Back in Delhi:
Vicky was dreaming again. His eyes were open and unfocused and he had a smile on his face.
"Mr Vishal Singh Khurana, may I know what or rather who you are dreaming of?" His teacher stood in front of him. She knew Vicky well enough now. He was mischievous, lazy and very dreamy but he was still a good student. Unfortunately his habit of dreaming in broad daylight had been contagious now many others did the same. Vicky didn't stir and she did the only thing that she knew helped. She took the stick and hit him on his hand not so gently.
"OUCH" he jumped up rubbing the back of his hand.
"Stop dreaming and start listening. I fail to understand how you intend to pass you exams if you don't listen to what I say." With this she continued and Vicky's friends silently laughed at their friend's plight. He had told them about his dream girl and how he had dance with her. Bad luck for him he didn't know anything apart from her name.
It was Geet's birthday and day off for HGTS. Geet prayed to her Babaji for a lot of things since today was her birthday and got ready. Rano, Rajji, Pinky and Burger congratulated her and all handed her their presents. She opened them eagerly like a small child and jumped every time no matter what she got. Rano wanted to have time to decorate the place properly and made Pinky and Burger take Geet for an outing. Rajji helped her mother and inquired about Maan and his family. She thought back at the party she had attended and how she had danced. She kept hoping of meet the guy again.
"Maan, Vicky, hurry up. We are getting late." Dadi and Archana were pacing up and down the room. It was generally Maan who had to tell the ladies not to waste so much time in getting ready. To their amazement it was Vicky who came down first. He put on a clean and ironed shirt and had even combed his hair.
"Vicky? Is that really you?" His mother looked concerned.
"Why mom?"
"I mean you combed you hair yourself today. There must be some reason'" Vicky blushed slightly and didn't answer. Indeed there was a reason. When his Dadi had told him that he was to accompany them to a birthday party he had refused at first. But when he found out it was at the Handas' he rushed to get ready. Finally he would meet Rajeshwari again.
Maan came down the stairs and all three looked at him. They couldn't stop their gaze from wandering up and down and looking at him from all corners. His attire was something between a sherwani yet it looked suit like. They had never seen this sort of cut before. And he was wearing maroon. He never liked this colour but now he was wearing it. Even a blind person could see that Maan had dressed to impress today and that, too, a very special person. His Dadi and Archana teased him slightly.
"Kya baat hain Maan beta. Kis ko impress karne ki koshish karrahe ho? (My My Maan. Who are you trying to impress, hu?)"
"Koi nahin Dadi, I always look good, don't you know?"
"Yes you do, but today I must say you outdid yourself. Did Geet make this for you?" Maan didn't answer. They reached their destination and Rano welcomed them. The party was not were big but there was a very friendly environment. Maan had often held parties in where he had invited people he couldn't stand or rather had not wanted to be there. But he had his social obligations. Here, though, everyone smiled and laughed and treated one another like family.
Geet came out of her room wearing a pink lehenga. She looked like a little princess who was daddy's pride and made her way to the guest. They wished her and the cake was cut. She first fed Rano, then Rajji and even Dadi and Archana. Maan had been to many birthday parties of friends which followed the same pattern. There was cutting cake, dancing, drinking and then you went home. Rano and Rajji though had planned every thing Geet liked doing with her friends. After the cake, there was a Burger eating competition which Burger won as every time. Then they played a game of pin the tail on the donkey. When it was Rajji's turn she went off too far and pinned the tail or tried pinning it on Vicky who was lost in her again. He screamed and Rajji removed her blindfold.
"Tum? Yaha kaise? (You, what are you doing here?)" Rajji asked him.
"Woh, main tumheri behen ki birthday party mein aaya hu. (I came to your sister's party.)" Rajji giggled.
"Arre budhu, yeh to mujhe bhi pata hain lekin tumhe invite kisne kiya? (Dumbo, I know that much. But who invited you?)"
"Actually main meri Dadi, mom aur bhai ke saat aaya hu. (Actually, I came with my Dadi, mom and bro.)" He pointed at Maan.
"Tum Maan Singh Khurana ke bhai ho? (You are Maan's brother?)", she asked shocked. He nodded. They continued playing for a time. To Maan's surprise the winners all got little prizes from Geet which she had prepared before hand. He wondered where Rano and Geet had got such a heart from, gifting things away when it was an occasion to receive them. Maan just stood a little afar and watched. Every adult was enjoying the games, cheering for their children or Geet and would even occasionally join them. The last game was musical chair. There was place for one more person.
"Maan beta, tum bhi khelo na. Kab se yuhi kade ho. (Maan, you also play. You are just standing like that.)" Rano asked him. Maan refused but Geet just pulled him to the chair.
"Aap bhi na. Meri birthday party hain aur aap kone mein kade ho. Chalo khelo. (Really, it is my birthday party and you are standing in a corner. Now play.)" Her tone was so bossy that he gave in without an argument. The game went on well and one after the other the players lost. At the end there was Maan and Geet left. Maan wanted to let his little Angle win as it was her birthday but he tripped on the wrong moment falling on the chair. Geet had sat down the same minute and landed on his lap. Both looked at each other. Maan had put his arms around Geet's waist to stop her from falling and she had put her arm around his neck. They came back when there was clapping and cheering. They got up quickly and Geet wanted to give him his prize but there were none left. She was sure to have seen it before the game. She searched everywhere but couldn't find it.
"Sorry lekin pata nahin last prize kaha chalagaya. (Sorry, but I don't know where the last prize is.)" She said sadly looking down. Maan came up with an idea.
"Accha? Lekin mujhe mera prize chahiye. (Really? But I want my prize.)", he said like a small boy and made a face.
"Main prize kaha se lau? (Where shall I get one now?)", she wondered loudly. Maan smiled at her innocent way.
He took her to one of the rooms while the others were having dinner and said:
"Ek kaam karo, since you don't have my prize give me this as a substitute." He pointed at his cheek. She pulled it hard.
"Aaah, yeh kya kiya. (Aaah, what did you do?)", he rubbed his cheek.
"Aap hi ne kaha tha. (You only said so, na.)", she said sweetly.
"I didn't mean you to pull it I wanted you to kiss it."
"Hai Babaji, ek paraye mard ko kiss karna, nahin nahin main aise nahin kar sakti. (Oh Lord, I shall kiss a stranger? No, I cannot do this.)" She shook her head vigorously. Maan smirked.
"Theek hain to main hi karleta hu. (Fine, then I will do it.)" He pulled her by her waist and gave her a soft kiss on her cheek. He left her standing and made his way out. Geet felt her cheek and blushed. 'Hai Babaji, yeh kya hua? Kaise hua? Kyun hua?' She came out of her thought when Rajji yelled for her. Maan and his family left with most of the guests. Rajji was glad to know Vicky was her jiju's brother and they exchanged numbers to stay in contact.
The entire night both Maan and Geet thought about the kiss. Geet kept feeling her cheek where she still could feel Maan's lips. She wondered why Maan had kissed her in the first place. 'Geet, yeh bade bade log hain. Inke liye aise karna to normal hain, haina? (Geet, these are rich people. Things like this are normal for them, isn't it?)'
Next morning Geet, Rajji and Rano unpacked all the gifts. Geet never did this alone and hence they sat together. She got new clothes, a few books and other stuff. Rano picked up a little bag that had fallen down and opened it. Her eyes widened when she saw what it was.
"Geet beta, yeh dekh. (Geet dear, look at this.)" She handed Geet the gift card from Beryy's. Geet screamed in joy and danced with Rajji.
"Chalo mamma hum abhi jaa ke kuch khareed the hain. (Come on mumma, let us get something now.)" Rano wondered who might have given it to her. Rano and Geet went to Beryy's first thing after the shops opened. They inquired about the amount on the card.
"Geet, there is no limit on the card. The person has requested me to let you have anything you want. So go and pick something and don't worry about the money." Geet was overjoyed but Rano looked worried.
'Who was this person to be so generous as to spend so much money?' she asked herself. The salesman said he didn't know who brought it. Truth was that Maan had especially requested to Mr Beryy not to mention his name to Geet so he had passed on the instruction to his salesman.
"Belated Happy Birthday Geet" Mr Beryy came out of his office as he saw Geet running around excitedly.
"Thank you Mr Beryy. Look what I have got, a gift card. I can't decide what to buy." Mr Beryy looked past Geet and saw Rano.
"Why don't you ask your mamma? She might know." Geet nodded and pulled her mother along. Mr Beryy watched both ladies deciding about the gift and went back to his office to get two little boxes.
Rano and Geet finally decided on a new sewing machine. This one was made for professionals and had over a hundred features. It would enable Rano to do all the work on the machine in less time and they could finish work quicker. Geet had insisted to buy this one since it would help mostly her mother.
"Geet beta, it is your gift so why are you thinking about me? Get something for youself na."
"Nahin mamma, if you are happy then I'm even happier." Rano kissed her daughter's cheek. She thanked Babaji for giving her such a loving daughter. Mr Beryy saw the exchange with delight.
"Geet, here is a little gift for you and your mamma" Mr Beryy looked at Geet and gave her both boxes. He couldn't bring himself to look at Rano.
"Take it as a birthday present from me, ok." He patted Geet affectionately on the head.
"Aur mamma ke liye kyun? (And why for mamma, too?)"
"Tumhari mamma ke liye thank you gift hai, aakhir unki jaisi intni pyaari jo ho. (This is a thank you gift, for your mamma because you are just as sweet as her.)" Rano blushed at the compliment and both thanked him and left.
Back in the shop they opened the boxes. They had two identical finger huts in them both made of pure silver and with their names engraved in them.
Rajji pouted big time when she retuned for college. Geet had put on the finger hut and showed it to Rajji.
"Maa, mujhe bhi chahiye. (Maa, even I want one.)" Rano gave her hers and said it was a gift so we can't ask for one more. But Rajji gave it back to her.
"Nahin mamma, aap ka haina to aap rakhiye. Main didi ke saat share kalungi. (No mamma, it is yours so you keep it. I will share with Geet.)"
Geet showed Pinky and Burger the new machine. It was alredy doing wonders in the shop as Rano managed to do some brilliant work on one of Rajji's old salwaar kameez.
"Pata nahin ke yeh gift card kisne diya? (I wonder who gave me the gift card.)" Geet wondered. Burger looked at Pinky and said:
"Mujhe pata hain. Maine Maan Singh Khurana ko us dukaan mein jaate dekha. Ushi ne diya hoga. (I know. I saw MSK that day in the shop. He must have given it to you.)"
"KYA, us refund costumer ne? (What, that refund customer?)"
"Refund costumer?" Pinky asked.
"Haan, jab bhi mill ti hu unko refund dilwaana parta hain isiliye refund costumer. (Yes, when ever I meet him, I have to fight for a refund for him, that is why refund customer.)" Pinky and Burger broke out in fits of laughter.
"Geet, tumhe nahin lagta ke tumhe unko thanks keha chahiye? Aakhir itna mehnga gift jo diya hain. (Geet, don't you think you should thank him? Afterall, the gift wasn't cheap.)" Geet agreed
"Lekin mere paas to unka number bhi nahin, phone kaise karu? (But I don'T have his number, how will I call?)"
"Phone kyun? Directly office main jaa ke mil. Maine sunna hain ke pura din wahin hotein hain. (Why call? Go directly to his office. I have heard he spends most of his time there.)" So it was decided.
"Sir, there is a girl here to meet you." Lisa said.
"Does she have an appointment?"
"No sir."
"Then tell her to make an appointment and then come"
"Yes sir" Lisa was going out when Maan asked:
"Who is she?"
"Here name is Geet" Maan shot up from his chair.
"Stop Lisa, call her in." Lisa was confused but agreed.
"Come in Geet" Maan sat on his chair and tried to hide the excitement he felt seeing Geet in his office.
"Sir, main aap se thank you kehne aae thi. (Sir, I came to thank you.)"
"Kis baat ke liye? (What for?)"
"Aap ne mujhe Beryy's ka gift card jo gift kiya. (You gifted me Beryy's gift card na.)"
"Tumhe kaise pata? (How do you know?)" He didn't want her to know.
"Woh meri friend Burger ne aap ko dekh liya tha us din. Toh Thank you. Accha main jaati hu. (My friends Burger saw you. So thank you. Ok, I'll leave.)" She turned to leave.
"Ruko Geet. (Wait Geet.)" Maan go up and closed the door again which Geet had opened.
"Maine tumhe itna keemti tofa diya aur tum mujhe itna chota thank you kehrahi ho? (I gave you such an expensive gift and you are giving me such a small thank you?)"
"Toh aur kya kahu? (What else shall I give you then?)" Maan loved her innocence. He tried to play his game again.
"Last time tumhe jo prize dena tha woh mujhe lena pada, ab wohi prize mujhe dobara chahiye. (I want the same prize like last time.)" Geet looked shocked. He was openly asking her for a kiss again. Not that she didn't like his kiss; he had just given her a peck and nothing else which was ok, wasn't it? It wasn't as if he had kissed her lips or so.
"Ok" she advanced to give him a quick peck on the cheek but just in that instance Maan turned his head purposely and Geet kissed his lips instead. Maan liked the feeling so much that he held her close and kissed her some more. He continued till he felt some wetness on his cheeks. He broke off the kiss and saw Geet in tears.
Geet had closed her eye when she was going to peck Maan's cheeks but her eyes shot open when she realised what he was doing. She felt bad. What would her mamma say when she found out she was kissing some random guy even if he was known to them. Her eyes started to fill up and tears rolled down her cheeks.
"Geet, sorry I was just'" But Geet ran out of the office clutching onto her bag.
"Damit" Maan cursed and followed her. She had taken the next best taxi and left for home. Maan asked his driver to drive to the mall as he anticipated finding her there.
'I shouldn't have just kissed her like this. What was I thinking? She isn't like other girls. Argh' Maan what have you done? You just ruined everything. There she was starting to come a little closer to you and your actions pushed her further away.'
Maan sprinted to HGTS and called for Geet. Rano came out.
"Arre Maan beta, kya hua? (What's the matter, Maan?)" Maan was hesitant in telling her. She treated him like her son and he shouldn't have just kissed Geet.
"Ji aunty, Geet hain kya? (Actually aunty, is Geet there?)"
"Nahin toh, usse kapka wapas aajana chahiye tha. Woh to tumse milni gae thina, KC nahin pauchi? (So, she should have returned by now. She was going ot KC, didn't she meet you?)" Rano sounded worried.
"Nahin, woh aae thi lekin' (She came but')" Maan told Rano what happened and was half embarrassed, half ashamed. Rano smiled.
"Koi baat nahin beta, main samaj sakti hu. Geet darr gai hogi. (Don't take any tension, I can understand. Geet must have gotten scared.)"
"Toh aap ko koi problem nahin? (So you don't mind?)", he asked her confused.
"Tum ho na to theek hain. Koi aur hota to object zaroor karti. Geet shayad ghar pe hogi. Tum wapas KC jao, main Geet ko dekh lungi. (It's you so it's ok. I would have minded if it was someone else. Geet may be at home. You go back to KC, I will see to her.)" She patted Maan on his cheek and continued her work.
In the evening Rano packed up and left for home. Geet was on her bed, clutching her pillow and still crying like a baby.
"Mera baby kyun ro raha hai? (Why is my baby crying?)" Rano asked sitting down next to her and wiping her tears.
"Mamma, woh'" but Geet simply hugged her mother and sobbed some more.
"Geet ab bas bhi karo. Maan ne kiss hi to kiya tha. (Stop it now, Geet. Maan just kissed you.)"
"Hai Babaji, aap ko kaise pata? (Oh lord, how do you know?)" Geet asked her shocked.
"Woh dukaan pe aaya tha tumhe dhundne. (He came to the shop to look for you.)" Rano waited a moment till Geet calmed down again.
"Woh dil ka burra nahin hain. Kya pata tumhe pasand karre isiliye kiss kiya ho. Pagli, accha toh hain, kyun? (He isn't bad from heart. Who knows, maybe he likes you that is why he kissed you. Stupid, that is good, isn't it?)" Rano looked briefly at Geet. Geet wondered about this. 'Her refund customer liked her?'
"Ek baat bata Geet, woh tujhe kaisa lagta hain? (Tell me one thing, do you like him?)" Geet thought for a moment. He was nice she had to admit and the fact that he came running to the mall in search for her spoke in his favour, yet she was a little unsure.
"Theek hain lekin kuch khaas nahin. (He is ok, but nothing special.)"
