JIMMY IS BANKING ON 'BAS EK PAL' By Kaydee - Eye TV India Bureau
Tete-a-Tete
Jimmy Shergil is lesser known than his contemporaries despite his ten years in the industry. But he has no regret and rather feels proud that he has attained an image of a good artist if not of a star. He doesn't miss saying that the stars aren't usually good artists. His recent performance in Naseeruddin Shah's directorial debut 'Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota' has been widely appreciated. Even Naseer wonders why Jimmy hasn't become a star in spite of his being experimental in movies.
Jimmy discounts any report stating that he lacks craze among the audience. He elaborates his point by stating that he has more than eleven movies on hand. Speaking about his forthcoming movie 'Bas Ek Pal', he counters any argument that the movie is based on homosexuality. Jimmy claims that it depicts the changed human mentality in the modern age.
The smashits team met and chatted with him recently in New Delhi during the premiere of his movie, 'Bas Ek Pal' at the recently concluded Osian Film Festival. He elaborates that the story centers around five friends -Urmila Matondkar, Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, Rehaan Engineer besides himself. However, a sudden and unwanted relationship enters their lives bringing a revolution. Jimmy considers 'Bas Ek Pal' as the first movie of his career as its each scene is alarming. "My role is full of shades from grey to black in this movie."
Excerpts of his interview:
What's 'Bas Ek Pal' all about?
The movie's story is full of uncertainties. The audience will be faced with surprises with each scene taking a new turn.
What's your role in it?
I and Sanjay are childhood friends. The situation changes when we meet after a very long time. People watch us with suspicion. We go through difficult times and towards the end the life takes a strange turn and pauses there.
How do you rate your acting skill?
My talent can be measured from my forthcoming movies like 'Train' and Shyam Benegal's 'Chamki Chameli', Onir's 'Bas Ek Pal', Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 'Eklavya', Devang Dholakia's 'Khaffa' and also Rajkumar's movie, besides a Punjabi titled 'Mannat'.
Did you shift to Punjabi because of lack of Hindi offers?
No, this is not true; I have also done a Punjabi movie titled 'Yaaran Nal Baharah' of director Manmohan Singh. Since I am born in Punjab, I owe it to work in Punjabi movies. In any case, I have not shifted to regional films following failure in Hindi movies. Moreove, I do not get my dialogues dubbed.
Is 'Bas Ek Pal' based on homosexuality?
The movie is based on changed human mentality in today's world.
Which movies you think will be your best movies?
As of now, I think 'Bas Ek Pal' is my best movie besides 'Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota' and 'Yahaan'. I think that 'Eklavya' will bring a turning point in my career.

I play a prince of Rajasthan, who falls in love with an Indian girl though she lives in America. What's the story? This Indian origin girl arrives in India from the US. But her lover chases her too. Incidentally, an American girl visits India as a tourist and falls in love with me. What follows? Sorry, I cannot divulge more about the movie otherwise the suspense of the viewers will be over. They will lose curiosity. How did you get this movie? The movie's producer-director Param Gill traveled all the way from the US to Mumbai in search of an actor to play the Indian prince's character. After watching my 'Yuva' and 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne', Gill selected me for this role. How has Pak actor Meera found her connection with the movie? This is a coincidence that her name is there in the title. So, she considers that it is inspired from her life. However, this movie has nothing to do with her. She is creating a controversy for no rhyme or reason. Only she knows what's in her mind. What are your forthcoming movies? Besides this, I am acting in 'Saab Chai Paani'. I am also acting in two southern films, which are being made in Hindi. What's your dream role? I cherish a long desire to play Amitabh's role in 'Deewar'. Which are your memorable movies? They are 'Bhagat Singh', 'Yuva' and 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne'. What's the specialty of the movie? The movie's music is unique as it is provided by two persons. What's your role in it? I am playing the character of a modern mother of Princy, who is kidnapped. Did you do any homework for this character? No, I didn't do any homework. In fact, the role was simple. Moreover, there is no need for any preparation or training while working with a director like Tanveer Khan. However, every role needs hard labor. I liked the story as well as the role. What's the story of the movie? My daughter is kidnapped and my husband played by Rajat Kapoor is asked to pay ransom within a set deadline. This is just like a drama. How is your experience with Tanveer Khan since it was your first movie with him? He is an intelligent director. He has easily completed the movie within three months without any hassle because he had written the story so well. Did Tanveer appreciate your work? Yes, Tanveer used to repeat 'excellent' and 'mind-blowing' after each of my shot. Didn't you hesitate to work with the two movie-old director? This happens with every director - experienced or otherwise. A good director is one who is honest with the story. What's the genre of this movie? This is a suspense thriller and its cast comprises talented artists. Irfaan Khan is a polished artist. Did you feel to be a bit more careful with him? I enjoyed working with an artist like him. I used to seek his advice even after every shot. And, he was good enough to guide me. Are you satisfied with your movies? Yes. However, I shall give more attention to the role which is not bound by gender. I shall like to do men-centric roles. Gender should not come into the way of actors. |

By Kaydee - Eye TV India Bureau
Tete-a-Tete Arshad Warsi has struggled a lot before he reached today's status in the industry. Beginning his career in Amitabh Bachchan's AB Corporation in 'Tere Mere Sapne' and a few others under other banners, Warsi failed to make any impact. However, Sanjay Dutt starrer 'Munnabhai MBBS' brought him in limelight in the character of a Circuit. He had a good chemistry with Sanjay Dutt in the movie. So, he will be seen again with Sanjay in 'Anthony Kaun Hai'. However, this is another thing that Warsi took him in 'Anthony Kaun Hai'. But, Warsi got several movie offers like 'Hulchul', 'Salaam Namaste', 'Saher', 'Chocolate' and 'Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya' following the success of his 'Munnabhai MBBS'. Hence, Warsi is very excited to repeat himself with Sanjay in Raj Kaushal's 'Anthony Kaun Hai'. Sanjay is the perfect choice for 'Anthony Kaun Hai' as he has been for 'Munnabhai MBBS'. Excerpts of his talk with the media: What's 'Anthony Kaun Hai' all about? While 'Munnabhai MBBS' was a comedy, 'Anthony Kaun Hai' is a thriller. The former is quite different from the latter. What motivated you to accept this offer? As soon as Raj Kaushal narrated the story to me, I found it very interesting. I took no time in accepting. What's your character in the movie? I play the character of a forger who forges passports and other documents. I live in Bangkok and wish to turn quick rich. Another important character is Master Madan who is a supari killer. He is in search of Anthony. Sanjay plays this role, and therefore, chases me to a place from where I cannot get out. Do you feel the 'Munnabhai…' hangover in this movie? No, this is not true. But, one thing is there that Sanjay is the perfect actor for this larger than life role as he had fitted the bill in 'Munnabhai MBBS'. Do you really enjoy working with Sanjay and repeat it? Yes, he is a wonderful person. We have a nice comfort level between both of us. In fact, Sanjay agreed to accept 'Anthony Kaun Hai' on my suggestion only. I told him that he is the perfect actor for this movie. He said to me, "Warsi, if you feel that I am fit for this role, then I shall do it. You know very well what will suit me." What are your forthcoming movies? This is going to be my next movie after 'Salam Namaste' and 'Kabul Express'. Do you recall any memorable moment in its shooting? Yes, there is a scene that I shall never forget throughout my life. I was hung upside down from the 35th storey of our hotel in Bangkok during the shooting. Thus, I had a glimpse of the city while hanging upside down. This happens to be the introductory scene of the movie. Besides, we visited the city's prison and took few shots there too. |

BOLLYWOOD BANTER
By Naresh Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau Fear changes Kareena a lot Kareena Kapoor is making friends with her colleagues unlike what she used to do in the past. She was known for her arrogance and ill treatment with her colleagues in the industry. However, she has changed for the better now. Contrary to her earlier practice she is helping colleagues to bag roles. She obliged Konkana Sen Sharma by passing her own assignment in Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Page 3' to her. So, both have grown thick friends. The change in her behavior is attributed to her fear of losing her boyfriend Shaahid Kapoor to any of her colleagues. She is upset with her parents too as the latter aren't willing to marry her with Shaahid. We wish her success in her endeavor though. Who will play 'Mr Fraud'? Who wouldn't like to play a fraud? Ajay Devgan is in the forefront to grab this role. After all, film director Abbas -Mastan has decided to make a movie titled 'Mr Fraud'. However, Abbas-Mastan has announced the name of Sanjay Dutt to play the character of a fraud in his movie. This has upset Ajay's plan though he hasn't yet lost hope to bag the coveted role. Who will play 'Mr Fraud' in Abbas-Mastan's 'Mr Fraud' is still uncertain. Another attraction for playing the role is that the movie will most likely be shot in London. Saroja in feature film jury Renowned Indian film actress Saroja Devi who has over 180 films to her credit will head the feature film jury of the 53rd National Film Awards. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced the constitution of the three juries for the feature film, non-feature film and best writing on cinema sections. The jury for the non-feature film category will be headed by Siddharth Kak, while best writing on cinema will be judged by acclaimed film critic-turned-director Khalid Mohammed. Around 125 entries are competing in the feature films category this year, while the non-feature film section has over 160 entries. Nearly 20,000 minutes of cinema will be watched by the jury before it submits its recommendations to the Government of India by August 17. Tanushree's bid Tanushree Dutta is said to be determined to turn a bindaas anyhow and make a place for herself in the industry. According to sources close to her, she enacted hot scenes with Emraan Hashmi in 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' like sex bomb Mallika Sherawat had done earlier. Thus, she has bagged Subhash Ghai's movie 'Money Money'. However, her performance in this movie is yet to prove her talent as there are other heroines too in Ghai's movie. Besides, she doesn't realize that such incidents have created a problem for Emraan who has earned huge money but has damaged his reputation. If the reports pouring in are to be believed, Emraan has been experiencing a difficulty in procuring a good apartment in the film city following his alleged role of a serial kisser in Bollywood movies! Bobby's uneasiness Bobby Deol is an actor who doesn't like to be caught in camera during his movements with his family. A recent incident indicates this. Bobby was gheraoed by a crowd of his fans seeking photographs with his family members while he was leaving for Bangkok from the Mumbai airport. Bobby didn't like it but still obliged some fans. However, he felt bad when the crowd tried to get photographed with his family too. |

She seems to be on her way out, according to some film critics. Sensing it on time Shilpa has rightly decided to come out of her present genre of glamour and better act in women-centric movies. DON'T LEAVE YOUR MARRIAGE UNATTENDED By Satyajit - Eye TV India Bureau
Critic's I-view
Conjugal bliss is Mother Nature's divine gift to mankind, but how many of us cherish and make the most of it? The deep rooted marital relationships are driven by hardcore rules and regulations of society but love has no precincts, rituals or boundaries. Why do small quarrels, confrontations and unavoidable barbs between the spouses result in venomous confrontations and then follow in separations? Does the relationship lack the eternal bond of togetherness or the comfort level or the gratification level? Has the compassion between them decimated to all-time low? What relevant and important part do elders play in rejuvenating these beleaguered relationships? These are some of the realistic factors the much awaited 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' projects.
The film is primarily conceptualized on the circumstantial repercussions of events when the protagonist is "head over heels" in love with his soul-mate after being married. Karan's tryst with perplexed human emotions continues with 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' ('KANK') where the meek and unexpressive husband (Shah Rukh Khan) suffers from inferiority complex and shelters in the arms of mentally perturbed lovable wife (Rani Mukherjee). Unlike previous family tearjerkers, this film has modern and upbeat outlook with realistic characters infused in complex love saga. The film comes out with statutory warning "Do Not Leave Your Marriage Unattended" and it collages with every character of the film.
According to filmmaker Karan Johar, he has plagiarized these realistic and conceptual facts of life after scrutinizing falling success rate of modern day marriages. The film promises to be a solution of these problems but does it explain broken relationships? The answer is purely individual and situational and may vary from person to person. It may strike a blow to orthodox minds and age-old rituals but works mechanically with the present state of youth genre. An average Indian audience may find the concept alien for its different treatment.
Whether it's a tomboyish infatuation of love struck girl ('Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'), bondage of united family ('Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum') or the eternal love and sacrifice of a dying lover ('Kal Ho Na Ho'), Karan Johar has triumphed them all and returns with much more mature subject with 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna'. The magnanimous success of his earlier releases like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho' makes him the most priceless directorial prodigy of business. He returns with the finest line-up of stars to make it the most awaited mega event of the year. Bollywood has glorious past of family oriented melodramatic flicks ('Sangam', 'Tere Mere Sapne', 'Pyar Jhukta Nahin') in the past. However, they are handful in present scenario.
There is a load of factors that decides the final outcome of the family entertaining endeavors and this is where "Yash Raj Banner" and "Dharma Productions" have excelled. The immaculate "treatment", flawless presentation, impressive performance, melodious and foot-tapping music and fine craftsmanship of cinematography and chorography are all that make it different from others. 'KANK' delivers all with grace and generosity and makes the film worth its gigantic media hype . Candy floss romance, trendy outfits, skyscraping and visually spectacle locations, funky music and thematically heart-piercing performance from the lead actors makes it a "must see show".
'KANK' is an emotional confrontation saga of two families - Sarans and Talwars, driven by destiny and not by relationships. Dev Saran (Shah Rukh Khan), an emotional, self expecting joyful youth who loves to live, work and enjoy his life. Dev's better half Rhea (Preity Zinta) is sassy, ambitious and trendy career woman who has skyscraping ambitions and the skills to achieve it. Dev, an aspiring footballer, signs a deal of five million dollars and Rhea's talent places her in top slot of her company. Kamaljit Saran (Kiran Kher), Dev's mother is a lovable woman and understands his son better than others. The couple has an adorable kid -- Arjun (Master Ahsaas) who prefers violin over football. Samarjit Singh alias Sam (Amitabh Bachchan) is an enigmatic entrepreneur whose philandering habits show his lively and jovial attitude towards life. Rishi Talwar (Abhishek Bachchan), son of Sam, is hardcore party animal with high profile business. Maya (Rani Mukherjee), Rishi's wife, is a sensitive, homely girl who aspires for true love and happiness in life. On one fateful day, Maya and Dev meet and it's a day of Maya's wedding. It turns out into an interesting conversation about love, relationship and marriage but ill luck strikes them. Dev meets an accident and is handicapped whereas Maya marries Rishi out of compromise. After four years they meet again with estranged marital relationships. Rhea's growing success makes Dev envious. Depression and frustration make Dev a pessimist. The feeling of being a loser haunts him every time. On the other side, Maya has inferiority complex of not conceiving child. Rishi's pleasant nature pacifies but she fails to react to his advances. The unpleasantness develops between them and leads to unwanted arguments. Dev and Maya decide to sort out the matter by being each other's best buddy. In hot pursuit to rejuvenate their shackled marriage life they develop an eternal bond of love and togetherness between them. The climax shows them in a whirlpool of emotions where they have to choose between love and a "compromised" life partner.
It may sound ridiculous to an average viewer that the director has tried to narrate the story from the a pessimist attitude. The concept sounds too westernized and will be difficult to digest for Indian audiences. Karan Johar's concept of plagiarizing the concept in New York speaks volume of technical vision, but the theme of the film will sound alien to many. Shibahni Bathija's co-scripting the film has been innovative and shows inhibited shades of traumatized marital relations.
Niranjan Iyenger's dialogues are witty, whimsical and show their class in developing characters in the film. Big B's philandering acts, his one-liners, Shah Rukh's initial confrontation with Rani, Abhishek's outburst at Rani and Big B's speech over the long lost moments of married life are the striking features of the writing work.
Cinematography by Anil Mehta is brilliant at many places and shows the natural and urban beauty of New York. It scores maximum in soundtracks "Rock "N" Roll Soniye", "Mitwa" and "Tum Hi Dekho Na". Farah Khan's finely crafted chorography is an added catalyst, especially in "Mitwa" it captures the emotional moments of Shah Rukh and Rani that form the crux of the story.
Shanker Ehsaan Loy deliver their best musical soundtracks of the year with "Mitwa" being the best of the lot. The background score works with the "tonality" of the script and each soundtrack has relevance with the script. The title track and "Tum Hi Dekho Na" evokes an aura of serenity on screen that was earlier witnessed in soundtracks of 'Kal Ho Na Ho'.
'KANK' has been garnished with the best of acting talents available in the film industry. Shah Rukh Khan has the major role to play and he delivers it with panache. The sorrowful outburst of his being handicapped, accepting love for Rani, resentment with Preity and confrontation with Big B show his versatility as an actor. Abhishek Bachchan matures as an actor with some fine sequences -- his love for philandering father, compassion with Rani and finally his separation with Rani. Legendary Amitabh Bachchan plays the naughtiest, most wicked and the honest character and his face language delivers it all. The witty one-liners with Kiran Kher, conversation at the dinner table and the death scene speak of his flawless acting intellect.
Rani Mukherjee's acting prowess is immaculate throughout the film and shows her command over her emotions and expressions. The perfect timing in the emotional scenes is mind-blowing and gives her edge over her competitors. The actresses have many dimensions to display and she lives up to the monumental expectations. Mickey Contractor's finely garnished make-up is an added factor to her physical grace and charm. She leads the show from the front and gives her best performance of the year. Preity Zinta's upbeat attire of successful woman fits into her body language perfectly. The actress needs no introduction as she has already been an acting icon in films like 'Veer Zara' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho'. Manish Malhotra's trendy and sassy outfits are class apart and depict the designer's outstanding vision. Rani's ethnic wears, Preity's urbanized outfits, Shah Rukh's trendy jackets, Amitabh's fashionable suits and Abhishek's connoisseur looks build the characters well. The designer has his best work in recent times and should be applauded for this.
It may sound boring and irritable for movie buffs to visualize realistic concepts on commercial mainstream cinema format for three hours plus. But Karan Johar's intellect of balancing style with substance speaks volume of scripting, directorial and creative genius. The extra long length of the film (22 reels) may be a discouraging factor for the film's prospects; otherwise the film promises to be visually spectacle. The slow, unorthodox and melodramatic treatment might lead to a difference of opinion but it will have the biggest opening of the year. It will be best in multiplexes and overseas and will have mixed response in the interiors.

GLORIOUS WAHEEDA REHMAN
By S.Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau
In the News Waheeda Rehman is the one actress who has left footprints of her acting talent in the industry. She is still the best bet for Amitabh Bachchan! Though Waheeda began her career in a Telugu film, late Guru Dutt discovered and launched her in 'CID' . Since then she never looked back and shot to fame through her 'Ram Aur Shyam', 'Teesri Kasam', 'Reshma Aur Shera' and 'Khamoshi'. But she stormed the industry by her excellent acting in Dev Anand's 'Guide'. Also, she earned laurels by her extraordinary performances in 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam' , 'Kaala Bazar', 'Chaudhvin Ka Chaand' 'Kohra' and 'Bees Saal Baad'. Her superb acting opposite Guru Dutt in 'Pyasa' tore all records though she fared exceedingly well in ''Kagaz Ka Phool' too. Incidentally, she married with an industrialist of Bangalore in 1974 and restricted her appearances in films. This is another thing that she was noticed in Raj Kumar Santoshi's 'Khakhi'. Her latest appearance has been witnessed in the recently released Aamir starrer 'Rang De Basanti'. She says that she prefers to dance in a movie. | | SHRAVANI NEEDS TO KEEP DARWAZA OPEN!
By S. Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau
In the News Isha Shravani is well known for her rope dance. She performed this not in the distant past in showman Subhash Ghai's 'Kisna'. However, Shravani failed to shoot to fame like Amitabh Bachchan who turned famous by hanging on rope in 'Deewar'. However, Shravani had a sigh of relief on her face after giving her excellent performance in 'Kisna' as the audience as well as the critics had taken a significant note of it. Alas, in spite of all this, the directors and the producers didn't offer her a new role; and she had to wait for long. Only in the recent past, director Ram Gopal Verma discovered her as a heroine for his recently released comedy 'Darwaza Band Rakho'. Though the critics have described her movie as different (hat ke), yet the audience response hasn't been very satisfactory. Anyway, she has played a happy-go-lucky girl in the movie who feels romantic even in her kidnap! However, Shravani is still waiting for a hit film to open the door for her luck in the industry. She needs to keep her door for luck open unlike Ramu's movie that kept the door closed for her in his 'Darwaza Band Rakho'. | | | SANJAY QUITS RITU'S 'SUNGLASS'
By Kaydee - Eye TV India Bureau
In the News Sanjay Suri who has just completed his unusual role in Onir's 'Bas Ek Pal' has, however, withdrawn himself from famous director Rituparno Ghosh' 'Sunglass'. This is significant as the actors vie with each other to get an opportunity to work with such a talented director. But, Suri says that both Ghosh and he have agreed that it's better to quit the movie rather than act in spite of wide differences between them about the concept of his character. The director has his own concept of the character, while Suri widely differs from him. Suri is very happy with funny roles that he has played in movies like 'Jhankar Beats' and 'Shaadi Ka Laddoo'. He likes to work with Juhi Chawla, and that's why he is now doing his third movie with her. He is very choosy about doing movies; he declines offers that he doesn't like. However, he has already played several kinds of characters. His forthcoming movies are 'Kabhi Up Kabhi Down' besides 'Speed' starring Aftab Shivdasani, Urmila Matondkar, Zayed Khan and Tanushree Dutta. Suri is presently banking on his 'Bas Ek Pal'. | | | CELINA: I LIKE TO BE CALLED BIKNI BABE
By Naresh Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau
In the News Celina Jaitley doesn't mind being called a bikni babe following her bikni appearance in 'Jaanasheen' "I take it in a positive way. I wore a bikni in the movie because of its demand and not on my own." At present, she is busy with Subhash Ghai's 'Apna Sapna Money Money', and is lucky to have signed his three movies. "Ghai hasn't yet named them though. But, the shooting will begin soon." Celina has been down for some time but not out. "I am happy with the success of 'No Entry'." She attributes this to her belief in the Gita saying that one should act without caring for the result. "I have been doing my best and I have got success now. She has no regret for not being included among top heroines of Bollywood. "I have been in the industry for a short while whereas it takes a decade to reach that status. I am happy the way my career graph is moving. I am sure that I shall attain the position that every actor desires to reach. I have already reached where I wished to in such a short time." When asked about her role in 'Apna Sapna Money Money' she says, "I play a famous model named Sania Badnam." Did she need to change her look to play the famous model's character? "Yes, you are right. I have changed my look a lot in this movie. You will note it when you watch it." | | | MALLIKA GELS WITH RAHUL, KAMAL
By S. Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau
In the News Rahul Bose has chosen to come out of his art genre films and enjoy playing a vivacious and romantic type of a character. He has therefore undertaken to act in 'Pyar Ke Side Effects'. Besides, Rahul will act in this movie opposite none other than Haryanvi sex bomb Mallika Sherawat. Rahul is all praise for Mallika and explains that he hasn't been affected by heat either at the sets or off screen. However, he has no hesitation in announcing that the chemistry between both of them goes too well. She is just like a next door girl to him. Rahul blasts the myth that 'PKSE' is a remake of 'Notting Hill'. But, he confesses that it's sweet and funny like that movie. He regrets that it is being underrated. In fact, it's a mainstream film. Significantly, Mallika has also signed Kamal Hasan's mega movie costing Rs 300 million. This will be trilingual inasmuch as it will be made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Kamal himself will play hero and that too in ten different roles. Regarding Mallika, he clarifies that she is one of the heroines and not a second heroine as is being talked about in the industry. He has a plan to commence it on 18th this month. | MUSIC REVIEW OF AHISTA AHISTA
By Satyajit - Eye TV India Bureau
Juke Box Himesh Reshammiya, man with golden kismet (lucky cap and enormous talent) hits the floor in flair once again with melodious tracks in a light-hearted love story 'Ahista Ahista'. Like some of his previous successful albums ('Aashiq Banaya Apne' and 'Aksar') this film has low profile star cast with an impressive musical soundtrack. Abhay Deol, nephew of legendary Dharmendra, strikes back as solo hero after been written off in his flop debut 'Socha Na Tha'. Soha Ali Khan, sister of Saif Ali Khan, plays his love interest in the film. She has mixed success and luck with her last release 'Rang De Basanti' being this year's biggest hit. It may surprise her fans that 'Ahista Ahista' is her first film as solo heroine after her dismal debut in 'Dil Maange More' (2004) opposite Shaahid Kapoor. Debutante director Shivam Nair paints this delightful love saga blue with his directorial expertise. Irshad Kamil is the lyricist and not the Reshammiya's contemporary favorite Sameer for this music album that has 15 soundtracks. The album has additional two tracks ("Dil Naiyyo Mane Re" and its remix) from the super hit comedy 'Phir Hera Pheri'. Himesh Reshammiya's lucky mascot music company T-Series has the copyrights of the album. Ahista Ahista: Irshad Kamil poetically conceptualized words "Yaadon Ki Parchaain, Tanhaaiyan, Tumse Hi Hai…" mark the nostalgic phase of romanticism in the highly impressive title track "Ahista Ahista". The loud pitch and nasal twang of Himesh Reshammiya rules the show but with softer and sentimental vocal ambience. The title track encapsulates the slow, stubborn and taciturn attitudes of lover towards his beloved in a melodious way. The electronically generated beats, sarangi strings, melancholic violin and acoustic guitar strumming strikes chord with aggravating high pitch Sufi styling of Reshammiya's singing. The stamp of conventional Pakistan Sufi Pop is dominant where the hard rock feel is amalgamated in poetically inclined lyrics. Once again Himesh Reshammiya has delivered the needful for the title track after the musical success of title tracks of 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' and 'Aksar'. "Ahista Ahista (remix)" arouses extra ordinary sensual feel with loads of feminine sensual whimpers mixed with techno-generated disco beats. DJ Akbar Sami seems to have misinterpreted the sentimental finesse of this number by coagulating sexual flavors to the decent number. This may appeal to small segment of pop genre but it disappoints completely and sounds weird at many places. "Ahista Ahista (unplugged)" is brief rendition of the "mukhra" of the original soundtrack with restricted musical arrangements. It may work as signature tune in emotional moments of the film. Allah Kare: "Allah Kare", an improvised work of fusion summarizes the blessing of Almighty ("Allah") in the heart and soul of lover through meaningful lyrical work. Himesh Reshammiya's penchant nasal twang hits again but with different feel from the title number. The mellifluously rendered "Sarangi" sets the mood in between the "antaras" and "mukhras" of the soundtrack. The rhythmic tabla loop and high pitch guitar strings give the soundtrack contemporary westernized attire that matches with Reshammiya's voice. The extra repetition of "Allah Kare", refined Urdu lyrical work by Irshad Kamil and the usage of contemporary Indian musical instrument give it a traditional Sufi touch. "Allah Kare (remix)" is modern-day club mix remix track with the title of the number "Alllah Kare" repeated with high pitched disco beats. This remix number by DJ Akbar Sami is better than his previous work. There is extra punch to make it rollicking with rhythmic acoustic guitar strumming mixed with heavy drumming and free flowing "Sarangi" work. "Allah Kare (unplugged)" is the most audible version where the lyrics sound meaningful with limited usage of musical instruments. It reminds of some of the impressive works by legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Sufi works like "Allah Hoo" and "Ali Maula". Love you unconditionally: The confirmation of lover to his beloved comes straight from the heart in rhythmic paced sentimental soundtrack "Love You Unconditionally". A fusion based number where keyboard generated electronic beats work in tandem with melancholic violin, light stringed "Sarangi" and high pitched guitar strings. Himesh Reshammiya sings this soundtrack in a husky manner followed by his high pitched loud singing. The lyrics "Love You Unconditionally" may sound weird but it might work wonder in the context of the story and the film. Reshammiya maintains his signature style of singing that has been appreciated in recent times and works well with musical arrangements. The vociferously aggressive tribal sounds and repetitive rendition of "unconditionally" mixed with high pitched disco beats mark the arrival of "Love You Unconditionally". A perfect track to shake a leg on dancing floors is another fine work by DJ Akbar Sami. The additional fast paced Latino tunes make it more upbeat and acceptable by the pop genre. Ishq Ne Tere: After three consecutive tracks by Himesh Reshammiya, its melody time for KK to spell magic with his vocals in the melodious soundtrack "Ishq Ne Tere". This comes out as the most rhythmic and melodious track of the album with KK's voice matched with conventional style of Sufi music. Irshad Kamil's romantically cherished lyrics are additional boon to the number that lifts the spirit of the listener. Jayesh Gandhi's soft "n" husky voice sets the tempo for the song and later KK shows his class by punching lines "Ishq Ne Tere, Kar diya bekhabar….." KK's vocals show his panache of singing sentimental melodious ballads and give his finest work after "Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai" ('Gangster'). The rhythmic Latino style beach music with mild electronic beats sets the pace for the soundtrack "Ishq Ne Tere (remix)". Mood changes to groovy with slow "n" trendy flow of beats that catch listener's attention. DJ Akbar Sami shows his versatility in this number by shifting gears from high pitched club remix to slow paced remix work. GOOD SHOT! Tanha Tere Bagair: The cool ambience of lofty landscaped scenario is felt with traditional "pahadi" music forming prelude to romantic duet "Tanha Tere Bagair". The situational duet is punched with Reshammiya's funky music and has been delivered through the voices of KK and Sunidhi Chauhan. It's an above average number and the first soundtrack with female voice. The rhythmic looping of auto-phonic musical instruments is a repetition to carry the entire soundtrack. KK delivers his best but the number is no match for "Ishq Ne Tere". "Tanha tere Bagair(remix)" is contemporary club remix number with electronically generated beats to set up mood for the dancing floors. The traditional folk tunes are added to give it an ethnic with fashionable remix attire. Aawan Akhiyan (Qawaali): The immaculately rendered "ragas", Sufi styled music; high profile Urdu lyrical work minces together in generating romantically oriented "Qawaali" number "Aawan Akhiyan". Himesh Reshammiya along with Jayesh Gandhi, Hashin and Aftab don their mentor Ustad Nusrat Ali Khan's singing style in describing the feminine grace of beloved eyes ("Akhiyan") in traditional "Qawaali" style. Irshad Kamil's lyrics score the maximum by unraveling the mysticism of pristinely divine eyes of the beloved in a poetic manner. Reshammiya maintains equilibrium between his traditional Sufi music and bunch of singing talents in chiseling out this melodious traditional soundtrack. After "Allah Kare" it's another soundtrack that reminds of immortal Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Sufi singing attire. After the "Qawaaali" track in 'Tathatsu' it's another treat for "Qawaali" lovers and this promises the best musical work in this genre in recent times. Tum Jo Mile: Kunal Ganjawala's husky voice echoes out the pain, pleasure and ecstasy of togetherness in lovable romantic soundtrack "Tum Jo Mile". The rhythmic "Sarangi" phonates the love struck emotions that are coupled with extra elongated auto-phonic instrumental loop to give it a mesmerizing outlook. The hard rock metal feel can be felt through heavy acoustic guitar strumming and loud drumming in the background. The chorus violin adds opera touch to this mellifluously rendered solo romantic soundtrack. The title "Ahista Ahista" is loudly resonated to give it a nostalgic ambience in the soundtrack. It strikes chord with well balanced musical percussions and loud sound impact that are dominating throughout the album. The musical bondage of Kunal and Himesh' last produced "Jab Kabhi" ('36 China Town') has the similar musical flair that attracted listeners. This comes as another sure shot winner from Kunal's affluent singing style that made strong impact with emotionally seductive tracks in films like 'Murder' and 'Fareb'. The added bonus tracks "Dil Naiyyo Manne Re" ('Phir Hera Pheri') and its remix version get space in the album but is no match for the musical eminence the album holds. 'Ahista Ahista' shows musical versatility of Himesh Reshammiya with tracks like "Ahista Ahista", "Aawan Akhiyan" and "Tum Jo Mile" and glorifies his different tuneful faade. The soundtracks are soft "n" sentimental rather than loud and garish but deserves all appreciation for delivering the needful. The music album of 'Ahista Ahista' will be another feather in Himesh Reshammiya's cap and producers can expect promising audio sales in coming weeks. Good Musical show! MUSIC REVIEW OF BAS EK PAL
By Satyajit - Eye TV India Bureau
Juke Box Director Onir's 'My Brother Nikhil' created critical buzz last year and showed movie buffs new facades of filmmaking. It wrote history with experimental treatment and scripting of HIV positive as the protagonist on Indian screen. This was well received at the foreign film awards functions but failed to cash the critical adulation at the box office cash register. Onir returns with 'Bas Ek Pal', a complex emotional story with a team of reliable acting talents in a chaotic emotional saga. 'Bas Ek Pal' is a story of Anamika Joshi (Urmila Matondkar), Nikhil Kapoor (Sanjay Suri), Ira Malhotra (Juhi Chawla), Rahul Kher (Jimmy Shergill) and Steeve O Brien (Rehaan). The film is about one moment ('Bas Ek Pal') that changes the perception of every character in life and towards each other. 'Bas Ek Pal' is city centric youth story where every character is individualistic and enjoys life to the fullest zest. It is rumored that the film is based on famous Jessica Lall case as the film focuses on one untoward incident at a night club. Talented Urmila Matondkar plays the lead role of civil engineer followed by Onir's favorite actors -- Sanjay Suri and Juhi Chawla -- in pivotal roles. The film was screened at "Osian Cine Fan Film Festival" and stole adulations from worldwide audiences. Vivek Philips, music composer of 'My Brother Nikhil' along with new composer Mithoon and Pritam, have composed the musical soundtracks for the film. Amitabh Verma and Sayed Quadri have penned thematically enthused lyrics. The music is trendy. The fun loving original soundtracks can be heard on Tips Music. HAI ISHQ YE KYA EK KHATA : Rhythmic Latino stringed notes and enchanting feminine choruses with high pitched trendy music pump out passions on the dance floors in the soundtrack "Hai Ishq Kya Ek Khata". KK's enthusiastic and animated vocals energize the proceedings and set the floors on fire. The disco fever reaches to its pinnacle when Sunidhi Chauhan mixes her silken "n" raunchy paced voice in the soundtrack. Pritam's music is in top gear and exudes funky paced Latino music that collages well with the lyrics. The soundtrack is highly influenced by "Flamenco" (Spanish Latin Music) for its typical musical arrangements and rhythmic structure. It reminds of Pritam's finest works in film albums -- 'Chocolate', 'Dhoom' and 'Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena'. It starts off with sentimental notes of 'Jal Jal Ke Dhuan' ('Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena') followed by punched disco musical stuff of "Salaami" ('Dhoom'). The soundtrack will definitely find its place in DJ's collections and will enthuse party animals. TERE BIN: Romantically morose sentiments are emoted with soft "n" sentimental musical beats in the extremely prejudiced lovable soundtrack "Tere Bin". Atif Aslam breathes out this sentimental blue ballad in peculiar Sufi pop style. This Pakistani pop prodigy takes Bollywood by storm with super hit soundtracks "Woh Lamhe" ('Zeher') and "Aadat" ('Kalyug'). "Tere Bin" is his third big presentation that comes in the form of a painful melody where a lover emotes out his separation with his beloved. It narrates nostalgic memories to painful sufferings in verses and repeating rhymes. It reminds of Atif's sentimental solo pop hits like "Tehzeeb", "Yakeen", "Mahi Ve" and "Jalpari" (from the album "Jalpari"). New music composer Mithoon's music impresses and carries the emotions of the song with fine usage of instrumental with excruciating voice of Atif. Sayed Quadri's expressive work proves blessing for the soundtrack. Mithoon can be termed as the "find" of this music album and he deserves all adulation for delivering the needful. Eric Pillai's wizardry at the keyboards adds fire "n" flame to "Tere Bin" to make it rollicking soundtrack "Tere Bin (remix)". A typical club mix number with repeated techno-beats mixed in the original soundtrack gives it a hip- shaking funky effect on dance floors. ZINDAGI HOSH MEIN: The unforgettable memories, remorseful setbacks and unfulfilled aspirations are well versed and synchronized in sentimentally rendered soundtrack "Zindagi Hosh Mein". KK along with Zubeen Garg sparks magic in this brilliantly mastered number and emotes out in their conventional Indi-Pop style. Vivek Philips' music lives up to the expectations and generates pathos and pain in the thematically inclined soundtrack. It can be presumed as background song where the protagonist surfaces miseries, misfortunes and remorse with anguish and disgust. Amitabh Verma's lyrical work sums up the emotional setbacks in well expressed phrases and verses. If the number is choreographed aesthetically then it can add up to the composer's musical feat. Eric Pillai remixes once again and this time these are Zubeen Garg's voices that flame the proceedings in "Zindagi Hosh Mein (remix)". Like the previous remix number this too has club mix feel with all high-pitched beats to rock the floors. BAS EK PAL: Soft somber electric guitar strings along with titillating musical beats give sentimental feel to the title track "Bas Ek Pal". KK dominates throughout the album and once again he shows his valor in the title track. A situational soundtrack that echoes the romantically intimidating events of the film! KK's voice is ably supported by Dominique Cerejo in the background and gives it an everlasting resounding impact. The momentous soundtrack by Mithoon comes out as a lovable number that can be played on a delightful evening. It's another remarkable feat by the new composer with some meaningful lyrics. The title track is finely remixed as "Bas Ek Pal (remix)" and gives an ambience of 'Page 3' party feel. The remix soundtrack comes with razor sharp guitar beats and flammable loud bangs of drums and percussions. ASHQ BHI: Nostalgic 70's guitar strings coupled with flavor of Spanish music make the mood merry as poetic verses take over in the soundtrack "Ashq Bhi". KK punches out poetically refined lines "Ashq Bhi Muskuruyae Jab Tum Mile, Mil Gayi Hai Zindagi…" epitomizes the eternal mysticism of love and togetherness. Sunidhi Chauhan's sensuous "n" silken works go in tandem with the slow moving guitar strings and twirling saxophone tunes emanating from finely written lyrics of Amitabh Verma. Vivek Philips' music will positively stir up urbanized youth with soft romantic touch. A good musical show again by the low profile composer with a fine set of lyrics and brilliant vocals. DHEEMEY DHEEMEY : The nostalgic moments of Valentine Day flames up as synchronized saxophone phonates the romanticism in the concluding soundtrack "Dheemey Dheemey". It's once again the immaculately versatile singing pair of KK and Sunidhi Chauhan that rules the show with flamboyance. It reminds of soft "n" sentimental soundtracks of "Archies Romantic Collections" and spells magic with finely improvised vocals and rhythmically orchestrated music. Amitabh Verma's lyrics are pure gem and they coagulate well with the mood and tempo of the soundtrack. Vivek Philips delivers another sentimental ballad that can make evenings delightful and mesmerizing with a passionate feel. A must "hear" soundtrack for youngsters who crave for something special for their loved ones. BRILLIANT! One simple word can describe these romantically affluent soundtracks with fine set of vocals, meaningfully poetic lyrics and promising bunch of talented musical composers. Vivek Philips and debutante composer Mithoon can be termed as musical breakthrough successes after the discovery of Pritam and Shantanu Moitra. Pritam maintains his good streak of promising musical soundtracks and lives up to the listener's expectation. Amitabh Verma adds to the bouquet of promising lyricist and shows great promise with sentimentally delivered words, phrases and verses. 'Bas Ek Pal' is good compilation for city centric genre with a fine blend of instrumental westernized music and it entertains. | | BOLLYWOOD BANTER
By Naresh Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau Sajid's next 'Jaane-E-Mann' Sajid Nadiadwala who has produced several hits like 'Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega' and 'Mujhse Shaadi Karoge' besides others, is busy in his next 'Jaaneman' though its title has been changed to 'Jaane-E-Mann' starring Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, and Preity Zinta. The movie will be directed by Shirish Kunder. Sajid denies that the title has been changed on account of numerology; this is rather to make its pronouncement easier. Sunny in Pak's 'Kaffila' For the first time macho man Sunny Deol, an Indian actor, will play the lead role in Pakistani writer-producer-director-actor Ammtoje Mann's 'Kaafila'. Incidentally, Sunny will portray a complete role-reversal of sorts since he has always played "anti-Pakistani" roles in his earlier films like 'Gadar', 'Border' and 'Maa Tujhe Salaam'. This is to recall that not in the distant past, Pakistanis in the US and the UK, besides Pakistan, refused to watch Sunny starrer movies. Even the US and the UK, distributors had refused to buy films starring Sunny Deol. The two female leads in the film are played by Sana Nawaz and Mona Lisa, renowned film and television actresses of Pakistan will play the female leads. Karisma in production Karisma Kapoor has moved to Mumbai, presumably for her comeback in Bollywood, and certainly not because of any differences with her in-laws. She is trying to bag an assignment with Yashraj Films in the meantime. This time she will not confine herself to doing movies only as in the past. She has a plan to venture into production, and that too with her younger sis Kareena who has already made a place for herself in the industry. If both the sisters join hands, industry pundits forecast a bright future for their adventure. Esha in Ramu's 'Darling' Director Ram Gopal Verma has signed Esha Deol in place of Lara Dutta in his next 'Darling'. Ramu says that Lara left for London on some pretext so he was left with no alternative but to replace her. However, sources close to Lara refute Ramu's version. These sources say that Lara's role was egligible as compared to the movie;'s another star Bipasha Basu. So, Lara decided to quit it. Anyway, this is a gain for Esha Deol who will now act as Ramu's 'Darling'. Ananth is busy in 'Victoria 203' remake Director Ananth Mahadevan has denied that he is faced with any dilemma about his remake of 'Victoria No 203'. Neither Om Puri has quit his movie nor has Paresh Rawal though the latter has sought a huge fee from the producer. Ananth justifies the presence of these two guys in his movie on the basis of research that recommends the two actors who relate with the youths. Ananth is sure to provide a new feel to his movie. Besides, he has got his script of 'Aankh Micholi' back from HMV and handed it over to T-Series to make a movie on it. Lucky Bhumika Singh A new face has entered Bollywood, and has shot to fame even in her first movie. She is young and pretty Bhumika Singh. She was lucky to be spotted by Dharmesh Darshan, director of 'Aapki Khatir', for his movie casting top stars like Akshaye Khanna, Amisha Patel and Priyanka Chopra. Well, she has another plus point too; she is the daughter of Hari Singh, business manager of several stars, including Sridevi and Aishwarya Rai. Suneel in trouble Suneel Darshan who is shooting for his 'Shakalaaka Boom Boom' in South Africa has not been too happy as he is faced with a number of problems. First, his cast seems to be ditching him. His lead cast Sana Panscholi has left him in the midway as she hasn't been too happy with the skimpy dress the director wants her to wear during the shooting. Another female artist, Isha Koppikar, quit because of the absence of promised lead role in the movie. Even Bobby Deol who is the hero, had to leave for his next movie titled 'Jhoom Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' of Yashraj Films, even before the shooting was completed. Besides, it is said that its story is similar to that of Raj Kumar Santoshi's 'London Dreams'! | |
