Part 14 ' Friends? Are you freaking kidding me?
Before Khushi could sleep over it she had a job to go to, to which she had to rush for she had continued to sit on the table meditating about Arnav's proposal for almost an hour. It was Armaan's urgently incessant honking that brought her back to the Earth. Hurriedly she collected her stuff from all over the room, snatched her heels and ran down in her rubber slippers. Panting and out of breath she sat in Armaan's car to give him a few whacks on his shoulder, "Where is the fire that we have to go put out?" she spat out at him.
Laughing at her exasperation, he told her, "My dilemma, Ridhimma needs a ride, so jani do you think I am going to make her wait for me? No way!" he finished sticking out his tongue at her, "By ' the ' way'What delayed you? Normally you are the one texting at the rate of 2 texts per minute to find out when will I reach your place?" he looked closely at her face to find any signs of fatigue that may reveal a sleepless night, he found none at which he sighed gratefully.
"Umm well Actually Arnav came in the morning with breakfast," she said and turned to look out of the window quietly.
"Oh so Arnav came, how nice!... Khushi! I am not a dimwit that you so audaciously take me for!" he said irritated.
"He came, we ate, we talked, that's it!" Khushi gave a quick run up of the events further incensing Armaan who just took a sharp breath in and stayed mum.
Breaking into a smile, she pinched on his shoulder, "Don't be sad girlfriend!" this time she stuck out her tongue at him, "To make a long story short, he had offered to start from scratch and asked for friendship," she finished.
"Hmmm and what did you say?" he asked quietly.
"Nothing as yet, I've asked for some time before I say anything! What do you think I should do?" she asked.
"Well it is your decision to make, as far as I am concerned, I will stand by you," he smiled at her.
As soon as Armaan had dropped off Ridhimma and Khushi at the hospital, he set off for Arnav's apartment. He rang the door bell and the door was opened a couple of minutes later by a very sleepy, disheveled Arnav. Armaan at once felt guilty for waking him up, "Sorry mate, didn't realize you might be sleeping at this time," he apologized as he entered the apartment only to stop dead in his tracks. The apartment looked as if a mini Tsumai had excused its way through it. At a loss of words he simply looked at Arnav questioningly.
"Oh well, I wasn't in the best of spirits last night!" Arnav replied sheepishly, combing his hair with his fingers while hopping and skipping through the mess to find a place to sit.
For a couple of seconds Armaan completely forgot why he had landed up in Arnav's apartment and just looked incredulously at the extravagant chaos around him. It was when Arnav handed him a can that he came out of the shock.
"I won't even ask for explanations here," he said looking around and sitting on a bean bag precariously place between two tables that had been toppled some time during the night.
"So, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company?" Arnav drawled lazily as he sat back completely relaxed.
"Your early morning visit to Khushi's hostel.. what was it about? I have heard "friendship" is on the cards now!" Armaan said making quotation marks with his fingers.
"yeah so?" came the same lazy drawl from Arnav whose had a hammering headache by now. And he had narrowed his eyes for better focus.
"Listen, is this one of your famous plans? Please do not deal with Khushi as one of your deals that you have to have!" Armaan came directly to the point.
"I never explain myself to anyone! However, you are virtually Khushi's family right now so I'll let you know that it is nothing like that at all!" Arnav stated very straightforwardly, he then emptied the contents of the can in his mouth and continued more gently, "I want to start fresh with Khushi, I want to try and leave the past behind us and make a completely new relationship with her," he explained with a faraway look in his eyes.
"Do you believe in soul mates?" he asked literally making Armaan lose his balance and say in disbelief, "What?"
"Exactly! I didn't either'." Arnav said when Armaan cut him to add, "No I mean I do, but you? I never thought you believed in it, didn't you think love n all is nonsense?" Armaan asked bemused.
"Yeah, I didn't but having gone through what I did, I do now''well kinda! You see, if you knew a fraction of how we, Khushi and I, met and how we reacted to each other, you'd never believe that there is anything like love between us even if both of us say it together to you. Despite all the bitterness, battle of wills, fighting, we fell in love. What do you say to that? The only thing I can come up with is that there must be some truth to the soul mate crap all romantic books and movies bank on!"
"Whatever!" Armaan snorted, "what I am warning you against is trying to bamboozle her into accepting you!" he said.
"Bring your high-handedness a notch or two down Armaan, ok?" Arnav stared at him, "What you need to understand is that up till now we have just been fatally attracted to each other, now I want us to fall in love with each other, and friendship is the basis of all love! God do I sound corny or what!"
Armaan tiredly rested his head against the plush cushions and said, "We need to know each other for who we are, I need to now her, I cant function properly without her. I don't know a lot about Khushi and Khsuhi doesn't know anything about me, she has met only the hard unrelenting side, but not me!" he sighed going back to his past for a moment, "I will introduce her to the Arnav Singh Raizada I am, I was before'''.." his voice trailed off as he thought of how he had totally covered his real self in a hard shell and kept a very hard, unyielding and distant facade for the world.
Raising his eyebrows as if to say whatever-that-means-i-don't-know, Armaan said, "Good luck then!" and got up to leave.
Arnav straightened out on the couch he was sitting on and fell asleep the moment his head touched the cushioned hand rest.
"This is why I m hot hot
This is why I m hot hot
This is why
This is why
This is why I m hot hot" blared the radio while Khushi ironed her laundry. A day had passed since the breakfast she had with Arnav and she had thought only about him and what he said. His suggestion had left a big question mark in her head. That she loved him, she was sure of. But can she reconcile to his volatile behavior, his undying urge to control everything and everyone around, his harsh decisions? She couldn't, she didn't want to. But! There was always this huge, colossal 'BUT' hanging in the air, will she be able to live without him, will she be able to control what she felt whenever she saw him. Life with him she knew not much of but without him, but without him, was she happy?
Right now she was trying not to think about anything and had therefore put the radio on full blast while she swung her hips to the beat. It took her a good five minutes to realize that her cell was ringing. Without turning off the radio she answered the call.
"Where the hell were you?" said Arnav livid with anger to add after a pause, "What the? What is that you are listening to?"
"Nothing, Nothing," she quickly turned the radio off, "yes?" she said briefly.
"How many times are you going to sleep over my suggestion?" he asked very calmly.
"umm I was just thinking that, if we are starting from scratch, then don't we need a reason, some circumstances to meet, then get to know each other and only then we'll become friends, nai?" Khushi completed slowly.
Controlling his trademark "What the!" from escaping his lips, he said, "Khushi do we really need that?" he said softly, huskily, taking away Khushi's breath for a while for she hadn't heard such an endearing tone from him for a long time now.
Fighting back the tears she said, "no we don't need to," she said forlornly, "mmm your suggestion is okay I guess,"
Arnav was quick to pick up the melancholy in her voice, his heart going out to her, wanting to hug her, comfort her, letting her know he'll always be there for her, that he was ready to do whatever she wanted. However, he didn't say much but hung up after a quick good bye.
Arnav slumped tiredly on the bed and lay on his stomach with his head resting on his folded arms. His sleep seemed to be completing the number of hours it had missed; he had spent the entire day on the bed or in its periphery. He was deep in thought; he wanted to give Khushi whatever she wanted, but how?
After a few minutes an idea finally made its way to his groggy mind, as a slow smile spread on his face. He picked up his cell and made a call.
After the call he got up to stretch himself luxuriously and hit the shower.
