"Bless me, Baba!"
Baba automatically placed his hand on Nidhi's head even as his eyes sought AShutosh!
Ashutosh gave him a faint smile in response.
"My blessings are always with you, Nidhi...if this is what you want, then so be it!"
Nidhi smiled at him.
"It is, Baba'it is my dream'and wasn't this your dream for my mother too'so, I am fulfilling two dreams here'I want to become as renowned a doctor as Dr Ashutosh and you!"
Baba smiled at that.
"You certainly will, Nidhi,'but I have to say that I for one will miss you a lot!"
His eyes strayed to Ashutosh as he said this but again, Ashu's face remained impassive.
"It is just another two years or so, Baba'.and Delhi is hardly a distance'and I can visit over weekends'and so can you'and besides, Dr Ashutosh and you will be so busy with your pet project that you won't even have the time to miss me'I will be back before you know it!"
Baba nodded his head even while his expression remained sombre.
"Get out of here, how dare you'!"
Col Verma came running, wondering what the matter was with Dadi Bua.
He was stunned to see Mallika at the doorstep, carrying a small baby in her arms!
"Bua'calm down'don't shout this way'and she is a guest!"
"Guest'tera dimag toh teekh hain na, Yog'.this woman tried to kill your daughter!"
"I have not forgotten, Bua'but you have forgotten that I am an army man'even soldiers from opposite camps bond over a cup of tea at the end of the day'before raining bullets on each other the next day'so please'!"
Dadi Bua was furious but had no choice but to remain silent after that.
"Yes Dr Mallika, what can I do for you?"
Col Verma's tone was polite and yet cold.
"I need your blessings for my son!"
Dadi Bua burst out again.
"You try to kill our child'and then you want us to bless yours?"
"I know'selfish, am I not'but then, which mother is not when it comes to her child'please Sir'please Maaji,,,,,my son needs your blessings,'if he is to remain untouched by the sins of his mother!"
Col Verma's face softened a bit.
"Please come in, Dr Mallika'!"
He turned to his Bua.
"Will you not offer a guest some refreshments, Bua..is this our culture?"
Dadi Bua walked away in a huff.
Mallika walked in and seated herself on the sofa.
Ashish looked at Col Verma curiously and then gave him a friendly smile.
Col Verma could not help responding.
He reached out and patted the child's cheek.
"Ba..ba'ba'baba'!"
Col Verma looked at MAllika in surprise.
She laughed spontaneously.
"He calls all men Baba'and all women Mama,'.!"
Col Verma smiled at that.
"Sir'I came here to apologize to you'for all the crimes that I have committed against both yourself and your daughter'as a doctor, my job was to save lives'and yet, in my madness, I endangered both your lives'I don't know if an apology is any recompense for my actions'and yet, I have nothing else to offer'I beg of you to please forgive me..!"
Tears of shame and regret filled Mallika's eyes as she spoke.
"Nidhi told me all about it, Dr Mallika'like you said, your actions were fueled by a kind of madness'all I can say is I am glad you recognize that and feel regret for your actions'I would be a lesser man that I would like to be if I denied you pardon'.!"
MAllika looked at him gratefully.
"You have given me more than I deserve'.but this is for my son, Sir'he should not have to carry the burden of my sins all his life'I want to relieve him of it'I want my child to live a worthy life'and that would never have been possible without your pardon and blessings!"
She got up and came forward and touched Col Verma's feet.
Col Verma placed his hand on her head and then on Ashish's head too.
"Bless you, Dr Mallika'and God bless your child too'you have suffered for your sins too'please be relieved of the burden and live the rest of your life in peace!"
"Now, I know why Ashutosh fell in love with your daughter, Sir'all of you share the same unbelievable generosity of spirit'I don't know if God listens to the prayers of sinners'if he does, then I pray he blesses your family and you with every happiness that you seek!"
Dadi Bua came in just then and placed the tray on the table. As she turned to go, Ashish called out to her.
"Ma'ma'mama'!"
The old woman's face softened to an unbelievable degree as she looked at the child.
Mallika held him out to her.
"Please Maaji'take him'bless him with your love'maybe I would have been a better person if I had the guiding hand of a woman such as yourself over my head'.bless my son with all that I do not have'!"
Dadi Bua appeared torn.
Ashish waved his hands at her and cooed to her again.
"Ma..ma'Mama'.!"
Dadi Bua could not resist him this time.
Mallika bent down to touch the old lady's feet, moistening it with her tears of regret.
Nidhi opened the door to Dr Ashutosh's cabin only to be shocked by the sight before her.
Ashutosh was giving Ashish his bottle. The baby was waving his hands in the air, even as his mouth worked furiously at the bottle.
"So, you are part-timing as a nanny these days?"
Ashutosh looked at her without expression.
"You needed me for something?"
Nidhi had found a window in her normally crammed schedule and decided that she would join Dr Ashutosh for lunch. Not that she was going to tell him that now.
"I wanted to talk to you about something'but you are clearly busy otherwise!"
"Mallika had to come in to the hospital to check on a patient she operated on two days ago. She had no one to leave Ashish with since her maid has taken the day off'and Ashish has been running a mild temperature since morning'so she did not want to risk exposing the other kids by leaving him at the crche'.I saw that she was harried'so offered to help'anything else you want to know?"
Nidhi shook her head in anger.
"Why should I want to know anything'who am I after all'just your lowly wife!"
"If that is the way you feel!"
Ashutosh shrugged his shoulders and turned back to the baby!
Nidhi could believe that he was so indifferent to her feelings. Something broke within her when she saw the baby in Dr Ashutosh's arms. It was like a dagger to her heart when the baby had called him Baba the other day.
"So, shall I leave then?"
Ashutosh turned to her.
"Of course,'unless whatever you wanted to discuss needs my immediate attention!"
"It does not matter anymore!"
Nidhi turned to leave just as the door opened and Mallika entered.
Nidhi could not help noticing how her expression softened seeing Dr Ashutosh feeding her baby. What the hell was going on here?
"Ashutosh'did he trouble you too much?"
Ashutosh shook his head as he smiled at the baby fondly.
"No way, Mallika'if this is trouble, then I am willing to suffer it for a lifetime!"
Nidhi drew her breath in sharply.
Mallika turned to Nidhi.
"Hello Nidhi'how are you?"
"As good as I can be'.considering the circumstances!"
Mallika was taken aback but did not comment.
"I think your father may have mentioned to you that '."
"Yes, he did'and good for you'that you have a son to use as bait now'to get all that you want!"
"Nidhi'!"
Nidhi turned at the sound of Ashutosh's voice.
"Well'didn't say anything wrong, did I'I mean who can resist a child'.all crimes pardoned in the name of a child'!"
Mallika intervened before Ashutosh could say anything.
"You are right, Nidhi'nobody can hold anything against a child'and yes, my child is my ticket to redemption'but can you blame me, Nidhi'I am willing to clutch at any straw if it will pull me out of the whirlpool of my sins'.maybe I would have drowned altogether if Ashish had not come into my life'he is my lifeline'you are so right, Nidhi!"
How do you respond when someone admits to every crime that you accuse them of?
Mallika took an envelope from her bag.
She held it out to Ashutosh.
"I wanted to give this back to you in Nidhi's presence, Ashutosh!"
Ashutosh looked at her quizzically.
"What is it?"
"A cheque for the sum that you transferred in my name'for the house!"
Ashutosh shook his head.
"Why are you giving it back to me'it is your money'!"
"This is my contribution to the work that you plan to do, Ashu'.please afford me the honour of being a part of it in some small way!"
"No Mallika'I cannot accept this'I appreciate the thought'but no'!"
Ashish, who had sensed Mallika's presence by now, held his arms out at her.
Mallika took the baby from Ashutosh and kissed his head absently.
She then gave the envelope to Ashish and extended his hand towards Ashutosh.
"You can refuse me'but not Ashish'please take it as his contributuion, Ashutosh'.his mother has earned him only the burden of sins till now'let her make an effort to earn him some blessings too'whenever a child finds a home with you, he or she will bless you'and some of those blessings will go to my son too'please Ashutosh'.don't say no to Ashish'he needs more blessings than most!"
Ashutosh heaved a sigh and then accepted it reluctantly.
Nidhi was furious. He had not wanted her to be a part of his efforts and now, he was willing to accept Mallika's donation. Was this how much she mattered to him?
"Sorry to interrupt..but I have to go..but you guys carry on'old friends after all'there must be lots to catch up on!"
Nidhi turned on her heel and left.
