Chapter 2
"I hope the crime scene is secured by now," Geet noted as Maan steered the jeep inside an upper middle class neighborhood with neatly arranged rows of houses.
"Problem this time is not making people stay out of crime scene," Maan said walking inside the compound which had law enforcement officials and few neighbors. Geet looked at him in confusion. "It's actually making them go inside the crime scene which is a first in my career actually," he said and lifted the yellow tape beyond which civilians weren't allowed. Geet followed him wordlessly drawing basic conclusion from his words and thanking God for giving her with an iron stomach which stayed put in worst of the worst crime scenes.
But even she felt bile rising up the throat when she stood in the doorway of the room where the double homicide had taken place. There were only three men inside covered in polyvinyl overalls and shoes seeing how the entire room was covered in blood.
"The two bodies are severely mutilated," David from crime scene said looking at Geet.
"Do you want to go in?" Inspector Satya asked Geet looking at her wearily. She nodded grimly. He handed her and Maan vinyl clothing and shoes. She looked at him questioningly.
"I am performing interviews here," he said sweeping in general direction. Geet nodded grimly.
"Who are the victims?" Geet asked.
"The woman, thirty-nine and her son is thirteen year old." Satya said consulting his notepad. Geet listened intently. "Mr. Guha who owns this house is a marketing consultant. The victims are his wife and son. Mr. Guha is not in station at the moment. I called the firm he works for and they are arranging for him to return ASAP. He will meet us today evening." Satya said. Geet nodded.
"Is it alright if I come in too?" A voice called out from the lobby. Maan nodded looking at the woman who had asked the question.
"Geet, meet Emily who joins us from anti-terrorist cell," Maan performed the niceties. Emily and Geet nodded and smiled at one another.
"If you don't mind, I am going to sit this one out," Maan said and walked back to living room. Geet looked at him with a look of surprise but didn't question him about his apprehension. She agreed that this was one messed up crime scene but they had seen pretty gory stuff in their collaboration. She frowned when she saw him walk out of the flat altogether ignoring everything.
"Is he okay?" Emily asked Geet as she put on overalls. "One look of this room, he said you have to be here and walked out without any other word." She said. Geet made a mental note to ask him about it later. Something was bugging him for several weeks now and it had all started at the first crime scene two months ago.
"So are you one of those shrinks they show on TV who take one look at crime scene and perform few interviews and come up bunch of hypothesis which results in catching the perpetuator in matter of days?" Emily asked staring hard at Geet. Geet smiled suddenly at her words. Emily raised an eyebrow at that.
"You watch too many procedurals where profiling is a sub-genre," Geet said snapping on a pair of gloves.
"That I do Dr. Handa. Just to see what the other side is like," Emily answered frankly.
"Well it's not easy as they make it to be and profile is not something one can generate just by analyzing the crime scene and fitting that with various theories, though it is one of the inputs," Geet said. "Let's go in," she said and walked in.
Geet and Emily exchanged glances when they put their feet on blood soaked floor. The sticky liquid squished under their feet giving them a feeling of different world; one where sanity didn't exist.
"What do you see in this room Emily?" Geet asked. Emily looked at her raising an eyebrow. "Describe the room for me please," Geet said switching on a recorder. It was her habit to record everything she spoke when she visited a crime scene which wasn't very often. She got several insights when she analyzed the crime scene with photographs and validated her commentary then.
"Okay, let's see. This looks like master bedroom. There is a queen size bed at the center with its headboard attached to the wall opposite to the door. There is a wardrobe to the right of the door and to the bed. Left of the door and right opposite to the bed attached to the wall is a dresser," Emily said peering at its contents.
"What do you see on walls?" Geet asked.
"There are photographs of the family. I can see that they were quite happy." Emily said with a hint of sadness.
"David, can your team get photographs of every inch of this room?" She requested. The photographer nodded after getting the nod from his boss.
"Now look again and explain those photos," Geet said. Emily frowned. She didn't understand where this was going but she decided to humor Geet.
"Okay, the photos are all on the right side of bed and the wall right opposite to the door. There are photos of the family and the boy since he was a baby," Emily noted. Geet waited for her to go on. Emily sighed. "Well that's all I got." She replied.
"How old is the boy?" Geet asked.
"Thirteen," Emily replied instantaneously.
"Which photo do you think is the latest among all the ones you see on the wall?" Geet asked. Emily thought for a minute and pointed at one.
"How old do you think he was when they took this picture?" Geet asked.
"I don't know. But he doesn't look thirteen," Emily said once she had a look at the boy's body and mentally noting his physique.
"Why haven't the parent put up his new photos?" Geet asked Emily. Emily simply looked at her.
"I know there will be several reasons why there are no new photos of their son – busy life, lack of space. It could be anything. But it is something that I am trained to look for." Geet said walking towards the victims. "It's observing the environment and surroundings as much as the act of crime itself."
"And then there is victimology," she said crouching on her toes and looking at the mother.
"Why them?" Emily asked. Geet nodded.
Emily blanched at the sight of the mother whose face was mutilated horribly.
"I counted sixty stab wounds and I am sure I have missed at least a dozen on her," David noted ruefully.
"What does this crime scene tell you Emily?" Geet asked walking towards the boy who was placed on the bed.
"The person who did was angry." She replied and stopped. Geet nodded her to continue. "The killer could have easily stopped after couple of stabs but he didn't. He continued till he had no skin left to stab." She whispered. Geet looked up to see Emily staring at the woman intently. Though Emily had had her share of crime scenes, Geet knew that nothing came close to what they were witnessing at the moment.
"What about the boy?" Emily asked Geet.
"He was killed on floor but the killer placed him on the bed and covered with sheet. There are multiple stab wounds but not as many as his mother," Geet said knitting her eyebrows.
"Did he feel remorse for the boy?" Emily asked distractedly.
"It's one of the possibilities," she admitted.
"Who died first?" Geet asked David. David looked up from the side of bed.
"I cannot say that for certain. But it could be the boy," he said. "See these cuts?" He said pointing towards the slit that started on the base of his throat and stopped millimeters from his heart. "It's one of the longest and deepest cut on the boy's body. There are several more which punctured his lung which was fatal." David explained.
"And mother was alive when he bled out to death?" Emily asked widening her eyes.
"She probably was," David replied.
"But was she conscious?" Geet asked. Emily and David looked at her.
"I cannot say that for certain. Probably once I finish performing autopsy, I should be able to ascertain that but don't bank on it," he said.
"Is that important?" Emily asked Geet.
"The boy is killed first with few strokes whereas the woman is kept alive and is probably made to watch her son die." Geet frowned at this thought.
"What is it Geet?" Emily asked.
"This crime scene seems familiar to the one two months ago but the first crime scene didn't have this kind of rage or overkill. Mutilation is much more violent here." Geet answered.
"Are you suggesting the two killers are different?" Emily asked walking out.
"It's too early to speculate and conclude. But…" Geet trailed and followed Emily out.
"There is something very familiar about this crime scene. I don't know exactly what that is," Geet said to a perplexed Emily.
To be continued.
