16. Trouble
The soft feel of fingers running thru his hair made him sigh with a sense of serenity. The feeling of bliss, which came with the contentment of knowing that he was exactly where he wished to be with the only one he wanted to be with, made him reluctant to open his eyes from the dreamy wakefulness. He wanted to indulge himself a bit more in this enchanting dream of fulfilment.to absorb this sense of belonging, to feel the love in those fingers. Their movement so whispery like those fingers didn't wish him to wake up just yet. As you wish, his sleep dazed mind thought indulgently. As you wish... "Mishti..."
The endearment which came as a sleep slurred sigh stilled Geet's hand over his locks. No..she could see that he was still asleep from the dim light of day break that ventured into the room. His breathing still had the rhythm of sleep.
She had woken up feeling thirsty. They were cuddled together in sleep and when she had disengaged herself from his hands that circled her waist to pour herself a glass of water, he had moved restlessly as if missing her beside him. She couldn't resist snuggling up to him and try to soothe him back to sleep by running her fingers thru his hair. He used to love her doing that. Many a weekend in the past they had spent quiet afternoons together, with him resting his head in her lap reading something while she watched a movie, her hands playing with his hair absentmindedly. He would fall asleep half an hour into the movie. She used to tease him about it and he would claim that it was his 'haq' to indulge his Mishti, who wanted to pamper him.
"Mishti..." his whispered endearment made her heart ache.
"Do you know how much I miss you calling me Mishti?" her words barely above a broken whispers. "It hurts Maan, it hurts to know you no longer remember your Mishti..." her throat hurt with clogging tears. "With the loss of your memory I've lost my identity...I am no longer Maan's Geet," she drew in a deep breath trying to fill in her lungs with air in an attempt to relive the heaviness that seemed to restrain it's functioning. "you are no longer my Maan... where have you imprisoned my Maan , Maan?" her hands skimmed over his face barely touching it as if to find the one she sought. "With each passing day you make it so difficult to hold on to my faith..my faith in our love..." Tears coursed down her cheeks. "Tell me is he still alive in you? Is the love we shared still alive in you, even if it is in the remotest corner of your mind? Is there anything left to hope?" she brushed away her tears that made her weak...Maan hated to see her cry. "How could you demand that Maan? How could you sully our love as a mere physical gratification? How could you insult your Geet so? You who cancelled Ruchika's project because she mocked me? You who stood against your family to give me justice.. you who preferred death to my taking Dev's help?"
She placed her palm against his cheek and pleaded, "Help me Maan...help me find my Maan. You were always my savior, the one who lend me the strength to go on. Please help me now." She broke down laying her cheek on his shoulder and hugged him in an attempt to find solace. But the memories of the past days ..his demand that they have an affair, his attempts to seduce her and the response of her traitorous body, her wish to give in even at the death of his self-respect...crowded in she felt the hot sting of tears which couldn't seem to stop. She hated herself! Furious with her weakness, she raised herself on her elbow and glared at Maan.
"I hate you Maan ...I hate you for what you do to me...I hate you for tarnishing the love we shared...I hate myself for wanting you," she could hear her voice rising and struggled to keep it down. "I hate you for making me hate myself," she whispered furiously. "I hate myself for hoping, for wanting to hold on..I hate you Maan! Do you hear me? I hate you," then turned away defeated "But I hate myself more when I wish to hate you!" she sobbed.
"Geet?"
She jerked back to see an awakened Maan.
Pressing her hand against her mouth to hold back her helpless sobs, she looked at Maan in horror. Had he heard her? Not waiting to find out, she scrambled off the bed and ran to the wash room.
He couldn't concentrate on his routine exercise. The pain in her words, her tormented eyes... He was ridden with a feeling that was unfamiliar to him...guilt. He remembered her wariness, her withdrawal around him. He was the reason for her edginess, the agitation that seemed to have taken hold of her. He needed to talk to her, to apologize.
But she seemed to be avoiding him. He didn't get a chance to meet her until at the breakfast table. Even there she avoided his eyes. Not willing to look at him when she served him food.
"Geet.. I ..."
"Sorry beta, I am late," Dadi interrupted. "Do you remember Gauri, Geet?" she asked as she sat down.
"Haan Dadi, the one whose grandson's marriage we attended a few months back?" Geet stood up to serve her, but Dadi waved her back to sit.
"Haan wahi. She is going to be a great grandmother." Dadi looked at Maan. "She sounded so happy and full of energy, you wouldn't believe she was in hospital last week."
"And who would believe you were about to be hospitalized a couple of months back? Don't you have an appointment this weekend? I hope the reports will be normal."
"Now how will that be Maan? You know once you BP, your health never gets back to normal." She sighed. "I am just thankful that I have you and Geet to take care of me."
Maan's eyes were drawn to Geet. She seemed subdued, pretending to eat rather than savouring each bite with relish as she used to. Even her silence seemed to be drawn out, so out of habit since the last few days. He realised he had gotten used to her constant chatter with Dadi at meal time. Her withdrawal touched a chord in him.
"Beta, who juice toh pass karna."
Geet was still playing with her food.
"Geet.." he called, she still seemed to be lost in herself.
He touched her hand and she jumped in response.
"Geet pass the juice to Dadi."
"Sorry!" she moved the jug towards Dadi. She tried to withdraw her hand from under his which he caught. But he refused to let go.
"What happened, beti? You seem sad." Dadi looked at her. "Is it because Maan is leaving for States today?"
"Leaving? Today?"
She raised her eyes to him. He was caught by the expressions that flashed across it, before the shutter fell on the ... surprise, panic, sadness and relief. Relief! It filled him with unreasonable anger. "I forgot what day it was," she mumbled.
He got up in a huff, "I have a meeting in the morning. You better hurry if you are coming with me."
"I was thinking I will take an off today..."she began.
"Why? Any urgent work here?"
"Since you are going away... Packing..."
"Nakul will see to that." He cut in. "Be ready in 15 minutes. I need to talk to you 'instruct you about a few things before I leave. So you better hurry."
Geet stood up with an apologetic look towards Dadi.
"Maan, let her finish her food."
"I didn't see her interested in food. She can have a sandwich from the canteen if she feels hungry."
With that he walked off expecting her to do to his bidding.
Maan walked into the room fuming. Here he was wishing to apologize to her and she was trying to ignore and evade. He paced the room. He heard her phone ring. The insistent ringing irritated him. He was about to answer it when she came in and grabbed it from his hand. He watched her check the number and then put the phone aside without answering it. Anxiety evident in her action. She turned to open the cupboard and the phone rang again. She tensed, looked at the phone, then just ignored it.
"Aren't you going to answer that?"
"No." she said looking at the number. "You said you were in a hurry to leave."
"That doesn't mean you are not even allowed to attend a call." He said irritated. Did she have to turn everything into a fight?
When she selected her clothes and walked towards the dressing room. He was looking at the files standing by the cupboard, when the phone rang again. He was fed up with her attitude. He connected the phone putting it on speaker.
"Geet.." came a man's husky voice. Then a romantic song played,
bheege hont tere, pyaasa dil mera
lage abrr sa haan mujhe tan tera
jamke barsa de mujhpar ghataayein
tuhi meri pyaas tu hi mera jaa
kabhi mere saath koyi raat gujaar
tujhe subah tak main karu pyaar ha
oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh o
Geet ran back to grab the phone from him and disconnected it.
"Why did you answer my phone? Did I ask you to?" she asked angrily. But he could hear the underlying panic in her voice.
"Who was that?" he asked.
"I don't know." She retorted. He recollected seeing her getting agitated in similar situations in his presence lately. He had assumed it to be because of the tension between them.
"How long have you been getting such calls?" he asked, angry that someone had dared to call his wife.
"A few weeks," she murmured realising the time has come to bear the consequence of keeping this from him.
"A few weeks!" he bit out. "You didn't think it necessary to tell me that that you were getting crank calls." His demanded.
"I... I am sorry" she looked down unable to meet his eyes for she knew she was wrong, she knew he had the right to know, whatever the excuse she might like to give.
"Sorry?" he forced her to look at him by tilting her head back with a hand under her chin. "Why did you, my wife, keep this from me? Isn't it your duty to tell your husband wen an unknown man calls her with love songs?"
"The songs started only lately and so did the flowers, "
"Flowers?" his voice was thunderous. "Tell me!" his command brooked no argument.
"I've been getting flowers since last week, a single rose with love.." she gulped at his angry hiss. "notes." She hesitated.
"Why do I think there is more? Tell me what else."
"Since the last few days the call is always followed by a message." She mumbled. As if in cue her phone beeped the incoming message and she shuddered.
He took the phone from her hand and read the message, "Wear the red Anarkali for me today. You look so hot in red." He threw the phone away, breathing harshly. Colour drained from her face, the stalker was becoming bolder as each day passed.
"You..." he began wanting to rave at her. "Do you know what this means? He knows you...he is watching you." He saw her shivering in panic and he couldn't go on. What use was it, anyway? She had been holding all this inside her for so long and from the way she was reacting it was clear she became aware of the stupidity of keeping the matter from him. He ran his hand thru his hair in frustration.
"I hope you informed the police, at least." He went to sit beside her.
She jerked her head once and he saw the silent tear that slid down her cheek. Seeing her fallen expression he wanted to enfold her close and reassure her that he would make everything all right. He would hunt down the one who frightened her.
He put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close. "Don't worry I will take care of it now." He felt her stiffen, but decided to let it pass though it irritated him. "What did the police say?"
"He keeps changing the sim so they are finding it difficult to trace him." He brushed his hand down her hair.
"That must be why he is getting bolder." He felt her edge slightly away from him. A subtle movement, still he noticed.
"Mahi was saying the same."
He stood up in a flash to glare at her, "You told Mahindra about the calls?" he demanded icily. "Yet you didn't deem it necessary to tell me, your husband?"
"No it was not like that...I didn't tell him. He just noticed and ...and asked." She tried to explain. Meaning she considered he didn't notice her being in trouble, he thought. "And I desperately wanted to seek advice..."
"Still you didn't come to me." he accused.
Damn it! She knew she had to tell him and she would have too if he wasn't after her with his enthusiasm to get her back into bed.
"Yes I didn't and I said I was sorry." She flashed back. "I would have told you if you hadn't been at me with your demand for an affair. How would I feel like approaching you with this trouble when you yourself were troubling me."
"So you are saying I am like this stalker." His voice had a dangerous edge to it. "That all I do is trouble you?"
She shook her head, "I didn't..." he raised his hand to stop her.
"Okay then, I won't 'trouble' you anymore. In fact for an entire week you don't even have to look at me. We will discuss about our relation when I get back." He took the files from the table and moved towards the door.
"Maan please..."
"I don't want to argue with you...I am getting late for the meeting. You can take the day off as you wanted."
At the door he turned to glare at her, "And since you seemed to have more confidence in Mahindra and no trust in me to solve your troubles, I won't 'trouble' you with my interference."
a teeny weeny face off...but on the wrong reasons... a trailor before the movie? what will geet do now? don't u want her to be able to handle the situation( stalker) herself? after all she is our sherni...
