Chapter 3
Manyata woke up the next morning and was immediately confused. She recalled the events of last night. She had been with Udayveer for quite a while and as much as she hated to admit it, she had partially enjoyed it. But the question was how did she get in her bed? She realized that Uday must have carried her. The thought of it made her smile, but then she quickly caught herself. What's wrong with you Manyata? Don't forget that he is the same selfish person who only loves himself.
She got out of bed determined that her Dadisaa and Udayveer's plan should fail. After taking a quick shower Manyata went to the breakfast table where ' there was no Udayveer today. Good! Manyata thought to herself. But her euphoria did not last for long. She was walking in the hallway to her room when she crashed into him. Udayveer quickly steadied her, before she fell from the impact of hitting him.
"Halkat veda khasmanu khaneya, phir a gaya tu? Aaj phir pura din pakaye ga kya?" Manyata shouted as soon as she saw him.
"Well today you won't be bored at all Princess. In fact I was thinking that today we should go out together. What do you think about it? Uday and Manyata's first date!"
"Udayveer."
"Kya?"
"Teri tabhiyat toh teek hai?" Manyata asked laughingly.
"Not since I found you, no." Uday replied with a serious look in his eyes that made Manyata stop smiling.
"Can't you feel it Manyata? Something different, something special between us?"
"What are you talking about Udayveer? And no, I don't feel anything" Manyata said determinedly.
"You don't feel anything? Then why is it that when I come close to you, you forget who you are; you forget everything'" Udayveer said starting to advance towards Manyata who now felt a little nervous.
He took a step forward and she took one back. The closer he moved, the farther she moved away until she finally hit the wall and couldn't move back anymore. But Uday continued to advance until there was almost no space between them. Manyata found herself incapable of breaking their eye contact. Every logical thought disappeared from her mind when she looked into his dark brown eyes. She felt him slowly take her hand in his own and she wondered why her heart had started to pound so fast. He placed her hand on his shoulder. Then he did the same with the other hand. Manyata was too entranced to move. She wondered what he was about to do until he brought both his arms around her waist and pulled her close, making their bodies bump into each other. And in that moment reality hit Manyata like a jolt. She realized his face was closing the distance between hers and that he was on the verge of kissing her.
Everything was going smoothly, until Manyata, with all her force, pushed Udayveer back.
"Halkat veda! Kya kar rahe tu? Pata nahin kya jaadu tona kar raha hain mujhpe!"
Then without saying another word, and anger etched on her face, she stomped away.
What the hell did I just do? Udayveer immediately rebuked himself. He never intended to go this fast with her. He wondered what would have happened if she didn't stop him at the right moment. He wanted to listen to the voice that was telling him that all this was planned in his mind, but some corner of his heart knew that somewhere he was losing control over his actions.
Manyata felt extremely mad. But more than Udayveer, she was mad at herself. Why was it that her mind seemed to forget every single thought it had as soon as he caught her eyes? How could she give him the power to entrance her like that? She wondered if he was hypnotizing her. Or doing some sort of black magic on her. How else did he have such an effect on her?

They were both about to sit and have lunch with the rest of the family. Manyata avoided him completely and he decided to give her time to cool down. That was until DS reminded them both'
"Udayveer'I thought you and Manyata were going to eat outside today." DS asked.
Udayveer looked at Manyata who was concentrating on her food.
"Yes dadisaa, but Manyata refused to come." Uday replied.
"Manyata, why don't you go? Uday asked so nicely so you should accept his offer beta," DS told Manyata.
"Laikin dadisaa-" Manyata tried to protest.
"Manyata, I'm sure you will like the change as you haven't been out for a while. Just go," DS said again.
Manyata realized that her grandma did have a point, as she couldn't even remember the last time she had stepped outside. At least this would be a nice refreshing change, even though she was going to be with him.
She nodded her head and stood up. Looking at Uday she angrily said, "Ab chalo bhi! Tujhe pata hain na ke mujhe kutto wali bhook lagti hai!"
"Of course Princess. Challo.." Udayveer said looking like he had just won the lottery. He followed behind Manyata who was in a hurry to get this over with.
They both sat in Udayveer's jeep. Udayveer was about to help Manyata put on her seatbelt but she moved his arm away.
"I can do it myself!" She snapped at him. She had obviously not forgotten their previous encounter, Udayveer thought in his head. He hadn't either.
Manyata stared at the people and places as they zoomed by in Udayveer's jeep, feeling like she was leaving them all behind. Udayveer stared ahead and occasionally at Manyata with a smile on his face.
"Udayveer, don't you ever feel guilty?" Manyata asked all of a sudden.
Uday was surprised by her question.
"Guilty about what Princess?"
"I mean look at all these poor people, these houses that are ready to crumble apart, the children who don't even have full clothing, forget something to eat. They are all so deprived and here I am, living in a house whose closet is bigger than their house. Spending money on clothes, jewellery, expensive food, and don't know what else. Why do I get this life and they don't? I am sure there is someone who deserves it more than I do." Manyata said everything that was on her mind in a rush.
"Whoa Princess. Hold on a second. Either you don't talk at all, or you talk so much without taking a breath even."
"Okay my mistake that I was expecting anything sensible from you. Just forget it."
"No Princess. Trust me, I have answers to every question you have. I just wanted you to wait until we reach our destination and now we've reached."
They both got out and headed to the table that Uday had reserved for them in one of the best hotel restaurants. As they finally sat down Uday couldn't help but notice the distressed look on her face. He smiled. His princess was so innocent and sweet. He wondered how she was able to care for so many people at the same time. He would always be impressed with how fast she had changed herself from Moniya to Manyata just for her family. He knew she had never had any interest in being rich or royal. Even now, she was so busy caring for the people on the streets that she had never met, that were powerless compared to her and who could never have any impact on her life. What she didn't realize was that she could have an impact on their life.
"Manyata who told you that you don't deserve to be a Princess or the future Queen? In fact, I have yet to meet someone who would do a better job than you. I know you feel guilty from all this royalty but think about it this way. Is it not better that someone like you is chosen by God to become a ruler rather than someone selfish? The fact that you even said what you said shows how right Dadisa's decision to wait for you was. The day you realize your full power Manyata, you will realize that you have more potential to help those poor people on the streets now than you would ever have as a Moniya. As for being lucky to be a royal, who said that our lives don't have problems. We are born to sacrifice Manyata. Sacrifice for your family, sacrifice for your people, and sometimes even sacrifice who you are. On top of that, you have no privacy. The press follows you constantly and you have to deal with rubbish rumours everyday of your life. Everything depends entirely on your image to the public. You and I can't enjoy some of the simplest joys of a common man simply because we are not common. Then again, your life is only as perfect as you make it Manyata. You can be unhappy living in a palace while someone is happy living in a slum."
Manyata thought about everything Udayveer said. It made so much sense. She had to admit, she gave this guy way less credit than he deserved. Maybe his head wasn't empty after all.
"Thank you so much Udayveer. I needed that since a long time. Thanks for making me feel better." Manyata genuinely smiled at him for the first time. She was thankful for the new perspective to look at things that he had given to her. She stared at him intently as he ordered the food. No doubt he was a confusing person. Their first few meetings, Manyata could tell that he knew how to manipulate situations in his favour, impress practically everyone, and the worse part was that he knew all this and was proud about it. But the more she talked to him, she realized that there was more to his character than she could have ever guessed.
Udayveer decided to order Chinese food so Manyata could try something new. She was reluctant at first but then Udayveer taught Manyata how to eat the noodles using chopsticks. She admitted that it wasn't as horrible-tasting as she thought it would be, but she still preferred traditional Indian food.
"Uday, where's the washroom?"
"Straight then turn left. It's a six minutes walk. Do you want me to take you there?" Udayveer asked.
"No thank you. I can manage." Manyata left.
As soon as Manyata left the washroom, she knew there was something wrong. She felt a creepy feeling, like she was being watched'
Manyata turned around and sure enough she saw Ranvijay leaning against the brick wall with his shades on and a smile on his face.
"We meet again Manyata."
"Why have you been following me?" Manyata demanded in anger.
"You should be happy I was. After all, I just came to save you from the boring company of your boyfriend Udayveer. I am sure we can both do something more fun," Ranvijay said with an evil smile.
"Just shutup and leave me alone!" Manyata turned to leave but he grabbed her hand from behind and dragged her along with him to a secluded place.
"You idiot, **** you and leave my hand you-" But Ranvijay covered her mouth with one hand and pushed her to the wall with another.
Manyata looked around and felt fear for the first time as she noticed that they were at the back of the building which was completely deserted
"Shutup and listen. Either sit with me in the car like a good girl or I promise that you will regret saying no to Ranjivay Oberoi."
"Never!" Manyata shouted at him. That did it. Ranvijay was finally mad and he pushed her against the wall using his own body to stop her from escaping.
"What are you doing? Stop!" Manyata was determined not to let the crazy psycho get his way. Just when he leaned in to forcefully kiss her, Manyata used the moment of distraction to turn her body sideways and elbow him in the ribs as hard as she could. She decided to use what she had learned from her self defense training and poked her fingers in both his eyes, momentarily blinding him.
"You b****!" Ranvijay yelled as he tried to regain his vision and then pushed Manyata away in anger.
The force and anger with which he pushed her made her go flying to the wall. Her head slammed into the bricks and she immediately felt a sharp pain on the left side of her forehead, then the warmth from her own blood trickling down her face.
"Oww," Manyata whimpered in pain. By now Ranvijay had recovered and was even more angered.
"You will pay for this Manyata, big time!"
Manyata with one hand on her head, backed off. She didn't have any energy left as the pain in her head was blinding her. Ranvijay was advancing towards her once more and she closed her eyes from pain and anguish. But before he got to her again, she felt Ranvijay get yanked away from her body. She opened her eyes in shock and her heart leapt when she saw that Udayveer had found her.
Udayveer was angrier than he had ever felt in his entire life. He could feel the hatred and anger for Ranvijay surging through his veins, making his blood boil. Ranvijay was hurled to the pavement with all of Udayveer's force, but he was not satisfied. Before Ranvijay could even get up, Udayvveer pulled him up from his collar and punched his face.
How dare he try to force himself on Manyata!? He punched Ranvijay in the gut. Then kicked him with all his strength. He held him by his shirt then continued to punch him even after he was a bloody mess.
Manyata panicked. If Udayveer, who was blinded with anger, continued to fight, he would end up killing Ranvijay. She ran to his side.
"Udayveer stop it! That's enough!" Manyata shouted to get his attention.
Manyata's voice finally grabbed his attention. He turned to face her and his eyes fell on the blood on her forehead. His hand curled into a fist with fresh anger and he gave Ranvijay a final punch before letting him go. Ranvijay fell to the ground in pain.
Before Manyata had a chance to react to anything, Udayveer grabbed her wrist and pulled her along behind him. He walked to their jeep in a hurry and upon reaching nearly picked her up to make her sit on her seat. He then went and sat on his own seat. He needed to calm his anger which was still there, setting his body on fire. He slammed his hand on the jeep's door in frustration.
"Udayveer!"
When he turned took at her, he noticed her eyes were fearful, not for Ranvijay anymore but because of him. All of a sudden, his anger seemed to vanish, instead he felt guilt and worry. He saw the blood on her forehead and tried not to panic. It was doing weird things to his heart. He felt the urge to take away all her pain, mental and physical.
Quickly Udayveer grabbed the first-aid box from the back of the jeep.
Manyata noticed the change in his eyes as well and started to relax as Udayveer had finally calmed down. His anger had even scared her for a moment.
Uday gently dabbed at her head with the sterilized gauze. She winced in pain and Uday felt something tug at his heart, but he kept going. When the wound was cleaned up and taken care of, he rolled the bandages around her head and then tied it there. For a few seconds Manyata felt overwhelmed after seeing his caring side that she never knew existed. Then her mind started rewinding all the events of today and her eyes started to water.
Udayveer noticed a tear trickle down from her eye and roll down her face. He caught it in his hand. Then he succumbed to his urge to hug her.
"Please don't cry Manyata. This is all my fault. I shouldn't have let you go alone. I am so sorry that all this happened and most of all that you had to see all that. I shouldn't have lost control over my anger." Udayveer said softly in her ears as she hid her head in his chest. He tightened his arms around her.
Manyata felt protected and safe in his arms, but knew she had to let go eventually. After a couple minutes, they both let go. Udayveer smiled and put a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
"Should we go now Manyata?"
"Yes. Let's go. Everyone must be worried."
The rest of the drive home was spent in silence. Manyata again reevaluated what she had thought earlier about Udayveer. Maybe he wasn't as bad as she judged. She knew he had some flaws. He was egoistic at times and even a little manipulative, but what she had just realized was how caring he could be. These past few days, he had made her feel better when she was sad, made her laugh and have fun, understood her feelings and now the biggest thing of all; protected her from harm. She also couldn't ignore the fact that every time they touched, her heart started to pound louder and every thought flew out of her head. She had never experienced feelings like these before and she was left confused.
"Princess we've reached." Udayveer broke into Manyata's thoughts. He helped her get out of the jeep and they both walked inside.
As soon as the family saw the bandage on Manyata's forehead, they all panicked and Manyata and Udayveer were bombarded with questions.
"Everyone first let Manyata get some rest in her room. I can answer all your questions later," Udayveer told them all calmly.
"Jaynandini, aap Manyata ko uske kamre tak chod dijiye," DS told J.
"Ji dadisaa."
As both of them left, Udayveer explained the whole situation to DS, Komal and Brijraj. They were all shocked. Brijraj was extremely angry and threatened to kill Ranvijay, but DS reminded him not to lose his cool.
"Thank god, you were there with Manyata, Udayveer. Thanks so much beta for taking care of her."
"What are you saying Dadisaa. In fact I wanted to say sorry to you for letting Manyata out of my sight even for a moment. It won't happen again." Uday reassured them.
Komal couldn't help but smile.
"We have full faith in you Udayveer and in the fact that Manyata can't get a better husband than you," Komal said sweetly.
Udayveer then bid everyone good night and left the palace.
