Day 2 Part 2
'But did a fantasy ever last?Did a bubble ever stay intact?
Did the world ever stop intruding?
'Titaliaya," Buaji's voice called from outside the door, providing the intrusion that Khushi and Arnav dreaded.
Khushi stirred and looked up from her vantage point on Arnav's chest and he was already looking down.
For some time they were lost in the magic of each other. Khushi did not want to be the first to break the contact and neither did Arnav.
She looked beautiful, he thought.
He looked so good, better than Salman, she thought, openly gazing at him.
Then each remembered that they had a point to prove to the other. They had to show the other that they did not care!
"Khushi can't you stop tossing and turning. Look what you did. You were using my chest as your pillow." Arnav roared. Khushi looked away.
"And how about you? You were strangling me," Khushi said. Arnav looked away.
But both of them realized belatedly that they were happily cradled in each other's arms. Khushi tried to pull back and Arnav let go.
"Tomorrow get some extra pillows. We will put them in between us," Arnav issued an order.
"Absolutely," Khushi said defiantly.
"And don't fight with me for the bathroom. I am the guest and you should treat me well," he said
"Hmph. I will use the outside bathroom. You are not the guest, but the damaad," Khushi shot at him and stormed away.
When he came to the living room there was no one. But he heard voices in the kitchen.
He moved towards it when he heard Khushi saying,
"Haan amma. He may sound angry and may be very grumpy, but he is very nice to me. He always takes care of me. Cares for all my needs. Even I haven't taken such good care of him here. But he took such good care of me since our marriage, especially because I was alone and needed love and comforting'"
Arnav stood rooted to the spot. Why? For what reason was she painting such a good picture of him? Wouldn't it be easy on her if she told the truth about him to her family. Gradually build up how mean he had been to her, so that she did not have to lose face with her family if the marriage broke? Or was she trying to save her family the pain.
"He is good at heart Amma.He has never had anyone but Di and he had always worked since he was young. So he is different, so don't misunderstand him," she continued.
Arnav went back to the room and started orking on his laptop. But his focus was on Khushi's words. Why did she stand up for him in front of her own family? His family he could understand. But hers? And that too praising him? He was puzzled.
In the afternoon as he was tapping away on his laptop, Buaji slowly made an appearance, "Babua tomorrow you can take our guest room to work. It is cooler. I will clean it up. We haven't used the room since''since our PG left post Diwali," Buaji said suddenly uncomfortable at the thought of Shyam.
Suddenly Arnav's head shot up. Khushi's PG. Wasn't he the guy she was engaged to? Now what was his name? He racked his brains. Buaji hastily went away. She had felt Arnav had made some mental connection between the PG and Khushi. His face had developed a sudden frown.
The rest of the day went by with the Guptas feeding him and killing him with attention. He was relieved when night came again. Khushi barged in with two more pillows.
She refused to talk to him as she was upset with his lack of friendliness to Amma, Buaji and her neighbours. He clearly showed he was just tolerating them. Khushi kept the two pillows in between and turned the other way, showing her back to ASR.
Arnav came to the bed. He wanted to see her face. But could not.
When he was with himself he could not lie. He wanted to hold her. Kiss her'finish the unfinished Diwali kiss'make her his wife in the true sense'and hold her till dawn'but'.
He sighed.
So he lay awake. When Khushi's breathing became even, he slowly removed one pillow. He needed to rest his arm, he reasoned.
He removed the second pillow. He needed it to rest his feet, he reasoned.
And in an hour Khushi was back to his arms and this time, Arnav lay awake holding her'.
