Hey Fatima!

Both the updates were lovely!👏

I loved the whole Premeer proposal and Preet's role in it, also I'm liking his involvement in making sure that the wedding goes along smoothly⭐️. I like it that you've subtly shown signs of an understanding relationship between Preet and Meher's Dad with both of them trusting and relying on each other. I'm liking Veera's character too- keeping fingers crossed that she will help her brother out in case Daljeet plans some nasty tricks.. would love it.

Preet's words to his Mom about Meher... I was imagining what if someday Meher comes to know about it? I'm sure she would hit him with her hathoda.. I mean.. haath.. 😆

The proposal was so cute... I was picturing a tousled hair Sushant in T-shirt and pyajamas confessing his love in the midst of pecking chickens in the darkness all around. (Awww...) An awkward setting, and perhaps that was what made it all the more adorable.😳

Waiting for the next part! Oh and yes, I do have a thought in mind of what is going to happen next, let's see if it does turn to be true.😃

Chapter 32 - Aaj Hai Sagai

The day of Prem and Heer's engagement had finally arrived, and everyone was excited. Balraj, Teji and Heer had gone to the town market. Heer was to be dropped off at the beauty parlor to get ready, while her parents wanted to make last minute purchases. Meher had been left home to take care of the final details for tonight's party.

With so much to do, in regards to the wedding, and so little time, Meher and Preet were finding it difficult to spend time together. Still, unable to control himself, Preet would manage to surprise Meher with a visit every now and then. It was during one of these visits that Meher told Preet that Daljeet had her heart set on seeing him marry Ashlesha.

Preet was stunned. He knew Ashlesha liked him, but he had never reciprocated her sentiments. And for Daljeet to suppose that he would ever consider marrying her daughter seemed to him to be an absurd idea. But the fact that she knew about Vishaka and Viren was disturbing to him. Both he and Meher were afraid that Daljeet would use that information to cause a disruption in Prem and Heer's wedding, especially if she saw them together. And both had, therefore, agreed to keep their relationship a secret until after their elder siblings' marriage. After that, they would tell their respective parents and ask for their blessings.

Meher was hanging up a string of decorative flowers, when there was a knock on the door. It can't be guests already, she thought, as she ran to open the door.

"Tan Ta-Da! Preet Juneja at your service ma'am", said Preet with a bow.

"Preet!" Meher squealed with delight, as she hugged him. "What a pleasant surprise! What are you doing here?"

"I just dropped off Ma, Kuldi, and Veera at the beauty parlor", said Preet. "We saw Heer bhabi and your parents there too. So, I figured you were home alone and..."

"And what?" said Meher smiling mischievously, as she sensed his intentions.

"And I thought I'd drop by and see if you needed any help", said Preet faking innocence. He clutched the front of his half-buttoned shirt shut with both hands. "Meher Maan...you naughty naughty girl...maukay ka faida utthanay ki bilqul koshish mat karna (don't you dare think of taking advantage of me)".

Meher grabbed Preet by the collar and pulled him close until his face was just inches from hers. "Maukay ka to poora faida utthaoongi main (Oh I'll definitely take advantage of you)", she said almost whispering.

"Acha? (Really?)", sighed Preet.

"Yes", said Meher, pushing him away suddenly and handing him a basket of flowers. "Start putting these up".

"Kya Meher! Tum bhi na! (What! Come on Meher!)" cried Preet. "Sabki nazroon se bach ke tumhare paas poncha hoon aur tumne aik ghade ki tarah mujhe kaam pe laga diya hai (I snuck out from under everyone's nose just to be with you and you're giving me donkey work)". He reached over and began to feel Meher all over.

"Preet!" cried Meher. "What do you think you're doing?!"

"Just as I thought", sighed Preet. "There's not a single romantic bone in your body!"

"Uff ho Preet!" cried Meher. "Tang mat karo. Aaj shaam ko sagayi hai, aur abhi bhi itne kaam baqi hai (Don't tease me Preet. Today is the engagement and there is still a ton of important work to do)."

"Aray kaam ki baat to bataney aaya tha main (Speaking of important)", said Preet cheerfully. "Guess what! Daljeet Singh left town early this morning. She said she had some urgent business to take care of. And Ashlesha wanted to go on a shopping spree, so she went with her! They definitely won't be here tonight. We can relax and just enjoy ourselves!"

"Where did they go?" asked Meher.

"Who cares!" said Preet. "I mean good riddance. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they don't make it back for the wedding either."

"Oh they'll be back", said Meher worriedly. She then lightened her mood and added, "Warna tumhari aur Ashlesha ki engagement kaise ho gi (Otherwise, how are you and Ashlesha going to get engaged)?"

"That's not funny Meher", said Preet angrily.

"Aray Preet", said Meher, "tum toh naraz ho gai. Main to mazak kar rahi thi (I can't believe you're upset Preet. I was just joking)".

"Yeah well, it was a lousy joke", said Preet moodily.

"Acha baba (okay)!" said Meher holding her ears. "I promise I won't ever bring it up again...Khush (happy)?"

"Almost...", smiled Preet as he put his arms around Meher's waist and pulled her close to him. All of a sudden Preet and Meher were startled by Veera's voice.

"Preet Bhaiya, are you here?" Veera called out. Preet and Meher quickly broke apart.

Preet walked to the door just as Veera came in with Balraj. "Veera, Balraj Sir!" he gulped. "What a pleasant surprise!"

"Preet puttre (son)...tum yahan (you here)?" asked Balraj.

"Han (yes)...woh (uh)...I just stopped by to see if I could help out with the preparations for tonight." Said Preet. "You got done fast", he whispered to his sister. "How did you know I was here?"

"I didn't", said Veera. "I just had to have my nails done, and there wasn't much of a wait, so I got done pretty early. I saw Teji Chachee at the beauty parlor. She told me Meher was home alone, so I thought I'd come by and see if I could be of any help. We saw your car parked by the edge of the field as we were walking up. Ma has been calling you like forever. Why didn't you answer your phone? She had to call one of the drivers to pick us up."

"Uff!" said Preet slapping his forehead. "I forgot my phone in the car".

"Hmm", said Veera. "You're forgetting a lot of things these days aren't you Preet Bhaiya?"

"Kya? Tum kehna kya chahtee ho? (What? What are you trying to say?)" Asked Preet nervously.

"Nothing", said Veera smiling mischieviously. "So Meher, looks like great minds think alike. My brother and I are all yours for the next 2 hours. Then we'll have to go home and get ready. What would you like us to do that won't spoil my manicure?"

Later that evening...

Meher was wrapping up her work in the kitchen, when her mother came rushing in. "Meher!" she cried. "You're still here? The guests have started to come and you're not even dressed yet. Hurry up beta!"

"Teji come quick!" called Balraj. "Prem and his family just arrived". Teji rushed out to join her husband in greeting their guests.

Meher quickly washed her hands and ran to the kitchen window for a glimpse of the groom's party. Lalit and Gaytri had just arrived followed by a dashing looking Prem dressed in fancy white and silver wedding attire. I better get ready fast, she thought.

She turned to go but was surprised to see Preet standing before her. Meher looked him over admiringly. He looked extremely handsome in dark blue attire with fancy bead work and matching dupatta.

"How do I look?" he grinned. "Like prince charming hai na (right)?"

Meher walked around him in a circle and said, "Um...you look...okay, but nothing compared to Prem Jiju though. Now that's what I call a prince charming?" She teased.

"What?" cried Preet miffed at her remark. "Waise (By the way) Madam, right now I look a lot better than you", he said pointing to Meher's soiled clothes and messy hair.

Just then Teji entered the kitchen. "Aray Meher, tu abhi tak yahan hai (Meher are you still here)? Hurry up and get dressed beta, phir Heer ko bhi to neechay lana hai (then you have to bring Heer down)".

"Um...Chachee", said Preet resting his arm on Teji's shoulder, "Don't you think you should have sent Meher to the beauty parlor too. I mean what will your guests say? Heer Bhabi is so beautiful and this one..."

"Oh hello!" cried Meher. "When I get cleaned up and get ready...tum dekhte hi reh jao ge (you'll be left with your mouth open). Hmpf!"

"Aray Meher I was just joking!" said Preet. But Meher had already left.

It wasn't long before Meher returned. She, along with some friends, was bringing Heer down. True to her word she looked beautiful. She was dressed in a light green ghagra, her long hair adorned with kajra and pulled back in a braid. Preet was talking to Herman when he spotted her. His mouth fell open and he totally lost his train of thought. Meher helped seat her equally beautiful sister, and then went to join the rest of her friends. She purposely bumped Preet's shoulder as she walked by uttering a barely audible "Hmpf!" Preet couldn't help but smile.

An atmosphere of joy surrounded the small outdoor gathering. And the local band played Punjabi wedding music. Meher was serving the guests lassi, and went back into the kitchen to get refills. She was so focused on her work that she didn't even realize that Preet had followed her. She was refilling her glasses when she heard the kitchen door close, and turned around to see Preet smiling at her.

"Preet!" she said. "Tum yahan kya kar rahe ho (What are you doing here)? And why have you shut the door?" She wasn't sure why, but the way Preet was looking at her was making her nervous.

"Meher", he said. "We haven't had 2 minutes alone to ourselves. Everyone is busy outside...I just thought this was a good time...to come and...tell you how beautiful look". Meher gulped as Preet took her hand and pulled her close to him.

"Preet koi aa jai ga (Preet someone will walk in on us)...Ma...Papaji", she said.

"Everyone is busy with PB and Heer bhabi", said Preet as he focused on Meher's lips. Meher was breathing hard. She didn't know where to look. She looked into Preet's eyes, but that only made her breathing even more difficult.

Meher gulped as Preet inched closer to her. "Um...Ve...Veera tum?!" she cried suddenly.

Preet did a quick about turn as the color drained from his face. To his relief there was no one there. Meher burst out in a nervous giggle, but stopped when she saw anger wash over Preet's face.

"You think this is funny?" he said angrily. "Dodging Veera is like dodging bullets! I did it just for us...and you don't even care!"

"Preet I'm sorry!" cried Meher. "I didn't mean to scare you. I just wasn't ready..."

"Forget it Meher!" said Preet as he stormed out of the kitchen, with Meher running after him.

Preet went outside and sat next to Prem. Meher tried to make pleading motions towards Preet but he ignored her. She could do nothing but recompose herself and pretend to smile at the guests wandering about. A few of Meher's friends took her to one corner as the local band began to play again. All of a sudden Meher had an idea. She discussed it with her friends and they all began to squeal with delight.

The girls broke into a circle and began singing:

Saat baras ki umar hai, phir bhi lagda jutt shehzada

Saat baras ki umar hai, phir bhi lagda jutt shehzada

Ke naubat dhol baje

Jab nache munde da pe-yo

(They went over to Lalit and pulled him up to dance.)

Ke naubat dhol baje

Jhoom rahay hai dharti amber, Jhoom rahi duniya.

Jhoom rahay hai dharti amber, Jhoom rahi duniya.

(They went up to Gaytri and pulled her up to dance)

Ke naubat dhol baje

Jab nache munde di ma

("Come on Chachee!" cried Meher happily, as she glanced over at Preet.)

Ke naubat dhol baje

Ghar angan ke konay konay, goonge utthi shehnai

Ghar angan ke konay konay, goonge utthi shehnai

Ke naubat dhol baje

Jab nache munde da bhai

(They tried to pull Preet up, but he refused to budge from his seat.)

Ke naubat dhol baje

O balle balle balle balle balle'.Oye! Oye!

"Oh come on Preet", said Prem, "you're always the life of the party. What's wrong with you today?"

"Yes Preet", said Kulraj. "Go on!"

"Aaj mood nahin hai", said Preet glaring at Meher. (I'm not in the mood today)

"But it's Prem's engagemenet", laughed Kulraj, "And it's your brotherly duty to dance".

"Maine kaha na aaj mood nahin hai (I said I wasn't in the mood)", said Preet. "Why don't you ask Herman Bhaiya? He's PB's brother too".

"Can't", replied Veera dryly, "He's inside...phone call...Maya".

Preet was still protesting when Meher began singing.

Meher: Aaj hai sagaayi sun larke ke bhai

Aaj hai sagaayi sun larke ke bhai

Zara naach ke hamko dikha

Aaj hai sagaayi sun larke ke bhai

Zara naach ke hamko dikha

(She slaps Preet playfully on the shoulder and then on his cheek.)

Kudi ki tarah na sharmaa...

(Preet smiles softly. She's too cute to stay mad at for long, he thinks.)

Kudi ki tarah na sharmaa...

Hai! Tu meri gal maan jaa...Tu meri gal maan jaa

(Two can play this game, thinks Preet. He get's up and starts dancing, much to the pleasure of his family.)

Preet: Sabko nacha-oon nach nach ke dikha-oon

Aa mujhko gale se lagaa

(Meher's mouth falls open. She quickly dodges Preet and runs away as he attempts to hug her)

Sabko nacha-oon nach nach ke dikha-oon

Aa mujhko gale se lagaa

Munde se zara aankh lara

(Preet winks at Meher)

Munde se zara aankh lara

Hoi! Tu meri gal maan jaa...Hai!

Tu meri gal maan jaa... O soniye!

(Meher is embarrassed that Preet would say and do everything in front of family and guests. But since none of them know he is serious, they think this is all in good fun. Preet snatches the Kajra from Meher's hair, and swings it around.)

Preet: Sar pe saja ke sehra, baaraat leke aaoon

Dulhan tujhe banaake, doli mein leke jaa-oon

Male guest: O shaava O shaava...O shaava O shaava

Meher (puts a finger on her chin and bats her eyelashes):

Bholi samajh ke mujhpe, Na daal aise daane

Shaadi nahin karoongi, Ja maan ja diwaane

Meher's friends: O shaava O shaava...O shaava O shaava

Preet (grabs hold of Meher's wrist):

Sun albeli meri tanha akeli ab kat-ti nahin ratiyaan

(Veera raises her eyebrow. Something is definitely up, she smiles).

Meher (releases herself from Preet's grip and points to her friends):

Jaa re harjayi, Chal chor kalayi

Sab dekhti hain sakhiyaan

Tu meri gal maan jaa...Tu meri gal maan jaa.

Preet : Oye! Tu meri gal maan jaa, Hai!...Tu meri gal maan jaa...O maan jaa!

Meher (again points to her circle of friends):

Kehti hain meri sakhiyan, Dil mein hai chor tere

Kyon haath dhoke aise, Peeche para hai mere

Meher's friends: O shaava O shaava...O shaava O shaava

Preet (grabs one of Meher's friends by the ears):

Sakhiyon se apni keh do, Ke beech mein na aayein

Ban jaye meri saali, Jija mujhe banaye

Male guests: O shaava O shaava...O shaava O shaava

Meher (helps her friend get away from Preet):

Main na aa-oon tere sang, Tere ache nahin dhang

Na aise baat barha

Preet (pulls Meher's dupatta over her face and tweeks her cheeks):

Mujhe kar na tu tang, ab band kar jang

aa banke dulhan ghar aa

Tu meri gal maan jaa...Tu meri gal maan jaa

Meher (pulls the dupatta off her face and dances away):

Haan!...Tu meri gal maan jaa...Tu meri gal maan jaa

Aaj hai sagaayi sun larke ke bhai

Zara naach ke hamko dikha

Preet: Sabko nacha-oon nach nach ke dikha-oon

Aa mujhko gale se lagaa

Meher: Kudi ki tarah na sharmaa.

Preet: Munde se zara aankh lara

Meher: Hai! Tu meri gal maan jaa...han

Preet : Tu meri gal maan jaa

Meher: Hai! Tu meri gal maan jaa...han

Preet : Tu meri gal maan jaa...hoi!

As the music died down, Balraj Maan stood up and announced that it was time for the engagement to take place. Loud claps, and cries of cheer and good-wishes were abound, as Prem and Heer exchanged rings. Both Preet and Meher beamed happily for their siblings. Everything had gone just perfectly. Soon the party was over and guest began to leave. The Junejas also began to leave.

"Um..Teji chachee", said Veera. "Could Meher come with us? I want to show her my outfit for the wedding. Actually I got 2 and can't decide between them...I need her suggestion...Please."

"Well beta", said Teji hesitantly. "It's getting kind of late..."

"Oh please Chachee", begged Veera. "You don't know me...I won't be able to sleep if I don't decide today...Please...I promise I'll drop her back in like half-an-hour. Please, pretty please".

"Alright", said Teji. "Half-an-hour".

Veera and Meher's car was the last to arrive at the Singh Havaili. Everyone was tired and had already gone up to their rooms. "Come on Meher Di", said Veera, "Let's go, we only have 30 minutes".

"Veera, I don't understand why you had to decide tonight. The wedding is not for another week", said Meher. She was tired and had only come because Veera had been so insistent.

"Um...Meher Di", said Veera, ignoring Meher's question. "Why don't you go up to my room? It's the third door on the right. I'll grab us something to drink and be right up".

Meher shrugged her shoulders. She was too tired to argue with Veera. Even if she did, she knew she wouldn't win. Meher walked upstairs, careful not to make too much noise. She didn't want to disturb anyone who may be resting. She quietly opened the door and went inside the room Veera had told her to go to. To her surprise it wasn't Veera's room but Preet's. Preet looked equally surprised.

Veera walked into the kitchen and found Gaytri there. "Hey Ma, how come you're still up?" she asked, as she grabbed a can of soda from the fridge.

"I was just going to get something for you and Meher to drink, but looks like you've got that under control. Now don't be lost in clothes all night. Remember Teji wants her back home soon", said Gaytri. "Where is Meher by the way?"

"Oh", said Veera matter of factly, "She's in Preet Bhaiya's room".

"Oh okay..." said Gaytri. "What!?!"

"Really Ma", said Veera smiling mischievously. "Why are you always the last one to find out?"

"Meher", smiled Preet. "What are you doing here?"

"I was looking for Veera", said Meher. "Preet Juneja did you put her up to this?"

"No! I had no clue. Dharti Ma ki qasam!" said Preet.

"Oh...well...in that case...I better go", said Meher.

"Meher wait", said Preet. He peeked outside in the hallway, before closing his door. He finally had Meher alone to himself, he thought. "I had fun tonight", he said walking towards Meher and engulfing her in his arms.

"Me too", said Meher. "But right now it's late and if Veera comes looking for me and catches me in your room...Oh God! What will she say? What will everyone say? What will they think?"

"Meher relax", said Preet, holding her tight. "Tum kha ma kha itni pareshan ho rahi ho (You're getting all worked up for no reason)". But Meher wasn't listening. Her eyes had widened with fear. "Meher...you're as stiff as a wooden plank. Can't you just relax?" sighed Preet.

"Ch...Cha...Chachee Aap? (Auntie...you?)", said Meher gulping for air.

"Ha!" laughed Preet. "I'm not so stupid Meher, that I'd fall for the same prank twice". All of a sudden Preet felt someone pull him hard by the ear. "Ouch!" he cried in surprise. His eyes widened with horror as he turned around to see that the hand gripping his ear belonged to his mother. Ma!" he cried in shock.

About 5 minutes later, Veera and a very red-faced Meher were seated behind a grumbling Preet as he drove them back to Meher's home. Nothing seemed to go right for him tonight, thought Preet.

Once parked by the edge of the field near her home, Preet waited for Meher to leave.

"Good night", said Meher quietly, as she exited the vehicle.

"Preet Bhaiya", said Veera, "Aren't you going to walk Meher back to the house?" Preet looked at his sister in surprise. "You can thank me later", she whispered winking at her brother.

Preet smiled at his sister and then quickly ran after Meher. "Hey Meher...wait up!" cried Preet.

"Preet Juneja...you stay away from me!" cried Meher. Do you know how mortified I was when your mom caught us alone in your room! God! How will I ever face her again?! And worst of all, she didn't say anything! I'm sure she'll have loads to tell my mom tomorrow morning! Oh God! Main to gayi (I'm dead)!"

Preet walked quietly alongside Meher. She was talking non-stop. He offered her a sympathetic smile and nod every now and then, but in reality he had turned a deaf ear to what she was saying, and was focused on just looking at her.

"Preet!" cried Meher. "Are you even listening to what I'm saying? This is important!"

Preet stopped walking. "Meher", he said. "I don't want to discuss anything anymore. Not tonight's party, the wedding, Ma or anything else. We have about 5 minutes before we reach your door. Can we focus on just you and me? Please".

"I know but...", protested Meher.

Preet rolled his eyes and suddenly grabbed Meher's hand and pulled her in close. "Meher Maan", he said smiling softly at her surprised expression. "Would you kindly shut up for about 2 minutes?"

Then he did something he had wanted to do since he first saw her that morning. He leaned over and tilted her face up to his and kissed her. He gently kissed her top lip and then her bottom lip, then he placed both of his lips on hers. When he opened his mouth so did she, and he brushed his tongue against hers. She tasted like tea, and the sweets they had had for desert earlier. He gradually deepened the kiss and kissed her so thoroughly that she forgot what she was about to tell him, that seemed so very important only a moment ago. He slowly pulled back and smiled at her for a moment, then ran a thumb under her bottom lip, and said, "You were saying?"

Meher looked into Preet's eyes. At that moment, she felt the world disappear around her. Nothing mattered. No one else existed. It was just the two of them alone in the universe. She slowly broke away from his hold, smiling shyly as she backed away. She didn't know what else to do so she made a run for it, and didn't stop until she was behind closed doors in her room. Preet had kissed her. Her first real kiss. She could hardly believe it. She wondered now if it had only been a dream.

Later that night in Preet's room...

"So", said Gaytri, "The girl can't walk properly...usko pyar se baat karni nahi aati...gussa uski naak pe rehta hai...thodi si moti hai (she can't speak politely...anger is always on the tip of her nose...she's a little fat)...and what else? Oh yes...she almost killed you with her pakoras".

"Ma!" cried Preet, rolling his eyes. "I only said all that because you were suggesting that Meher and Herman Bhaiya...you know...But the truth is...that I love her Ma. I don't know how or when it happened, but I do. I have this terrifying crushing feeling every time I see her and it becomes hard for me to breathe. I wait desperately for the next time I can just see her or talk to her. I don't even realize it and I'm doing little things just for her. She's constantly in my thoughts...you know like...what is she doing...what is she wearing? When she's around I'm not sure how I should behave, but when she's gone, I feel as if a part of me has been taken away".

"Wow!" said Gaytri. "The Great Preet Juneja...My baby boy...is finally in love". She smiled and ruffled his hair lovingly. "I wish you had told me sooner", she said, thinking about Daljeet's proposal and what her husband's reaction would be to news about Preet and Meher .

"Well. We were planning to tell everyone after Prem Bhaiya's wedding", said Preet. "Is anything wrong Ma?" He asked wondering about the worried expression on his mother's face.

"No", said Gaytri getting up. "Nothing for you to worry yourself about. It's late...get some sleep".

Preet lay in his bed thinking about Meher. His mother knew. What a relief! Things would only get better from here on end, he thought, as peaceful slumber took over him.

Hope you all liked it 😛

Fatima, why I'm having a bad feeling about Ashlesha's shopping trip and Daljeet's bussiness she had to take care of?😲
I'm thinking the haddi could be Ashlesha, Daljeet, Kuljeet, Vishaka or Viren?
Please do update ASAP😳 and thanks for the PM yaar!😳
