CHAPTER 4 DENIAL

Madhu came home from her work. As she entered the house she felt an uneasy calmness on the faces of her family members. All were sitting having a serious look on their faces as if thinking about some important problem. For once she thought that may be his father has done something again but when she was about to ask them roma broke the silence, she asked trishna who was looking gloomy.

Roma (putting hand on her shoulder)- are you sure they want madhu to do it?

Hearing her name, madhu was surprised. Till now she was thinking may be her father has done something problematic but it was something related to her. She tried to recall if she has done anything which can make her family upset but couldn't think of anything. she was about to ask them directly but this time it was trishna who replied to roma's answer and thereby stopped madhu from uttering any word.

Trishna (irritated)- what do you think roma…am I deaf…or dumb..or something else….i heard it correct….they don't want me…they want madhu.

Now losing all the patience finally madhu spoke before anybody could stop her again.

Madhu (confused)- will anybody tell me whats going on here??? Why you all are upset?? N who wants me??

They all turned their faces towards the door where madhu was standing, looking confused. Trish looked her upside down. She was wearing a simple salwar kurti and carrying a jute bag full of vegetables, then trish looked to herself in the mirror as if trying to figure out something. Madhu felt weird about it but kept quiet.

Trishna (frustrated)- maa…roma….just look at her…from which angle she looks like a heroine?? And look at me…I have everything a heroine should have…looks, talent, style…then why not me…why her…she is not even interested in this field.

Madhu (shouted feeling frustrated)- for God sake…plz somebody tell me whats happening?? Why di is behaving like this….what is it all about???

Trish (little bit angry)- I will tell you what happened. She narrated the whole story to her-

FLASHBACK-

Trishna was cheerful n happy as always she was reading filmy gossip magazine with utmost interest when her mobile rang. She felt bit irritated as she was reading latest gossip about RK but when it ranged again she stood up to answer it.

Trishna (annoyed seeing an unknown number)- hello, who is this?

Voice over phone – hello, am I talking to miss trishna?

Trish (more annoyed on listening to an unknown guy's voice)- no you are talking to miss world.

Guy over phone(sounding confused) – ji…matlab???

Trish(frustrated)- matlab chhodiye…aur ye bataiye ki phone kyu kiya…main hi trishna hoon.

That guy – actually madam I am varun I am calling from RK's production house, marvel productions. Rk sir have seen your audition and wanted to cast you in his upcoming film. So can you come here to talk, RK sir wants to meet you personally.

Trish (totally surprised, phone slid from her hands as she couldn't believe what she heard she stammered badly)-RK…the RK….want to…cast me…(she realized that phone slid from her hands and picked it up quickly)

varun- hello, madam…are you there???

Trish (excitedly)- yes…I m here…yes tell me when I have to come? (but suddenly her excitement faded as she thought of other possibilities). Hey you are not joking right!! I have not given any audition for his film then how come he chose me?

Varun (assuring)- oh no madam…RK sir actually want to meet you…he saw that audition which you have given for jai chopra's movie which got cancelled later. So can you come today at 10 am.

Trish (excitedly)- oh yes off course…I will be there. (she cut the phone and thanked God for this opportunity then went to get ready)

As she entered marvel productions office, she was greeted by varun who told her to sit and wait for RK sir. She did what she was asked to and felt butterflies in her stomach on the thought of meeting RK face to face. Soon her wait was over and RK came. She stood up to greet him but he looked her in confusion and then took out his phone and yelled at someone to come there immediately. Varun came rushing towards him and stammered badly-" yes sir…what happen sir?

RK (angrily)- you told the girl was waiting here for me…where is she?

varun (looking totally confused )- sir…she is right here (pointing to trish)

RK (shouting)- you dimwit…I wasn't talking about this girl…I was talking about another girl…madhu…her name is madhu…do you get me…now call her (RK left leaving trish disappointed n varun bewildered)

Varun (embarrssed)- I am sorry ma'am it was my mistake…RK was talking about that another girl in the tape ….miss madhu…I assume she is your relative….can you give her contact number?

Trish (feeling sad n angry at the same time)- no need…she is my sister…I will convey your message.

FLASHBEACK ENDS

There were fresh tears in trish's eyes as she finished telling madhu everything. At last she burst out- "why this happens to me all the time? Why destiny plays such games with me all the time?" (she ran inside her room and locked it but her sobs could be heard loud n clear)

Madhu kept standing there shocked. She was feeling numerous emotions of pain, surprise, curiosity, anger right now. Pain of seeing trish like this. Surprise of knowing she was selected for the movie. Curiosity for knowing the reason of her selection and anger on destiny and God for being so unfair with trish. But she got a grip over her emotions and walked towards trish's room and knocked it pleading again n again to trish to open the door, "di plz open the door…plz di…I didn't know anything about it. I am as shocked as you…plz understand….you know I am not interested in this..i will say no to them..plz open the door." But all her efforts gone in vain as trish didn't opened the door. She went and set with roma n padmini in drawing room…again an uneasy calmness spread in the room.

It was only at late night that trish opened the room. She found everyone sitting in the same position and at same place. As she came out of room all looked at her. Now she is looking calm n composed…no more anger …no more tears…a kind of confidence is visible on her face as if she has decided something. She moved towards madhu who was sitting on a chair. Trish set beside her on her knees.

Trish (holding her hand)- madhu…I am sorry for my behavior..i shouldn't have reacted that way.

Madhu (squeezing trish hands in assurance)- its ok di…I didn't feel bad for myself…I was worried for you.

Trish (smiling)- I know…but don't worry I am fine now…first i felt bad when they selected you ..but now I have decided…I will not come in my sister's way.

Madhu (nodding in disagreement)- no di…what are you saying…I don't want to do any film…its your dream…I am happy in my normal life.

Trish (arguing)- you are not understanding madhu….lucky are the people who get break in films so easily..without any struggle…n that too apposite RK…look at me don't you know how much I am trying…but you got this golden opportunity…don't waste it.

Madhu (getting up from chair)- no di…I don't want this…this is not my dream…my dreams are simple…n I am happy with my simple life..i don't wish to become famous actress.

Trish (now getting angry)- oh plz somebody put some brain into her head. (holding madhu from shoulder and shaking her) and what dreams are you talking about huh!...you want to buy a small flat…want to get settle in life n become housewife…are these your dreams??? Oh common wake up sister..these are not dreams..these are compromises every girl makes when she doesn't get chance to fly high.

Madhu (arguing)- I know you don't like my preferences…but plz its my life..only I have the right to decide the priorities…n I don't want to join films….thats it (said with finality in her voice)

Trish (went to roma n pleaded)- plz…roma…at least you try to understand…tell her she is making a big mistake.

Roma (supporting trish)- madhu…she is right…you are lucky, RK has selected you…you will not get such chance again…look at me..i have waited my whole life for this but never got a chance.

Madhu (still adamant)- why all of you are forcing me….i don't like this false showbiz..i don't wanna be a part of it…..mumma tell them na.

Padmini (hugging madhu)- don't worry my child…I am with you…if you don't want to do it..then nobody will force you (looks at trish n roma)

Trish (pulls madhu towards herself)- plz madhu….look, if you will work with RK…you will come in touch with many high profile people in bollywood…ultimately it will help me in shaping up my career…who knows I will get a film too….plz if you don't want to do it for yourself then do it for me….plz

Madhu (looks at pleading trish n felt she is gonna lose this battle)- di…but….

Trish (imploring)- plz madhu…for me…for my dreams…our dreams…just go n meet RK at least…plz won't you do a little favour for me.

Madhu (finally accepting defeat)- ok…I will go tomorrow to meet him…but I can't promise anything …I will take my final decision after meeting him.

Trish (happily)- thank you so much (hugs her)

MARVEL PRODUCTIONS OFFICE

Madhu was waiting for Rk. She was very nervous about this meeting. She was continuously thinking –"what could be the reason of choosing me? I don't even know acting…then why me?" She suddenly remembered her small meeting with RK in the party and got scared, "oh god does he want to punish me for that day and humiliate me in front of everyone…or will he even recognize me?" she was engrossed in her thoughts when she felt a hand on her shoulder, she turned around startled and lost her balance. She was about to fall and closed her eyes in fear of falling when two strong arms caught her from waist. She slowly opened her eyes and found two deep brown mesmerizing eyes were looking at her intensely. She realized that owner of those eyes is none other than RK, she stood straight quickly and looked elsewhere to avoid his gaze.

RK- So miss madhu you came…glad to meet you properly this time.

Madhu (realized from his words that he remembers their first meeting)- woh…I am sorry for that day…it was just…I was…

RK (interrupting in between)- its ok… I didn't mind it….i was only glad to see you madhu (smirks)

Madhu – actually my name is madhubala….only frnds n relatives call me madhu.

RK – madhubala…I see (chuckles)

Madhu (pouting )- what so funny about my name?

RK – no …not funny…I was just thinking…what a coincidence …years ago a girl named madhubala become famous actress n won million hearts now again a girl as beautiful as her, having same name will become a top heroine…seems history repeating itself.

Madhu – it will only happen when I will say yes.

RK – n I guess you are here to say yes only.

Madhu (confused)- I still have doubts….i have not decided yet.

RK (sternly)- then its better you clear all your doubts because RK doesn't like to hear NO as an answer.

Madhu (surprised at his arrogance, mocks him in her mind ," RK doesn't like to hear NO as an answer", huh…what does he think of himself)- can I know…why you chose me? You would have chosen anyone…any newcomer…or forget newcomer any established heroine will be ready to work with you…then why me???

RK (switched on the tv n played that audition tape in which she was explaining that dialogue)- because of this…look at yourself…what an expression n dialogue delivery….you have that spark in you to become a super star.

Madhu (unaffected by his answer)- see…I don't know what have you seen in me …but the truth is that I don't even know the a,b,c,d of acting.

RK (little bit annoyed as nobody ever dares to question his decision n here this girl is going on n on with her questions) – its ok…we will arrange some workshops for you before starting the shooting.

Madhu (surprised at his answer)- huh…you know what…maine aaj tak sirf gossip magazines mein padha tha ki tum sanki ho…but aaj khud dekh liya….you are hell bent to cast me as heroine even if I don't know acting…you will arrange workshops for me….why you can't simply choose another actress.

RK (finally lost his temper and shouted back)- why can't you just get a simple thing in your brain….once RK decides something…its final…nobody dares to open mouth against me….n I think I already told you…I don't take NO as answer….so you will do this film whether you like it or not. Now if you are done with your questioning…here is the contract papers…just sign it.

Madhu (totally dumbfounded by his outburst for few minutes but then regain her composure, infact his outburst infuriated her, "how dare this man talks to me like that…I am not his puppet who will do everything as per his wish")- you know what mister rishab kumar…first I was confused about my decision…but now i have decided, I WILL NOT DO THIS FILM AT ANY COST. (picks up the contract papers) and about this contract… here you are(tore it into small pieces and threw it up into the air and left, leaving behind RK, seething in anger on her action)

RK kept looking at the door from which she went out, he bent and picked up some pieces of contract papers, as if trying to believe that she really tore them. He said to himself while gritting his teeth "how dare she tore the papers….how dare she say no to me?" he again looked at the door, " Miss madhubala…now I will make sure that you will come yourself n say yes for the film". He crumpled the pieces of paper in his hands and threw it away. Then he shouted angrily, "bitto ji…bitto ji…where are you…come here right now". Bitto ji came almost running.

Bitto ji (stammering seeing him angry)- chief…what happen…why are you so angry?

RK (gritting his teeth)- that girl said no to my film.

Bitto ji (shocked)- what!!!...its her loss chief…we will cast another heroine…forget her…she is nothing.

RK (giving deadly glares)- I only want madhu….gather all the information about her..about her life, family..everything…I want every info by tomorrow…got it.

Bitto ji (agreed as he didn't has any choice)- ok chief…you will get it by tomorrow.

RK closed his eyes for a while and madhu's words echoed in his ears again. He opened his eyes with a jerk and said to himself with a smirk, " RK ko naa kaha…I like it…meri film ki heroine toh tum hi banogi miss madhubala"
