Chapter 7: "Both the boy and the mother bled out to death. The boy died first," Satya said looking at the autopsy result. "It doesn't make sense," Satya said and turned around to see Geet and Maan walking inside the bedroom. He knew that something was off for couple of weeks now but he had never dared to question his boss. Maan was not only his boss but a very good friend but he didn't want to intrude right away. He had just spilled his fears in front of Geet and by the looks of it, Geet was aware of the situation too.
"Is that relevant?" Emily asked looking at the corpse marker on the floor.
"It may be," Geet said snapping her gloves back on. "The killer's gratification comes not from one strong and fatal stroke but several shallow cuts which takes more time. The mother had eighty-seven cuts in total and the boy had forty three," she said.
"He likes to spend time with women," Emily said.
"Maybe he is not a very strong person," Satya said. "The knife he used to kill could have effectively induced fatal wounds and with only couple of penetrations he could have effectively killed the two. But he didn't. He withheld his strength and took it easy." Satya added making stabbing motions with his pen. "He got joy from the act of stabbing itself?" Satya asked without speaking out loud what he really implied.
"It could have been an allegory for rape had the penetrations were deeper. But they aren't. The woman has wounds all over her torso and genitalia. Patches of wounds occur on her thighs too but see where majority of the wounds are located?" Geet asked pointing to a section where David had provided them with table.
"The highest number of wounds occurs on her breasts and genitalia. He was attacking her motherhood," Maan finally spoke for the first time after coming inside the room and staring at the bed where the bloodied body of the boy was neatly laid out. "The killer identified himself with the boy," he said as he ran his gloved finger on the blood stain.
Emily and Satya exchanged glances.
"What do you think Dr. Geet?" Maan asked turning around and looking straight at her.
"That was quite accurate," she replied. "The killer may not have identified with the boy but maybe the father. There is an element of remorse in the way the boy's body was laid out; as if he was put to sleep," Geet said.
"That's another possibility, yes." Maan replied.
"In the previous case with father and daughter there were only dozen or so stabbing wounds. What is your hypothesis for the two cases to be linked? The violence wasn't extreme, victimology doesn't match, there are no overlaps in suspect pool – if one exists and there are no similarities between the two families," Emily rattled off.
"Is that what you see?" Maan challenged her. Emily noted that the fog of melancholy that surrounded him had started to thin. It was as if he was enjoying mental wrestling the case offered him and sincerely hoped that it wouldn't lead to complete catharses.
"What do you see then?" Emily asked him.
"I see two families where there is a dominant parent who is the biggest influence in the child's life – here it is the father and in previous case it was the mother. In both the cases there is no sign of breaking and entering, time of death is almost similar and knife was used as the primary weapon. The children died first and their parent last. The socioeconomic conditions of the families are almost similar and if we dig much deeper we will see that their daily patterns will be almost similar too," Maan replied.
The rest simply looked on.
"What are you thinking Geet?" Maan asked when she didn't speak for a long time.
"Something doesn't add up," she replied. She chewed her lips and paced around for minutes.
She walked towards the window next to where the woman's body was lying and screamed.
Emily jumped at the sudden shriek while Maan and Satya looked at each other their jaws open. What was Geet doing?
She smiled when she saw the next door neighbor turned the lights turn on.
"Why didn't they scream?" She asked.
To be continued.
