A/N: Dialogues come naturally to me. Descriptions are harder to write. Sorry if you missed the details. Let me know what you think :)
"Madhubala, what are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same question", she switched her modest footwear for the signature studded pumps.
"You are quite something. I never thought you were the mothering kind".
"You don't know me". She let down her caged locks and flung them in the air.
"I sure as hell would like to". One could have sworn RK sniffed in an imaginary whisker.
"Is that why you stormed out earlier?"
Madhubala was visibly angry about the unfinished encounter in Wankhede.
"You said I was allowed to".
Rishabh made a pitiful puppy face.
"Since when do you take things at face value", Madhu purposely swung her scarf in his direction.
The conversation sounded more and more like a couple's brawl.
"Are they adopted?"
"I am the mother of twenty children; soon to be twenty one. Yes, I am their legal guardian".
"So, not a parent?"
"Yes, a parent. If you are planning to advise McLean of fighting for custody then, legally, I am a sponsor. But, I am their only family".
RK was unconsciously offended that Madhu would think of him partnering up with McLean again.
"I am not as bad as you think", RK rested his case.
"Right. Have you decided on what to do with the child?"
He chose not to respond.
Their stroll down the muddy grounds of Dharavi slum city reminded RK of the country club. He wanted to experience the butterflies like he did on the asphalt. If only she would look him in the eye. Why wasn't she looking?
"Do you like me?" He grabbed her attention the only way he thought possible. Madhubala took a moment to absorb the shockwave of his words.
"I want to move on, into a peaceful haven. If you are here to take that away from me, you better be damn sure you have a place to hide. Because", she breathed in air of pride. "I am very territorial".
"I was only asking if you are attracted to me. Usually people overcorrect their love for hatred and vice versa. You are no different".
"And you?"
"Answer".
"Indifferent, that is a possibility".
"Dodged a bullet there. I had the best speech prepared for either of the two straight answers".
"I am not a smooth stick of butter".
"You do remind me of one".
"Mindless flirting with a pregnant woman does not suit you Mr. Kundra".
"Does when the woman is pregnant with my child".
"Our child. And, you are yet to decide on the custody".
"I want both, mother and child".
"Excuse me?"
"I cannot have one without the other. You see, I come from India Miss Madhubala and here, we value tradition. Mother, father and child, the whole family unit".
"I know how well that works out", Madhu had sarcasm dripping from every phoneme she uttered. "You are not in love with me. I cannot afford to be your placeholder".
She closed the door to her vehicle and drove into the darkness leaving Rishabh contemplating his life choices.
