"But… But how is that possible!!!!!! "
Sudhir Ahluwalia was ballistic. He had been so ever since the doctor gave them the "good news". Pacing around had not helped. Nor had asking this question to himself a million times! Hence he spoke it out loud, to no one in particular, but to everyone in the room.
Everyone stared at him as if he had lost it. Arohis silence was unknowingly triggering the nervousness in everyones belly. Lovedeep had finally walked up to Arohi and scrouched down in front on her. Cupping her face, she tried to search in her eyes about what was she feeling right now. And her eyes told her a lot. They spoke of anxiety, confusion, fear, eagerness, marvel and shock. But above all, they spoke of elation. Of innate happiness, that can only be witnessed upon feeling complete.
Lovedeep smiled and kissed her forehead. Amrit watched in horror. Her mind refused to process this news as reality. She wanted to talk to Arohi. Ask her if it was really true or there was some mistake. But the small smile that adorned Arohis lips after lovedeep kissed her, confirmed her fears. The news was true. It was very much possible that Arohi could be pregnant. Amrit dropped Arohis hand like a hot coal.
"Tujhe vishwaas nahi horaha hai ya tu sachme pooch raha hai pregnant kaise hote hain??!!"
Everyone turned to look at DJ who was standing at the foot of the steps. She had heard everything. An awkward silence spread across the room as DJ walked up to Arohi. Amrit got up from her seat for her mother-in-law to sit. DJ sat next to Arohi and looked at her. Her eyes were downcast. Arohi suddenly felt guilty. How could she tell her grandmother that she was pregnant and she was happy about it? The same grandmother whose husband was in the hospital, in coma. And the accusation of putting him in that state lay on the father of her child! Tears filled her eyes as Daddus unconsious form flashed in her mind.
But her conscience was cleared of every guilt as she felt DJ place a hand on her head. Arohis head snapped to look at her DJ smile back at her kindly. Arohi could finally control no more and with a cry she hugged her grandmother.
Lovedeep smiled to see her mother be the bigger person here. DJ storked Arohis hair as she whispered a soft "congratulations" in her ear. Arohi smiled through her tears and hugged her tighter.
Karan had started feeling uncomfortable now, not to mention out of place. He moved inside the guest room to make a call and Lovedeep sat in his place on the sofa, smiling stupidly at her mom and niece.
If Arohis father was livid before then there was no word to explain his state now. He was… shockingly livid!!!
"Lekin… Lekin biji. Unn dono ke beech kabhi aisa koi rishta nahi tha!!! Woh dono ek dusre se nafrat karte they. Aur jab tak sab kuch thik hua, tab mein aur bauji usse ghar wapas le aaye. Usske baad jo bhi hua woh aap sabne dekha hai!!!" Sudhir ranted away without a breath, his gaze glancing at each and every family member to confirm his theory.
DJ left Arohi to look at her son. "Tujhe kaise pata? Aur jiss din tumlog Arohi ko lene gaye they tab woh kaha thi??? Arjun ke kamre mein na??? Aur kya woh khushi khushi tumhare saath aane ke liye raazi hogayi thi???"
Sudhir stared at his mother blankly as he remembered Arohis smile when she had opened the door to their room. How the smile had slipped a bit before she composed herself to greet them. How she had cried her eyes out and claimed that she loved Arjun and did not want to leave him. The only reason she had come home without a fight was because Teji aunty had tagged her going home as a "pagphere ki rasam" and Arjun had promised to get her back in two days.
His fears returned as he sat on the chair behind him. But then that was more than two months ago. After that had they…??? No… Arjun was in their house and later in jail. He shook his head in confusion.
"Lekin uss baat ko toh do mahine se upar hogaye! Abb kaise…"
"Bevkoofon jaisi baatein mat kar!" DJ cut him off. "Aisa jaroori nahi hai ki ussi waqt pata chaley. Pregnancy ki nishaani ek mahine baad dikh sakti hai ya do mahine baad bhi. Agar Arohi ko morning sickness ya aisa kuch nahi hua to pata kaise chalega!!! Kya doctor ne ya kaha ki kitne mahine huey hain?"
Sudhir shook his head but Rajveers mind had already switched into alert mode, hearing his brother claim that it was not possible because Arohi and Arjun hated each other. He had been there when Kumud had slapped her and he had felt the animosity in the house for his niece. His body became rigid as a horrible possibility niggled in his brain. He will kill Arjun with his bare hands if his doubt was right. He walked upto Arohi, grabbed a chair and sat in front of her. Taking her hands in his, he spoke softly, defying the storm building in his nerves.
"Arohi… look at me." When she looked up, he was a bit relieved seeing her face, but he had to get it out in words, and from the horses mouth.
"Arohi… maine uss ghar mein tere liye nafrat dekhi hai. Badle ki aag insaan ko jaanwar bana sakti hai, aur maine Arjun ki aankhon mein woh aag uss waqt dekhi thi. I would like to believe that he will not stoop to that level. But I want you to tell me the truth. Kya ye sab teri marzi se hua tha… ya… Arjun ne… zabardasti…"
Rajveers voice choked with the horror of his own words. Amrit gasped, her hand cupped her mouth and tears clouded her eyes as she realised what Rajveer was asking. A brief possibility of it being true crumbled her strength and she started to sob quietly for her daughter.
"NAHI CHACHU!!!" Arohi spoke a bit too loudly. She took a deep breath and squeezed Rajveers hands.
"Arjun ne aaj tak, kabhi bhi mera fayda uthaane ki koshish nahi ki hai. Naa tab, jab hum jungle mein they, ya Sarali gaye they, ya fir tab jab mein usske ghar mein thi. Humare beech mein nafrat jaroor thi lekin ussne kabhi mujhe galat nazar se nahi dekha. Kabhi mujhe unsafe feel nahi karaaya. Infact ussne uss ghar mein mujhe hamesha protect kiya hai."
Rajveer let out a sigh of relief. Arohi looked everyone in the eye to confirm what she said.
"Woh kehta tha ki mujhe torture karne ka hakk sirf usse hai… kisi aur ko nahi! N he kept his word. He always protected me from his mother, brother, father or even that…" Arohi gritted her teeth as she remembered Jignesh. She should not mention him or what he did right now, her family had enough on their plate already. She looked at Rajveer assuringly.
"Arjun ne aaj tak meri marzi ke khilaaf mujhe chuaa tak nahi hai."
Everyone let out a breath of relief, everyone except Sudhir and Amrit.
"Wo ek deal thi, ek sauda, jo humne kiya tha. Uss divorce ke badle mein tumne mujhe kuch diya tha."
Arjuns voice outside the courthouse suddenly appeared in Sudhirs mind. He had been confused when Arjun had mentioned this, unable to understand what had Arohi agreed to. He also remembered Arjuns devil smile that had followed this dialogue. Had his daughter… No! She would not trade her honour for a divorce!!! Could she…???
This meant that whatever happened was with Arohis permission. And even though they were married at that time, given the circumstances, the Ahluwalias had never considered this marriage as valid. Sudhir turned on the lawyer in him as he prepared to place his argument.
"Agar ye sab sach maan liya jaaye, fir bhi right now they are going through a divorce. Ab sirf 5 mahine bache hain unke talaak mein. Aise mein ek bachha??? Ye case ko bhi complicate kar sakta hai aur Arohi ki zindagi ko bhi. Isski umar hi kya hai! Aur divorce ke baad kya Arohi poori zindagi ek single mother ki tarah jeeyegi??? Usski shaadi ka kya?" Sudhir shook his head."No, I don't think this is a good idea!!!"
"I agree with Sudhir." Arvind broke his silence finally. He was a lot like his father, he will not speak up unless he thinks the entire situation through. But whatever Sudhir said was right and he had to support him.
The Ahluwalia brothers had a point and everyone was pondering on that. Arohis head started spinning again. Never ever she had thought so much in such a small frame of time. There was no time to gauge her emotions, to live them out. She was forced to push them at the back of her mind and think about her fathers concerns. She wanted to be alone to gather her thoughts, but that looked impossible right now. Moreover, noone bothered to know what she wanted!
Did she herself know what she wanted? Arohi tried to shut her ears and block out the world. For a moment, she wanted to connect to the innocent life that taken shelter in her womb. Her child. Her and Arjuns child. Did she want it? Yes… with all her heart!!! She closed her eyes briefly to recollect the night, when she had finally felt complete, when they both had surrendered to each other. That night they had not only made love, but made this wonderful baby… their love child. Arohis heart warmed with this thought. She wanted to float more in this exquisite feeling, but Rajveers statement made her open her eyes.
"Ye decision aapka nahi hai bhaiyya." Sudhir was shocked to see Rajveer speak up against him. He had expected his younger brother to be in his favour. He was Arohis best friend and yet…
"Ye decision Arohi ko lena hai. Ki usse ye bachha chahiye ya nahi. I don't think we should impose our thoughts and feelings on her."
Arohi smiled at her chachu thankfully and Rajveer returned the smile. He had seen the happiness in Arohis eyes and he thought back on his promise of not losing her again. If she wanted to keep the child, then Rajveer would make sure that he helped her overcome every problem in her way.
"Mein Rajveer se sehmat hu." DJ supported her younger son. "Ye faisla Arohi ne karna hai. Ye bachha aur ye zindagi dono Arohi ke hai."
Amrit was at total loss. The uncertainity of her daughters future was clenching her heart. Why had god chosen her daughter to go through this? At this age?! She closed her eyes, silently praying, for Arohi make the right decision.
"Ye bachha aur ye faisla… sirf Arohi ka nahi hai."
Amrits eyes opened with a snap.
Rajveer turned his head.
Arohi looked up.
All the Ahluwalias stared at Arjun, who stood in the open doorway, wearing a black shirt and black pants, a cream colour jacket, his hands in his pant pockets and fire in his eyes.
He strode inside like a panther on a prowl, a man on a mission, with Romit close behind him. Rajveer got up from his chair and walked up to stand in front of him, blocking his way. Arjun stopped. For the first time, Arjun saw the absence of anger or hatred in Rajveers eyes. There was just pure concern and fierce protectiveness, to keep his own safe.
"Rajveer… Mein yaha jhagda karne nahi aaya hoon."
Rajveer stared at Arjun in the eye. After thinking for a moment, he turned sideways, clearing his way. Arjun looked at his in-laws before his eyes rested on Arohi. She looked a bit pale, her eyes were red from crying and she was staring at him in disbelief.
It had not been more than an hour that they had found out and Arjun was already here!!! Was she really awake or still unconscious and dreaming? She stared as he walked up to her to stand in front of her. His eyes had softened ever since they had locked with hers, a fire had lit in them when her own eyes smiled at him. He looked at Arohi, took a deep breath, and turned to address his in-laws.
"Mein Arohi ko apne saath le jaane aaya hu."

While the Ahluwalias were busy getting shocked, Romits eyes were scanning the room. When he found his target standing in one corner, he smiled and his head gave a short nod of thanks.
Sanchit smiled back at him...
