CRYING FAMILY 29.7
Geet had woken up earlier than usual that morning. She had to go to the temple before going to school. She quickly bathed and wore one of her favourite silk sarees with a little zari border. There was a woman selling strands of jasmine flowers near the temple. She bought some and tucked it into her hair.
As she entered the temple, the priest smiled at her taking the basket containing betel leaves, supari and coconut which she handed to him. "As usual the pooja is to be performed in the name of Maan?" he asked and she just nodded. She prayed with all her heart for the well being of her Maan as she had been doing for the past 30 years, when he had tied the yellow thread round her neck. Yes, today was their 30th wedding anniversary.
After the performing the pooja, the pandit offered her kumkum which she put on her Maang. Then she rushed home as she had to leave for school soon.
On reaching home she first went and took the Babaji's photo from the pooja shelf. After touching the pic to her forehead, she opened the frame. There was another photo behind that of Babaji. She took it out and stared at it silently her eyes filling with tears. She remembered the day it was taken, very well.
It had been the day after their wedding. When her mother's health had taken for the worse, the elders had decided not to wait for a week longer. So Maan and Geet had got married in a simple ceremony at home, the very next day. Rano's joy knew no bounds. She hugged and kissed the couple and blessed them profusely from her heart. Geet had been eighteen and Maan twenty one.
As was customary, the next day the newlywed couple had to visit their Kuldevi temple. Inspite of her ill health Geet's mother had dressed her with her own hands, plainting her hair and adorning them with yards and yards of mogra strands. She had draped her own wedding saree on her and adorned her with all her own jewellery as she had done on the wedding day. She had given strict instructions to Aryan chachu and Tulsi chachi, who were to accompany them to the temple, to first go to the studio and get a photo of the couple clicked and order a large size copy of it. Aryan chachu had followed Rano's instructions to the word, as all of them were bent on making her last few days as happy as possible, mainly because they felt she never had any joy all her life, being widowed at the tender age of 22.
From there Geet's thread of thoughts went to the wedding ceremony which had been quite a solemn affair because of the circumstances in which it had taken place. Like any other teenage girl she had also seen a lot of dreams and made a lot of plans about her wedding.
Every time she attended someone's wedding she would imagine how hers would be. She'd admire the bride's saree and wonder what colour would suit her. But more than anything it had to be a color her Maan liked. She knew that he was very modern minded. So also, whenever she went with her aunts and mother to buy clothes for Diwali, she always looked at the latest designs and colors of sarees. Even if they went to the jewelers to purchase a tiny earring for her, she'd look around to see all the latest fashion jewellery and dream of wearing those for her wedding.
But when her wedding actually took place, it was an anticlimax. She didn't even get a chance to go to town, to choose her wedding saree. As there were no shops selling silk sarees in their village, she to make do with an artificial silk saree from a local shop. The jewellery she wore were of course of pure gold but old fashioned as they belonged to her mother. The ceremony was so simple that only the closest relatives and a couple of neighbours were invited.
But what followed had been totally disasterous. It was their 'Suhaag raat.' None of her friends were around to tease or tell her what to expect. A couple of her friends had got married, but whenever the unmarried ones asked them about their experience of the 'first night' they never said a word about it, which left the others even more curious. On one hand she was very excited that at last her Maan and she were together. On the other hand she was afraid how he would react because during the whole marriage ceremony he had seemed grumpy and irritated.
On her wedding night, Tulsi chachi escorted her to Maan's room. She had made herself look as pretty as possible in the little time she was allotted. But the chameli flowers bedecking her hair were sure to entice her Maan if not her beauty. Before letting her into the room her chachi's final instructions were "It's a woman's duty to make her husband as happy as possible, so do as Maan asks you to. Do not refuse him anything." Then she whispered something about having left some coconut oil on the shelf if she needed.
Geet was sitting on the mattress when Maan walked in n her heart was beating so loudly, she was sure her Maan could hear it. When she slowly raised her eyes she saw him standing at the window away from the bedecked mattresses she was sitting on, laid in the middle of the room. He didn't even turn hearing her near him. She set the milk glass, which chachi had told her to give to Maan in the beginning, on the table and stood wondering what to do. Then she remembered her mother telling her that as soon as she entered the room she should touch her husband's feet and take his blessings. So she went and fell down at his feet.
Shocked at seeing her at his feet he immediately stepped back a few steps asking "what are you doing?" When she said "Bless me" he irritatedly said "Get up first. What is this nonsense?" Tears rushed to her eyes, but she blinked them away and stood before him with downcast eyes.
Suddenly he sat down on the floor and asked her also to sit down. When she had, he began, "I want to talk some important matter to you and I want you to listen well. Marriage was the last thing on my mind when I came home for this vacation. As of now, I only want to concentrate on my career. I want study further and become a successful businessman. I went through the ceremony only because it was Rano maa's wish and I couldn't refuse because she's in her deathbed."
Without lifting her eyes she said "I'll do whatever you ask me to. I won't be an obstacle in your career. I'll cook, do all the household chores and not disturb you at all. I'm willing to accompany you, wherever you go. Maa said that a married girl's place is with her husband and that I shouldn't worry about her."
Maan "Wait a minute, I haven't finished yet. You are going nowhere with me. Not now, not ever. You'll continue to live here as you always have and I'm returning to Delhi in a few days. I know your mother has always wanted us to get married, but I never thought of you like that. Nor have I ever given you any reason to harbour such feelings for me."
His words shattered her world. She felt as if she was drowning in the deep sea. While he just got up, went and separated the two mattresses that were laid in the centre of the room to the two opposite walls, leaving all the decoration hanging in the middle. "Now go sleep there" he said, pointing to the mattress near the opposite wall.
Normally the next morning everyone would tease the bride and groom, but the situation in the house was too somber for such things. There had been no one in whom she could confide or share what Maan had said. So as instructed by the elders they had gone to the Kuldevi temple to take her blessings and also to the studio to click the photo.
Over the next few days Geet had spent as much time as possible with her mother who kept asking her only one question, whether she was happy in her marriage. Knowing that her mother's end was close by, she put forth her brightest smiles and nodded.
To cover his guilt on the way he was treating Geet, Maan had gone out of his way taking care of his Rano maa. She had been another mother to him. He owed her at least that. So when her end came a few days later, it was very peaceful. As she had no sons, Aryan chachu had done all the ceremonies.
Once the thirteen days ceremonies were over, Maan started hinting about going back to college. He had earlier planned to leave Geet back on the pretext of Rano maa needing her. But now that was not possible. So he had said that she would miss her mother and would be happier with them elders, so should stay back in the village.
But his parents had been very firm that a married girl's place was with her husband, come what may. He had tried several excuses like, he would look for a house and then take her, he would be at college the whole day and she would get bored alone at home, etc. But his father had arranged everything. One of their relatives who had come from Delhi to offer condolences after Rano's death, had promised to find a house for the newlywed couple. So Maan and Geet were to go and stay in their house till Geet got used to the city and that uncle found a suitable house for them. Having no option, Maan had taken her along to Delhi.
In their relative's house they were allotted one room. Maan tried to keep as far away from her as possible when they were alone. Geet had understood his predicament and kept herself busy in the kitchen and other house work. But the hostess had other ideas. She would send Geet with coffee or snacks or something for Maan every now and then. He therefore tried to hang out in the college as long as he could.
When he came home, aunty would tease him about his bride waiting for him all decked up. On top of that they would ask him to take her for a film show or to go out. But he always evaded saying he had a lot of studies to catch up with and all the time sat buried in huge books.
Thankfully within two weeks he had been able to find some accommodation near his college with the help of his friends and they moved there. Just as her thoughts moved to her life in the new house, she was jolted to the present by the chime of the wall clock.
"Oh God!" It was already 8. She had to be in school in half an hour. What was she doing daydreaming like that? She ran into the kitchen and packed her lunch box. Thankfully she had done the cooking the previous evening. But there was no time to change her saree. That wasn't a problem because all her staff knew that she was very fond of silk sarees and often wore them to school. It was as if she was trying to compensate for all that she had missed in the earlier years.
As she picked up her lunch box, she packed some kheer pieces into another box and moved out, locking her door. She went from the rear entrance and handed the kheer box to Ramu asking him to give it to his sir but not to tell him that she had given it. "Tell him you got it from the nearby sweetmart" she instructed him and hurried out to the school.
Maan was as usual sitting in the verandah and reading the paper. He saw her rush out but definitely noticed the pretty silk saree and smiled to himself. Soon Ramu came and asked him come in for his breakfast. Seeing the kheer piece along with the breakfast, Maan asked "is it some festival today? Why the sweet?"
Ramu "no, I just bought some from the market."
Taking a bite of it he relished it with his eyes closed. "Mmm yummy. Give me another. How did you know that this is my favourite sweet?"
Ramu was left wondering "what was this teacher didi upto?" The other day he had seen sir coming out from her house, when he returned from his outing and today she made his favourite sweet and then asked him not to reveal it was from her. Something was fishy!"

Hinal
