Femme Fatale

Chapter Nine:

Who am I?

Rules for agents 8:

We are on a stage...acting

--------------------------

Both had sparkling eyes as they contemplated their latest plans. This mission was to grab the chocolate chip cookies that were hidden away in the pantry. Not that anything could be hidden from the little imps.

"Lift me up on your shoulders" Pari started to plot, "then I can reach the top shelf"

Maan was a tad bit apprehensive, not that he could admit it, "Alright…but don't fall!"

As always those very words acted as a curse, causing the little girl to tumble down, breaking glasses along the way.

"Ouch!" Cried out Maan as Pari started sobbing. Both had cuts down the arms and were bleeding. That is how Rajiv found the two.

He tried to console them as he bandaged them up, "Look darlings, you'll always have this as a sign of friendship" as he pointed towards the scar.

With wide eyes they realised that they had matching scars along the arm, Maan's right side and Pari's left.

"WOW!" Both giggled excitedly, forgetting the pain. Turning towards each other they smiled, unknowingly strengthening the bonds.

It was a mark to keep till the end of their days, a sign that joined them together.

-------------------------

There is something so eerily calm about violence to those in power, the seductive lure that both tempted and repelled.

But she was no stranger to its addiction and necessity.

She was standing the balcony of her apartment, well temporary apartment and one of many. As an agent money was no issue for her, she had everything she needed.

The view that met her eyes was stunning, clear sight of the city as well as the hilly areas beyond it. But she was too preoccupied to appreciate the small pleasure. Indeed she had never been allowed to ponder on the beauty of the world, for she was surrounded by darkness.

Some people lived blessed lives with happiness and normalcy but she had been deprived of that from an early age.

Well, at least the security at Khurana's has improved, the boss thought with satisfaction, even though there are still holes. Agent 2 will be able to look after the mansion, hopefully.

She had even had a GPS tracker on Maan's car as well as on his laptop, which he took everywhere. With that she could track him and make sure that he was never out of reach. She knew that most people would consider it a breach of trust or privacy but as an agent she wasn't one to hesitate.

But I need to find out more about the people after Maan.

Maan, she smiled as she thought about her boss; a contradiction of arrogance as well as a humility. He wore power the way other men wore watches, with cool authority and lack of care. But despite all that power he still managed to interact with his silly secretory and other employees without being condescending.

Only someone who knew her very well, and that was a handful of people, would notice the tiny frown on her face as she thought about his frustration at her teasing him. He is too easy a target, despite his charms with women.

Almost subconsciously her hand went to rub her left forehand, tracing the scar that was no longer there but would always be part of her memories.

As an agent she had to be perfect, so she had the scar fixed and it was symbolic of the vestiges of her past that she had given up. Yet it seemed that her mind wasn't willing to forget where she had come from because it was habitual to trace that area where the scar had been, recalling her baba an her childhood friend.

In a moment of emotional weakness she wondered whether he remembered his friend, Pari, or unlike her, had never thought about the past. But just as quickly she shut down the emotional nostalgia, such emotions only blind an agent from their job and distract away from the mission.

So with cool determination, she set out for another day at work. Going back into her room, she opened her secret box, which was hidden under the plank on the floor and got out her knives.

She strapped them onto the harness onto her legs and another one onto her waist, to which she then attached knives. But as she wore her salwar kameez, they were hidden and her disguise was complete.

She turned to face the mirror, pondering on her reflection. As always she looked like a simple girl, nothing like the deadly assassin she was. A false identity and a facade.

But then again, who am I? After all a true agent has no identity.

---------------------

Maan was frustrated with the lack of progress with his project, feeling angry at how slow people worked compared to his own pace.

For days he had been trying to get the companies to finalise their offers for the PAR 1 deal, but it seemed that they were all over eager with the desire to gain it but were also struggling to muster up the astronomical costs.

And as such things were getting delayed, even though his own people were as always on time and efficient.

Lazy bums! He thought with both amusement and annoyance. Out of habit, his hand went to rub the scar on his right forearm. It was gesture that he always did when he was pondering on a fact or trying to plot something.

Right on cue, his pest of a secretory came barging into the room without knocking or announcing herself, causing Maan to give a resigned sigh.

"Sir, here are the new numbers for the project" She handed over the latest details. "I've already started planning the part for the project, as you requested" As always she looked unfazed by her massive workload, doing everything much quicker than anyone could.

"I don't want any mix ups with this" Maan raised an eyebrow, wanting her to understand the importance, "A lot of important people will be coming and I don't want our reputation to go down"

"Aye Cap'n" She saluted him, baffling him with her usual random quirks. "Full steam ahead"

"Geet I am serious!" He gritted, "PAR1 project is very important and we cannot risk jeopardizing it"

Geet rolled her eyes, "What I would like to know is why it's named that? PAR1 doesn't even make sense"

Maan's face tightened with an emotion that was hard to decipher but one that was rarely seen on his face. Yet he answered her question with forced calm, "It's named after a childhood friend of mine"

"Friend?"

"Pari" His voice held no emotion but in reflex his hand went to touch the scar, a permanent reminder of her. Even with the years that had gone past, this mark would always remind him of her, a friend for a short time but a friend she would remain.

Geet looked right into his eyes, wanting to gauge his feelings, "She must mean something for you to name your most important project after her"

He didn't know why but he continued to talk, baring a bit of his emotions, "She is dead, in fact she passed away many years ago."

Even as he said the words he saw something flitter across Geet's eyes, gone within a second. "I am sorry" His usual upbeat secretory said in a subdued tone.

And something changed at that moment, Maan realised that he had started to trust her.

Trying to lighten the mood Geet changed the topic, "Sir why don't we have a dress up party"

"Geet this is a party for some of the most important people in the world!" He rolled his eyes, secretly enjoying her amusing comments.

Ignoring him, she continued on, "Sir you could dress up as a Telly tubby….maybe a pinky Telly tubby!" Her face glowed with excitement even as Maan choked with rage.

"Well, why don't you dress up as the joker? Obviously you are insane enough!" He retorted back.

"Why so serious?" Geet said in a mock deep voice, emulating the Joker before laughing her head off.

Crazy girl, Maan thought with amusement.

-------------------------

It took a while but Maan realised that Pari was special. She could do things that girls her age shouldn't be capable of, such as doing his homework.

It was a startling discovery to realise that the younger child could do work at his level and that too easily.

"You are too young for this!" He spoke imperiously, in his usual MSK attitude. "How can you do this?"

A confused Geet smiled, "It's so easy. Can't everyone do this?"

Some intuition told Maan that he shouldn't tease her about this, instead settled for saying, "You are just very smart"

But a part of him continued to watch her, fascinated with her intelligence.

Geet seems to be a mystery to me!!!
Well at least Maan remembers his friend!!!
He knows that she was special and that will go a long way to help Maaneet's relationship...
If ever there will be one...
which considering you may or may not be likely!!!
