Chapter 3: Fitting
"Mamma, mamma." Rano came out from the back room and looked at her pouting daughter.
"Kya hua Geet?(What happened, Geet?)"
"Mamma, dekho na woh customer kehraha tha ke fitting check karne nahin aaega. Ab main kya karun? (Mamma, see na. That customer is refusing to come and check his fitting. What shall I do now?)"
"Kuch nahin. Agar woh hi nahin chahta to hum kya kar sakte hai. Rehne de. Accha yeh batah, kab tak chahiye? (Nothing. If he doesn't want to then we can't do anything. Let it be. Ok, tel me, till when does he want it?)"
"Kal tak. (Tomorrow.)"
"Toh jaldi kaam kar, warna waqt nahin bacchega. (Then hurry otherwise you won't be able to finish in time.)"
Geet was still not convinced. She told Rajji, Pinky and Burger about it and they all laughed at Geet's attic.
"Arre Geet, kya tujhe patta hain keh woh kaun tha? Woh Maan Singh Khurana tha. Har ladki ka dream boy. (Geet, do you even have an idea who he was? He was Maan Singh Khurana, the dream of every girl.)" Burger made a dreamy face.
"Dream boy hoga apni dunya ka, lekin ill-fitting kapde pehenke ladkiyon ko impress kaise karega? (He might be the dreamboy of his own little world, but I fail to see how he will impress girls by wearing ill fitting clothes.)" Geet reasoned. They all laughed some more.
"Didi, agar aap ko inti hi pareshni horahin hain to uske ghar jakar fitting dekh lete hain, kya kehti ho? (If you are so tensed aobut it then we can get his fitting checked at his home, what say?)" Rajji suggested. Geet agreed since she was not giving up on her right to check the fitting.
Next day, when the driver came to pick up the sherwani he met with four girls determined to go to Khurana Mansion. The driver refused down right but when he met with their angry glare and poking fingers he gave in. Lucky enough for him, Maan would not be there.
When they reached Khurana Mansion, all four made big eyes. It looked like the palace of a prince from a fairy tale.
They stood at the door and waited to be called in. Rajji, Pinky and Burger figured out that it might have been a bag idea to come here since they looked a little out of place in their simple salwaar kameez but our Geet was confident.
Dadi and Archana (Maan's mother if you haven't guessed till now) looked at the four girls.
"Dadi, yeh chaar ladkiya tailoring service se hai. Maine manna kiya lekin yeh jabarjasti aagae fitting check karne. (Dadi, these four girls are from the tailorign service. I refused but they forcefully came to get the fitting checked.)" The driver tried to explain.
Archana called the four girls to her. She was touched that they addressed her as ma'am yet touched her feet at the first instance.
Archana took out the sherwani and looked at it. It was a beautiful white colour with little work around the neck, cuffs and the back. Even though it was simple it looked very special.
"Kya yeh aap ne banaya hain? (Did you make this?)"
"Ji ma'am. Silai maine ki hain lekin is peh work meri mamma ka hain. Unse accha work pure sheher main koi nahin kar sakta (Yes ma'am. I did the stiching but my mother did the work on the fabric. My mother is the best in the entire city when it comes to this.)" Geet praised her mother proudly adding cute gestures. Dadi and Archana smiled at this girl.
"But beta, Maan is not home right now. He is in office working."
"But ma'am, we have to check the fitting. After all we provide thorough work. What if it ill-fits?" Burger asked.
"Archana, they are right. Maan should check the sherwani. He is the one who is going to complaint if something is wrong at the end." Dadi called Maan.
Maan was in a meeting when Dadi called. Dadi just said that there is an emergency at home; knowing Maan would come back rushing. Hence it was that after a mere 20 minutes Maan came running towards them.
"Dadi, dadi. What happened? Who is ill? Is it mom? Tell me." He gently shook his Dadi's shoulder. Before she could reply he continued:
"I knew I shouldn't have left mom alone now. It was just two days ago that she fainted. What if'" Dadi interrupted before Maan jumped to any conclusions as to what has happened.
"MAAN, I need you to wear this." She held the sherwani under his nose. He gave it a confused look and then realisation dawned on him.
"You called me to check the fitting?" He asked in disbelief. She nodded and gently pushed him into the nearest bedroom. Maan shook his head since he couldn't argue with his Dadi. When he slipped into the clothes he was amazed. He had till now disliked sherwani's for the plain reason that they were extremely uncomfortable. But this one sat like a second skin. The design was unique, no doubt, and the simplicity of the design was just adding to its charm.
"How is the fitting?" Archana asked, coming in. Maan stood in front of the mirror, looking at him self from all angles.
"Absolutly perfect." He didn't notice that Geet, Rajji, Pinky and Burger were there, too.
"Sir, you have to do this properly" Geet instructed him.
"Lift your arms." He lifted.
"Sit down." He sat.
"Put you arms forward." He put his arms forward.
"And last bend down." He bend and shot back up as Dadi and Archana burst out in laughter. They had known Maan to be a very stubborn person, even since his childhood, who never listened to anyone other than his elders and himself. Now he was obeying the orders of this girls and that, too, in such a funny way.
Maan realised what he was doing.
"You, what are you doing here?" He asked Geet angrily.
"Sir, I am here to check the fitting. Mamma said I should just leave you but how can I? After all only a happy customer will come again, haina?" She said sweetly.
"I told you to hand the bag to the driver, what did you have to come here for? Do you know I left an important meeting for this stupid sherwani?" He yelled at Geet.
"Don't you call my sherwani stupid. If you don't want it I'll tell mamma to return your money. If I wouldn't have helped you, you would be sitting here with a cheap fabric and a lighter wallet. I even fought with Motu to give you a refund and this is how you thank me? Nahin chahiye to abhi ke abhi meri sherwani utarye. (If you don't want it then take off my sherwani this minute.)" Geet advanced towards Maan, one hand on her hip and wiggling her index figure of the other hand very vigorously. Maan backed away. Archana gave Dadi an all saying look. Never had anyone dared to talk to Maan like this. Geet was angry at her work being called stupid. She was even pulling the top bit when Maan held his hand protectively around himself.
"Hey, stop. Tum kya mere kapde utarwaogi? (Are you going to undress me?)", he asked a little scared of the prospect of being seen half naked in front of all the other females.
"Agar meri shewani stupid hain to haan (If my sherwani is stupid then yes.)" Geet said determinedly.
"Ok ok. This is the BEST sherwani ever" he quickly said to save himself.
Geet's mood brightened up in the brick of a second.
"Best hi hogi, aakhir Handa Girls Tailoring Service ka haina. Theek hain toh main chalti hu. Agli baar meri dukaan peh saroor aana, ok. (Of course it will be the best, after all it is made by HGTS. Ok, I will leave now. Visit my shop again soon, ok.)" She made a cute face and left. Maan sighed in relief, this was so close.
Dadi and Archana followed Geet and the others out.
"Beta, what was it about the refund you were talking about?" Dadi asked with interest. Geet narrated the entire situation with full gesture and mimic. Maan was listening to this and closed his eyes with his hands. Dadi and Archana couldn't stop laughing. They sheer idea of Maan being pulled into a shop by a girl to fight for some money was hilarious.
