Chapter 38: Sins of the Parent
The silence in pain,
Precursor to the tempest
That brews within,
And let the emotions erupt
Before the clouds fade,
We watch the thunder and storm
Let the world collapse
Before we can rebuild.
Present:
"And I am the one who got her pregnant."
For a second everything held still as Rano tried to grasp on to what he said. Her mouth was wide open in surprise, confusion and bewilderment.
Maan waited for a reaction from her, knowing that she would erupt in anger once the news would sink in.
But the reaction did not come from Rano, instead he heard a growl from behind him. Turning around he was met with the enraged face of a middle aged man.
The man was rumbling towards him and within seconds was holding his collar.
"HOW DARE YOU!" He screamed with a red face as he shook Maan. "YOU'RE THE bas***d WHO GOT MY DAUGHTER PREGNANT!"
Maan could have easily pushed the man away because he was much stronger and younger but as he realised that this was Geet's father he made no attempts to escape. He knew that this was a part of his penance for the mess he had created of Geet's life.
"I'LL KILL YOU!" Geet's father yelled right into his face, ignoring Rano who was making attempts to pull him off Maan. "TEAR YOU TO PIECES!"
Maan knew what was coming, yet he let the man punch him right in the face with all the force of his anger. He let him get in another hit, staying still to the man's attack.
"Rukiye!" Rano screamed in distress at her husband but it was someone else who stopped in.
"STOP!" Geet screamed at her father, managing to squeeze between the two men. "Stop right there!"
Mohinder was about to have a go at Maan again when he realised that it was Geet standing in front of him. His eyes widened in a mixture of disbelief and happiness. After years of separation the idea of having his daughter back in the house was unimaginable.
"Geet'.Geet?" He reached out to touch his daughter, to check if she truly was there. "Is that you?"
But Geet was still fuming from the way her father had hit Maan. "You have no right to hit Maan like that!"
Mohinder glared at Maan harder. "I have every right to hit him! He got my daughter pregnant! He made a mess of our lives!"
"And that is no longer your business!" Geet didn't hold back, letting him know in words that she no longer considered her father a part of her life. "And he isn't the only one who made a mess."
It was Maan who tried to calm down Geet, "Geet maybe you guys should calm and talk to each other. Try and sort things out." He wanted Geet to talk things through
Mohinder felt anger and frustration that an outsider was telling Geet what to do but then he felt upset as he realised that it was his own doing.
Geet wanted to protest because it was intolerable for her to listen to her parents but as she saw the stubborn look on Maan's face that told her that he would not let her walk away like this.
So she turned to mom and dad, managed to calm down enough to mumble out, "Fine I'll talk."

Every inch of Virender's body was in pain as he laid down on one of the hospital beds. The doctors had told him that he was lucky that the gun shot had missed any major vessels and the injury wasn't severe.
For the hundredth time he looked down at the note in his hand.
If you say a word, we will make you squeal till you have no breath.
The words were not as horrifying as the fact that this message had been left on his bedside despite the security and privacy in the hospital. It meant that they could come anytime and attack him. Or even kill me, he thought with a shudder.
He understood how vulnerable he was and the fact that this group was not demanding anything but his destruction.
It was for that reason that he didn't tell the police anything about them, not that the investigation would have found any clue to those phantom women.
So it was a silent Virender facing Detective Angie as he didn't want to risk his life by filing a complaint.
"So are you sure that there is nothing you'll like to report to the police?" Angie asked curiously. Even an idiot could see that there was more to Virender's gunshot than the stupid story he had told. It was obvious that this wasn't an accident, yet the man was staying silent.
"No." Virender remained stoic, though he could feel the noose tightening around his neck, the feeling of imminent downfall.
"Well in that case there is something I need to discuss with you." Angie knew that as a professional she should not get any pleasure out of this but she couldn't help it "We are charging you with rape of a minor."
"WHAT!" Virender nearly jumped off the bed in surprise. This was the last thing he was expecting.
"Yes, the rape of Meher Jaswal."Angie's voice was hard as she said the words. "Someone dropped off your diary anonymously. It gives us sufficient evidence to arrest and try you in court!"
"I don't believe this!" Virender yelled in anger and pulled off his IV lines in distress. "I've been set up!"
"We had a warrant for your place and had a copy of your handwriting which matched with that of the diary so it is highly unlikely that you have been set up." Angie leaned forward, to show that she wasn't scared of him at all. "We will have you under surveillance to ensure you don't try to runaway before court proceedings."
With that she walked out, letting a grin cross her face at Virender's distress.
How the hell did this happen? Virender pulled at his hair in anger, unable to believe the turn of events. Maan must be responsible for this!
-----------------------
Awkward, Maan thought as he sat with Geet's grandfather and Mel. It was good that Mel was there to act as a buffer but as he felt the old man's eyes on him he was very self conscious.
Darjii just continue to give his penetrating gaze to Maan while trying to talk to Mel.
"Meliara I am your great-grandpa!" He smiled at the little child, feeling both peace and sadness in seeing Rahul's daughter.
"Great grandpa?" Mel was confused "Are you great? What did you do to be great?" She started to look excited at the prospect.
Maan muffled his laughter, not wanting to embarrass Mel or Darjii. "Mel, Great-grandpa is what you call your grandfather's father."
Mel's eyes widened with understanding. "So you are mummy's grandpa? The one that I talked to before?"
"Yes darling." Darjii reached over to pat her head affectionately. He smiled at the little angel who reminded him so much of Geet. "I am the one who talked to you on the phone. Your mum's Darjii."
Mel seemed happy with the revelation and went closer towards Darjii but spoke to Maan. "Knight isn't that cool!"
Darjii raised his eyebrows seeing the two interact. He wanted to understand why Mel was so attached to this stranger and also why Maan felt such attachment to the child.
"Maan Singh Khurana?" Darjii asked, the name sounding almost like a challenge.
"Yes sir, that is my name." Maan made himself sound respectful towards the man, instinctively knowing that he was very important to Geet.
"So'.how long have you known Geet?" He made the words sound innocent, not wanting to make Mel aware of the tense environment but Darjii's eyes clearly showed his curiosity.
"Well...nearly 5 years now." Maan answered carefully, not wanting to give the wrong impression. "We met here."
"I...understood that." Darjii gritted out. "It is pretty obvious considering what happened. One doesn't get a girl...well...in that condition unless they are in the same country."
Maan maintained his eye contact with Darjii, wanting the man to see not only the sincerity of his words but also his feelings for Geet. "Yes, you are right. But I want you to understand that certain circumstances were out of my hands otherwise I would have never left her."
Darjii raised an eyebrow at Maan's comment, noticing the confidence in his words. So what is the story? Does he love Geet?
"Well...what are your intentions towards her?" Darjii focused all his attention on Maan, wanting to see the man's expressions. Darjii firmly believed in making amends, not focusing on the crumbles of yesterday and he wanted to know what this man's role would be in his granddaughter's future.
"I want to be with her." Those words held such emotions in their simplicity. There were no conditions or restrictions applied, just the idea of being with Geet was enough for him. For Maan nothing else matter.
And Darjii let a small smile grace his face. He will keep her happy.
-----------------------------------------
The atmosphere in Mohinder's study was so tense that it seemed as if there was a cloud over the place.
As if in a battle, Geet had her feet apart as she stood against the window in the room. She wasn't looking forward to this conversation for it had taken her immense amount of effort to build a skin thick enough to withstand these emotions and she didn't want her parents to crumble that protective wall.
"What is it you want?" She tried to get to the point, not wanting to waste time. "You never acknowledged Lily and Rahul's relationship, so why do you want Mel now?"
It was Rano who spoke, while Mohinder looked at Geet. "We want both of you to come back Geet. It's been 5 years, can't you forgive us?"
Geet looked at them with burning eyes. "If it was me whom you wronged I would forgive but how can I forgive you when the people you have wronged are no longer alive?"
This time it was Mohinder who found his voice. "Maybe we, I don't deserve your forgiveness but let us see Meliara. She is our granddaughter."
Geet gave a humourless laugh at that comment. "Granddaughter? Well I have NEVER denied my child what is her right. You will never get her custody but I'll make sure that you can spend time with her."
"Thank you Geetu!" Rano's voice was filled with such happiness.
"Don't thank me." Geet sneered. "If it was up to me, I would never let you see my child. But Meliara means to much to me to let a grudge affect her life. My child will know what it means to have the unconditional love of a parent, even if it is not from her biological parents."
Those words caused Mohinder to flinch with guilt but he kept his head down in shame.
"I am leaving now" She said with a finality. "I'll be back with Mel later, so that you can spend time with her but it will be under my conditions and rules."
And she walked out.

Vicky felt happiness like no other as he listened to Angie. His whole life had been shadowed by the grief surrounding his conception and birth. Guilt at being the reason for his mother's death as well as being the permanent reminder of Virender's evil was something that he had carried with him.
No amount of love and care could wipe those away but vengeance help to make it bearable.
"Do you have any idea where the diary came from?" Angie was quite suspicious but she couldn't find anything or anyone to point her doubts to.
"No, I didn't steal anything from Virender" Vicky said cheekily, twisting the words. "But I definitely thank the angels who did."
"Well, rape of a minor is quite a serious offence."
"Hmmm...I'll make sure that Virender stays behind bars the rest of his life...or dies while escaping" There was no hint of remorse in his voice, Vicky meant every word.
Angie choose to ignore the threat, after all she didn't want to arrest Vicky but still tried to keep him grounded. "Vicky we need more proof though." Angie tried to make him understand the reality of the case. "With such a high profile figure we need more proof."
"I'll do you one better, I have a witness." He smirked at Angie's shock.
"Who?"
"Maan Singh Khurana, his own son." Vicky thought of his brave brother, who would face the whole world and announce how big a devil their sire was.
"Maan?" Angie's face showed horror at the realisation that Maan must have seen the act.
"Oh you have no idea what Virender is or what he has done." Vicky gave a dry laugh. "Sometimes I wonder if he can even die or whether I would need to stake his soulless body."
"But Vicky you need to be careful, he sounds cunning."
"Don't worry, there is one person Virender could never win against." Vicky smiled at that. "Maan Singh Khurana never loses and he will hardly let this battle go unanswered."
-----------------------
"Why do you keep talking to your brother on the phone?" Geet asked curiously. "It sounds so cryptic."
"He is just doing a little job for me." Maan kept a straight face. And its something I will keep far away from you.
Geet shrugged at Maan's comment, not wanting to pry. "Anyways thanks for being there with me. I appreciate the support." She let her hand brush against him, telling him more than the words of her gratitude.
She had been so angry at her parent's house but for some reason she felt lighter and free afterwards. She didn't want to admit it but she knew it was because of Maan and Mel.
They were walking around the street, after having dropped Mel back at Nonna's house. It was a peaceful afternoon with light wind but sunshine.
"Well there is always a way for you to show your appreciation." Maan gave a mischievous grin and winked at her.
Geet rolled her eyes at him. "Geez you have a one track mind!"
Maan pretended to be shocked. "Dr Handa! You are the one with the dirty mind, not that I mind." He laughed.
"What do you want then?" She played along with him
"Marry me!" He asked with a tender smile that became playful. "I'll ask you only three times Dr Handa and then no more. So will you marry me?"
"Ummm'Maan'.I can't." She stammered out. "I am a mother'.I've to think about Mel."
"Strike one." Maan said cheerfully, looking not a bit disturbed by Geet's refusal. "Two more chances Geet, two more chances."
Geet was disgruntled. Why is he so nonchalant? "Are you okay?"
"Why wouldn't I be?" He wanted to laugh at her confusion but kept a straight face.
"Well'.I just said no'and you are smiling'" She knew she sounded like an idiot but she wanted to understand what was happening.
"Is someone already regretting their refusal?" Maan nudged her playfully.
"No!" Geet was now annoyed at his behaviour. "It doesn't matter." What is wrong with me? Why am I acting like a teenager, she thought even as she said the petulant words.
"Well don't fret." He smirked harder. "We are going out tonight!"
