CHAPTER 45:

"Sameera."

Geet gasped, looking at Maan, "So this was the woman Dev had mentioned before Maan came and interrupted them."

The sting of tears still in her eyes, Geet had been glad for Maan's support until she looked up at him. All her hopes came crashing down with his look. Pure anger and disbelief was etched on his face. The joy of the entire evening had been destroyed by the hateful words of her boss and now the distrust in Maan's eyes. She froze, unable to say anything further.

"Maan." Sameera acknowledged, pulling herself together, and offering her hand, "It's been a long time." She looked into his eyes, searching for the remnants of their past in the darkness of his orbs.

"Mrs. Sameera Chopra. So kind of you to finally grace the party with your presence." He mocked, making no move to take her proffered hand. But Sameera was not a woman to be daunted. "Oh Maan! So formal, after all we have meant to each other." she taunted.

His emotions were completely concealed and to any onlooker, it would look like they were discussing politics. But the unconscious digging of his nails into the soft skin of her bare waist told Geet otherwise.

The uncouth silence was thankfully interrupted by Rahul, "Bhabhi, you know Mr. Khurrana? Wow! Small world isn't it?"

Sameera smiled ironically at Rahul, "I know Mr. Khurrana very well." She stated suggestively. The slight emphasis she put on the word 'know' and the glitter in her eyes was not missed by Maan or Geet, but Rahul was thankfully oblivious.

"Kya Bhabhi, aap bhi na. You proclaim to know Mr. Khurrana and you didn't know that he is married to your secretary?" he laughed, shaking his head.

"Her secretary?" Maan's world stopped for a moment, his hold loosening on Geet's waist slightly.

Geet, who felt each nuance of his movement, realized that he was not happy over this. She had deliberately led him to believe otherwise, but she hadn't counted on such an occurrence. Before she could think further, Dev, Naintara, Annie and Arjun came all of a sudden.

Having seen Sameera, they were afraid for Maan. Geet had brought a lot of changes in Maan and they didn't want Maan to go back to his old harsh demeanor. They had always stood like a wall between Maan and anybody who would dare to harm him. And they were doing the same today.

Naintara arctic syllables rang out, "Sameera, what the …" but was cut off by Maan's warning tones, "Naintara meet Mrs. Sameera Chopra, the CEO of CE. We were all waiting to make her acquaintance and finally we get to meet her. Surprising thing is she is Geet's boss. Just imagine, I didn't know who my own wife works for." The bite in Maan's words was not lost on Dev and Geet, who looked at each other in apprehension. Maan's tone had an edge of danger. Dev summed up the situation and cursed himself for having played this trick. Knowing Maan, he knew this would not go down well with him.

Just the mention of Sameera was usually enough to make Maan burn, he was afraid of what havoc her presence would bring in his life now. He needed to clear the air before Geet had to bear the brunt of his fallacy.

Some other clients joined them, and the moment was lost. On the surface, all was well, but something drastic had occurred which could change the future of a lot of lives.

Maan held Geet tightly to him, not letting her go away for even a moment. Grabbing his chance, he pulled a submissive Geet outside where they could talk with no disturbance. He needed to talk to her right now and clear these thoughts raging in his mind. After so long he had decided to trust another woman, and what he did he get? Betrayal again!

His memories wiped out his logical mind and he couldn't think straight. Sameera's words, her actions, her betrayal, all passed before his eyes, making him bleed in pain.

"Dev-Naintara ke saamne maine tumhe kuch nahi kaha. Lekin tumne kyu kiya? Did you hide Sameera's truth from me to take some kind of twisted revenge? Did you think it would be funny? Haan Geet?" he spat. Geet just looked at him with painful eyes, unable to believe that his trust was so shallow. Had it but taken a whiff of his past to shatter all that they had so painstakingly built?

"Dekho mat Geet. Mujhe jawaab do. Hmmm? Tumhe mere ateet ka sach jaanna tha na! Lekin I never thought you would stoop so low as to make a mockery out of my feelings this way Geet." He alleged devastatingly.

Geet was horrified at his accusation. She could never even in her wildest dreams do anything to hurt this man. Why didn't he understand that hurting him was like hurting herself. Was their relation so shallow that he could accuse her of something so vicious?

"Aap dawa karte ho na, ke aap meri aankhen padh sakte ho? Aur ye padha aapne inme?" she wobbled out. Breathing had become painful, and uttering each word took her immense courage. Her words hit Maan hard. He was taken aback with the devastation he saw in those hazels that had always been a mirror to her soul. But right now he was just too confused and broken himself to trust his eyes, to trust his heart, to trust his judgment.

She had lied to him about her job, about Rahul, about Sameera. Of course she knew about Sameera, hadn't he heard Dev telling her about it with his own ears? Then why was she proclaiming innocence?

He hardened his heart which was screaming at him to just shut up and take her away from here, before any more damage occurred to the already tattered remains of their relationship, but he was too drowned in pain to heed the warning.

"If that isn't the truth then why did you lie? Tumne kyu mujhe ye nahi bataya ke you are working for Sameera? Why did you tell me that Rahul is your boss?

Geet, who had garnered some control by now protested, "Maine aapse kab jhooth bola? Did you ever ask me who I work for? Did you ever show any interest in my job Maan?"

But he cut her off, "Accha? Koi jhooth nahi bola?"

She looked away, knowing that she was partially guilty. After all, she had deliberately misled him into thinking that Rahul was her boss on Dev's advice.

"Tumne jaan boojkar jhooth bola! Pehle Rahul aur ab Sameera…"

His continuous taunts and accusations were getting to her, "Sameera ke bare me to baat hi mat kijiye! Kya aapne mujhe kabhi uske bare me bataya? How was I supposed to know ke wo kaun hai? How was I supposed to know that the woman I am working for is my husband's ex!" She retorted, unheeding of the consequences.

"Geet! Apni hadd me raho!" He screamed, grasping her rudely by her arms, glaring at her. Anger was overtaking his senses at the harsh reminder of his past and his eyes bored into hers, which she met unflinchingly. She had had enough of his appalling attitude.

"Hadd? Kaunsi hadd Maan? I didn't know there were any boundaries in a marriage? A marriage is based on love, faith and trust not accusations and boundaries!" She retorted, hurt at his statement.

"Ek to tum galtiyan karti ho, aur upar se mujhe tewar deti ho?" He alleged furiously, his nails digging into the fragile skin of her forearms, unable to believe her nerve. But Geet was too lost in the moment to notice the physical discomfort; all her dreams lay shattered before her eyes. Finding some inner strength, she pushed him away, freeing herself, "Mai aapko tewar dikha rahi hu?" she whispered agonizingly.

"Balki shaadi ke pehle din se, mai apni taraf se poori koshish kar rahi hu, ke sab sahi ho. Taaki aapko koi pareshani na ho, taaki fir se koi galti na ho, taaki aap mujhse nafrat karna bandh kar do. Par mai chahe aapke liye kitna kuch kar lu, aapke liye wo kam hi hoga!" Tears dropped down her cheeks as she glared at him, the crushed fragments of her heart visible for him to see, had he been in his senses.

But, he was lost in his own pain, unable to see her bleeding heart.
