What's with little girls marrying men double their age on the small screen?

It all started off with the grand marriage of Prerna (Shweta Tiwari) with Mr Bajaj (Ronit Roy) a couple of years ago in Kasauti Zingagii Kay. Irrespective of their huge age differences, the duo clicked very well with the audience, with women going ga ga about the odd, though hot, couple on the small screen.

Clichd though it may sound, Prerna sacrificed the love of her life Anurag, in order to save his family from the evil clutches of Mr Bajaj, who was far too old for her. Now another serial has done it again.

Middle-aged actor Ram Kapoor, or Jay Walia, has married Bani (Prachi Shah), a girl less than half his age, in Kasamh Se... And guess what, he actually wanted to marry someone even younger - that's Bani's younger sister, Pia. But Pia elopes with her boyfriend just before the marriage ceremony, and so Bani steps into the scene to save everybody from collective embarrassment. She marries Jay Walia.

Commenting about his role in Kasamh Se…, Ram Kapoor says: "It's intriguing to have a much older man marrying a young girl. As an actor I don't think anybody should have any inhibition about such characters. Besides, Prachi Desai is a lovely girl. She is a young and brings about a lot of energy to the sets and the show. I am very fond of her. It's good fun working with her."

More recently, another such mismatch was witnessed by viewers of Kahiin To Hoga. Taking everybody by surprise, Aamna Shariff aka the much sought after Kashish, marries a terribly old Tinnu Anand, a business tycoon of her father's age - to avenge her sister's death. The track ended a few days back with Anand's murder. But perhaps it was engaging enough to inspire other script-writers… who might follow suit soon. In which case, we will see more mismatches on screen.
