Chapter Nineteen – The Promise
"Madhu?! Madhu! Wake up dammit!"
I shook her as she laid on the ground unconscious.
I got up and ran for water from the sink.
I splashed her face and continued to scream out her name.
That's when her eyes began to open slowly.
I let out a sigh of relief and I watched as she began to move.
She raised her hand slowly to touch my cheek. She placed her hand on the side of my face and I placed my hand on top of hers.
"I'm…okay…" she spoke with all her energy.
I wanted to yell, scream, and be angry. I couldn't. She was my weakness. I could be angry at anything, but her. Especially in that moment. She seemed so fragile. But she continued to tell me she was okay...
"How many times are you going to tell me that Madhu?"
I helped her sit up, while keeping my arm around her back to hold her up for support.
"Last time. I promise."
"You promise?"
"Promise."
"And if I were to take you to the hospital right now?"
"Give me one day. Please?"
"One day? Why Madhu?"
"I know I'm okay…And if I'm not by tomorrow morning, then I promise I'll go to the hospital with you."
"I don't kn…"
"Shhh."
She managed to put her energy into placing her finger on my lips.
"I promise you RK. There's nothing to worry about…"
She spoke tiredly.
She moved her finger away and placed her hand on the other side of my face. She held my face in her hands and looked me in the eyes.
In that moment, all I wanted to scream out to her was 'I love you', but I stopped myself. She was weak; I wanted her to be full of energy and 100% conscious when I told her.
"You look cute when you're worried."
I looked at her in amazement. Did she just call me cute? I remember thinking to myself.
I smiled at her and then removed her hands from my face. I held her hands in mine.
"You look cute when you're not sick."
She laughed tiredly.
"If you had any plans today Madhu, they're cancelled. You're resting today."
"But…"
"No ifs ands or buts Mrs. Kundra. Rest means rest."
"Then you can't go to shoot either!"
"But…"
"No ifs ands or buts Mr. Kundra."
She smiled as she repeated my line back to me. I laughed slightly and then picked her up in my arms. I walked back to her bedside and placed her in bed.
She continued to smile at me.
This time I didn't hesitate. I bent over and kissed her on her forehead.
I remember the look on her face…shock, happiness, surprise, relief, everything.
It was a cute expression.
"I'll be back in a minute."
She didn't respond to me, I figured it was because she was still taking in the kiss.
I smirked and walked out of our room.
About twenty minutes later, I returned to our room. Her eyes were closed but she was still awake.
She heard me walk in and spoke with her eyes closed.
"What took you so long RK…?"
She slowly opened her eyes.
I watched as her eyes widened with disbelief and then squinted with anger.
"I SAID NO DOCTOR RK."
I walked towards her with a doctor by my side.
"This is Dr. Malhotra biwi."
"Get out RK. I want to talk to the doctor alone."
"No, I'm staying."
"I don't want you here. Just leave."
"N…"
"Mr. Kundra, I'll need you to leave for privacy reasons."
"But I'm her husband!"
"I'm sorry, but if a patient refuses to have someone in the room during checkup…"
"You're stupid Madhu. Got that?"
I turned and walked out of our room in anger.
I had no idea what they were talking about in there.
It was twenty minutes later that the doctor walked out of our room.
"What's wrong with her doctor?!"
"Mr. Kundra, she told me to inform you that she'd like to tell you herself."
"Alright then...thanks for coming."
"Anytime."
I had Bittuji escort the doctor to the door as I myself went back into our room.
"RK…"
I looked at her with an angry look on my face.
"I'm sorry RK."
I didn't reply to her.
"He said it's just exhaustion. I need to eat more and drink fluids."
I ignored her.
"RK?"
I continued to ignore her. I was angry. Why? Because she needed privacy from ME. Me?! I'm her husband!
"Please talk to me RK…"
I refused to talk to her; I picked up my phone from the bedside table and walked out of our room.
I didn't go back to our room until night. I had no idea what she had been doing all day.
When I returned to our room, I found her sleeping peacefully.
I walked towards her and gently fixed her hair.
I bent and kissed her cheek.
I'll talk to you tomorrow, I promise, I remember thinking to myself.
She turned into a comfortable position.
I went to my side of the bed and laid down. I turned towards her and admired her face as I slowly drifted into a deep sleep.
