Chapter one:

The mark

Rules for agents 1:

Create the perfect cover

Agent 2 took at her burner cell, knowing that she would have to inform the boss of the new case. The boss was the one who would organise and give out the tasks.

"Agent 2" The boss as always answered after two rings. Agent 2 had never met the boss, indeed as far as she was aware none of the agents had ever met the boss. Instead it had been the trainer who acted as the conduit between them.

She knew that the boss also carried out jobs, for the most important cases were always left out of reach from the agents, even from Agent 2 who was one the first agents.

She didn't even know the gender of the boss because the boss always used those gadgets that morphed voice. So it was always a mechanical voice that spoke to her, heightening the sensation of an otherworldly effect of the boss.

"The mark is Maan Singh Khurana but we are to protect him." She quickly explained, knowing that the boss hated any delay or sloppiness.

Agent 2 waited patiently for a reply but for the first time the boss hesitated before answering back shocking her.

"Boss?" she asked cautiously, not wanting to anger.

"I want you to infiltrate into his close circle through his family" The boss order, covering up any hesitation and leaving Agent 2 with no option but to follow orders. "I'll set up the alias for you."

And Agent 2 was left with only details to follow, wondering why the boss wasn't taking the job himself.

The press waited patiently for an hour but the moment he entered the Plaza Conference room light bulbs were flashing like mad and the questions poured out in a steady stream.

Yet the man whom the attention was focused on just gave his lazy smirk as he sauntered towards the dais. He wore a three piece suite with such perfection that there could be no doubt it was tailor made just for him and the arrogant walk made it clear that he made the world follow his tune.

Everyone in the room held their breath, basking in the presence of the man who exuded power with such nonchalance and charisma.

"Ladies and Gentlemen of the press, here is Maan Singh Khurana." The PR representative of Khurana Corporation gave an useless introduction for everyone's attention was already riveted on him.

With the same ease as one would talk to a friend he picked up the mike that had been passed to him and sat down with legs stretched easily. It was the perfect pose of aristocratic decadence, with a face that was sinfully beautiful in his sharp features.

"Morning." He let his lips curl, giving the simple word more power. "Questions?"

It took a few seconds for the dazed members of the press to open their mouths but somehow they managed to do so.

"Mr Khurana, is it true that Khurana Corporations has taken on a defence project for the government?" A breathless female reporter asked.

"Well……maybe." He smirked, flustering the woman even more. "Well it's for the government official to say," But a look of mischief crossed his face, clearly showing that he didn't really care for the rules, "But it might be true." He gave a wink to emphasise his point.

Maan could feel some of the men next to him stiffen with the realisation that he had blurted out the possibility of a project but Maan ignored them. He knew better than anyone on how to deal with the press.

"Sir, it is estimated that you are worth over 50 billion dollars." One man asked, trying to appear cool but the nervous tick on his face gave him away. "With so much money, while so many others have nothing it seems necessary for you to donate some of that wealth. Do you plan any philanthropic ventures?"

Maan let the calm faade slip for a second, on purpose, and addressed the man in a voice that was harsh in its very leniency. "I don't appreciate people questioning me on how I spend money neither do I enjoy the idea that my wealth is in some way undeserved." The reporter looked both frightened and upset at Maan's reaction.

Everyone in the room shot dirty looks at the reporter, blaming him for disgruntling their charming interviewee.

"But as always, Khurana Enterprise has been associated with various charitable organisations and NGO's" Maan went back to his charming self, causing relief and even more affection from the crowd. "Anymore questions?"

"Mr Khurana there have been so many women linked with you, such as the model Melinda Kerr and Lesley Cole" another female reporter asked while fluttering her eyelashes. Maan's grin wider at the woman's obvious flirtatious tone. "But none of those relationships were long term. So are there any plans for a serious relationship or marriage?"

"Serious relationship?" Maan just looked down for a second before looking up to give a cheeky grin at the crowd that had them smiling back with indulgence. "Well with the right woman…..no one knows what can happen."

"What sort of woman would you want?" A reporter asked, forgetting about her journalistic integrity.

"Someone who is unique and will shine brighter than anyone else." With that comment he put on his aviators and stood up. "Thanks for your questions."

Maan Singh Khurana walked out the room with no one protesting, for he came and went with his own wishes.

A young woman, barely 24 stood in the massive foyer of Khurana mansion. Wearing a summer dress with ballet flats she looked fresh and innocent, a stark contrast the domineering house.

Its gorgeous, she thought as she looked at the place. She shook her head at the idea of refurbishing the house, Silly rich people spending money on something that is already perfect.

"Ah you must be the interior designer." A regal but warm looking woman walked up to her and smiled. "I am Savitri Devi."

"Hello Ma'am" She was impressed by Savitri's grace.

"Well let me take you to your room, where you can stay and overlook the changes. I'll put you in the east wing, where we will be doing the changes and later on if the renovations get too noisy you can move to another wing." Savitri explained, leading her up the grand staircase.

"That sounds great." She only smiled at Savitri, agreeing with the lady.

"Well tomorrow afternoon you can go to the office to see the redecorations for the top floor." Savitri opened the room door to let her into the guestroom. It was a lovely room done in pastels but had some brilliant colours in the decorations that shone bright against the softness.

"Nakul, our housekeeper can be reached through the intercom and if you need anything please don't hesitate to call him or me." Savitri reassured her. "We wouldn't want to inconvenience you while we

"It's a lovely room, it won't need much changes." She told Savitri.

"Oh this room was done by me on a whimsy, the rest of the wing needs help"

"Sure, I'll have a look just now."

"Sorry I forgot to get your full name." Savitri smiled at the young girl. "It was Meera right?"

"Meera Shah" Meera returned the smile.

Adi was running around frantically, wanting to make sure that everything was perfect for his boss. Maan Singh Khurana never screamed at his employees but he annihilated their self esteem if he felt they were performing below their capability. And Adi was in no mood for that trauma.

"Pinky is the lady here for the secretary position?" He asked the receptionist. Mrs Chada, Maan's trusted secretary had taken a long withheld break and as such they were in urgent need of a replacement. Thankfully an employment agency had sent a temp in.

"She is in the waiting room Sir." Pinky smiled dreamily at Adi. "But she is quite different from anyone who works here."

A flustered Adi had no time for such details, "I can't deal with that Pinky, she just needs to be able to work. That is the important thing."

Pinky shrugged but Adi was already walking away towards the waiting room in the foyer of the company.

And sitting there was the lady he was seeking but she nothing like he had imagined.

"Aap Geet Handa hain?" He asked the lady in confusion. For she was wearing a salwar kameez, jhumkas and even had her hair in a plait. No one in Khurana Enterprise ever dressed this way for all wore formal western clothes.

"Yes, I am Geet Handa the temporary secretory for Maan Singh Khurana." She had a calm voice and there wasn't a single line of worry on her face. Instead there was a smile.

"So…..ummm you have a BBA degree?" He asked apprehensively though this had already been told to him by the agency.

"Yes," she didn't even blink at the question but her smile grew wider. "I've also worked for Galaxy Industries as a secretary."

Cool as a cucumber, Adi thought while being impressed by her attitude. Maybe she will fit in easily after all. So he was a bit more calm as he continued, "Well I'll lead you to Mr Khurana's office."

So they walked and rode the elevator in silence. Adi looked at the expressionless face and had the burning desire to talk but the lack of interest in the girl's face held him back.

Within minutes they were in the top level and were outside Maan's office. Adi coughed nervously while knocking on the door.

"Come in Adi" A voice called out. It always surprised Adi that his boss always recognised everyone's knocks but then again MSK had many talents.

Adi entered first, and stammered out, "Sir the temporary secretary Ms Handa is here."

"Send her in" Maan leaned back on his chair with his typical smirk. It was always entertaining for him to have temporary staff for it was a hobby of his to terrorise them and see them crumble in fear. His usual secretary, Ms Chada was too professional and used to him to let him scare her that way so this was a particular treat.

And the moment he saw the girl he knew that this would be fun ride.

She looked like a simple middle class girl, wearing a salwar kameez of all things. She wouldn't have been out of place in a village with the way she had her in a single braid.

He looked at her from her shoes and let his eyes roam over her. She had a lovely figure, with curves in the right places and a narrow waist. But it was her eyes that had him blink.

Her hazel eyes shone bright with humour as she stared at him, as if enjoying a private joke and that disconcerted him.

"Ms Handa nice to meet you." He drawled out the words, this is going to be interesting.

"The pleasure is mine" Her voice held nothing but happiness, however Maan could have sworn there was a challenge in her voice.
