore she said as she shook his hand, and quickly left the place."

NK felt a rustle of paper as she withdrew her hand from his. It took him a second to realize that Maya had left a note with her cell phone number on it in his hands.

"Well, this is an interesting turn of events; she assumes I am leaving too." He thought, as he waved to his family and picking up his bag made his way to the presidential suite that he had checked himself into.

************

"Yes of course. I'll get it done right away ma'am" and the clerk scurried away from the sharp lashing he got from his normally even tempered boss.

Maya whirled for the nth time and frowned at the flowers sitting on her desk.

"This bouquet of wild flowers reminded me of you, one for each of your unique attributes, see you at six pm ~ Nand Kishore" said the card lying next to it.

"He was not leaving after all. I crumbled in first and left him with my cell number" Maya chewed on her lips, miffed at the thought that she had let him know her inclination for him in haste. She decided to ignore the flowers and the note at least for the time being, and keep herself busy the rest of the day.

Maya was high strung and irritant the entire day. She had just suppressed the sharp words that were threatening to burst out from her mouth at what could at best be a moronic response to an extremely picky customer from the new hospitality manager, when "Hey grumpy! Miss me? "Called out an extremely cheerful voice.

Maya spun around on one heel and her eyes landed on a very cheerful NK, clad in a T shirt, colorful jacket and comfy carpenter jeans and sneakers. He was twirling a daisy in his hand that he smartly tucked behind Maya's ear as he neared her.

Maya cooly turned around, smartly dismissed the hospitality manager in a calm voice and then she spun around, her eyes blazing as she hissed in a low voice that was twice as effective as a shout,"What the hell do you think you are doing? I am working and surrounded by guests and my staff."

NK shrugged, pleased that he had nettled her. "Since when is offering flowers to a beautiful woman considered a crime? By the by, if you keep up this grouchiness, you will be tired and have a headache by six pm. And that just won't do, will it sweet heart?" he winked and walked nonchalantly away, leaving Maya fuming inwardly.
