Chap 7:

A nosy reptile:

There was a sudden blaze of light and a shock of fresh breeze coming in from the outside. The doors were opened wide. To accommodate the swinging arms of the man and a new phenomenon known as Maan Singh Khurana. He was not new in the sense that he was born yesterday. But he was new because he was a man with an air of mystery. For the curious onlooker he presented a look of quiet unassuming dignity. When he walked by people noticed. For it was long strides taken fast to cover the patch of space under his feet as soon as he could. It was a sign of a man with a lot on his mind and on his plate.

When he passed by them, people did not say 'Oh look! There goes a handsome man.'. Instead they just gave way as a mark of respect. He was not a girl's crush, he was a woman's man. He was not one who would generally be considered conventionally handsome. His nose was too sharp, his jaw too angular, his eyes too angry. But being handsome was not everything.

But why are we talking about him today and not at the beginning? For lots of reasons the lizard on the wall would know but for us to find out.

ASR:

He was driving back home in his Mercedes type car. He was driving on the lonely bend of the road, hair's breadth away from the precipice and brought his car to a screeching halt. He did that when he wanted to think. Somehow his brain did not work in any other location. But he was also tired. And he felt an unexplained weight loss. He closed his eyes for some shut eye.

**************************************************

"Bhaiyya!"

ASR "What the! You cannot call me Bhaiyya."

Geet "Bhaiyya…"

It sounded to him like Amitabh Bachan saying 'Maa' in a girly nasal voice.

ASR "Stop calling me that! How dare you. I might be loose dammit. But I don't believe in incest like fornicating frogs."

Geet "I am only calling you that to save myself Bhaiyya. The only way to escape your hotness factor is to tie a rakhi on your sexy hairy hand."

ASR breathed a little sigh of relief. That was a very acceptable explanation.

Geet "How can I concentrate on drooling over the Khuranas when I have you before me Bhaiyya? This is the only way. Please forgive me."

ASR nodded "Ok dammit. I forgive you."

**************************************************

He opened his eyes. Vow that was a weird dream. But it helped him keep his sanity in check when a girl was not attracted to him. That girl dared to talk about exams when Arnav Singh Raizada was in front of her!

Maan:

He came into the office early. He had interviews to do. He usually did not do those anymore. But this was special. He was looking for a secretary for the CEO. And he could not afford to leave this decision in somebody else's hands. A secretary might be just a secretary. But for a person like Dev it meant hiding his inefficiencies from the outside world. So Maan would spare no expense and effort in hiring the best.

He heard a soft knock on the door. And when he looked up, he kept looking.

Maan "Apparently the world is not small enough."

Standing before him was a college girl. She was wearing jeans and a top. This girl certainly hated sleeves and shoulder straps. She wore a thin chain around her neck and not many other embellishments. Her long hair was wound up in a deliberately careless fashion and clipped to the rest of her scalp. A pair of glasses were worn with outlandish plastic rims. He never paid much attention to women's clothing. He usually just bracketed them. This one would most likely fall under the category of 'Uber cool and chic' as Annie would tell his deaf ears.

Geet "Hello. Good morning. Nice to meet you."

So pretending to be strangers are we?

Maan "So Ms Handa did you lose your way to college? Or are you here for the interview."

She seemed subdued "For the interview."

On a jocular note when life comes a full circle in this manner one tends to enjoy it. Especially when one gets to say, 'I told you so' or 'Every dog has its day' or some such wise apt anecdote. The heart is usually smiling although the face has a sense of seriousness. Maan would probably have enjoyed something like this as one of life's cruel jokes against lesser mortals under normal circumstances. But looking at her face did not make it funny. Was he a big moron or what?

Maan "Ms Handa. You seem to have changed your career path since the time I met you last. Not the best impression I get as a potential employer."

Geet "Things have changed. I need to get a job now."

Maan saw a grim determination on her face.

Maan "You seem to need this desperately. For you are willing to work for a person you accused of being a liar."

She was still standing by the door fiddling with the extraneous strings of her hobo. They were a rage Annie had told him unnecessarily. Unless they were used to light a fire Maan failed to understand how. They looked cheap, thin and shapeless with no character. He never understood fashion. Good thing he designed only buildings eh.

Maan "Do you need an invitation? Come in and sit. Let us get this over with."

She walked in hurriedly and sat in the opposite chair. Although he did not. He was walking around. More a torture technique than a proper interview method. But such was his habit.

Maan "Let us start with a memory test. For you seem to be weak in that area. What is my name?"

Geet's eyes became like flying saucers. Unidentified expressions were coursing through them. Was she angry? This one certainly had a hard time keeping her temper under check. This would be fun.

Geet "You don't have to rub it in."

Maan "Oh man! You seriously have a hard time remembering names, don't you? Not secretary material I would say. You would make a good receptionist though. It helps to forget people who called sometime earlier there."

Her eyebrows furrowed indicating acute irritation "Fine. Dev Singh Khurana."

He stopped his pacing. This girl had a very serious problem.

Geet "See, I know what it looks like. For you this might be fun. Just because you are CEO of a company you think you can mess with people like me. I understand why you had to lie about your name though. In your position I suppose it is necessary. I don't hold it against you."

He was amused no end about this "So you think I am actually the CEO of this company and that my name is Dev Singh Khurana?"

Geet "I saw the invitation in your coat pocket. So you can most likely imagine what you made me feel like. A low life wastrel that you were planning to shake off after the party."

Her face showed a genuine sense of hurt about this. And Maan was angry. He did not care much for people who put themselves in a low place and felt bad about it.

Geet "So can we please put this behind us?"

Maan's eyes became like slits and his voice went up a notch "Ms Handa, you don't get to tell what I need to do, you understand?"

Her face became expressionless.

Maan "Yes I was nice to you. That does not mean you get to walk in here with your arms swinging and expect to get a job based on mercy. I don't do mercy."

Geet lowered her eyes.

Maan "Good. Since I have already showed you where your place is at the party and you judged me based on that I think this interview is over."

Geet started shaking her head and getting up. Her hands began to talk again.

Maan "SIT DOWN."

She slowly sat down.

Maan "Do you really need this job?"

She just nodded this time.

Maan "Then prove to me based on your imaginative logic that you were the one who was wrong at the party."

Geet "Huh?"

Maan crossed his arms.

She thought for a bit and continued in a low voice.

Geet "I was wrong because you had already introduced yourself to me once in front of another person. In the book signing before Arif. If I had remembered your words then I would not be a fool at the party asking your name again. I was distracted by playing angry birds and failed to concentrate on people around me. So if you lied to me to chide me for my foolishness and treated me like a petulant child I get it. Hence proved it was I who insulted you."

Maan "Tell me why I should hire you amongst the bright ladies sitting outside."

Geet "I am young and foolish. I am still in college where we are forced to sit in a classroom for the sake of attendance. And we develop habits to break that monotony that range from doodling unintelligible modern art on our subject notebooks to playing mind numbingly stupid games with the paltry memory and processor of an archaic cell phone that our loved ones can afford to buy for us. Somewhere along the way we forget that we are more intelligent than a mere cell phone. That we don't need a stupid small device to communicate with the world and understand it. We forget that it is supposed to help us and not rule our lives."

Maan "What does this have to do with the ladies sitting outside Ms Handa?"

Geet continued as if he had not spoken "So you see I decided yesterday that when I need to do something important I would turn off my cell phone first thing. As soon as I entered the waiting lounge I stuffed the blank cell phone into the corner of my spacious purse where it would take some effort for me to find it. And then I just sat down there to make my mind blank."

Maan had to stop himself from smiling.

Geet "And when that stupid device is turned off we look at the world around us with new eyes. I looked at my fellow interviewees. Now you see they did not do any such thing to concentrate on the job at hand. A few of them were turning the pages of the same magazine several times. One of them was filing her nails. And two of them were smiling at the cell phone. One of them had ear phones stuck to her ears to invariably trapeze in the world of music. Now you get to decide who you prefer amongst all of us."

Maan "I thought you wanted to do a Phd."

Geet "I still want to. But I thought I might be a tad overqualified to work for you then."

Maan smiled lightly.

Maan "Alright Ms Handa. You may leave now. You will get to know the status of your interview from the HR."

Bl**dy!!!They never asked me such realistic questions in any of the interviews I attended.
Moral of the story...try sneaking into corporate parties and pi** off the potential employer ...
as in "get-to-know" the employer before hand.
It makes things much easier 😆
