Hey guys..
Please wish my friend HIMA(dewdropred) on her birthday.
CHAPTER 16:
"Kuch nahi Annie. I was just thinking about Geet."
"What? Don't you like her? Mujhe to bahoot acchi lagi. She has that innocent air around her which makes you want to just protect her from everything. Veerji ke liye perfect hai na?" said Annie happily.
Naintara pondered over Annie's words, "You know Annie, yesterday when both of them came unannounced, I was shocked. How can Veerji get married, that too without telling us? You know how against marriage he has always been. To fir ye sab achanak. Mujhe kuch theek nahi laga."
"Par Didi…"
"No! Wait! Hear me out. I liked Geet at first glance itself. Duniya dekhi hai humne Annie. Tumse thodi zyaada. Insaan ko parakh sakte hai. What you said about Geet is right. That brand of innocent charm which surrounds her is like a beacon to all males in the vicinity. But Veerji was never one to fall for such things. Then why this sudden marriage? Pehle mujhe laga koi aisi waisi baat to nahi hai….then realized its Maan Veerji! Master of controlling his emotions!" she said rolling her eyes that made Annie laugh. "Then a thought occurred, has he been somehow forced into this marriage? Woh HP wale Darji na, mujhe kabhi acche nahi lage. Mana ke unhone Veerji ki liye bahot kuch kiya hai, but Veerji is blind to his faults. I don't know why but somehow I just don't trust that old man. His eyes have something which I have never been able to define." Naintara turned serious at this point and went silent for some time, as if sifting through some memories to get a clearer picture. "When I came to know that Geet is his granddaughter, I thought ke kahi Veerji ne ye sab koi karz utarne ke liye to nahi kiya? His attitude yesterday was not that of a happy groom! But after what you saw today morning, I am slightly mollified. At least things are all right between them. He was just being his normal grumpy self!
"Haan Di! Yaad hai hum Veerji ko humesha chidhate the, ke aap pyaar bhi ghusse me hi karoge kya?" Annie broke in with a giggle making Naintara smile.
"Haan Annie! Lagta hai tumhara prediction sahi tha. Bechari Geet!" Both women giggled at this. " Baki sab humne uparwale pe chod diya. Geet is, as you said, perfect for him, mano ke unke liye hi bani ho."
"Aur kya pata, Veerji ko sach me pyaar ho gaya ho!" she laughed at this unseeming possibility.
"Haan Di, sunne me kitna ajeeb lagta hai na! Humare Maan Veerji! In LOVE and MARRIED!"
"I just hope koi aur baat na ho! I really think Geet is perfect for him and…."
"Kya baat chal rahi hai tum dono ke beech me?" Dev barged into the kitchen and hugged his wife from behind and whispered a "Missed you" in her ears which Annie was sharp enough to catch. As he nicked a piece of French toast which she was making, Naintara hit his hand while Annie teased, "Kya Jiju! 5 min ke liye hi Di aapki nazron se door thi, lekin jaise aap behave kar rahe ho, koi bolega ki jaise do saal baad mil rahe ho!"
"Now what is my fault in this Sali sahiba? Can I help it if your sister is so irresistible?" Dev countered shamelessly while placing a peck on his wife's already red cheeks.
"Chup karo tum dono!" whined an embarrassed Naintara glaring at her unrepentant husband. "Kaam karo!" she muttered and ordered both of them to take the breakfast to Maan's place and set up the breakfast table.
"Waise for the record, I agree with both of you! Must say Maan is one lucky chap!" Dev said cheekily before leaving, earning himself another glare from his wife.
====
The said lucky chap was prowling angrily in his bedroom, recalling the morning incidents, wiping off the excess water after taking a shower. He clenched his fist hard thinking back to his temporary moment of insanity in the bathroom. No matter how hard he tried, his senses refused to let go of the aura of her surrounding him. It hadn't been a day, and already his room smelt of lavender, it smelt of her! The fresh dewy innocent feel of her skin against his was tantalizing his senses whenever he closed his eyes and try as he might he couldn't get her out of his mind.
On the other hand, Geet was not faring any better. She thought about their intimacy in the bathroom while cooking the halwa, feeling a faint flutter just at the thought of his touch. "Babaji aap ye kya kar rahe ho mere saath? Kya wo sach me badal gaye? Did he change his mind about us? Lekin abhi to wo wapas naraz ho gaye."
"Ek to pehle se hi wo ghussa hai, abhi to meri khair nahi! Dusht danav mujhpe hi chadega! Mano ki maine unhe kuch kiya hai. Maze to sab Naintara di aur Annie ne liye, aur sazaa abhi zaroor mujhe milegi! Babajiii!" she whined looking upwards and joining her hands she prayed, "Bacha lena!"
Looking down at the sweet she was preparing, she added the dry fruits and folded them in. But all the while her thoughts were on what to do to appease her husband, but nothing came to her mind. Thank god her Mamiji had insisted on making her learn how to cook! Her mamiji's words suddenly came back to her. "Geet remember, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. A well fed man has more chances of humoring you than one who has an empty belly!"
"Haan Geet! Sahi to hai! If Maan likes your cooking maybe he will start liking you too. Haina? If you want him to accept you as his wife, you will also have to take a few steps towards him na? Jaise aaj subah unhone liya." Her innocent mind conjured up the simplistic way of solving her problems. "Bas abhi unhe ye halwa pasand aa jaye! Fir mai Naina Di se pooch ke unka favourite lunch bana loongi! Haina Babaji? But will that be enough?"She wondered. "Geet puttar, at least start! Think of the results letter! For now concentrate on his stomach! Baki sab apne aap theek ho jayega!" the mention of "stomachs" made her thoughts go back to what had happened in the morning, escalating her heartbeats again. She touched her skin lightly which still bore the marks of his ministrations. The heady feeling she had felt in his presence surrounded her, making her feel twitchy, craving for it once more.
She shook out of her stupor when she heard Dev and Annie's laughter in the living room, making her realize that she had nearly burnt the halwa in her daydreaming! She blushed at her thoughts, making her way out to help them set up the table.
====
Since the small house did not boast of a dining table, they all sat around the small coffee table, enjoying their breakfast.
"Wow! Geet, bahoot accha hai"
"Haan Geet. Really tasty. Isse accha halwa maine kabhi nahi…" one glance at his wife's raised eyebrows shut Arjun up. "Mera matlab hai after my wife's obviously!" he finished flashing his wife an adoring smile.
"Aur hum?" Naintara broke into the conversation in an irritated voice making Arjun groan at his big mouth while Dev laughed at his plight.
"Arre Naintara, app to best banati ho…Annie ka number, appke baadh aata hai. Aakhir aapne hi to isko sab kuch sikhaya hai", which appeared to mollify his sister a bit who was acting cheesed off with her husband for some reason.
Geet was happy that everyone liked the halwa. Well, all except one. She glanced sureptiously at him from under her lashes to make out whether he liked it but was disappointed to see his plate devoid of it.
Annie saw Geet's disappointed look and following her gaze, she prompted Maan. "Veerji aapne nahi bola ke halwa kaisa bana hai! Kha ke jaldi bataiye na kaisa hai, aakhir specially aapke liye hi to banaya hai bhabhi ne."
Maan who was lost in his own world, was not concentrating on the conversation around him, but was thinking of ways to stay away from this temptress who he suddenly found all around him. He was jerked out of his thoughts when he saw everyone looking at him expectantly. Especially one pair of eyes which were looking at him, hopefully waiting for his verdict. His anger returned and he felt a sadistic pleasure in wiping the lingering smile from her face by his, "You know I don't like sweets Annie."
There was a pregnant pause at the table while everyone digested his words. If anyone thought it rude, they attributed it to his normal aloof persona. He had always been like that. Not giving in to the notions of polite conversation and always saying what he felt out aloud, without mincing his words.
Dev looked at Geet whose face had fallen like a pile of bricks. Geet was an open book; her expressions were so easy to read. Whatever she felt was there on her face, no pretenses or fabrications. Just like Maan in some ways. But her compassion, which shone through, would never let her knowingly hurt another soul. He felt sorry for this child woman who had to bear his brother in law. Not that Maan was bad, he was a gem of a person, but difficult to live with.
To change the topic Dev grabbed the bowl and ladled a heap in his plate while saying "Great! You don't know what you are missing Maan! Not that I am complaining, as I get more of this delicious halwa for myself!" smiling at Geet who tried hard to smile at him, while she felt like she was breaking down inside. She had seen Maan's eyes when he said it, and realized that he had said it with the intention of hurting her. And hurt her, he did! If he still didn't want to accept her, what was all that in the bathroom? With moist eyes, she looked at him, the question in her mind clearly visible in them. Maan looked away, unable to bear the reproach and the hurt in them. He took some time to gather his defenses before looking at her nonchalantly, disregarding her painful stare and sipping his coffee.
"Haan haan Bhai! aap apni wo kadvi coffee hi pejiye! Yuckk!" Annie made a face and everyone started laughing.
Geet hid her hurt well, forcing down each morsel, and smiling to keep up a brave front. It was good that her airy fairy dreams of the morning had disappeared just as early, she consoled herself. At least she knew now where she stood. No where! A tear escaped her eye which she wiped away before anyone could notice.
But unknown to her, the tear had managed to pierce one more boulder in the wall around someone's heart.
After delivering his bomb, Maan sat back keeping up the uninterested charade, while feeling guilty for having wiped her smile off. But his guilt disappeared with a force when he heard Naintara offering Geet his mother's kangans.
"Ye lo Geet! Ye na Anjali Aunty ke hai! Aapne itna accha meetha banaya. Tumhara shagun." She handed Geet a pair of kangans, making Maan look up in anger.
"Naintara, ye kangan Ma ne tumhe diye the. Tum ye Geet ko kyu de rahi ho!"
Naintara smiled at her brother, "Veerji, in pe humare nahi bhabhi ka haq hai! Maa ne to hume sirf sambhaalne ke liye diye the, ke jab unki bahu aaye, tab hum unhe ye saup de."
"Par Naintara…"
"Naina Di, rehne dijiye na…Ma ne aap ko diye the, app pehno ya mai, kya farak padhta hai!" Geet said meekly, her head bowed. She didn't want to do anything which alienated him further. If he didn't want her to have his mother's kangan, so be it.
"Geet tum theek to ho?" Dev leaned forward and checked her forehead!
"Huh?"
"Wo kya hai na. This is the first time I have seen a woman, refusing jewellary."
Everyone except Maan burst out laughing, who was fuming at the thought of his mother's only jewellary going to Geet. But he couldn't say anything more in front of Naintara without arousing her suspicions.
He knew Naintara suspected something, she may not have voiced it, but her questioning eyes had not escaped his notice.
So he watched quietly, fuming within as Naintara made Geet wear the kangans kissing her forehead and welcoming her to their family. As soon as he could, without making it apparent, he finished his breakfast and left the table murmuring something about a meeting.
=========
Geet was lost in thought cleaning up after everyone left. Naintara and Annie had offered to help, but she had shooed them away with the excuse of having nothing else to do.
So after a lot of hassling and love, she had been left alone, well not alone exactly, her husband was there inside the bedroom, doing Babaji knows what! After the kangan fiasco, Geet was afraid to even go in front of him, fearing his wrath.
She glanced at the kangans in her hands. They were an antique design, intricately carved with meenakari, beautiful and delicate. But they felt alien to her. Maybe they didn't belong to her. How could they? When her husband refused her how could she claim them as hers? She removed them slowly, mentally apologizing to Naina Di for refusing her token. But she was determined that she will take them only when he himself will offer them to her. She would wait for that day. Till then, they were not hers.
Making up her mind, she gathered her courage, and moved towards the bedroom, intending to give them back to him.
============
Maan on the other hand was in a rage. "I should never have listened to Darji! Ye ladki mujhe pagal kar degi!"
He closed his eyes as the images replayed in his head. Her wet skin, calling out to him like light to a moth, her trembling lips, begging his affections, her eyes…..The hurt they managed to ooze out at his slightest blight. Those god damn eyes! They were what had him entrapped in her witchery. One look at them and he was a man floundering in the depths of sensations and need. The need to touch her, to caress her, to wipe out every last thing that made those orbs shimmer with tears. The innocent and nave looks she gave him, as if she was experiencing all this for the first time. As if he was the first man she had been with!
If his eyes made him believe it, her trembling lips and heaving chest made him believe otherwise! She was no innocent when it came to the art of seduction! Then why why why! Did his foolish heart think otherwise?
He knew what she was. The truth about her! Yet he yearned for that innocence that her eyes conveyed.
"No Maan! Don't fall into that trap! Women are full of treachery and deceit! Remember what happened the last few times you decided to trust a woman?"
And that memory was enough to wall him off once again. The scars obtained during those times may not be physically present. But they were there, nevertheless, festering like an old wound.
What he didn't consider was that maybe all they needed was the right woman's touch to heal
