Chapter Eleven – The Chai

She sat down in bed and got comfortable as I got off the edge of the bed to sleep on the couch.

"You can sleep here."

Her voice was so soft that it almost startled me. I couldn't believe she had just asked me to sleep beside her. I remember turning to face her as she sat up in bed. She looked at me with a look that I still can't comprehend. She seemed…lonely. Almost as if she was desperate to just have some company beside her.

That was the day; the day the pillow wall was formed.

I slowly went and sat on the other side of the bed as she began forming a wall of pillows. I stared at her for a second and then began helping her. We both grabbed for the last pillow, my hand on top of hers.

We stared at each other for a minute and then she pulled her hand away and looked in the opposite direction of me.

"Thank you."

It was the first time I was thanking her. She looked at me almost shocked and then put on a very slight smile. Almost invisible, but it was there.

"Goodnight."

She spoke softly as she turned and slept. I put my head down and watched her sleep. She was beautiful. I felt as though my heart had stopped beating and I caught my breath just as I realized how gorgeous she really was. I gasped and sat up.

She instantly turned to stare at me with a worried look.

"Are you alr…"

She trailed off as she realized she was showing me she cared.

"I'm fine. Go to sleep."

She nodded her head again and just turned back to sleep.

I stared at her and remember thinking for the first time that I was falling in love. It had only been a couple weeks since our wedding. I'd only known her for over a month.

I told myself otherwise. I told myself it was just a minor attraction.

I was so wrong…

I slowly drifted into a deep sleep as I continued to admire her back and her hair and her perfectly sculpted body.

When I woke in the morning, I looked to my right and noticed Madhu was no longer in bed. I sat up and looked around the room, she was nowhere.

"BIWI!"

I remember my voice echoing in my room and then suddenly I heard her light footsteps. I smiled and looked towards the door. There she stood…with a tray?

I was shocked. I couldn't believe she had made chai for me. For ME!?

My mouth opened slightly. I was unable to speak as she began to walk towards me.

Just the previous night I had accepted my attraction towards her. That was a mistake. With every step she took, she took my breath away.

Her hair was open; it was slightly wet. She was air-drying it I figured.

I felt as if I was in a slow-motion film where the actress slowly walks towards the male lead with her hair flowing behind her.

I didn't even realize she was standing beside my bed until I heard the snap of her fingers.

"Earth to patidev!"

I instantly looked to my left and up at her beautiful brown eyes. Then the words rang through my ears. Patidev?

I rubbed my ear and looked back up at her.

"Patidev?"

"You call me biwi, the least I can do is call you patidev."

She smiled her perfect smile towards me. And for the first time, I saw that sparkle in her eyes. The sparkle I longed to see in her eyes. But so soon? Just a day ago she refused to talk to me but now she was serving me chai in bed? I was baffled.

She sat on the edge of the bed and faced me with the tray in her lap. I remained awestruck as she lifted the cup and handed it to me.

"This…is for last night."

"Last night?"

I didn't understand what she meant.

"For comforting me RK…I can't thank y…"

"Quiet."

I simply told her to be quiet and she listened.

"You don't need to thank me. I just said what's true biwi. Now let's see how well you make chai!"

I remember changing the topic on her because I never was the sentimental type. Sorry, thank you, please, you're welcome…that stuff just never came to me easily.

She watched as I took a sip and then placed the cup down. I stared at her and noticed a look on her face that showed that she just eagerly wanted me to praise her.

"That was…"

I let the suspense grow for her a bit and saw her grow impatient. She nodded her head waiting for me to complete my sentence. I laughed.

"Tell me!"

"Fine fine, that was actually pretty good."

"Pretty good? That's it?"

"Biwi, I hope you didn't poison me like you think I poisoned you!"

"HA! I wish I had, why didn't you mention that earlier?"

I remember looking at her and smiling at her sarcasm. She was adorable when she tried to copy me and my sarcastic ways.

"Oh and, you never poisoned me. I don't know what that was. I just threw up once. I'm okay now."

"Well that's good. Or else soon I would've been stuck in a court case about your murder."

"You're funny RK…"

She spoke sarcastically again as I continued to smile at her.

"Why are smiling at me so much?"

"Can't I smile biwi?"

She looked at me for a second and figured it was a losing battle on her end. She didn't question my smile any further. She went to get up but I grabbed her arm and pulled her close.

We locked eyes for a second and then she blinked and looked down at my hand on her arm.

I gently released her arm and looked at her.

"There's a, well there's a party…it's just a retirement party for Ram Uncle on set…I was wondering if…do you want to come?"

"Me? Party?"

"It'll be fun. And I'm sure you'll like to get away from the stress of the world right now."

"I don't kn…"

"Please?"

She looked at me. A bit shocked at that word coming out of my mouth. Then she looked down while in deep thought. After about a minute of silence she looked up at me.

"Okay, but what do I wear?"

"Hmm, have you ever worn modern clothes?"

"Once. At ma and papa's anniversary party. Ma bought me a beautiful red dress and…"

"Biwi! I'll find you something. Don't worry about what you have to wear. Just be ready by 7pm."

"How long is it?"

"Hmm I'm guessing max four hours. But we won't stay that long."

"Okay…I guess I'll be ready."

"Perfect! Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go call Bittuji to make sure all the preparations are completed."

I got out of bed and noticed her eyes following me as I walked to the door.

I slowly turned and saw her staring at me. She instantly looked away.

"Thanks again for the wonderful chai biwi."

Her eyes shot back towards me and she smiled slightly as I turned to leave our room.

Yes, OUR. I accepted that fact that the room was no longer mine. It was my wife's and mine now. It was ours.
