The next day, Sunday, Maan had to attend the function. It was hosted by one of Dadi's friends. The main aim was to get youngsters acquainted to each other but Maan knew his mom and Dadi were trying to set him up. To have an excuse for leaving he had called Adi and instructed him to call him saying there was an emergency at work. But to his dismay, Adi walked into the hall shortly after him.
"Adi, what are you doing here? I told you to call and get me out of here. Now we both are stuck." Adi explained how Dadima had made him come here, knowing Maan would try to escape.
Maan had to endure the torture of being taken from one girl to the other. Funny enough neither Dadi nor his mother seemed to like any of them. Usually they praised every girl but today they couldn't stop bickering.
"Maan, tumhe in ladkiyon mein se koi pasand hain? (Maan, do you like any of these girls?)" Archana asked.
"Of course not. I am not going through this again mom."
"Ok, I won't ask you either." She gently pulled Maan's cheek and left. Maan was flabbergasted. There was something fishy going on and he had to find out. His mother and Dadi, even though they loved him a lot, had a habit of turning his life into hell.
One thing that diverted his mind though was that today everyone was not really praising him but his sherwani. There wasn't one guy who hadn't asked him where he brought it from. Maan said that this was specially made for him, with tonnes of attitude.
He thought back at Geet and how she had got him the right fabric, design and fitting. 'She must be pretty good. It was the first time she made something for me and no adjustments were needed.'
On Monday, both Dadi and Archana wanted to meet Geet again. They had liked her very much and the fact that she so easily bossed Maan around made her perfect for him.
Both walked along the shops in the mall.
"Archana, dekho yahin hain Handa Girls Tailoring Service (Look, here is HGTS.)" Dadi said.
They entered and Geet welcomed them by touching their feet.
"Beta, hume aap ki help chahiye. Woh samne wali dukaan seh meri saheli ki beti ke liye navy blue material chaiye, anarkali silwane ke liye. Kya aap jaake leke aasakte ho? (Dear, we need your help. Can you get us some fabric from the store oppostie to yours in navy blue? I want to get an anarkali stiched for the daughter of a friend of mine.)" Archana asked Geet, hoping she would go. Geet nodded and asked for the girl's age. Since there was no friend's daughter, she just made something up. Geet took Burger and Pinky with her and hence the two ladies could proceed with their mission. They pressed the buzzer and Rano came out. She greeted the two ladies.
"Yeh Geet bhi na kaha chali gayi. Maaf karna, meri beti abhi aati hi hogi. (Where is Geet gone off to now? I am really sorry, my daughter will be here any minute now.)"
"Actually hume aap se hi baat karni thi. (Actually, we wanted to talk to you only.)" Rano took Archana and Dadi inside to the private working cum living area. After putting a cup of tea down for both her guests Rano asked for the reason of their visit. Dadi explained how Geet and the others had come to their mansion on Saturday to check the fitting. Rano immediately apologized for Geet's behaviour.
"Ji, maaf karna. Meri beti dil ki acchi hain lekin kabhi gusse mein yuhi kuch bhi boldeti hain. Uski baat ka please burra mat maan na. (I apologize. My daughter is kind hearted but sometimes speaks without thinking when she gets angry.)"
"Arre nahin. Hume aap ki beti ki yahin to baat acchi lagi ke usne mere bete ko suna diya. (Don't worry. This is exactly what we like so much about your daughter in the first place)" Archana said laughingly. Rano looked confused.
"Kya haina ke aaj tak kisi ki bhi himmat nahin hui us se aise baat karne ki. (You see, noone dare till date to talk to him like this.)" Archana paused looking at Dadi who continued.
"Hum dono actually is umeed se yaha aaye the ke aap se aap ki beti ka haat hamare bete ke liye maange. (We had actually come with the hope to ask for your daughter's hand in marriage for our son.)" Rano was shocked. She had wanted her daughter to marry a prince like person but directly Maan Singh Khurana? She had, other than Geet, heard of the Khuranas. They were not only one of the richest and most influential people in this country but also very respectable. Rano composed herself. Dadi noticed the shocked expression.
"Dekhiye, hume to aap ki beti bari pasand hain lekin hum samaj sakte hain agar aap bhi Maan se milna chahengi. Koi sabajasti nahin hain. Agar aap ko yeh rishta manssor nahin to koi baat nahin. (We like Geet very much but I can understand that you might want to meet Maan, too. There is no compulsion. If you are not happy with this alliance, then we can understand.)"
"Ji aisa nahin hain. Aap inte uuche khaandan se hain aur hum'(It nothing like that. Actually, you are from such a rich family')" Dadi understood the reason for Rano's hesitation.
"Beti, meri bahu bhi middle class khaandan se hi hain. Hume class ki nahin, sanskaaro ki ziyaada fiqar hain. Geet humare Maan ke liye bilkul sahin hogi. (Dear, my daughter-in-law is also from a middle class family. We care more about manners and values rather than money and status. Geet will be perfect for our Maan.)" Rano considered this. Both ladies were very nice and Geet would be kept as their own daughter, but she had to meet Maan.
"Mujhe waise to koi problem nahin hain lekin main aap ke bete se ek bar milna chahungi. (I have no problem but I would for sure like to meet your son once.)"
Archana had talked to Dadi about this. They knew Maan would not agree for marriage. It was not Geet but he just said no to any girl. So they had to convince him somehow. Since they didn't want to hide this fact from Rano they told her so. She had just smiled and said that even Geet did not want to marry, but she would do so if Rano insisted. Even Maan might give in. Archana knew that hoping for Maan to give in for marriage is like hoping for snow to fall in June. Yet, they had to try.
A week later Maan had signed a very important deal. He was satisfied that all his hard work had given him such a result. He shared this news with both Dadi and his mom just like every time.
"We have to celebrate this Maan. I will organise a small party for KC staff and clients, what do you think?" Archana said excitedly. Since they had talked to Rano about Geet they had hoped to find an excuse to make both meet. Now this party was a great excuse.
Dadi called all the right places to make bookings and Adi helped in making the guest list. Sasha had heard and offered her assistance but Archana refused politely. She had seen Sasha buttering up Maan and held no high opinion of her. She had let her work in KC because she was their Munshiji's daughter.
Archana called Rano.
"Ji didi'ji hum teen pohuch jaenge. Chinte mant kijie main usse kuch nahin kahungi. (We three will surely come. Don't worry, I won't tell her anything.)" Rano and Archana had grown close over the last few days. Rano called Rajji and Geet and told her about the party they had to attend. Both were curious as to why they were going but Rano simply said that a customer had invited the hence they could not refuse. Both girls got new cloths from their mother and were overjoyed.
The day came and Maan made his way to the venue. He was wearing a black designer suit which made him look even more handsome. Every person's eye was stuck on him as he entered. Just the way he liked it. He shook hands with multiple people, making sure not to be stuck with a female for too long. Out of experience he could tell that they were hard to shake off and especially if they had a drink too many they would create a drama. He was talking to a client when his eyes fell on a creature standing a few meters away, talking to his mother. He called her a creature because he was sure she must have come down from heavens and was not human. Although she was rather petite, her features made her look like and Angel. Long, silky hair together with big hazel eyes and lips like rose petals she had. 'White is definitely a colour to suit her' he thought excusing himself and making his way to her. Archana saw her son advancing and quickly send Geet away. Poor Geet had been send from one corner of the hall to another by either her mother, Dadi or Archana who were all trying very hard to get Maan's attention. Maan saw her move away and followed but his mother stopped him.
"Who are you looking for Maan?", she asked casually following his gaze.
"No one", he said too quickly. Archana smiled inwardly. The next hour or so Maan kept following Geet, not knowing who she really was. To his bad fortune every time he was close to her she moved away.
"Hai Babaji, yeh kaisi party hai. Jab se aai hu yaha se waha, waha se yaha bhaag rahi hu. Itne mein to mera wazan bhi kam hojaaega. (Hey Lord, what sort of party is this? Since I came, I have been running around from one corner to the other. If I continue like this, I will lose a few kgs by the end of the day.)" She looked around and saw Maan. And she had a closer look at his suit. Without hesitation she walked to him and tapped him on his shoulder. Maan spun around and saw his Angel standing in front of him. She seemed rather familiar, now where did he see her before?
"Sir, aap ka to kuch nahin hosakta hain. Yeh aap kya pehen ke aagae? Aisa suit bhi koi kareed ta hain? (Sir, you are hopeless. What have you put on? Does anyone in his right mind buy something like this?)" She turned him around to inspect his suit better. Maan remembered.
"TUM? Tum is party mein kya karrahi ho? (YOU? What are you doing in this party?)"
"Apna wazan ghatarahi hu. (I am losing my weight.)" Geet said absent minded. She tugged here and there and felt the fabric. She shook her head and muttered something.
"Kya? (What?)" Maan asked in disbelief. Did she just say she was here to lose weight?
"Tumhara dimaag to karab nahin haina? (Have you lsot your mind?)" He asked her. She looked up and ignored his question.
"Sir, yeh suit kaha se liya? (Sir, where did you buy this from?)"
"Suit Parlor" he said.
"Wahin toh, waha ka maal kitna kharab hain. Yeh suit dekh ke hi andaaza laga liya maine. (That is why'they have very bad material. I guessed as much from looking at this suit.)" Maan looked at his suit. He had been glad to have brought it and everyone praised him for looking dashing in it and now she was coming along saying it was cheap quality.
"Tumhe pata hain ke yeh suit kitne ka hain? (Do you know how much I paid for this?)" Maan told her the price and her eyes almost popped out.
"Aap ne yeh kya kiya? Us din maine Motu se refund dilwaya aap bhool gae? Arre cheez dekh ke paise dene chahiye. Aap mere saat chalna main aap ko refund dilwaungi. (What have you done? That day, I got you a refund from Motu, how could you forget? You showed pay by quality. Come with me, I will get you a refund.)" Maan looked at her gestures and mimic. First she looked shocked and then her expression changed to determination. She was extremely cute he had to admit. She kept on talking but he didn't listen to a word. All he knew could do was look more closely at her. Dadi, Rano and Archana saw them. It seemed that the first part of their plan was successful, now it came to part two.
Rajji came running to her didi and pulled her along. The dance stage had been opened and both girls were keen on having some fun there. Maan saw Geet moving away and tried following her but was stopped by a horde of girls all trying to dance with him.
Someone tapped on Rajji's shoulder. He was a young guy in a beige suit.
"May I have the pleasure to dance with you?" Geet giggled and gently pushed her sister towards the guy. She was walking along when someone asked her the same question. He had felt uncomfortable following this order as he had noticed the game of hide and seek between Maan and Geet. Both started dancing and he tried not to look up as he was sure to faint by the sight. He could feel Maan's gaze on him and he was really uncomfortable. Maan had seen one of his employees, Karan, walk up to Geet and ask her for a dance. She agreed and now they were gently swaying to the music. He couldn't explain the rage that was building up in him but seeing his Angel with someone else was not acceptable to him. The song ended and he went up to Geet to ask her for a dance.
"Ek shart par. (On one condition.)", she put a condition on. Maan raised his eye brow.
"You have to get a refund for this suit. My friend says you are every girls dream boy; I can not see you impressing them with such cheap quality clothing." She said in a serious but cute way. Maan laughed. Right now he only felt like impressing her and agreed. 'Really, this girl is unique. Here I am fighting off women to dance with her and she is putting on conditions. Then she says I am every girls dream boy but she doesn't even know who I am. And what does she have with this refund? I will ask her.'
"Tell me, why do you keep fighting for refunds?"
"It is my right. Money doesn't grow on trees and one should spend it with care. If you keep paying so much for clothes then you will be bankrupt in a few weeks." Again Maan had to smile. It would take years for Maan to go bankrupt if he spent his money on clothes but he liked her thinking. He worked hard himself hence knew how difficult it is to build up a fortune like his.
"Hmm, nice way of thinking. What is your name?"
"Geet Handa. Aur aap ka? Arre haan aap ne bataya tha lekin main bhool gae. (Geet Handa, and you? Oh, you had told me once but I forgot.)"
"Maan Singh Khurana" it did not have the desired effect on Geet. He remembered how she reacted the first time he had said that.
"Accha. (Nice.)" She just said. 'Accha? What sort of reaction is this?' The song ended and Geet left as she felt thirsty. At the bar she saw all sorts of alcoholic drinks. 'Chi chi chi Babaji, sharab? Ab main kya karun? (Alcohol, so disgusting. What shall I do now?)' She wandered off. Maan wanted to follow but again some girls interrupted.
Meanwhile Rajji was having a great time. Her dance partner was making her dance yet keeping his distance.
"May I know your name?"
"Rajeshwari Handa. And yours?" the guy just twirled Rajji and gave her his most charming smile before leaving and the song came to an end.
'Dhateriki, is gaane ko bhi abhi hi khatam hona tha. Ab yeh kaha gaya? (Oh no, why did the song and just now? And where did he go?)', she thought.
Rano felt like both had talked for a good time and it was time for her to talk to Maan.
Geet was walking towards her when she started swaying and her eyes closed. Rano called out her name but Geet had already fainted when Maan caught her. Maan had successfully shooed off the girls and saw Geet swaying. He didn't know why but he ran and was just in time to catch her.
Dadi and Archana joined them. Maan lifted Geet who was light like a feather to him and carried her to a small room. He placed her on the sofa and rubbed her palm and feet and sprinkled some water on her face.
Rano saw the concern and the care he was showing towards Geet and was glad to have him for her daughter. She didn't need to ask him anything else since his actions said everything.
Geet woke up and explained how she was feeling thirsty. They gave her some water and she left with Rano and Rajji. Maan wanted to drive them but Dadi had already arranged for a car. Maan looked gloomy at the prospect that Geet was leaving.
