"Aakash, how the HELL does a newspaper know about Khushi's arrival when no one in this whole goddamn family does? Payal lives here for God's sake...why didn't she tell me Khushi was arriving at Delhi last night? You think I would have let her go stay with some friend at Lakshmi-nagar? Why the hell wasn't I told?" Arnav was struggling into his clothes at the speed of light, as Aakash read the morning's news item out to his furious brother.
"Payal didn't know, Bhai. She just found out that Khushi's staying at Sarita's house ten minutes ago. I just thank God the goddamn Page 3 people didn't publish Khushi's exact location, or she would have been mobbed by the media-as it is, there are reporters waiting outside for you, Bhai. This story has snowballed-- its being covered everywhere-tv, radio, channels, news. Take the side exit, I had your car parked there."
Arnav threw Aakash a grateful look as Anjali strode in, waving her copy of the newspaper in his face. Little Naina, as always, was in her arms, and Arnav took a moment to kiss his niece before focusing on his furious, concerned sister.
"Get her home to us. Now, Chote. Since that article broke yesterday, we have been practically barricaded in the house here, the phone wont stop ringing, even with security and high walls keeping the reporters out. God knows what she faced in Lukhnow. Now she's come to Delhi, she is going to be eaten alive by them. Tell her she has to come straight back to Raizada House, at least until all this hysteria and media attention blows over. Beg her if you have to, it is for her sake even if she doesn't want to see any of our faces again. She cant stay at Lakshmi-nagar, she will be harassed every time she steps out of her house, I am sure it wont take the media long to find her there. Meri kasaam dena, uske paye parna, girgiraana, Chote. Do whatever you have to do. But you get her back here!"
"Where do you think I'm going, Di? Even if she wont...be my wife, again..." Arnav's voice cracked, as his sister wiped her eyes, and Aakash looked away. He swallowed the ever present lump, and continued.. "Even then, I owe her some protection; this is my fault, all of this. I don't know who's doing this to us, but she needs to be here. I'll make her understand its for her own sake...I'll bring her home" Arnav promised.
He strode out, ducking through the servants' entrance to avoid the mob outside their main door. As he drove through the streets of Delhi, he found himself shaking, and he had to pull over twice to calm his nerves. He was going to see her. She had come, and he was going to get to look at her, speak to her, maybe touch her hand, have her sit in his car, maybe get to bring her home. Maybe, just maybe, he would be able to look at her face, and not see hatred there, not see contempt. She had come. Why, he had no idea. To scream at him, to hurt him, who knew, after all that he had done to her, who knew why. But she had come. That was enough.
**********************************************************************
Sarita left them alone in the living room after serving some tea to the silent, nervous man and his quiet wife. Khushi played with her braid, and Arnav took the opportunity to stare at this woman who haunted him daily, and who he had not seen for five months. She looked paler, exhausted, he decided. He didn't like the fact she had lost weight, he didn't like the braid, or the old kameezes. He wasn't happy about the fact that he made her nervous and she wouldn't look at him. But most of all, most terrible of all was how he hated the missing sindoor, the absent mangalstutra that no longer entwined her neck.
She looked--diminished, like there was a part of her that had existed, and that now no longer breathed. Arnav felt his own heart constrict in his chest as he realized once again what he had stolen from Khushi. Her identity, as his bride, as a bhabi, as a daughter in law. He had reduced her, robbed her, because she could not go back to being the old Khushi ever again, no matter how she tried. She was Khushi Raizada, no matter how much she tried to pretend otherwise. And because of him, she was a wife without a home, a husband or a family. Diminished.
He cleared his throat, the sound was unnaturally loud in the still room. "Tum thik ho? " he asked, then instantly berated himself for starting the conversation with an idiotic comment like that. She didn't look fine. She looked..broken. Khushi looked at him, looked away, and nodded. "Khushi.." such a long time since he has said her name out loud to her...he savored it, the musical sound, feeling her name resonate in his heartbeat. He tried again... "Khushi, please, tumko ghar jaana hoga, you don't know how the media will hound you if they find you here. Coming to Lakshmi-nagar was a big mistake, you should not have come here, but now that you are here, listen to me. You, need to go home."
Khushi nodded vigorously. This was something she had been prepared for, she had wondered how to address his concerns, and was glad that he was talking to her so clearly about them. This Lisa woman would surely hate her presence in Delhi. Khushi had read the news of her own arrival in the papers with horror just this morning. She burst into speech, just as he ended his--"I know, Arnav ji, I saw the coverage yesterday, and this morning, and I wont stay longer than I have to!" She tried to control her voice, tried to not let a quaver of pain enter her tone-of course he would be eager to see her leave! Why not, he had a new life, a new love.
To reassure him of her intentions, of her plan to not interfere between him and his Lisa, for the first time in fifteen minutes, Khushi looked straight at husband. "I am going to go home once our work is done, Arnav ji-my ticket for Lukhnow is open ended, I can extend it, if needed. But if you have brought your papers, I can sign them and go home by this afternoon's train before any problems happen. It should be quite quick, hai naa? Since I don't want anything? Please believe me, I am not here to cause a scene or create an issue for you and...her."
It took the great businessman Arnav Singh Raizada's steel trap, brilliant brain a full two minutes to understand what the hell she was talking about. By the time the truth had dawned on him, Khushi had gotten up, fetched a pen, and was now sitting down again, looking at him expectantly. "Arnav ji, where are the divorce papers you need me to sign? Do we need to go to Mr Mehta's office for them?"
Arnav looked at Khushi, aghast, all his words, all his rehearsed pleas deserting him. He needed her to stop talking, he needed her to listen to him, he needed her to stay. And she wouldn't. She would leave, she would board a damn train and head home if she found out there were no papers, no divorce, no Lisa Kampadia to marry him off to. So Arnav took a deep breath, looked at Khushi full in the face. She was still asking him if Mr Mehta, his lawyer, had those divorce papers for her to sign.
Arnav couldn't trust his voice. It was as if his heart had wedged itself in his throat-the next response, his next actions would be critical. But she was looking at him, her own eyes wide, questioning. She needed an answer. Lukhnow loomed in his mind, where she would return, this time to never return again. Arnav panicked, so, he did the only thing left to him.
He nodded. Yes.
